00:00the closure of birmingham airport for six hours on wednesday has caused massive problems for many thousands of passengers who were waking up many of them on thursday where they didn't intend to be a light aircraft which was flying to belfast
00:17encountered problems with its under-carriage shortly after take-off it made a wheels up landing basically the under-carriage did not deploy it was an emergency landing fortunately nobody was seriously hurt in that
00:32but the closure of the runway had a massive effect diversions began almost at once and planes ended up as far away as cardiff as liverpool and london gatwick
00:45clearly getting the passengers the pilots and the planes back from there is a logistical nightmare many flights were very simply cancelled when the airlines thought well we simply cannot operate this so we're going to cancel it
00:59now under air passenger rights rules it's absolutely clear what you are entitled to in terms of being flown to your destination as soon as possible on any airline that has seats available
01:12the trouble is at this time of year there are very few spare seats it remains to be seen if airlines will actually try and put on extra flights to clear the backlog
01:25for people arriving home wearily from their holidays well it was a pretty dismal night we saw ryanair flights from malta from dublin arriving in the early hours four hours behind schedule i guess the passengers will at least be glad to be home
01:41and a tui flight from palma was five hours late going outbound on thursday klm's first flight to amsterdam was cancelled because the plane couldn't get in on wednesday
01:54on top of that we have long delays for instance jet two going to zante is currently running three hours late
02:05and spare a thought for the passengers who were heading off for asia for australasia on board emirates
02:12their inbound plane from dubai landed first of all in stansted because the runway was open wasn't open when they were planning to land
02:22it then flew on after a delay and refueling to birmingham but unfortunately the outbound flight was then over two hours late
02:31which inevitably means many missed connections for passengers in dubai the big question lots of people are asking is
02:38looking at the pictures you could have got a tractor and a rope and towed the plane away with 10 minutes or so
02:46but unfortunately things don't work like that first of all the air accident investigators must have a look at what happened
02:54learn some lessons for the future and then there needs to be a full check of the runway to make sure there is no damage and flights can safely resume
