On the morning of 30 July 2025, Vietnamese‑American pilot Anh‑Thu Nguyen, aged 44, tragically lost her life when her single‑engine aeroplane crashed just minutes after take‑off from Indy South Greenwood Airport in Greenwood, Indiana. She was the sole occupant of the Lancair IV‑P and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nguyen had only recently embarked on her second attempt at a solo circumnavigation of the globe, having departed Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on 27 July, with Greenwood as her first stop and Pennsylvania next on the itinerary.
In a video posted shortly before departure, she said:
“I’m super excited today. I’ve just completed the first leg of my solo flight around the world… This is more than a flight, okay? It’s a mission to inspire the next generation of Asian women in aviation, aerospace engineering and STEM.”
She concluded: “Wish me luck. Thank you and see you in Pennsylvania.”
