00:00The European Commission has found the Chinese e-commerce platform Timu has fallen foul of its laws on stopping the sale of illegal products.
00:08The Commission says the platform does not properly assess the risks of illegal products it sells on its website, including baby toys and small electronics.
00:16The rules fall under the Commission's Digital Services Act, or the DSA.
00:20The DSA is one of our tools to protect consumers across Europe.
00:23To protect them from what when it comes to online marketplaces?
00:26Illegal products that are sold online, algorithmic content that is thrown at you and that you don't even determine if you want to see it or not.
00:36When it comes to, for example, advertisement or gamification of certain systems on these online platforms.
00:43These are risks that we need to mitigate to protect our consumers online.
00:48So far, the Commission has opened proceedings against 10 online platforms.
00:52There are ongoing procedures against Chinese platform TikTok on how it manages the addictive design of its videos and potentially harmful content for users.
01:01Further investigations have been opened against X over whether it complies with obligations on the dissemination and amplification of illegal content.
01:09Meta platforms Instagram and Facebook are also under the microscope over how well they protect minors as well as their commitment to election integrity.
01:17Adult sites such as Pornhub are being examined on what safeguards they use to protect minors.
01:21The Commission has already found platform AliExpress in breach of its laws.
01:25What is at stake? I would put it very simple. It's the safety of consumers.
01:30Because when consumers buy something online, they expect it to be safe.
01:34According to consumer organizations, the challenge now is how best to enforce laws set out by the DSA in practice.
02:04The legislation has been in place for nearly a year and a half and so far none of the Commission's probes have concluded and no sanctions have yet been imposed.
