Trump on order to move nuclear submarines: We had to do that

US President Donald Trump on Aug 1 said he ordered the movement of two nuclear submarines to "protect people" in response to statements made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev over the past few days on US 10-day ultimatum for Russia to end the war in Ukraine. 00:07U.S. President Donald Trump explained to the media his decision to order nuclear

00:11submarines to be positioned in response to Russia's comments.

00:15Oh yeah, well we had to do that. We just have to be careful. And a threat was made and we didn't

00:22think it was appropriate, so I have to be very careful. So I do that on the basis of safety

00:27for our people. A threat was made by a former president of Russia and we're going to protect

00:34our people.

00:35Trump did not specify what he meant by nuclear submarines, in view that submarines may be

00:41nuclear powered or armed with nuclear missiles. Trump and Russia's Security Council Deputy Chairman

00:47Dmitry Medvedev, who is a former Russian president, have traded taunts after the U.S. On July

00:5329th said Russia had 10 days to agree to a cease-fire in Ukraine or be hit with tariffs,

01:00along with its oil buyers. The 10-day ultimatum was shortened from an initial 50-day deadline

01:05for Russia to end the war in Ukraine, after the U.S. was frustrated with Russia's actions

01:11over the deadlock in cease-fire talks.

01:14On July 29th, Medvedev said the U.S. should remember that Russia was not Israel or Iran when

01:21it was playing with the ultimatum game with Russia. He said each new ultimatum by Trump

01:26is a threat and a step towards war, not between Russia and Ukraine, but with Trump's own country.

01:33Two days later, Medvedev said Trump's statement that Russia and U.S. did almost no business and

01:39Medvedev should watch his words showed that Russia should continue on its policy course.

01:45Medvedev said Trump should remember that Russia possessed nuclear strike capabilities of last

01:50resort. Trump responded that Medvedev's provocative statements prompted him to order two nuclear

01:57submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, in case the statements are more than

02:02just that. Analysts called Trump's move a rhetorical escalation with Moscow, but not necessarily

02:08a military one.
