00:00Is there anything that you've stumbled into in your career, Jane, that was totally unexpected
00:18and ended up being the craziest fun time?
00:21I was going through a divorce, realized that I was in terrible financial straits
00:27and the bank had taken my house and I had no money, I had nothing and I called my agent
00:33and said I'll do anything and anything turned up later on that day as a script called Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman
00:39which I was guaranteed would never be a series so I signed for five years immediately.
00:44Started the following morning, I did it thinking that I was just going to do one episode
00:49and it turned into seven years and is still playing in 98 countries.
00:52Yeah, that was unexpected.
00:54People are so adamant that something won't work and those are the things that end up being the greatest success.
00:58Yeah.
00:59You were also one of the early Bond girls.
01:03I was. I was Roger Moore's first Bond girl
01:07and they were looking for someone to play the virgin, psychic, solitaire.
01:12Your acting was incredible.
01:13Thank you. I took the duty very seriously.
01:15I was still playing a virgin when I was 43 on Dr. Quinn.
01:20Oh yeah.
01:21Oh yeah, I have got that part down.
01:23That's hilarious.
01:24I heard a rumor that Jane Seymour was not your birth name.
01:27Definitely not, no.
01:28Joyce Penelope Wilhelmina Frankenberg.
01:31That's a mouthful.
01:32My agent on signing me when I was 17 said,
01:37you have to change your name because it's too long, too difficult to spell and too difficult to remember.
01:42So I opted for the initial J, Jane, that was easy.
01:45And then I think somebody at the agency came up with Seymour,
01:49which was English, easy to spell, easy to remember.
01:51But we didn't realize at first that it was the Queen of England.
01:54You have lived and continue to live the most incredible life.
01:59I feel like it is a movie script.
02:01Well, I'm actually, I just started writing my autobiography.
02:04And the real issue is what do I leave out?
02:06Because there's just, there's a lot.
02:08Yeah.
02:08I really come from a place of gratitude.
02:12And I realized that when you die, you take,
02:16only thing you take with you is the love you've shared in your life
02:18and the difference you've made.
02:20And so it makes life really simple.
02:23And I tell people that, they go, what?
02:24But that is what you take, isn't it, if you think about it?
02:26No, and I mean, that's one reason we're here.
02:29And we love being a part of giving back to Diana
02:31because this is a relationship that means a lot to you, right?
02:34We could not live without Diana.
02:35And she helps, well, not just keeping the house straight,
02:39but she helps with my children.
02:41I mean, she's family.
02:42Her sister before used to help our family as well, Ophelia.
02:45So I think the combination of the two of them is almost 50 years.
02:51Have you been to Diana's house before?
02:53I have been to Diana's house for a gender party.
02:57You know, her daughter was having a gender reveal,
03:00but never really inside.
03:02I've only really known the outside.
03:04And, you know, when she has a party, you know,
03:08or her family comes together, she has a huge family.
03:11She has her daughter and son-in-law
03:12and two children living there as well.
03:14So this is space that is going to be used and used and used.
03:18You know, she gives back to her family, to her community, all the time.
03:23Yeah.
03:23And she uses her space and shares it.
03:26And so I just thought, wow, it would be so fantastic to help her.
03:29Okay, this is it, right?
03:30Yep, this is it.
03:32Diana and her husband, Benjamin, have gone off to see family.
03:36And I'm going to note to them.
03:38Her daughter, Lorena, has been having chats with all of us,
03:41the wonderful things that we could do for her.
03:44And so she's in on it.
03:45And hopefully her daughter is giving us all the right clues.
03:49Are you nervous?
03:49I am nervous.
03:50I'm kind of nervous.
03:51Why am I nervous?
03:52I haven't even met Diana.
03:53You know what you do.
03:53I guess we don't have to get sneaky because she's not even here.
03:57The relationship between Diana and me
04:00and actually everyone in the household
04:02totally transcends the fact that she actually works for us.
04:05It's beyond that.
04:06She's like a second mother.
04:08She's like a younger sister to me.
04:10She is just the most wonderful, nurturing woman with my children
04:14who were teenagers when she first started, you know,
04:17and they needed a little extra care.
04:19And she's incredible with my grandchildren, absolutely incredible.
04:22She's in love with them, actually.
04:24She's nuts about them.
04:25We love spending time with her.
04:27You know, we enjoy her company.
04:28And also, you know, when I've been through really tough times
04:32and I've been really upset by things,
04:33she just knows what to say and what not to say and how to help.
04:38Transitions in my life that she's been there for,
04:40she has handled them really, you know, beautifully.
04:44Oh, wow.
04:44Oh, tons of space.
04:46Okay.
04:46A lot of space.
04:47But it needs to be used, right?
04:51Diane caters for us almost every day.
04:53I work from my home, so she doesn't just cook for me.
04:56She cooks for whoever's working with me.
04:58I want to give her an indoor-outdoor home.
05:00When you live in this part of the world, there's nothing better.
05:03You want to be outside as much as you can.
05:05She has a large family.
05:07I've never seen less than 50 or 60 people here
05:09at the events, the things I've come to.
05:11And it's always spectacular, amazing, lovely people.
05:16They sure as hell know how to have a good time.
05:18This is usually where she'd, you know, she'd cook and do stuff here.
05:22And then when I was here, there'd be, like, plastic tables here
05:25and then some, like, round plastic tables out there.
05:28She will use it for her family, for entertaining outdoor.
05:33I mean, you know, we're in California.
05:35It's beautiful.
05:37You've just got grandkids now.
05:39At the end of a hard day, they all work really, really hard.
05:41They'll probably want to sit out.
05:42It's a good space, but, you know,
05:45everything is just kind of put together somehow.
05:48I mean, the water heater there was an eyesore
05:51next to where you're cooking.
05:52Not a space that was being used to its best advantage.
05:55They have an indoor cooktop just resting on bricks
05:58out here for their cook surface.
06:00I think we could do something a lot more integrated
06:02that feels like a built-in kitchen.
06:04If we did built-in cabinetry...
06:08Actually, you know what would be really nice
06:09is to wrap it around and have, like, bar seating
06:13and stuff like that, too.
06:15Can this go up?
06:15One of the things that I really want
06:17is I want that overhang to be higher
06:19because then it's really going to feel like another room.
06:21It depends on a few things because...
06:24Oh, no, there's tons and tons of room.
06:27There is?
06:27Up above there. Yeah, yeah.
06:28I mean, the main thing I would want to check out
06:30and make sure that we're okay
06:31is to make sure that this is actually permitted
06:33because if it's not permitted,
06:35that's going to be tricky to do in three weeks.
06:38But just raising this up
06:39and having something nicer to look at
06:41than the raw underside of some timber,
06:45it makes a world of difference.
06:46It almost feels like you've done an addition to the home.
06:48So I'm going to climb up and check out the roof,
06:50but let's make sure we're on the same page
06:52about the rest of the yard.
06:53Is it possible to give them a bit more privacy around here?
06:56That's what I was just thinking.
06:57I think that would be huge.
06:58The CMU wall is pretty low.
07:00And you also have, on that side over there,
07:02it's a busy street.
07:03So to have just a little bit more sound break would be nice.
07:06There's likely an actual restriction in this area
07:08that won't allow you to take that any higher.
07:10However, we could do hedges
07:12and have furniture that's appropriate for outside.
07:14Yes, this is not one of yours?
07:16This is not one of mine, either.
07:18I can tell a lot of the concrete is new,
07:20so they clearly know that they needed
07:22to get more out of the yard.
07:24But then they have some fun things, too, like,
07:26well, yeah, it just puts you right in here.
07:28Oh, thank you.
07:29Yes, I'm sure that'll hold me.
07:31This is Jane Seaton.
07:32When we look out here, they've got the room for it.
07:35Architecture will change this awning.
07:37But what's also great is,
07:39I was worried if they're going to have the space
07:41to move certain things like mechanical or whatever.
07:43They have a shed in a whole area over here.
07:45There's also a whole lane on the side of the house.
07:47So we could make this perfect for the living space,
07:50and anything else they have
07:51can tuck into these other areas.
07:53How many kids are there?
07:54Two.
07:54These are the grandkids?
07:55Yes.
07:56So do they still need room for lots of parking?
07:59This is not quite my size.
08:00This is an electric.
08:02I might be stuck.
08:04You might be stuck.
08:04Can you give me a little pull-up?
08:06We've got room.
08:07This parking pad is good for all of us.
08:10I'm not even sure if I can fit in this one.
08:12I wonder if we're going to raise this structure here
08:15to improve this outdoor area.
08:17I wonder if we could add another structure over here,
08:19maybe, for a bit more shade.
08:21What would you think?
08:21Like, by the fire pit,
08:22or even just out here for a lounging area?
08:24That'll be the other thing.
08:25I have to check with the city
08:26and see if we have a setback requirement.
08:28I'd love to have a pergola.
08:30If we could do a pergola,
08:31how great would that be?
08:32That would be amazing.
08:32She wanted to be able to cook out there.
08:35She wanted it to be a garden
08:37where you could sit around a fire pit.
08:39And now she can have a lot of shade if she wants it.
08:42I mean, I'm small,
08:43but there's not a lot to sit on here.
08:45The back half of my butt fits on this.
08:47Yes.
08:47It's just really, really shallow.
08:48And my butt is a lot bigger than your butt.
08:49I noticed the concrete under the patio there,
08:52it's a little bit older,
08:53and there's some cracks,
08:54so let's clean it up.
08:55And if we are putting in some privacy here,
08:58you can see there's a couple of feet at the end here.
09:01We could probably hammer that out
09:03and actually just...
09:04The two options would be
09:05either create a similar planter along this wall
09:08so we have some height on it
09:09or just cut into the slab here
09:11and put a planter in the ground.
09:14I do like that they have gas run underground
09:16already to the fire pit here,
09:18so maybe we can do something a little bit nicer.
09:20You're going to do a different kind of shape,
09:21do you think?
09:21Yeah, I think so.
09:22Maybe we can have something round.
09:24I feel we should get on the roof.
09:27She's hardcore.
09:28She wants to get up there and be a part of it.
09:29Here, take my hand.
09:30I'm much more hardcore than you'd ever imagine.
09:34There you go.
09:35The delicate ballet.
09:36Now I'll take that.
09:36Very, very elegant.
09:39Wow.
09:39All right.
09:40This is actually kind of nice up here.
09:41It does feel a little bouncy,
09:43but again, it's not meant to be a deck.
09:44There was something here before.
09:46Do you think it was an old roof structure
09:47that they replaced
09:48or do you think it was a flashing?
09:50I can't tell if they chiseled it back
09:51just to get this flashing up underneath,
09:53but if this is permitted,
09:55I can guarantee you we can finish everything in three weeks.
09:58If this is not permitted,
09:59it's not going to happen.
10:02All right, let's do this.
10:03We'll start planning for tomorrow.
10:05We'll strip everything out.
10:06I'm going to run to the permit office today.
10:08Hopefully, when I see you next, we have good news.
10:10Yes.
10:11Okay.
10:11It's not just something for her.
10:13It's something that will be shared by a lot of people
10:15for whom this will be a really wonderful oasis.
10:18I have one idea.
10:19Seeing as we're Scottish, you're English,
10:22and we all could use a little sun.
10:24How about we lay up here and get a little sun?
10:25A little sunning?
10:2620 minutes.
10:26A little sun?
10:27Oh, yeah.
10:28Is that what we're doing?
10:29Okay.
10:30Actually, it does feel kind of nice.
10:33Come on in.
10:34Hey.
10:35This is the studio.
10:36This is the studio.
10:37Wait.
10:38Hold on.
10:38Hold on.
10:39Hold on.
10:39You have such a gorgeous property
10:41as I'm walking up here.
10:42Well, thank you.
10:43You've played a Bond girl.
10:45Now you're a John girl.
10:46Oh, there you go.
10:49Whoa!
10:50Woo!
10:51We're just getting started.
10:55Getting started.
10:57We're just getting started.
10:59All right.
10:59As you're the expert,
11:00do you want to give it a sample
11:01to see if you can guess what it is?
11:04Well, it's not Earl Grey.
11:05It must be English.
11:07It is English.
11:07It's English.
11:08It's called English Tea Time.
11:09Ooh.
11:10Mm-hmm.
11:10Cheers.
11:11Very generic.
11:11Yeah, no, this feels like
11:12the American version of, like,
11:14yeah, yeah, it's English Tea.
11:16English Tea Time.
11:17We have a couple decisions to make,
11:19and I have a couple of answers
11:19to give you because I met with the city.
11:21Okay, and?
11:23I have good news and I have bad news.
11:25Oh, I hate bad news.
11:26Why don't I start with the good news?
11:27Oh, start with the good news.
11:28This is the most important thing.
11:29I want to make you happy.
11:30It turns out that this is a permitted structure,
11:32so the city is already good
11:33with everything there.
11:34In fact, they're already good
11:35with the slight adjustments
11:36we would want to make to it,
11:37so we can raise it up.
11:38Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
11:40Not going to delay at all.
11:40Oh, my God.
11:41That's great.
11:41Amazing, amazing.
11:42The bad news.
11:43Yeah, what's the bad news?
11:44We talked about how we wanted to do
11:47a seated area over here
11:49with maybe, like, a pergola,
11:50kind of like this.
11:51Oh, right, yeah.
11:52Turns out the city requires
11:53a 25-foot setback
11:56from the edge of the property right here,
11:58which means we can't build any structure,
12:01a pergola or anything,
12:01until about here.
12:03Best case scenario,
12:04I'll talk with the team
12:05and see if we can get
12:06a couple of posts over here
12:07and run cables across the yard
12:09and then attach a retractable canvas cover
12:11that'll go right across.
12:12That would be so fantastic,
12:13wouldn't it?
12:13Yeah.
12:14Because when it's super hot here,
12:15you won't shade anyway,
12:16don't you?
12:16And if they're getting 50 friends
12:18and family in that backyard,
12:20they would shade the whole yard.
12:21I think that might be really cool.
12:22So I'll look into that.
12:24We're using existing concrete here, right?
12:26Yeah, we're actually going to pull up
12:27the old concrete in the middle
12:28because I'm going to have to run...
12:29Yeah, exactly.
12:30So it'll all look new
12:31because this stuff out here
12:32is in great shape.
12:32Yeah.
12:33The middle area doesn't match
12:34and we have to break it anyway
12:35to put our new supports.
12:37We're doing steel posts.
12:38They cook from this side,
12:39but they can serve straight out to here
12:41and they'll be seating here.
12:42Exactly.
12:42It'll literally look as beautiful
12:44as an indoor kitchen
12:45in their outdoor space.
12:46Fantastic.
12:47This is cabinetry.
12:48Yep.
12:48We have a company
12:49that does this incredible composite kitchen.
12:51So it's marine grade.
12:53You can basically take it outside
12:54and it comes in a million different colors
12:58and finishes.
12:59What do you think would speak to Diana?
13:03I love white oak.
13:05I have that in my house
13:06and she knows it well and loves it
13:08and she sometimes salivates
13:10when she looks at it
13:10and goes,
13:11I do like that.
13:13Well, I just did this.
13:14You did?
13:14Yeah, and it looks beautiful.
13:16Well, I think it's also great
13:18because it looks so like real wood.
13:20Yeah.
13:20So if we did the white oak then
13:21and you're thinking of
13:23what the hardware would be
13:24for the kitchen
13:24in reality
13:26a little darker contrast
13:28looks great.
13:28That's the obvious one, isn't it?
13:30Yeah, otherwise...
13:30Plus I love this.
13:32Again, I have this in my kitchen.
13:33The kitchen she works in every day
13:35is what we have.
13:36When I'm choosing
13:37in my house
13:38and when I remodeled it
13:39I would ask Diana
13:40her opinion
13:41because I said
13:41you work in this kitchen
13:42what do you like?
13:43So I know
13:45what she already likes.
13:46So what would you want to see
13:47for the stone
13:48because the stone
13:49is really the surface
13:49you see the most
13:50from up top
13:51and so we can go
13:52in any direction.
13:53I do think something
13:54that looks like marble
13:55we can do all this
13:57in porcelain.
13:57I like the stone look here.
14:00Yeah?
14:00Because this looks
14:01like it's real.
14:02Yeah.
14:02And I love that too.
14:04I have something
14:05similar, a bit different
14:06to that in my place too.
14:07So I love this.
14:08This would be
14:08what I would choose.
14:09Yeah.
14:10Excellent.
14:10Voila!
14:11That's it.
14:12I think she's gonna go nuts
14:13when she sees this.
14:14We'll start with the obvious
14:15ripping down
14:16that dilapidated
14:17wooden overhang.
14:18This backyard oasis
14:19will start with
14:20a solid modern structure
14:21that will look as chic
14:22as it is functional.
14:24And while providing shade
14:24is one job in the yard,
14:26we'll also raise it higher
14:27to create a larger open space.
14:29We'll dig up that damaged
14:30concrete in the middle
14:31of the yard
14:31and match it
14:32to the newer concrete
14:33that Diane and her husband
14:34previously installed.
14:35We'll move that bulky
14:36water heater to the garage
14:37and swap that old
14:38grill and cooktop
14:39with a new sink
14:40and cabinets
14:40along the same wall
14:42so Diana will have
14:42plenty of outdoor storage.
14:44We'll install even more
14:45cabinetry along the side
14:46as well as a fridge
14:47and a sleek 46-inch grill
14:49so she'll have no problem
14:50feeding her large family
14:51or hosting dinner parties
14:53with friends.
14:53In the back corner
14:54of the yard,
14:55we'll cover that
14:55old concrete wall
14:56with a fashionable
14:57slatted stained wood
14:58and we'll furnish the space
15:00with a new fire pit
15:00for guests to retire
15:02after dinner.
15:02To green up the space
15:03and offer additional privacy,
15:05we'll add flower beds
15:06and hedges
15:06along the wall perimeter
15:08and boast a retractable
15:09canvas awning
15:10that can extend
15:11from the roof structure
15:11to provide shade
15:12and a posh lounge space
15:14for pre- and post-dinner cocktails.
15:16Cheers.
15:17I think it's going to be splendid.
15:19I suppose to hold it
15:19like this, you know,
15:20that's the English way.
15:21Right out.
15:35There we go.
15:38Oh, look at that!
15:43Okay, my turn.
15:44When all the dust
15:47was coming out
15:48of the gutters
15:49and flying in our faces
15:50and, yeah,
15:51it was really cool.
15:52I love it
15:53because I now know
15:53that if I was to do it
15:55at home,
15:55I could probably
15:56do it at home.
15:57When you were a Bond girl,
15:59did you have a Bond walk?
16:00A Bond girl walk?
16:01Did you have to...
16:01Well, I was running
16:02three paces behind
16:03a man with a gun
16:04in high heels
16:05and scantily clad.
16:07That's good exercise.
16:08That is cool.
16:08And this is...
16:09Actually, this is a secret
16:10you don't know.
16:10So, people like you
16:12are too tall to kiss, right?
16:14Mm-hmm.
16:15But then you have to come...
16:16You have to run along.
16:17Sorry, I'll come along.
16:18And then you have to...
16:18On your high heels,
16:19you have to get on the box
16:20without anyone noticing
16:21and be there
16:22for that moment
16:23and then somehow
16:24get off the box
16:24without anyone knowing
16:25that you climbed a box
16:26in high heels.
16:27Roger is very tall.
16:29Kristen Reeve is very tall.
16:31Tom Selleck's very tall.
16:32Why would they pick
16:33someone that's a foot
16:34shorter than them?
16:36Because good things
16:37come in small packages.
16:38That's a good point.
16:38Fortunately, I've never
16:39had to kiss my co-star.
16:43All right.
16:43Wait, hold on.
16:44I'm having a hard time.
16:45I'm having a hard time
16:46understanding anything
16:46in Jane's saying.
16:47What's that?
16:47Just, uh...
16:48Oh, you want me to do this?
16:49Okay, here we go.
16:50Come on up.
16:50Okay.
16:51Well, I'm not looking.
16:55Well, this is just going
16:56to be the most amazing space.
16:58I'm very excited,
16:59but, you know,
16:59I'm very concerned
17:00about this, uh,
17:02this wall.
17:03I mean, what are we
17:03going to do?
17:04I mean, we can't do
17:05all this amazing stuff
17:06and just have this
17:07finish all over the house.
17:08What are you suggesting
17:09we do?
17:10Are you pleased?
17:11Are you pleased?
17:11Wait, wait, hold on.
17:12Hold on.
17:13Wait, wait.
17:14Oh, okay.
17:15Okay.
17:16Now bang.
17:17Okay.
17:17Can we just, you know,
17:19paint the whole house?
17:20I mean, redo the outside.
17:20Paint the house?
17:21Yeah.
17:23The whole outside, anyway,
17:24so it all kind of matches
17:26and looks wonderful,
17:26when you're this close.
17:27I can't say no.
17:28Oh, my gosh.
17:29This thing's going
17:30to be unbelievable.
17:30She's going to feel
17:31like she has
17:31a whole new house.
17:33Are you ready?
17:35Okay.
17:36Take your time
17:37and then just step around.
17:39Step around.
17:40One, two, three.
17:41I'll take a hand.
17:41Thanks.
17:42I know they didn't expect
17:43me to get up on the roof.
17:44I was hoping
17:45that I would be doing
17:46all of that stuff.
17:47I didn't want to just
17:48chat and have someone
17:49else go and do the work.
17:50The more in line
17:50your body is with it,
17:52the easier it'll be.
17:52It was fun.
18:02You know,
18:02I always wanted to do
18:02something that I haven't
18:03done before.
18:05The last support.
18:07You can do it.
18:09You want me to do it?
18:10You played a Bond girl.
18:11I did.
18:11Now you're a John girl.
18:13Oh, there you go.
18:13Oh, there you go.
18:23Woo!
18:24They said we weren't
18:24standing on that.
18:26Yeah, you don't want me
18:27standing on that.
18:27They've got me climbing
18:28on the roofs,
18:29knocking things down,
18:30sawing things.
18:31I mean, I am using
18:32all this equipment
18:33that nobody my size
18:34and shape
18:35and balletic skills
18:38would normally be
18:38dealing with.
18:40We're basically
18:40going to cut our line
18:41for the new planter
18:42along the wall.
18:43We're putting in
18:44six-foot-tall hedges
18:45which will grow
18:46to be eight feet tall.
18:48So our only thing
18:49that we have to do
18:50because this is
18:51the edge of our planter
18:52is we just want
18:53to make sure
18:54it's nice and straight.
18:55A straight line.
18:56Follow that guide
18:57and we'll be good.
18:58Okay?
18:58If you know what you're
19:13doing with the machine
19:14it does the work for you
19:15and really what it requires
19:17is having a steady hand.
19:18Well, I'm used to
19:19painting and sculpting
19:20so to actually have
19:22a steady hand
19:22follow a blue line
19:23or, you know,
19:24do whatever
19:25that's in my wheelhouse.
19:30This has been
19:31one of my favorite
19:32days in my life.
19:33I absolutely loved it.
19:35Oh!
19:35You did it!
19:36Yes!
19:37There you go.
19:55Run that through.
19:56I have this.
19:57I think one of the
19:59most important things
20:00we've done here
20:00is we've done
20:01some really major
20:02structural things.
20:03We've raised the ceiling
20:05of that overhang.
20:06We've made it
20:06much, much more secure.
20:08I mean, it's
20:09completely been rebuilt
20:10and I think it'll
20:12last even longer
20:13than the house.
20:13I mean, it's that secure.
20:14It's fantastic.
20:15You know what I think
20:16is great here is
20:17we're basically told
20:18with setbacks
20:19we weren't allowed
20:20to have an awning
20:22over here.
20:22This is our solution
20:23to still give them shade
20:24for an outdoor space.
20:25Once we get the fabric
20:26we'll be able to run
20:27that all the way up
20:27and it'll just slide.
20:28You know what I love
20:29about this?
20:30This is how I live.
20:31Happy accidents.
20:32Yeah.
20:33When people say,
20:33oh, bummer,
20:34we can't do this
20:35and then you end up
20:36with something
20:3610,000 times better.
20:38Exactly.
20:38I know.
20:39Speaking of happy accidents,
20:41my parents didn't even know
20:42that Drew was there
20:42when we were born.
20:43They thought it was
20:44one kid and then
20:45all of a sudden
20:45the doctor's like,
20:47ah, there's another one.
20:48You know I had twins, right?
20:49Yes.
20:50Mine were four and a half
20:51and five pounds.
20:52You know what's really
20:52great about twins?
20:53They have a natural harmony
20:55when they sing
20:56or they play.
20:56We have that.
20:57That nobody has.
20:58You want to hear
20:58a little sample?
20:59I do.
21:00Hold on, hold on.
21:06I'm coming home.
21:08I'm coming home.
21:10You know people said
21:10to me when I had twins
21:11they said, oh, you know,
21:12they have a secret language
21:13and they kind of do
21:15whether it's words
21:16or it's music.
21:17My boyfriend's a musician
21:18and he just says
21:19you can't train that,
21:21you can't find it,
21:22you just have it in twins.
21:24It's just a twin harmony.
21:25I love that this is going
21:26to be so much coverage
21:28out here for them.
21:29Extraordinary.
21:29So how easy is it
21:31to, you know,
21:32pull it on and off?
21:33As easy as me
21:34walking like this?
21:36Really?
21:36That's as easy.
21:37Yeah, you literally
21:37can just drag it.
21:38You drag it.
21:39Yeah.
21:39And this is a lot of coverage.
21:40If you look at this,
21:41this is almost 10 feet
21:42wide of coverage
21:43the entire length
21:44of her yard.
21:45Is there anything else
21:46that comes to mind
21:47that Diana would love?
21:48Uh, I think we need
21:49to figure out the landscaping
21:51because I know she really
21:52loves the plants at my house
21:53and, you know,
21:54we grow all our own
21:55fruits and vegetables
21:56and she cooks
21:57from that every day
21:57but I know she just,
21:59you know,
22:00there's a lot of concrete here
22:01which is practical
22:02and great
22:03but I know that she would
22:04love some nature here.
22:06You live in Malibu, right?
22:07I live in Malibu.
22:08Maybe it would be good.
22:09I'll hop over to her house
22:10just to get an idea
22:11of a few of the things
22:11from your yard
22:12that we could use
22:13as inspiration for this space.
22:14Well, if you guys
22:14figure out the time
22:15to do that in the meantime,
22:17let's keep going.
22:17Let's take this out.
22:18You have a lot of work to do.
22:19Can you feel it?
22:41Hey.
22:41Hey.
22:42Come on in.
22:43Hey.
22:44This is the studio.
22:45This is the studio.
22:47Wait.
22:47Hold on.
22:47Hold on.
22:48Hold on.
22:48There's no way you painted these
22:49because that's you in it.
22:50Yeah.
22:51That's me in it.
22:52Well, if you think about it,
22:53I spend my entire life
22:55looking at myself in the mirror
22:56trying to look like
22:57whatever character
22:57I'm going to play.
22:58I'm feeling very much
23:00an underachiever right now
23:01with all the things
23:02you're so talented at
23:03from sculptures
23:04to painting
23:05to design as well
23:06because you have
23:07such a gorgeous property
23:09as I'm walking up here.
23:10Well, thank you.
23:11I would love
23:11to walk through the garden
23:12and maybe get an idea
23:13of what you see for Diana.
23:15First off,
23:16I know we want to go
23:17pick some colors
23:17for the house.
23:18Are you working on something
23:19or were you actually
23:20going through color options?
23:20Well, I was actually
23:21looking at color options
23:23and I was just
23:23trying to see
23:25whether I could come up
23:25with some concepts.
23:27You mentioned she's inspired
23:29by your home
23:29and she likes your aesthetic.
23:31What do you want
23:32for your color tones?
23:33Do you like something
23:34that's going to be
23:35more contemporary,
23:36whites, blacks
23:38with some contrast
23:38or do you want something
23:39with a warmer tone?
23:41I think the, you know,
23:43the overhang
23:44and the posts
23:44should not be the same color
23:46as the house.
23:47Yeah.
23:47I think tonally,
23:48I think a little bit warmer.
23:50Yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:50I think just something
23:51so it's not matchy-matchy.
23:52I see you're playing over here.
23:54This is kind of nice.
23:54It's a really nice color.
23:56I like that color.
23:56I think that's great
23:57for the house
23:57because you see there
23:58like the reddish tones
24:00or orange tones,
24:00it's a bit too much.
24:01Too much, yeah.
24:02Yeah, I would say
24:03let's do this for the house.
24:04This for the house
24:05and then the overhang
24:07would be a little bit darker.
24:08I'm trying to see.
24:09It's way too dark.
24:10It's almost like this.
24:11I would say,
24:11see how this,
24:13the lighter part of this?
24:13Well, I love,
24:14oh, that lighter part of that.
24:16Okay.
24:17So we could do
24:17the fascia
24:18for the house
24:19and that flat wall
24:21could be darker
24:22because if the cinderblock wall
24:23is light,
24:24it'd be nice
24:24to have a darker tone.
24:25Oh, that's really nice.
24:26Well, it's kind of brownish.
24:28I don't know how much brown
24:29we want in there,
24:29but...
24:30You know what?
24:30A little brown
24:31actually isn't bad, though.
24:32No, it's not bad at all.
24:33I mean, we could pull
24:33a bit more of the black
24:35into that.
24:36Yep.
24:36I think this is so much better
24:37than me just having
24:38a sample book.
24:39I love the fact
24:40that you're creating
24:40the color for her house.
24:42I think we have a solid idea
24:43of the colors
24:44we want to go for,
24:45which I'll come
24:46and take this with me,
24:47but can we walk outside?
24:49Can you show me
24:49some of the areas
24:50that you know Diana loves?
24:53Look at this view.
24:55Beautiful, isn't it?
24:56It's like a dream.
24:57Like, back here,
24:58if you want to paint
24:59the picture
24:59for what Diana would love,
25:01you're already doing it.
25:02This is gorgeous.
25:04I'm a great believer
25:05in having things
25:06that are living
25:07as part of your environment.
25:09That's very important to me.
25:10But at the same time,
25:11you know,
25:12it can get very hot here
25:13and sometimes
25:14there are water issues.
25:15So I want there
25:16to be greenery,
25:16but I want it to be easy
25:17for her to be able
25:19to keep it alive
25:20without constantly
25:20having to water it.
25:21She loves it out here
25:22and these succulents here,
25:25these are all little
25:25tiny cuttings
25:27that I had from the back.
25:29I just thought,
25:29let's just put succulents here.
25:31I didn't go and buy them.
25:32I just stuck them
25:32in the ground
25:33and they've gone crazy.
25:34I have a crazy idea.
25:36I think instead of just
25:37going and buying succulents
25:39at the store
25:39or at some nursery,
25:41it would mean more to Diana
25:42if we actually,
25:43I just broke some off
25:44from your garden
25:44and put them in hers.
25:45Are you okay with that?
25:46I am very okay with that.
25:47I love that idea.
25:48So if I just...
25:49Which one?
25:49What do you want to take?
25:50I mean,
25:51depends on how many
25:52you'll allow me to.
25:53If I just kind of
25:53wander over here
25:54and, you know,
25:56just take this with me.
25:58And I think we can
25:59collect a few more of those.
26:00Let's keep going.
26:02We'll go around the back.
26:03You got another area?
26:04There's plenty more.
26:04Okay.
26:04I have so many.
26:05By the time I leave here,
26:06I'm going to have
26:07an entire garden
26:07in the trunk of my car.
26:09This is amazing.
26:20There you go.
26:22Oh, that's fun.
26:23That's very satisfying.
26:24Yes.
26:25Okay.
26:25All right.
26:26Let me get one over here.
26:27All right.
26:28Six foot, right?
26:30Yes.
26:30We're allowed to go up to six foot
26:31and then we can go
26:31a little higher here
26:32with the...
26:33How tall are you?
26:34Five foot four,
26:35but that was before
26:36I got the boots on.
26:37I think this is about
26:38six foot right here, right?
26:39So we can go to my nose.
26:40Your nose?
26:40Yeah.
26:41It's really nice to have
26:42something like that
26:43you can measure from.
26:44And what are we going to do?
26:45Because we took out
26:46the fire pit,
26:48so we're going to move
26:48the fire pit forward.
26:49Now a new one?
26:50Yeah.
26:50So we're going to put
26:51in our new seating
26:52here in an L shape.
26:53Right.
26:53And then we'll have
26:53our new fire pit
26:55just shifted forward
26:55just a hair.
26:56It's like a bowl.
26:57The new one,
26:57it's more stylish looking as well.
27:01You can see where the gas
27:02is right there.
27:03Okay.
27:03It's going to be great.
27:04I mean, it's going to be
27:05a whole new look
27:06on top of everything
27:07we do over here,
27:07on top of everything
27:08we do over there.
27:09It's going to be
27:09a new backyard.
27:10But how does it feel
27:10to get out here
27:11and actually physically
27:12do this instead of
27:13just hiring somebody
27:14to come and do it?
27:14This is really exciting.
27:15Plus, I love the idea
27:16that I'm going to learn
27:17a new skill set
27:19that I can maybe
27:19take home and do
27:20for myself.
27:21First of all,
27:21I think it's an amazing
27:22addition to the garden.
27:24It's just so chic.
27:26But the thing that's
27:26exciting for me
27:27is I have never used
27:28one of those guns before.
27:30And I have a little
27:31repair work that needs
27:32doing in my house.
27:33I'm beginning to think
27:34that I might be able
27:35to do it, you know,
27:37and repair this little
27:38bridge that I have.
27:39I now get it why people
27:40want to have tools.
27:41You got it.
27:42I love this.
27:43This reminds me
27:44of the Wild West.
27:46Yeah, exactly.
27:47With a gun.
27:47You could be like...
27:48Let it out!
27:50The biggest problem
27:59with after cabinetry
28:00is usually they'll do
28:01like stucco
28:02and then just have
28:02a couple of stainless
28:03steel drawers,
28:04but it's not very
28:05functional.
28:05If you do cabinets,
28:06they're going to warp
28:07or they're going to fade.
28:08This stands up to heat,
28:10to sunshine.
28:11It's going to stay
28:11looking like this.
28:12Actually, when it's all
28:13said and done,
28:13it's going to look
28:14like white oak.
28:14Easy to clean,
28:15you just wipe it off.
28:15It's fantastic.
28:16She's going to love that.
28:17What they had already done
28:18was what they were
28:19dreaming of having
28:20and it was functional
28:21but it was messy
28:22and there were bits
28:23that didn't need
28:24to be there
28:24and it looked temporary.
28:27It looked like it was
28:28held together a little bit.
28:30Now this thing is solid.
28:32This thing is there forever.
28:34This is a great kitchen.
28:35I know how much Diana
28:37loves to keep things
28:38absolutely perfect
28:39and clean and tidy.
28:41She's going to love this.
28:42This is the whole
28:43cooked area.
28:44So this is your
28:45kitchen perimeter.
28:46Stone will be
28:47continuous so waterfall,
28:49counters, counters,
28:50waterfall.
28:51It'll extend another
28:52foot past here,
28:53a little over a foot
28:54and then you'll have
28:54breakfast bar seating
28:55on this side.
28:56We've got our hood
28:57going in so that the grill
28:59will be vented properly.
29:00It's going to be great.
29:01When she has her friends
29:03and her family,
29:03she has a large family,
29:04when they all come,
29:05she'll be able to cook there.
29:07She'll be able to serve
29:08on that banquette.
29:09She'll have, you know,
29:10the counter where they can sit.
29:12They can even put the kids
29:13up in their high chairs.
29:15I cannot wait to see
29:16how she uses it.
29:18Oh, my God.
29:20This is my house.
29:21Hello.
29:22Wow, this is Jane.
29:24You have such a beautiful home,
29:25but we figured there was
29:26something that Jane said
29:28could make it a little bit
29:29more fun for entertaining.
29:31Yes.
29:31Oh, my God.
29:34This is beautiful.
29:35We have some decisions to make.
29:48We have some painting to do.
29:49It is so strong,
29:52this structure.
29:53Everything here is built
29:54like a rock.
29:56Good.
29:57The downside,
29:58when you build something this strong,
29:59and we were required to,
30:00is you can see all the chunky
30:02angle brackets over here,
30:04the hangers up here.
30:06You can see all the metal,
30:07the ones that are tied into ledgers,
30:08even the legs
30:09that are all bolted into the house.
30:11Right.
30:11You tell me,
30:12would you be comfortable
30:14still seeing some of the metal
30:16if it was sprayed out
30:18the same color,
30:18or are you wanting us
30:19to actually take it
30:21a step further?
30:22Well, I like the big ones
30:23because you can actually
30:24see what they are,
30:25but these little ones
30:26look a little messy.
30:27I mean,
30:27it would be great
30:28if we could just put
30:29some kind of molding
30:30across it
30:31just so that we don't
30:32have to look at that.
30:33These guys?
30:33That stuff, yeah.
30:34The bottom?
30:34I think it would look
30:35much nicer.
30:36Should we spray
30:37a little sample
30:38just to see what it looks like?
30:39Yeah.
30:39You're going to step
30:40into it this way.
30:40This is going to be
30:41an interesting part of it
30:42because it requires balance.
30:44All right,
30:44let me see if I can get in.
30:45This is a little bit
30:46like Cinderella,
30:48except you're not the prince
30:49trying the shoe on.
30:50You're trying to get
30:51the big work boot
30:52in to the painting suit.
30:55Is this a good look?
30:56You look like
30:57an elegant marshmallow.
30:58Why do I feel like
30:59I'm in a
31:00I Love Lucy here?
31:01Yeah.
31:09When we step back
31:10and we look,
31:11you're definitely right.
31:13Along the bottom,
31:14I think it would be good
31:15to have a wood trim
31:17all the way across.
31:18Yeah.
31:18And that'll cover that,
31:19but I'm not offended
31:20by the actual hangers.
31:23I wouldn't worry too much
31:24about the rest of it
31:26because even if I took
31:27the wood filler
31:28that we do across
31:29and if I did it going up
31:30as well,
31:31I mean,
31:31it would be nice,
31:32but you're still going
31:32to see the hangers
31:33stick out from it.
31:34So I don't know
31:35if it's worth
31:36all the extra effort.
31:38Okay, well,
31:38I trust you.
31:39Okay, all right.
31:40Back to work.
31:40I've seen you on TV.
31:42Excellent.
31:43Nothing on TV
31:44could ever go wrong.
31:45Exactly.
31:47All right.
31:48Oh, I'm so sorry.
31:50You said you trusted me?
31:51Oh, you just sprayed me.
31:52Oh, my goodness.
31:53I'm so sorry.
31:54Did I do it again?
31:55All right, I'll let it go.
32:00Here we go.
32:01When you have to finish
32:16something by a certain time,
32:17that kind of puts
32:18the back burner's on.
32:20Everyone's on,
32:21okay, we can do this.
32:22We can do this.
32:22And that's what I feel.
32:23I feel like everyone involved
32:25here is going to make this happen.
32:26Wow, wow, wow.
32:27I can't believe it.
32:28It's extraordinary.
32:29This is built to last.
32:31This will outlive
32:31the house now.
32:32Oh, your idea, by the way.
32:33Did you even notice?
32:34Oh.
32:34Filled in all the...
32:35You did.
32:36Just to hide as much
32:37of the hardware as possible.
32:38I really appreciate that.
32:39And I do love that color gray.
32:41I got the note as well.
32:42You said that you wanted
32:44to make sure she had a griddle.
32:45Yes.
32:46So this plate inside here,
32:48she can griddle on this side.
32:49Excellent.
32:50If they ever need it removed.
32:52Oh, so she can do both.
32:53It's a full grill.
32:55Meant to last.
32:56I'm in love with this.
32:57This is refrigeration, right?
33:00Exactly.
33:00Put your...
33:01This is incredible.
33:01Whatever you're grilling,
33:02your meats, your fruits,
33:03your drinks.
33:04Fantastic.
33:05Should we check in?
33:06We're going to see where she's at.
33:08Lorena.
33:09Hey.
33:10Hi.
33:11Hi.
33:11I am...
33:12I'm just...
33:12I'm nervous.
33:13I'm excited.
33:14Where's...
33:15Where are mom and dad?
33:15They just texted me.
33:16They landed.
33:17Okay.
33:18Oh, good.
33:18So the parents aren't there yet.
33:19See?
33:19Ah!
33:20You see who's here.
33:21Oh, my God.
33:23We're her muscle.
33:25Thank you so much for everything.
33:27Did they have any idea?
33:29They do not have any idea.
33:30They're going to be so excited and surprised.
33:33Ah, well, we can't wait to see you.
33:35Bring them here safely.
33:36It looks amazing.
33:37It looks amazing.
33:39All right.
33:40I'm sure it does.
33:41We'll be there in 30 minutes.
33:42Okay.
33:43Oh, gosh.
33:43Yeah, let's finish this up.
33:46We've got a lot to do.
33:46We'll be in a rush.
33:48Are you ready for everything that we dream?
33:51Coming true right before our eyes.
33:57This is stressing me out.
33:59I'm very nervous.
34:00I just don't want to spill the beans before she sees Jane.
34:03I don't want to tell her that there's something going on at the house before she gets the surprise
34:07of her life.
34:08Good things are coming.
34:10Good things are coming.
34:12Oh, my God.
34:17Hello.
34:18Wow, Mrs. Jane.
34:21Oh, my God.
34:23Look what we did to your house.
34:25Look.
34:25Wow, this is beautiful.
34:27Did you see?
34:28Oh, my God, Mrs. Jane.
34:30Well, we thought it needed a little fresh coat of paint.
34:33Do you like it?
34:34Yes, it's beautiful.
34:35Really?
34:35This is my house.
34:36This is your home.
34:38Wow.
34:38We just tinkered with it a little bit.
34:40I'm surprised.
34:41I see my house white.
34:44Who changed the color?
34:46This is beautiful.
34:47It's beautiful.
34:50How do you like it?
34:51I love the color.
34:52We love you so much.
34:55I know.
34:55You are our family.
34:56And I wanted, I had an opportunity to do something special for you.
35:00And I hope you like it.
35:02Wow.
35:03Uh, it's a secret.
35:04It's a surprise.
35:05She always work with cameras because I think she's working at my house.
35:10Why she's here on Saturday?
35:13We love you so much.
35:14And you spend so much time at my house.
35:16And there are so many things you see in my house.
35:17You go, oh, I love that.
35:19I love that.
35:19So I thought, I wonder what would happen if I had a couple of friends help me and put elements
35:25to that.
35:25Hello.
35:26How are you?
35:27Hey, that's an issue.
35:28Why are you not telling me nothing?
35:31It's supposed to be a surprise.
35:33We're going to take you first and just show you a little surprise.
35:36Okay.
35:37Yes, thank you.
35:38Okay.
35:39She is very compassionate.
35:40You know, when a family member is ill, she really cares.
35:45You know, if I'm unhappy, she's there to be of comfort.
35:49She is family.
35:51No peeking.
35:51We're going to bring you around.
35:53I'm going to turn this way.
35:54Okay.
35:55All right.
35:56Breathe in deep.
35:57Open your eyes.
35:59Open your eyes.
36:01Oh, my God.
36:02Mrs. Jane.
36:04This is my home.
36:10Keep your eyes closed.
36:12No peeking.
36:14Go this way.
36:14Okay.
36:16All right.
36:16Breathe in deep.
36:18Open your eyes.
36:18Open your eyes.
36:21Oh, my God.
36:22Mrs. Jane.
36:24This is beautiful.
36:25This is your new kitchen.
36:44Oh, my God.
36:46This is beautiful.
36:48Your living room, you have like a whole new house.
36:50She has changed my life.
36:55She is very generous.
36:57Not only with me, but with my family.
37:00She is generous with everyone.
37:01Not often do we work with someone who has such incredible design tastes as Jane.
37:07She knows what's going to make for a great space.
37:10She knows what looks good.
37:11She picked all the materials.
37:13And also thought, so that you didn't have the worry of, you know, maintenance and things,
37:16this is all porcelain, so it will not stain.
37:19Put anything on this.
37:20This is...
37:20Nothing can go wrong here.
37:21Wow, Missy, Jane.
37:23Come in here and check out.
37:25You have a real kitchen outside.
37:26Okay, are you ready?
37:28Open it up.
37:30Wow, this is beautiful.
37:33And here you can make eggs or whatever or tortillas.
37:36If you need to make more burgers, more burgers.
37:40Wow, this is beautiful.
37:42The kitchen is my favorite because I like to cook.
37:46We can't go to a restaurant that the food is anywhere close to Diana's food.
37:50People actually come from all over the world for her guacamole.
37:53It's famous.
37:54All of this, everything here is created for outdoor living.
37:58So if it rains or anything, it's indestructible, right?
38:01That's right, yeah.
38:01It looks like it's wood, but it's not.
38:03And look at this.
38:04This is the refrigerator.
38:06Oh, my God, Missy, Jane.
38:11Well, even when you're cooking, you can turn this fan on,
38:14and it'll take all the cooking smells away up here.
38:18So everything's all professionally plumbed, electrical.
38:21Do you remember what you had before over here?
38:22Yes, yes, yes.
38:24But everything now is beautiful.
38:26This is beautiful kitchen.
38:28I know, like, more my kitchen inside.
38:30This is the top-ed kitchen.
38:32Do you see this roof?
38:33We took the whole thing down.
38:34Me, I was on the roof.
38:37I did the work, yeah.
38:37I saw it.
38:38She was up there.
38:40Well, look at it.
38:41Actually, you can see if you come here.
38:44Yeah, you see it.
38:45This is all new, like, look up here.
38:46All new, all new, everything completely new.
38:49Yeah.
38:49And higher.
38:50It's higher than it was, and now it's much stronger.
38:53She was too hard for me and my family.
38:55She's very strong.
38:57So one of the things we wanted was more shade.
39:00These guys came up with this brilliant idea.
39:01Look at this.
39:02Wow.
39:03This is on wire, so you can pull it.
39:05So you can have all sunshine, or if you want shade,
39:07you can pull it across.
39:09And it just concertinas back into here.
39:11Wow.
39:12When I need shade, oh my God, this is the best idea.
39:16I love it.
39:18Look at this.
39:19Wow, this is beautiful.
39:20I know.
39:21Beautiful, warm.
39:23And now it's comfortable.
39:24You remember you were sitting again.
39:25Yeah, yeah.
39:26This is more comfy.
39:30I put this in.
39:31Yes.
39:32With the nail gun and cutting it.
39:34The nice thing is, so these hedges will grow thick and high,
39:39nice and fast.
39:40So you'll have total privacy from your neighbor.
39:43They'll have total privacy over here.
39:45It'll look like you're in the middle of the forest.
39:47This is beautiful.
39:50Thank you so much.
39:51When I think about the changes that I've gone through in my life,
39:55that she's been there for, that she's seen close at hand,
39:58things that, you know, the public wouldn't know about.
40:01And she's like the rock for our family.
40:05This is our gift to you, you know.
40:08You give so much to us.
40:09So much to us.
40:10So much.
40:13Look at the reaction here.
40:15Here we go.
40:15Here we go.
40:17She, oh my God.
40:19It's so beautiful.
40:20Wow, wow.
40:22It's so nice.
40:22Here we can join them.
40:23Seeing my parents' reaction to the backyard,
40:25it made me so happy.
40:27Jane is so generous.
40:28They deserve the world.
40:29And I'm just so happy that they were able to do this for them.
40:33They took some pieces from my garden.
40:35I'm proud of them.
40:36Yeah, these succulents are actually from Jane's garden.
40:38Yes, they picked it.
40:38And then we put some grasses in.
40:40Yeah.
40:40Hi, CJ.
40:41I'm forever grateful.
40:43You are the best friend, the best box.
40:47Thank you so much for everything you see me.
40:49Aw.
40:49Aw.
40:51Love you so much.
40:52We've got company.
40:54Hey.
40:54Hi.
40:55Hi.
40:56Oh, hey.
40:57If it wasn't for you, I couldn't get up every day, go to work,
41:02know that my children, my home, my family, my friends,
41:05everyone is taken care of because you take care of them
41:09even better than me.
41:10Diana, I'm drinking a toast.
41:12We are all drinking toast to you and your beautiful family
41:15and to everything you've ever done for our family and always do.
41:19We love you.
41:20You change heaven and earth to make things happen for us.
41:24You've seen us in thick and thin.
41:26You've seen me happy and you've seen me really sad.
41:29And you've always been there for me.
41:31Always.
41:32I love you so much.
41:50Love you, too.
41:50Cheers.
41:51Cheers.
41:52Cheers.
41:53Cheers.
41:53Cheers.
41:54Cheers.
41:55Finally, all our dreams are coming true.
