00:00What?
00:03That little piece of gravel is what I'm supposed to pull up on?
00:07Two sisters and one of their boyfriends
00:09are seeking the impossible,
00:11a house on Long Island, New York,
00:13where they can live together without things getting awkward.
00:16I'm already a third wheel in this.
00:18You're not the third wheel.
00:20Maybe I'm the third wheel.
00:22Rachelle is used to getting her way.
00:24Exactly what I wanted, a white kitchen.
00:27Beautiful.
00:28But little sister Lakota has her own demands,
00:30like a separate living space that works for her.
00:33So I'm not getting that much lighting in here.
00:35Not to mention she barely even knows George,
00:37who's pushing to take on a fixer,
00:39as if their unique living situation
00:41wasn't already stressful enough.
00:43There's a leak there.
00:44Look at all these radiators.
00:46There's so much damage.
00:48But it can be done.
00:49Hold on.
00:50This is not what I wanted.
00:58It's so nice to see you.
00:59So nice to see you.
01:00Hi, Mommy.
01:01My name is Rachelle.
01:02This is my boyfriend, George,
01:03and my little sister, Lakota.
01:04I currently live in Miami,
01:05and I'm moving back to Long Island
01:06to be close to family
01:07and be back on my home turf.
01:09Hi, sister!
01:13So nice to see you.
01:16So nice to see you.
01:17Hi, Mommy.
01:18My name is Rochelle.
01:19This is my boyfriend, George, and my little sister, Lakota.
01:23I currently live in Miami, and I'm moving back to Long Island to be close to family and
01:29be back on my home turf.
01:30Oh, George.
01:31Nice to meet you.
01:32It's nice to meet you.
01:34I'm living in Ohio currently and looking to make the move to Long Island.
01:37We're thinking about next steps as far as having a family, and I feel like we're excited
01:41to buy a home and lay down some roots.
01:44You look exactly like the pictures.
01:46Oh, I see.
01:47That's always good, right?
01:48Rochelle had this idea that she wanted to buy a house, and then I wanted to get out of
01:52my mom's house, so I was like, you know what?
01:54This might be a great idea, especially all of us putting our money together.
01:58It's just more feasible.
02:00Nice to meet you, finally.
02:02It's really great to meet you.
02:03I've known George for a couple hours, so there's still that anxiety there, but I'm
02:11hoping for the best.
02:12I think that North Babylon would be a great option.
02:16That's the town that we grew up in.
02:18There is a big park there.
02:19It's called Belmont Lake State Park.
02:21I think that you would really enjoy it there.
02:23We know to look for a high ranch.
02:24Yeah, absolutely.
02:25You definitely need that space separation.
02:27Yes.
02:28Yes.
02:29This is a crazy dynamic.
02:31You need to have a space, yeah, because one could be upstairs, one could be down.
02:35In terms of style, I love an open, light-filled home.
02:38There's something about it that kind of holistically brings you up and brings out your best.
02:42I would like an open layout with the kitchen and the living room being very open and spacious,
02:48marble countertops and flooring, and for it to be white and with clean lines.
02:54It would be nice if you were able to have your own kitchenette.
02:57I would say, like, nice for you to have a kitchenette, but I'll have a kitchen for sure.
03:01It's not going to work without that.
03:03I would also love to have a bathroom, you know, for us to, you know, have some space and have some privacy.
03:10I don't know yet, George, if, like, you put the seat down.
03:12I have no idea.
03:13I know, Rochelle, your makeup's everywhere.
03:16And so I just want to make sure that that's maybe top, top, top of the list.
03:22With the three of us, it can get complicated.
03:24I feel like I'm going to be the one in the middle.
03:27So I am pretty nervous about how this will pan out.
03:31We could find something that has, like, a room for a studio so I could do my art.
03:35Oh, yeah.
03:36That would be perfect.
03:37I just think we're chasing a ghost on that long list at any of our budgets.
03:41And I'm chasing happiness.
03:43George wants to stay at $5.50, and we want to stay at $6.50.
03:46So trying to meet somewhere in the middle, I think, is going to be difficult.
03:50Did you guys ever consider Grandma's house?
03:52Where is she going?
03:53She's going with Aunt Sheila.
03:55North Carolina.
03:56Because it's too much for her, and she's got to go up and down the stairs.
03:59It needs a ton of work, and I'm sure George would really love that because he wants a fixer-upper.
04:05I think our budget loves that.
04:07I don't want to be fixing anything.
04:09Yeah.
04:10I don't want to live in a construction zone.
04:12I'm already a third wheel in this, so I'm going to need some of those things that, like, I really want.
04:18You're not the third wheel.
04:20We love you.
04:21I think I'm the third wheel.
04:22It's like a permanent third wheel living situation.
04:23I think I'm the third wheel.
04:24I think I'm the third wheel.
04:25It's like a permanent third wheel living situation.
04:34Brentwood is a nice neighborhood.
04:36There's a lot of colonial-style homes here.
04:39Seems very historic and charming.
04:41Are there any parks nearby or anything like that?
04:43I haven't seen any.
04:44I haven't seen any parks nearby, and it's definitely a bit far from Mom's house.
04:50I mean, it's only 15 minutes.
04:52This one is listed for $698,000, so that's way above even Lakota and I's budget.
05:00Santa's got to be pretty high on this one because the price is high.
05:04Wow.
05:05This is a really big house.
05:06It has a lot of curb appeal.
05:07And a big lot.
05:08Unfortunately, there's no driveway or walkway.
05:11What?
05:12That little piece of gravel is what I'm supposed to pull up on.
05:16Let's take a whole look at it.
05:18Let's take a look.
05:19Hi, Lauren.
05:20Hello.
05:21Welcome to Brentwood.
05:23This is awesome.
05:25Brentwood is a really great location simply because it's very close to all the major parkways.
05:31Lots of bars, lots of shopping.
05:33I know this one is a little bit more than what you wanted to spend, but I think this is the one.
05:38I hope the inside is really nice.
05:39It will be.
05:40It will be.
05:42Wow.
05:43Look at this.
05:44The idea of the three of them living together, it's different, I will say that.
05:48But you have the two sisters, they have their own relationship.
05:51And then you have the partners that have their own relationship.
05:54So sometimes combining the two can get, create a little turbulence.
05:59They did keep the nice charm of the colonial, but everything completely renovated and updated.
06:04This is exactly what I wanted.
06:06A white kitchen with clean lines.
06:09Soft clothes drawers.
06:11Ooh, that's perfect.
06:13The sparkly countertops.
06:14Absolutely.
06:15I really like this.
06:16I think they're called granite.
06:18Why don't we take a look outside?
06:21This is a huge yard.
06:24Wow.
06:25Huge yard.
06:26But I'm just wondering, like, who's going to mow this?
06:29Rochelle, you like mowing lawns?
06:33You guys can hire someone.
06:34That would be expensive.
06:36So now.
06:37Very nice.
06:38Now, I want you to take a look upstairs.
06:40I love the dark hardwood flooring.
06:43It's giving luxury.
06:45Absolutely.
06:46There's three bedrooms up here.
06:48Oh, is that right?
06:49Wow.
06:50Yes.
06:51Yes.
06:52Look at the space in the primary bedroom.
06:55Wow.
06:56Oh, wow.
06:57This is a bedroom here, huh?
06:59Yes.
07:00This is great.
07:01This is feeling very open and inviting.
07:04Another full bathroom.
07:06Oh, wow.
07:07This is a big one.
07:08I love the shower.
07:09I feel like this could have been bigger.
07:11Yeah.
07:12Yeah, I agree.
07:13That's like a double vanity.
07:14You could still purchase a double vanity because you have the space.
07:17Well, not a lot of purchases are going to be getting done after a $6.98.
07:20Mmm.
07:29Look at this.
07:31Oh, my.
07:33This is a nice little kitchenette area for me.
07:35Look at this.
07:36I'm loving this.
07:37This is very spacious.
07:39I would say the only thing is, like, the ceilings are a bit low,
07:42but I really need to see what my bedroom's going to look like.
07:45Okay, well, let's take a look.
07:46I should call them bonus rooms because there are no closets,
07:49but, you know, you could easily go get a closet and install it right in.
07:53There's not that much light coming in.
07:55Yeah.
07:56That's a little blocked as well, so I'm not getting that much lighting in here.
07:59But you see, the space is still here.
08:01I think this house is really beautiful for Rochelle and George,
08:04but it's not so great for me.
08:06I have two rooms, yes, but one room has no windows.
08:09It's kind of like they're winning,
08:11and then I'm kind of off to the side or maybe off to the dungeon.
08:15The pressure is on me to make this thing work for everybody.
08:19This house can work just because we won't feel like we're invading each other's space.
08:24Oh, yeah.
08:25Looking at Rochelle's face, I can see how excited she is.
08:27It meets a lot of the needs, but pricey.
08:29Of course, up here, it's beautiful, but then I have a dungeon.
08:34Everything is brand new. There's clean lines.
08:37I just really love the open layout in this home.
08:40But at $6.98, that's kind of beyond the top of what we were really looking to spend.
08:44Other houses, four bedroom, three bathroom, are selling upwards of $690,000.
08:50So, you know, you might not have a lot of equity going into it,
08:54but you're getting everything that you want.
08:56This is not like an ideal situation for me, like with the low ceiling,
09:00and I feel like I'm settling.
09:02If Lakota's not happy, eventually we're not going to be happy either.
09:05So they see something that'll make Lakota feel less like an afterthought.
09:09But is this it? Oh, my.
09:12Where's the rest of it?
09:13What's the neighborhood like in general, just since I guess you guys know it well, yeah?
09:25I really actually love this neighborhood.
09:27It's very safe. It's very suburban.
09:30Isn't this one on the same street as your mom's house?
09:33Yes. She's just a few blocks down from this house.
09:36That also means that we're close to Belmont Lake State Park, which I'm super happy about.
09:41The house that we're going to be seeing today is listed at $595.
09:45Okay.
09:46The catch is that the house is on the smaller side, which could make things get awkward real fast for a new couple and a little sister roommate.
09:54This is tiny.
09:55Maybe your art studio can be in the garage.
09:58Or your office.
10:00Yes.
10:01Okay.
10:02Hi, guys.
10:03Hi.
10:04Hey.
10:05This is a cute little patio.
10:06Hello.
10:07Yeah.
10:08It is nice.
10:09It's potential, doesn't it?
10:10It does.
10:11First impression?
10:12It's compact.
10:13It is a bungalow, so bungalows do tend to be a bit smaller.
10:15You guys are the first people to see this house.
10:17Oh.
10:18I haven't officially listed it yet.
10:19It's a lot larger inside than what it looks.
10:21Okay.
10:22I love how they use the space, right?
10:23We love that.
10:24All right.
10:25You'll notice nice open concepts.
10:27Wow.
10:28Very clean lines.
10:29Absolutely.
10:30Love these hardwood floors.
10:32The house was built in about the 1930s.
10:34So everything has been updated, replaced from the studs to the sheetrock.
10:39But once you put the furniture in here, it's going to be very tight.
10:43Yeah.
10:44Let's go into the first bedroom.
10:45This would be the larger of two bedrooms that are upstairs.
10:48We're thinking of a queen size bed in here, but-
10:51You might only be able to fit a bunk bed.
10:54A little twin size race car bed in here.
10:58So let's take a look at the other bedroom.
11:02Open canvas to pretty much do whatever you want.
11:04And that closet looks tight.
11:05I'm like, can't even fit a blazer in there?
11:07Hmm.
11:10It's a bit compact.
11:11Oh, wow.
11:12George can't even fit in that closet.
11:15Pretty much everything that you guys individually want on a smaller scale.
11:20Agreed that it is a bit small in here.
11:23Okay.
11:24This house does have two bathrooms.
11:26Okay.
11:27And so this vanity is very small.
11:29You can barely fit a toothbrush and toothpaste on it.
11:31Mm-hmm.
11:33I do believe that this kitchen is beautiful.
11:36I like all of these upgrades, but there's no open layout.
11:40I'm wondering if we would be able to share this kitchen with the limited counter space.
11:45I know I like a big air fryer.
11:47I like my coffee set and my tea set.
11:49So where would your stuff go?
11:51There is space for another kitchen.
11:54Let's go take a look downstairs.
12:01Lakota, this would be perfect for your art studio and your bedroom.
12:05Oh, yeah.
12:06Absolutely.
12:07Two in one.
12:08Oh, I love this.
12:09Nice and big.
12:10What's in here?
12:11It's a whole big bedroom.
12:12That is a big bedroom.
12:13Yeah, this is a lot of room.
12:14I can definitely fit even a queen or a king.
12:17I won't have to have a bunk bed like you guys.
12:20Yeah, this is bigger than the bedrooms upstairs.
12:23When this house was originally built, this was the kitchen.
12:27So if you ever wanted to put a kitchen nook back in this area,
12:30everything's right behind these walls.
12:32Oh, interesting.
12:33Ooh.
12:34Perfect.
12:35I do really like it for the space that I get.
12:38I have the bigger bedroom, the bigger bathroom, the bigger living space.
12:42Not a lot of space in here for me.
12:43Wait a minute.
12:44What did I get myself into here?
12:45Because where do I fit into this little space, right?
12:48This little bungalow.
12:49With this dynamic, I mean, I'm compromising as much as they are.
12:54Take a look at how large the yard is.
12:55Wow.
12:56And then they have a garage.
12:57Yeah.
12:58And there's a garage.
12:59Huge plus.
13:00Absolutely.
13:01I'm thinking about listing it around $595,000.
13:03I can tell you now there is equity in the house.
13:06Homes on this block sold for upwards of $620,000, $630,000.
13:11Wow.
13:12Mm-hmm.
13:13But you know, it's on the minimum side in terms of the amount of rooms we would need.
13:16It is a very small space and there's not enough storage, I don't think, for our belongings.
13:21Just put your stuff in the garage.
13:23They got big garage.
13:26The trio decides to see another option that could ease the stress of their odd living situation if they use their imaginations.
13:34Oh, no.
13:35Oh.
13:36Whoo.
13:41Wow, this feels very nostalgic.
13:43It does.
13:45George has convinced Rochelle and Lakota to take a look at their grandma's fixer-upper.
13:50With the right updates, it could be their best bet at getting enough space to keep everyone happy.
13:55There was a park we just passed by.
13:56Yeah, Belmont Lake State Park is gorgeous.
13:59This neighborhood is super cool because, first of all, we're very close to family.
14:03We're close to my mom's house.
14:05But I'm also like, oh, I don't know.
14:08Because the last time that I seen grandma's house, it wasn't in the best condition.
14:11So, George, I'm not really sure if you know what you're in for.
14:15Mommy did say that she would give us a little bit of a discount.
14:19$450,000.
14:20That's way below our budget.
14:23The price is, you know, attractive.
14:25Yeah, there's six bedrooms, but every single bedroom needs work.
14:30Hello.
14:31How are you?
14:32How's grandma?
14:33She's doing great.
14:34She's in Tampa right now.
14:36Oh, awesome.
14:37I'm so jealous.
14:38I'm so jealous.
14:39The house looks exactly the same.
14:40It's been 60 years and not really much has changed with this house.
14:44It's not the move-in ready house that I wanted.
14:48Yeah, it's a little scary in there.
14:50Yeah.
14:51Oh, no.
14:53Oof.
14:54Oh, wow.
14:55These stairs.
14:56This banister is very old school.
14:59I'm not really feeling this at all.
15:01Very shaky.
15:02The flooring.
15:03Look at these stains here.
15:05Yikes.
15:06Look at these stains here.
15:07That might be something with the roof.
15:09My mom did mention that the roof needs to be redone.
15:11The roof is very expensive.
15:12Absolutely.
15:13But, you know, a house, I'd say three blocks away, just sold for $780,000.
15:18Oh, wow.
15:19High ranch.
15:20Now, granted, it was totally renovated.
15:22Mm-hmm.
15:23You know, so the value is definitely there.
15:27The dag.
15:28I love the dag.
15:29The way it overlooks everything with the woods.
15:31And we love the outdoors.
15:33Yeah, there is a lot of memories in this house.
15:35Like, we used to play kickball out here, and we used to play in a little kiddie pool all
15:40of the time.
15:41Yeah.
15:42This deck has been here since I can remember.
15:44If this were completely redone, we could do some hosting out here.
15:48Mm-hmm.
15:52This kitchen, you know this is not what I envision.
15:56Where's my marble countertops?
15:58Yeah.
15:59They ain't here.
16:01It sounds like a generation of deferred maintenance.
16:03Right?
16:04This was grandma's room.
16:05It's grandma's room.
16:06Yeah.
16:07I was envisioning more of like a primary suite.
16:10Yeah.
16:11Yeah.
16:12And so this isn't really giving me that vibe.
16:15Yeah.
16:16Oh, wow.
16:17Oh, coming on.
16:18Whoa.
16:19That looks serious.
16:20So, George, this is your fixer-upper.
16:22I mean, what do you think?
16:24There's a leak there.
16:25Look at all these radiators.
16:26Oh, wow.
16:27They need to be completely redone.
16:29Floor looking like a crime scene, but when you're $150,000 under market, there's a reason
16:33that you get those kind of prices.
16:35Mm-hmm.
16:36Aside from the grandma discount.
16:37Probably at least $150,000 worth of work.
16:41Yeah.
16:42Too much work.
16:43Too much work.
16:44Yeah.
16:45Is it still the same bathroom?
16:46It's the same bathroom, Lauren.
16:48Oh, my goodness.
16:49Ugh.
16:50Not what I envisioned.
16:51Well, the floors are a little bit newer down here.
16:57There's a lot of light.
16:58I can see myself down here painting.
17:01But I do believe that the flooring is on a bit of a tilt.
17:05Perfect for your dance parties.
17:06We could be in here.
17:10There's something to be said for keeping something in the family, right?
17:13I mean, generational, just the storyline, the legacy.
17:16Yeah.
17:17Aside from generational wealth kind of preservation.
17:18Absolutely.
17:19Yeah.
17:20Absolutely.
17:21Like maybe it was a garage?
17:22Yeah.
17:23Okay.
17:24That's why it's a little bit bigger.
17:25Whew.
17:26But look at it as what it could be.
17:28I mean, there's got to be, you know, it's worth the discussion at least, right?
17:31Hold on.
17:32We need to talk.
17:34This is worse than what I thought.
17:36Yeah.
17:37This is beyond, we're going to be way outside of our budget.
17:40And I know that George thinks he knows maybe everything, but he's not Superman.
17:46And this needs a miracle.
17:47How crazy would this be to take on?
17:49You could spend close to $200,000, you know, getting it the exact way that you guys want.
17:54I mean, it will be worth it, but it's a big headache sometimes.
17:58What are you guys thinking?
17:59I think the long term is there for sure here.
18:02Mm-hmm.
18:03But that short term convenience absolutely isn't.
18:05If this was a car, it would be totaled.
18:08But it can be done.
18:09I do feel some pressure on me because I'm the middle person between Lakota and George.
18:13But when I imagined buying my first house, this was not it.
18:23You have a beautiful home, by the way.
18:25Yeah.
18:26Oh, thank you.
18:28This is gorgeous.
18:29George, Rochelle, and Lakota can't decide on a house that works for all of them.
18:32Their experiment in communal living could end in disaster.
18:36The Brentwood Colonial.
18:38I think that's the house that hit everything each of you are looking for.
18:41Everything except the price.
18:43We're paying well above what we want to pay.
18:45However, the renovation's done really well.
18:47The open layout, it is literally perfect for hosting.
18:51I mean, it's a lot of what you wanted.
18:53It was so small downstairs.
18:54The ceilings were touching my head and just me having no windows.
18:59So I wish you could just think a little bit about me.
19:03What about the bungalow?
19:05I love the bungalow.
19:06It's turnkey.
19:07It's new.
19:08It's modern.
19:09I have enough space for my art studio.
19:11We're so close to mommy.
19:12And that's really what we wanted.
19:14There's a lot of compromise on the upstairs part.
19:16We have a really awkward layout, small rooms.
19:18It's really turnkey.
19:20The only thing I will say with that house is that there's not enough storage.
19:23And this is where I think grandma's house has a certain benefit.
19:26A little short-term pain for a long-term gain.
19:29$450,000.
19:31Well under market value.
19:32That's true.
19:33It's close to mommy's house.
19:34It's close to Belmont Lake State Park.
19:35I mean, the house is really big.
19:37It has a lot of potential.
19:38The only thing is, how long is it going to take for us to move in?
19:42It's a lot of work.
19:43It's a huge project.
19:44If we do the work, it's our vision.
19:45We kind of add a second life to grandma's house.
19:48I just don't know if I can see the vision there.
20:01Wow.
20:02Grandma kept a lot of our things.
20:04That's really nice.
20:05We decided to buy grandma's house.
20:08This was the best choice because we have the split level.
20:12There's six bedrooms.
20:13So whether it's an art studio or two offices, like we'll have plenty of space to do our own thing where we want to do it.
20:20This feels unreal packing up her stuff now.
20:22It does.
20:23I came around to George's fixer-upper idea because I'm kind of excited, like George thought, like for that project, to be able to make it our own.
20:32So houses like this go for about $600,000, $650,000, and we ended up paying $450,000 for the house.
20:41It was definitely a family discount.
20:43Also, it allows us to make it what we want to make it.
20:46How do you see this looking?
20:47I just want to get rid of this wall completely.
20:50I really want that open concept.
20:52Yeah.
20:53We're planning on moving in probably within a month or two, depending on when those key renovations take place, like the roof and the plumbing stuff.
20:59Definitely.
21:00So we're going to be redoing the kitchen, both of the bathrooms.
21:04When we get in, it's going to be great, and I'm sure it's going to be beautiful, and it's going to be exactly what we want.
21:09I'm optimistic for the future when we're finally living together.
21:12I think we all just feel really right about making this move.
21:15Every room in this house holds different memories, and I would really love for my children and their children to carry on this house.
21:24We're keeping a family legacy alive.
