Link Jones, un ancien bandit, mène une vie rangée auprès de sa femme et de ses enfants. Ses concitoyens le chargent de ramener de Fort Worth la nouvelle institutrice du village. Dans le train, Link fait la connaissance de Billie Ellis, une chanteuse, et de Sam Beasley, un joueur professionnel. Le train est attaqué par des malfaiteurs. Link et ses deux compagnons de voyage sont abandonnés sur la voie. Ils se réfugient dans une cabane apparemment inhabitée, mais en réalité occupée par les hors-la-loi qui viennent de les dépouiller.
