00:00what you're looking at is a ghost once alive but now deceased once upon a time it was a baseball
00:10stadium that housed a major league ball club known as the Hoboken Zephyrs now it houses nothing but
00:16memories and a wind that stirs in the high grass of what was once an outfield a wind that sometimes
00:22bears a faint ghostly resemblance to the roar of a crowd that once sat here we're back in time now
00:28when the Hoboken Zephyrs was still a part of the National League and this mausoleum of memories
00:34was an honest to Pete stadium but since this is strictly a story of make-believe it has to start
00:39this way once upon a time in Hoboken New Jersey it was tryout day no he's not yet on the field
00:48you're about to meet a most unusual fella a left-handed pitcher named Casey
00:53grand-looking bunch of boys huh we expect on the all-stars
01:23you stick up a tryout sign for a last division club that happens to be 31 games out of first
01:27this is the material you usually round up this is the material you usually round up you're general
01:32manager of this club why don't you get me some ball players you'd know what to do with them 20 games
01:37out of fourth place and the only big average we got is a manager with a widest mouth in either league
01:43maybe you better get reminded when the Hoboken Zephyrs win one game we got to call it a streak

02:22he's a lefty lefty shmefty what's the difference he's got more than one arm and less than four he's for

05:18well guess
05:21now what I mean is
05:23it's hard to be chronological
05:24when discussing Casey's age
05:26because uh
05:26he's only been in existence
05:28three weeks
05:28now what I mean is that uh
05:32he has the physique
05:33and the mind
05:33of a boy of 22
05:34but in terms of how long
05:36he's been here
05:36well now
05:37the answer to that would be
05:39three weeks
05:40want to go over that again
05:44oh it's not too difficult really
05:46you see I made Casey
05:47I built him

08:06you know
08:06don't ever say that

11:11training oh i think casey will come through for you mr gary yeah what's in us for you doc oh you
11:18mean with casey oh just scientific it's all purely experimental you know i think casey's some sort
11:26of a superman i'd like to have that proven once i built a home economist a marvelous cook i gained
11:3446 pounds before i had to dismantle her now with casey's skills i considered that with his strength
11:40and accuracy he'd be a baseball pitcher now in order to have that proved i had to have him pitch in
11:46competition and as an acid test to pitch in absolutely the worst ball team i could find
11:52thanks a lot doc you've got a lot of class play ball
12:01here
12:16right
12:46No fracture, no concussion, reflexes seem normal.
13:09I think you're going to be all right, Mr. Casey.
13:11Oh, boy, I could breathe again.
13:13All I kept thinking about was, there goes Casey, there goes the pennant, there goes the series.
13:18There goes your career.
13:21Yes, sir, Mr. Casey, I think you're in good shape here.
13:25Although when I heard how hard that ball hit you, I wondered to myself how, uh, how, uh...
13:32Cough, Mr. Casey.
13:53What's wrong?
13:58Well, there's nothing wrong.
14:00What are you prying for?
14:01Well, uh, there's not a thing wrong.
14:03Everything is just fine.
14:04It's, it's just that...
14:05Just that what?
14:07Well, this, uh, this man doesn't have any pulse.
14:10No, uh, heartbeat.
14:12This, uh, this man isn't alive.
14:16You'll have to come out now, Mr. McGarry.
14:18What's this all about, Mouth?
14:20What are you trying to pull off?
14:23Well, you're not going to like this, Beasley, but...
14:25Uh, Doctor, I think you should know this before you go any further.
14:30This man hasn't a pulse or a heartbeat because he doesn't have a heart.
14:34He's a robot.
14:36A what?
14:37That's right, a robot.
14:39You're sure?
14:40By all means, I've built him.
14:44And he's been pitching for the Hoboken Zephyrs.
14:49Under the circumstances, as team physician, I'm afraid I must notify the baseball commissioner.
14:53Uh, Casey, move over.
15:02Article 6, Section 2, the baseball code.
15:06I quote, a team shall consist of nine men.
15:11End of quote.
15:12Men, understand?
15:14Not robots.
15:15He's suspended.
15:16That's my final decision.
15:19Commissioner, to all intents and purposes, he is human.
15:24Casey.
15:27Talk to him.
15:28Tell him about yourself.
15:30What should I say?
15:32Now, you see, he talks better than me.
15:34And he's a lot smarter than most of those muttonheads I got in the club.
15:36He is not human.
15:38How human do you want him?
15:39He's got arms and legs and a face and he talks.
15:42And no heart.
15:43He doesn't even own a heart.
15:45How could he be human without a heart?
15:47Beasley hasn't got a heart either.
15:48He owns 40% of the club.
15:49That's it, gentlemen.
15:51He doesn't have a heart.
15:52That means he isn't human.
15:53That's a clear violation of the baseball code.
15:55Therefore, he doesn't play.
15:57Mr. Commissioner, suppose we gave him a heart.
16:00If that's the essential thing that makes him different,
16:03I think I could operate and supply him with a heart.
16:05You can do that.
16:08No trouble at all.
16:11Do you want to play?
16:14Of course he wants to play.
16:21You're sure?
16:22I guarantee it.
16:25If he were to be given a heart, would you classify him as a...
16:30Well, what I mean is, would you call him a...
16:32You had me fooled even without one.
16:34All right, all right.
16:38With a heart.
16:39I'll give him a temporary okay until the league meeting in October.
16:42Then we'll have to take it up.
16:45The other clubs are going to scream bloody murder.
16:49I can just hear DeRocher now.
16:52Well, then it's all settled.
16:54Casey gets a heart and accreditation as being a human
16:56and the Hoboken Zephyr.
16:59Take it, Mouthy.
17:00The Hoboken Zephyrs win the pennant for the first time in 23 years.
17:11Operator.
17:14Operator.
17:17Operator, are you sure you're ringing the right number?
17:19Yeah, Operator, that's it.
17:24Thank you very much, Operator.
17:26Any news?
17:27I don't know.
17:28The Operator can't get any answer at Dr. Stillman's house.
17:31Maybe he's still in the middle of the operation.
17:33So he's still in the middle of the operation.
17:34What's the matter?
17:35He can't use one hand to pick up a phone?
17:38Well, I can't wait any longer.
17:39I've got to get in the lineup.
17:41Corrigan, you start.
17:42Followed by O'Hara, Smith, and Jones.
17:47Now, listen, you guys.
17:49That's the enemy out there.
17:51That's the New York Giants.
17:54And while you're out there playing today,
17:56I want you to remember there's a big fellow named Casey
17:58lying on a table.
18:00Struggling for his life.
18:03And I know the last thing he said
18:05just before that knife went into his chest.
18:06He said, go out there, Zephyrs,
18:10and win this one for the big guy.
18:13Pull yourself together, Monk.
18:16And I'll tell you something else, you guys.
18:20From now on, there's going to be a ghost in the dugout.
18:24Number seven.
18:26All number seven.
18:28So just before you go to bat,
18:30I want you to look over to where he used to sit.
18:33Of course, he's going to be there.
18:35He's going to be there in spirit.
18:37And he's going to be yelling for us.
18:39And rooting for us and screaming,
18:41go, Zephyrs, go, go, go!
18:45Hiya, Casey.
18:46And I'll tell you something else about the big guy.
18:49He has got a heart.
18:55Casey!
18:56Casey!
18:56Casey!
18:59All right, all right, quiet down.
19:01Quiet down.
19:03Well?
19:04Tell him, Casey.
19:05Listen, Mr. McGarry.
19:06You got a heart.
19:17Look at his smile.
19:18That's the one thing I couldn't get him to do.
19:20Yeah.
19:21It's wonderful.
19:23Just wonderful.
19:24I feel like togetherness.
19:26All right, let's get out there.
19:38There you are, seven.
19:40Go suit up.
19:47Togetherness.
19:48And I'll go.
19:50Go!
19:51Go!
19:52Go!
19:52Go!
19:52Go!
19:52Go!
19:53Go!
19:57Go!
20:11Go!
20:11Go!
20:12Go!
20:43All right.
20:56All right, I'll listen.
20:58I'm a reasonable man. I'll listen to anything.
21:00As you well know, Doctor.
21:02But maybe you can tell me how one minute he can look like three Bobfellas
21:06and the next like a tanker with nothing.
21:10Or maybe you can explain, Casey, how you can pitch nine balls
21:13and allow four singles, two doubles, two triples, and a home run.
21:17Shall I tell him, Casey?
21:19Well, somebody tell me.
21:21Casey's got a heart.
21:23All right, so Casey's got a heart.
21:25The thing is, Mr. McGarry, I just couldn't strike those poor fellas out.
21:30I didn't have it in me to do that, to hurt their feelings.
21:34I felt compassion.
21:36That's it. He's got compassion.
21:38See how he smiles.
21:40Give a man a heart, Mr. McGarry,
21:42particularly someone like Casey,
21:43who hasn't been around long enough to understand competitiveness or drive or ego.
21:48That's what happens.
21:51I'm sorry, Mr. McGarry.
21:53I just can't hurt fellas' careers.
21:56Dr. Stillman thinks I should go into social work.
21:59That's right.
22:00I want to help people.
22:07Bye.
22:07Well, I know somebody you can help for a start.
22:17Me.
22:19Perhaps you'd like to keep Casey's blueprints.
22:23A little memento might cheer you up.
22:27Bye.
22:28Bye.
22:37Once upon a time,
23:00there was a Major League Baseball team called the Hoboken Zephyrs,
23:03who, during the last year of their existence,
23:05wound up in last place,
23:06and shortly thereafter, wound up in oblivion.
23:09There's a rumor, unsubstantiated, of course,
23:11that a manager named McGarry
23:12took them to the West Coast
23:14and wound up with several pennants
23:16in a couple of world championships.
23:18This team had a pitching staff that made history.
23:21Of course, none of them smiled very much,
23:23but it happens to be a fact
23:24that they pitched like nothing human.
23:27And if you're interested as to where these gentlemen came from,
23:29you might check under B for Baseball
23:31in the Twilight Zone.
