00:00Welcome one and all to another episode of The Press Box. My name is Ben Han.
00:11Joining alongside once again is Ryan Bentley and Josh Partridge for another big episode,
00:16episode 97. And before we get into any of that, it's of course time for everybody's
00:20favourite segment, numerology. So boys, for those who are watching this, maybe on a few
00:28days later, this is obviously taken, it isn't live, shock horror. We are straight off the
00:34heels of the climactic finish to the England-India fifth test series that was drawn to one of
00:41the great test series really. And it came to a remarkable conclusion when India looked
00:48down and out, but they took a number of wickets and saved the game late, thanks to an inspired
00:54spell from everyone's favourite fast bowler, Mohamed Siraj. And the way I'm going to incorporate
01:00it to 97 is that Mohamed Siraj in his second innings figures conceded 104 runs for his five
01:08wickets. So if you take that 104 runs and then you look at the fact that England required
01:14seven runs when Gus Atkinson was bowled. So India won by six runs, but England required seven
01:22runs to win. 104 minus the seven required is of course 97. And wowee, what a start to show.
01:33But it only gets better from here because rumour has it this is going to be the best segment this show has ever
01:39produced according to the person who is delivering it. He said, you know, you can leave the gold logies,
01:47you can leave all this other stuff. This is must-see TV. And it is in a new spot right at the top of the order.
01:53It is Ryan's incredibly difficult sports quiz. Ryan, take it away.
01:58Well, after that massive build-up, it is here. It has arrived for another week. I believe Josh, you lead 2-1.
02:05And my question for you this week is as follows. How many individual goal kickers have there been in
02:11men's and women's NGFA Premier League?
02:16Yeah, right.
02:18Real simple question. Real simple answer.
02:21We're just talking about seniors, I presume?
02:22Just the seniors. Just the seniors, men's and women's.
02:24If anyone wants to answer it, feel free.
02:28I'll go with 127.
02:30127.
02:31Only had 240.
02:33Let's just have a concern.
02:35Ben Hand, that's an awesome guess. It was 243.
02:40Oh, Ben Hand, look at that.
02:42A terrible guess after that as well, Josh.
02:44Completely under-hold.
02:45Well done, Ben. 2-1 in the series now, I believe. That's quite remarkable out of you.
02:49Gee whee, we've got a great fan going here. 2-1 in the series once again.
02:52Gee whiz.
02:53And with that, we now move on to the first of our two round ball games that we're covering
02:58today is over here.
03:00Netball, the Grand Finals were held at the Silverdome.
03:04As is tradition, Northern clubs dominated the day.
03:08Southern clubs really need to get that active to gear.
03:11No, but we will go to you, Josh, first of all.
03:14The first game was played between Hawks and the ever-unlucky Crips Waratah, who have played
03:21in their eighth straight Grand Final.
03:23But take us through what happened.
03:24Yeah, so they've only won one of those eight.
03:27And that wasn't this year.
03:29This year was won by the Northern Hawks, 54-38.
03:32The first time in 27 years that they had won the underage competition.
03:39So it's obviously massive for them.
03:42Best on Ground was, we'll play MVP probably, not Best on Ground, that's probably the wrong
03:47terminology, but was Sophie Sherriff.
03:51Not Isabella, Sophie Sherriff.
03:53I looked at the wrong thing here and saw the name Isabella and I got scared.
03:58She had 38, she scored 38 goals, which was the same as Crips, so that's obviously massive.
04:04And the difference was in the first 10 minutes where the Hawks really came out and just dominated
04:09proceedings.
04:10Yeah, both Sherriffs were really good, which is what my notes say and it's really tripped
04:14me over there.
04:15But no, Sophie was the best at field.
04:17Yeah, absolutely.
04:18She was obviously, she made Tasmanian history when she became the first MVP out of national
04:23championships in the under-17s earlier this year.
04:25She's had an amazing year.
04:26And as you say, it's pretty remarkable that they haven't won this competition for 27 years
04:30considering the senior team has made 10 straight grand finals and obviously has just been an
04:35absolute powerhouse.
04:36But then it was obviously then the Cavs played the Hawks and really it wasn't really a contest
04:44from the outset.
04:45So it's quite much like how the Hawks did to Crips in the first game.
04:50Haley McDougal was in periods up front, finished the year with 96% shooting efficiency or accuracy.
04:58And yeah, just was amazing but wasn't the best at ground because it was, I shouldn't say
05:05best at ground either.
05:06It wasn't MVP because it was 18-year-old Paige O'Neal.
05:09Just a remarkable form of intercepting balls left and right.
05:12The Hawks had only scored 10 goals up until half-time.
05:16So it really shows you the level of defensive dominance.
05:19And Ryan, I know you've covered some of the previous derbies.
05:22They were really the dominant side all year, weren't they?
05:24Yeah, it was only really the first derby where the Northern Hawks looked like a chance.
05:28But the outside of that, the Cavs lived far too dominant.
05:31Pedro O'Neal was good in all those games really.
05:34Blocking shots more I think in those first two games, less so intercepting.
05:38But yeah, the Cavs, they were going to be hard to beat and they proved it on Saturday.
05:42Yeah, and with their 10th flag and 19 tries over 30 years, it takes us on to the landmark
05:49segment.
05:54Now boys, with what's happened with another Hawks-Cavs grand final, the third straight
05:58one, and we've obviously come to the end of our state league era in footy but we had
06:03a fair bit of success in that one as well.
06:05Who has enjoyed the most state league dominance?
06:09Cavs, Hawks, North Lonnie or Lonnie?
06:13I'm going to start with you first, Joshua.
06:15That's a fantastic order of business from you there, Ben.
06:21I came into this somewhat thinking the Hawks but you're a little sad about the Cavs'
06:2710 grand finals, 10 premierships in 19.
06:3019 grand finals over 30 years plus 14 19's or junior grand finals over that, over a slightly
06:37smaller period of time.
06:39Yeah, I think my view is somewhat skewed by, since the fact that I've worked here, it's
06:44been the Hawks.
06:45So I'm going to lock that in, even though it probably statistically might be the Cavs.
06:49I think the Hawks have really, and even to do what they did this year, they lost the
06:54best shooter in TNL history in Ashmore and to still make the final and to still be pretty
07:01dominant against other sides as well.
07:04It's a testament to their success.
07:06And that's not at all counting out North Launceston.
07:08They've been brilliant as well.
07:10I want to preface that before I get emails on emails and phone calls from a particular
07:16president.
07:17But North Launceston have also been very good during their state league tenure as well.
07:23Yeah, absolutely.
07:24Poor Launceston didn't even get a look in there.
07:26Who are you going with, right?
07:28I'll go the opposite to Josh.
07:29I'll go with the Cavs.
07:30I mean, 10 out of 19 premierships, like, come on.
07:33Simple as that and the 14 junior premiership as well.
07:36Simple.
07:37Yeah.
07:38Simple.
07:39Yeah, absolutely.
07:40Look, I'll, for the sake of giving footy some love, I'll go with North Launceston.
07:45I think with a much wider spread, a larger pool of talent, maybe, we can easily say that
07:54North Launceston is the most successful in that state league era in, you know, what is
07:59probably the most competitive sport in the state.
08:01And I think what they've done as well this year should be really commended.
08:04And we won't at all discount Launceston, like what they did.
08:07Yeah.
08:08They, for a little bit there, were near the bottom of the state league table.
08:11And to be able to build up what they did under Coach Mitchell Thorpe there for a little
08:14bit and they obviously won three premierships in a row.
08:17So, they were fantastic.
08:18They just didn't quite meet the heights of the others.
08:21And that's more about the others rather than only themselves.
08:23That's it.
08:24That's it.
08:25They all got claims to a great period of success.
08:27Now, moving on to the other round bowl game we have today is, of course, soccer.
08:32It was a pretty big weekend for Northern Clubs for two pretty contrasting reasons, Ryan.
08:38Take us through, first of all, why it was such a big day at Windsor Park.
08:43Between two sides.
08:44It hasn't seen a lot of success this year.
08:46No.
08:47Lonnie United versus Riverside Olympic.
08:49Usually a grudge match.
08:50Always is a grudge match.
08:51But it was a little bit extra special this time because Lonnie United recruited three imports
08:56at the start of this season.
08:57They all left.
08:58And guess where they went?
08:59Riverside Olympic.
09:00So, there was a bit on it.
09:02It was the first time the two teams had met since joining, since those guys jumped ship.
09:08And, unfortunately for Launceston United, Kingsley Eshin, who was one of their imports, kicked the first
09:13Riverside Olympic and it was like, oh no.
09:15All sorts of trouble.
09:16But.
09:17Big celebration.
09:18Came to Helda, gave him a big hug.
09:20He didn't seem to love it, but that's okay.
09:22Helda's not easy to please.
09:25But.
09:26And then it was time for Lonnie United's mid-season recruits to step up.
09:30So, last gasp.
09:31Desperation.
09:32Got some guys in.
09:33Yusuf Touré, three minutes later, barged one of the Riverside Olympics defenders out
09:37of the way.
09:38And then just buried it in the bottom left corner and won all with half an hour left.
09:42And then probably the biggest half an hour in Lonnie United's NPL history really.
09:46Ramiro Villar, in the 88th minute I believe, got them ahead and boy, the celebrations were
09:53immense.
09:54The bench came charging off, piled on top.
09:56And then Yusuf Touré, deep into stoppage time, he put the cherry on top.
10:01He ran away, wheeled away, took his jersey off, wheeled around above his head.
10:05Clearly loved it.
10:06Bench surrounded him.
10:07And Lonnie United got their first ever win against Riverside Olympic in NPL Tavs.
10:12So, massive day for them.
10:14Yeah.
10:15Yeah, first ever Northern Derby win in general.
10:18And there's a wonderful story that Ryan's written about that day and Yusuf Touré, the
10:23import player who won the game, or scored the goals to win the game for the club.
10:28I really urge you guys to read it online or in the paper.
10:31It's, yeah, a wonderful insight into how that day unfolded.
10:34And then there was also a bit of history up at Prospect Park as well, where we had
10:39Launceston United record, oh, Launceston City I should say, record the largest ever win,
10:45that they've ever recorded in NPL Tavs with the most amount of goals.
10:4812-3, they beat Clarence.
10:50So, a remarkable day up there as well.
10:52And they are right in the title hunt too.
10:54And now, just to finish off with this wonderful round bowl game episode, we'll go to Josh's
11:02local hero.
11:03A fair few athletes named in this episode, but I'm going to go with Paige O'Neill as
11:10my local hero of the week.
11:12Winning MVP, best of field, whatever you want to call it, in an Open's Grand Final at the
11:18age of 18 is superb.
11:20And we've talked about her being one of the rising stars of Northern Tasmanian and Tasmanian
11:25sport for years now.
11:26So, Paige, congratulations on a massive week.
11:29This, once again, will be the best thing you've earned.
11:32So, enjoy it.
11:34Definitely.
11:35And that is all the time we have.
11:36We'll see you guys for the next one.
