Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Laura Reid, the Deputy Features Editor at the Yorkshire Post, and here's a look at what's
00:05coming up in the week ahead. A national two-minute silence will be held on August 15th to commemorate
00:13the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. VJ Day marked victory over Imperial Japan, which signalled the
00:20end of the Second World War. Events were held in May to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day,
00:26which marked the end of the Second World War in Europe, but thousands of British and Commonwealth
00:31military personnel continued to fight Japanese forces in Asia and the Pacific for a further
00:36three months. In Halifax, Bankfield Museum and Ackroyd Park will hold a VJ Day 1940s Family Fund
00:43event on Saturday, with military displays and re-enactors, as well as live music, swing dance
00:48workshops, a fashion show and assault course. Today, Monday, the Yorkshire Air Museum is celebrating
00:55its 40th birthday, and highlights there will include a flying display by three vintage aircraft,
01:00including one that flew over the museum on its first day open to the public back in 1985. There
01:07will also be vintage cars from the 1980s and a new display telling the story of the museum,
01:12which stands on the site of RAF Elvington, a Second World War heavy bomber base.
01:18Meanwhile, this Thursday, students across England will find out their A-level results. Many will be
01:24continuing into higher education with university degrees. Some will be taking gap years, starting
01:30volunteering or entering the world of work with jobs or apprenticeships. The University Admissions
01:37Service said the number of offers made to prospective undergraduate students from universities
01:42and colleges had reached a record high this year. And finally, this Friday also marks the 75th
01:50birthday of the Princess Royal. Last month, the first ever official UK coin to honour Anne, the only
01:56daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was unveiled in
02:01celebration of her birthday and her remarkable lifetime of service. The Princess carried out nearly 400
02:08official engagements in 2024, the most of any member of the Royal Family.
