00:00Hello, my name is Latifah Al Maktoum and I'm making this video because it could
00:11be the last video I make. Princess Latifah is one of the many children of
00:20Sheikh Mohammed, the ruler of Dubai. He has a history of being a very repressive
00:28individual and he has this incredibly retrograde view of women in his family.
00:35Women should be sequestered, sheltered, have no independent life whatsoever.
00:42Latifah was a spunky, intrepid young woman and she wanted a life outside of Dubai and
00:48so she schemed with a couple of friends to escape by boat and they got as far as
00:55the coast of India. When commandos came in, seized her and her friends and
01:00brought her back to Dubai and she disappeared. We had no idea if she was
01:04dead or alive for eight or nine months. If you are watching this video, it's not
01:09such a good thing. Either I'm dead or I'm in a very, very, very bad situation.
01:14Suddenly, there are pictures in the paper of Mary Robinson having lunch with
01:19Princess Latifah. I got a call from Haya Al Hussein. We were friendly in the sense that
01:28we were working together for the Global Humanitarian Forum. Princess Haya, at that
01:34stage, was married to Sheikh Mohammed. She told me that she needed to solve a
01:40problem of Princess Latifah. So I said, well, I could come and spend a night.
01:52Haya introduced Mary. Never said that she was the former UN head of human rights. Never.
01:58If I knew that, of course, like, I would have said everything. But, um, no, she never told me that.
02:05Photographs were taken privately to prove life. They were never to be released to the public.
02:13Well, now Robinson is speaking out in a radio interview in which she says that the princess
02:18is deeply troubled and that the princess regrets the video she made talking about her planned escape.
02:24This is a troubled young woman. She's receiving psychiatric care.
02:28I gave a very poor interview. I used the word troubled, which I probably, you know, I shouldn't have on air.
02:38To accept this utter concoction that she's in the loving care of her family, when she had no evidence of that
02:45other than what Princess Haya told her, was a big lapse of judgment.
02:49She got a phone call from a friend and she responded too quickly and without taking advice.
03:04I was completely misled, but it was a very big mistake.
03:10Now it seems actually that Latifah's plight ended up waking up Princess Haya to how awful Sheikh Mohammed was.
03:22She ended up seeking a divorce and custody and there was an ugly legal battle in the UK.
03:27She rang me as soon as she got to London to say she'd escaped. I haven't been in recent touch with her.
03:34I feel, to say the least of it, that our friendship is no longer in existence.
