China reports thousands of chikungunya cases amid outbreak of mosquito-borne virus

In the hardest-hit city of Foshan, patients have been hospitalised and residents are encouraged to take steps to prevent the virus from spreading.

00:00China is experiencing an alarming outbreak of chikungunya, a mosquito-borne infection,
00:08with thousands of cases reported in the south. Chinese authorities said an imported case
00:13triggered local transmission in July but did not specify where the infection originated.
00:20To prevent further spread of the disease, authorities are focused on eliminating
00:23mosquito breeding grounds and stagnant water. Residents are urged to remove stagnant water
00:29from their homes, including from flowerpots and spare bottles, or face steep fines.
00:35In the city of Foshan, officials also released thousands of mosquito-eating fish
00:40into lakes and other water bodies.
