00:00Do you think we could pull off a slo-mo shot?
00:04Slo-mo's my middle name, let's go baby!
00:07Chef Michael Van Dielsen and food educator Ganesh Raj are back.
00:12Well, well, well, it's the scene of the crime.
00:16Taking over Kiwi kitchens.
00:18Oh! My second!
00:21Boosting nutrition with banging recipes.
00:24He loves it!
00:27That was good!
00:28Through highs.
00:29Magic has been made.
00:31Nailed it!
00:32And lows.
00:33I won't eat that.
00:34That did not work out.
00:36While saving hard-earned cash.
00:38How much do you think we can save this family?
00:4010k.
00:41Whoa!
00:43We delve into what's in our food.
00:45Can you please give me the skinny on skins?
00:47And give the public their say.
00:49I can't taste that much, to be honest.
00:52To show us we can all...
00:53I love my job. It shows.
00:55Eat well for less.
00:57Ganesh!
00:58Tossie wants something to eat!
01:02In this episode...
01:03Don't wanna cook?
01:04Nah.
01:05The takeaways have taken over.
01:07Don't be silly.
01:08And mum's the one left picking up the slack.
01:11What I want for us to cook healthy food.
01:14With a desperate need for change.
01:16I feel that Vinnie is eating himself to death.
01:19Mike and Ganesh give it everything they've got to kickstart the transformation.
01:24Taste.
01:25From their cooking.
01:26It's the best.
01:27Yeah!
01:28Take that!
01:29Take that!
01:30Will the guys get everyone in the kitchen?
01:33Man, this is beautiful.
01:34Singing the same song.
01:36Can't believe it.
01:37You two get cooked a curry.
01:39Smash that!
01:41Nuitama….
01:42Thank you so much for joining us.
01:43I'm here for our staff.
01:44I'm here for staff.
01:46In Ōtara, Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland, lived the Nūtama whānau.
02:04Whakalofalaiatū ke Matolosi, my name is Vinny Nūtama, I'm Whunuiwean, born and raised
02:12Ōtara.
02:13Vinny met his wife Seppa in a story of modern love, online on Bebo.
02:22That's showing our age right now.
02:25It was everlasting love on a discontinued app.
02:2913 years later, here we are.
02:32Seppa is a dedicated youth worker in Ōtara, and Vinny is an alternative education teacher
02:39at a local college.
02:40See you later.
02:42The couple are heavily involved in their church, where Vinny is also a worship pastor.
02:47They both work long hours giving back to their community.
02:51Vinny is well aware that his father passed away four years younger than Vinny is now, and
03:03he's highly motivated to change.
03:05Within the past five years, I've lost about 50 plus kgs.
03:10I'm actually pre-diabetic at the moment, so I'm borderline diabetes.
03:17Yeah, we need, like, extra help in that area.
03:22It's a reality check.
03:23Like, if I'm looking at my husband's eyes, I think if I knew how to cook just simple healthy
03:33meals, I believe my husband wouldn't be where he is.
03:35Because that's really hurting home for me right now.
03:40Yeah.
03:41But there is someone in the house trying to make more nutritious meals.
03:47Vinny's mum Tosse.
03:49Sometimes I try to cook healthy, especially lots of veggies.
03:55Tosse is also mum to 17-year-old Vita.
03:59In this area, fast food joints outnumber fresh food outlets by approximately ten to one.
04:29And both Vinny and Seppa buy lunch every day, not only for themselves, but also for the
04:34rangatahi, or youth, they mentor.
04:36Sometimes she's messaging me,
04:39Hon, can you send me $30 for lunch?
04:42Some kids might want some food too.
04:44Let us pray.
04:46Father Galway, thank you.
04:47I think what we want to learn from Mike and Ganesh is just how to be more wise in spending
04:53and in cooking.
04:54Also be a positive role model for my brother, Vita.
04:57Yeah, more time together in the kitchen rather than the drive-through.
05:02I'm ready for change.
05:03No more takeaways.
05:05Let's go.
05:07Bye.
05:08To help get the new tamas on a healthier, tastier track, Chef Michael Vandielsen and food educator
05:15Ganesh Raj, the biggest hearts in food TV, have landed in Otara.
05:19You ready for this?
05:24Always ready.
05:25He wasn't ready, because Ganesh is laser focused on the mission ahead.
05:32Starting with observing the new tamas shopping habits from a distance, to get an honest look
05:37at what's going in their trolley every week.
05:39We have the new tamas family.
05:41Mm.
05:42Let's have a look.
05:43Let the investigation begin.
05:45Vegetable section, I wonder what they'll get.
05:49Good place to start.
05:50Now, let's skip this whole part.
05:52They're going straight past it.
05:54No, they're not.
05:55They're getting you some salmon.
05:57Why get that when we can have fish and chips?
05:59She's got to be joking.
06:00Is she joking?
06:01I don't think.
06:02Want some chicken nuggets?
06:03Chicken nuggets.
06:04Three packs of already processed chicken.
06:05Is it chicken?
06:06Ah.
06:07This is for my charming.
06:08First real dish we've heard.
06:09First real food we've seen.
06:10Ah, yes, my feed.
06:11Oh, bro.
06:12Don't do it, bro.
06:13Here we go.
06:14Yes.
06:15I'm scared for them.
06:16Noodle.
06:17Noodles.
06:18Noodle.
06:19That's your favorite noodles, you and Rita.
06:20Oh, no, not the noodles.
06:21That's one packet.
06:22There's plenty.
06:23Well, hang on, that's two.
06:24Michael.
06:25Noodle, noodles, noodles, noodles, noodles.
06:28We've got the food.
06:29We've got the food we've heard.
06:30We've heard.
06:31We've heard.
06:32First real food we've seen.
06:33Ah, yes, my feed.
06:34Oh, bro.
06:35Don't do it, bro.
06:36There we go.
06:37Yes.
06:38I'm scared for them.
06:39Noodles.
06:40Noodles.
06:41Yeah.
06:42That's your favorite noodles.
06:43You and Rita.
06:44noodles noodles four packets oh look we need that secret burger sauce you love that day
06:54can i get these no say no good honor oh yes is this what happens with these guys i mean
07:01see if it's trying to say no but you know rubber arm look we've seen enough we can't help this
07:06family don't let ganesh's delightfully offbeat humor fool you do we guys bring them yep they
07:14live for this hi hey hey how are you today how's it going so what is this your weekly shop pretty
07:24much a week yeah those noodles are vita's breakfast lunch and dinner my little brother there is a lot
07:30of deep fried not very healthy and there's more look at those guys tony eh look at this guy tony
07:38he's making cash yeah he's making cash of all of you he only eats salads hey no just joking
07:46i've got some potatoes yeah that's the vegetable okay so potatoes potatoes is the vibe anything green
07:51does that enter the vibe oh we do have a piece of wait a minute there's mum's stir fry oh mom you're
07:58keeping the good stuff i always want them to eat healthy that's why you called us that's it that's
08:05right nobody calls us for fun all right let's go home let's have a closer look okay i'm feeling i
08:14guess a little disappointed that i thought that that was good food wasn't expecting to be caught out
08:21like that happy that they're they're here to come and help us it's time to pick apart what's going on
08:31with the newtama's weekly food intake what does it feel like to see all the food laid out like this
08:42there's a lot it looks very yum but at the same time it looks very confronting there's so much
08:49processed food there is so much salt to me this doesn't look like food to me this looks like i've
08:56fallen into a really bad place with food and it's the sheer lack of vegetables that are on the table
09:03that's another major concern this looks like chicken says it's chicken it's only 51 chicken
09:13we've got to go through some numbers with you so your total spend at the supermarket today was 395
09:20dollars but wait there's more we have 360 in eating out every week but wait there's even more your total
09:30takeaway spend per week is 770 dollars so your total combined spend is 1525 per week you run that out
09:41over a year at 79 304 dollars wow a lot that's shocking i can't believe it now the minimum amount
09:51that a family of your size age and location needs for your dietary requirements is 416 per week 416
10:03sounds better that's right what happened to whole food in the family i guess the line between real food
10:10and processed food it was a bit of a blur do the two of you love her cooking yes we love it absolutely
10:17we love mom's cooking yeah i think it's time that we start helping out in the kitchen for me the reason
10:23why i'm not in the kitchen is because i don't know how to cook so i'm keen to learn and to learn from mom
10:29and and the team i love the word team you're gonna have to be one if you're gonna go anywhere with this
10:35i'm actually pre-diabetic at the moment you know this has been a wake-up call we got to move forward
10:41and start making some positive changes around here well done that's why we're here we're here to help
10:46you are we in we are in okay let's go let's go let's go go bro well done this is a great start
10:55and i do look forward to the changes that we will make
10:59we're reading yes you know what i feel tell me it's really sad tell me i feel that vinnie is eating
11:16himself to death tosy is taking all the pressure right now the heart's in the right place we have
11:21to get her out of that kitchen and get the younger generation into the kitchen and so we have to teach
11:26them a what fresh food is and then simple recipes yep fast recipes at work and have lots of flavor
11:33how much are we going to save them i'm gonna go 30 i'm gonna go thirty thousand dollars i'm gonna go
11:3925 because that'll be a lot in itself i want you to win we can do it man 30k that'll be amazing
11:46coming up swap week gets off to a rocky start i don't like it and mike delivers a sweet and sour dream
11:57and there might be some left over for tomorrow
12:08let's go takeaways have taken over in the newtama household for themselves as well as the kids they
12:14mentor sometimes she's messaging me and can you send me 30 dollars for lunch like 30 dollars yeah
12:22some kids might want some food too but they're ready for change no more takeaways so vinnie and
12:29sepper can save for a home of their own it's time to to leave the nest
12:33swap week has kicked off in otara tamaki makaurau auckland
12:41the eat well for less team have transformed the kitchen with many of the newtama's go-tos gone
12:50not my sausages and my pies processed packaged foods are off the menu
12:55oh teagle takeouts is crossed off oh man what are we gonna do because those are our quick fixes
13:05and many of the snacks and sweets are out too oh my gosh oh wow goodbye to cookie time
13:14goodbye to chocolate sorry vita goodbye to the noodles that is breakfast lunch and dinner i'm
13:20disappointed oh that's gonna be hard here's to a better lifestyle vinnie i know the road ahead will
13:27be challenging very challenging but if we do it together it will be possible i'm ready to face what's
13:34coming yeah let the challenge begin we're starting with baby steps vinnie's favorite energy drink i wake up
13:47i have a energy drink before i go to sleep i have an energy drink we've replaced his drinks with a
13:52healthy smoothie made with whole foods that will give sustained energy the smoothie has a dose of fruit
13:58and veg cheers natural greek yogurt for protein calcium and probiotics and lsa a mixture of ground linseed
14:07sunflower seeds and almonds sepper and vinnie are ready for change but how much change it's very fruity
14:17yeah it's a bit tangy i don't like it i like it it's sour and i like sour it doesn't have enough
14:23sugar in it do i still have to drink it this swap is less about saving money and more about introducing
14:31new ideas and flavors oh you can have mine then thank you fingers crossed
14:36my this family do not know how to cook how are you going to teach them the baby steps i'll have to
14:51start from the beginning i'll have to start by showing them how to cut a vegetable
14:58hi good thank you welcome thank you thank you thank you
15:02mike has devised a delicious recipe he hopes will spark vinnie and sepper's love of cooking
15:10look at this isn't this lovely cooking in your kitchen together not too nervous i'm a bit nervous
15:17no need for the nerves vinnie mike has just the answer arguably one of the most famous takeaways ever
15:24crispy sweet and sour pork sounds yum it is delicious let's do it i'm ready so the first thing we need
15:30to do is actually get the pork into the oven this will feed using the tip of a sharp knife make a
15:35series of shallow cuts across the skin of the pork belly sprinkle over some salt and rub into the skin
15:42along with a touch of oil so we just massage all that salt into it pop it into a tray this technique
15:48helps create a crispy puffy crackling easy peasy first job done then roast the pork belly skin side up
15:54at 200 degrees for around 30 to 45 minutes so now we need to start prepping the veggies start by
16:01slicing three peppers in half this is actually my first time cutting a capsicum that's great how's
16:06that perfect then cut each into smaller pieces yours looks like mine vinnie doesn't it look at that cut
16:13two carrots into small chunks and finely dice an onion that's it that's it perfect top job you cut your
16:19first onion these are tears of joy heat a cast iron pan with oil and gently fry the veggies give that
16:28a minute then add a quarter of a fresh pineapple peeled and sliced into chunks perfect add one small
16:34knob of ginger three cloves of garlic and one can of whole peeled tomatoes cook for a further minute
16:40before adding four tablespoons of cider vinegar three tablespoons of brown sugar a pinch of salt
16:46and bring it all back to a simmer let that come up to the boil smells good smells great smells like a
16:53healthy lifestyle you can't talk too much we haven't tried it yet does it look vinnie and super in the
17:02kitchen cooking what does that feel like feel good so happy to see them cooking healthy food and when we
17:09leave you've got to be in charge of making sure they keep cooking okay i'm gonna be strong
17:17okay so now we're gonna thicken it up mix together a teaspoon of corn flour and a half a cup of water
17:22then stir through look at that looks amazing crispy cut the pork into quarters then into thick chunks
17:32look at that doesn't it look delicious add to the sauce and it's good to go
17:39what do you think mum and tavita will think of it i reckon they'll love it they'll want this over
17:43takeaways any day beta would think this is from the takeaways i hope you guys are hungry feast your
17:53eyes did you cook that of course of course garnish with chopped coriander and spring onions then
18:03serve with singapore noodles and a couple of noodles at only five dollars 96 per serve could this
18:09flavor packed crowd pleaser with a healthy twist be the start of something beautiful
18:22beautiful the pork worked out well it's good and those pieces are just hitting the spot what do you
18:30think vita amazing and there might be some left over for tomorrow no for tonight
18:39would this meal become part of your weekly meal plan yes because i love it can you believe it
18:50well done how do you feel i feel proud that i get to make my family a feed
18:56i feel like i'm getting emotional us cooking together and just seeing mommy with the smiles on
19:01their faces yeah i'm so happy this is the first meal i taste from their cooking it's the best yeah
19:11you guys take that that's a win take that y'all we're on the road nice work michael top job
19:17yes smashed it they loved it it was great i tell you a swap week continues like this this week's gonna
19:28be a huge success epic
19:33coming up swap week has its ups is this gonna go on our weekly meal plan of course straight up i
19:40don't wanna check one more then and downs i wouldn't swap these
19:57in the new tama household cooking fell on tosti's shoulders come and help me cut the edges
20:03because of vinnie and sepper's limited cooking knowledge i gotta shoot off
20:07rinse it so to give mum a break in the kitchen and replace the takeaways the new tamas are determined
20:13to make positive changes for their health we're ready
20:20in otara tamaki makaurau auckland the new tama whanau's week of transformation is well underway
20:27go and make you some breakfast vinnie and sepper skip breakfast and then by the time it's lunch time
20:33oh boy meaning they'll spend money on fast food during the day but ganesh has plans to change that
20:41oh ganesh's easy veggie eggy breakfast muffins oh wow using simple whole food ingredients
20:49these muffins have protein and vegetables that will help the new tamas feel full until lunch time
20:54mmm i like eggs i like salt and i like cheese ready to cook together let's go
21:03first things first first grease a muffin tray with olive oil and finely chop a quarter of a cup of
21:08spring onions how do you think i'm doing doing great doing an amazing job distribute a cup of frozen
21:16vegetables and the spring onions to the tray well done oh yeah onto the eggs oh last time i cracked the egg
21:24while the shells went in this makes progress we just keep going crack eight eggs into a quarter
21:29of a cup of milk just to put it in there add half a teaspoon each of garlic powder paprika salt and black
21:36pepper and then we give it a whisk whisk looks great want to have a try have a taste after you
21:44here comes the tricky part pour the egg mixture into the tray and add a handful of grated cheese
21:52on top masterpiece bake at 180 degrees for about 20 minutes or until they're lightly golden that was
22:00easy eh that was so easy hard and fast hi guy oh and we made it all ourselves looks delicious
22:18that is good delicious delicious so yummy do you like the spring onions yes yeah i chopped them up
22:26is that true it's true it's true it's true they're buying something similar at the bakery for six
22:33dollars fifty ganesh's muffins work out to be two dollars fifty each this one tastes better than
22:39the one in the bakery is this gonna go on our weekly meal plan of course straight up yeah i'm gonna
22:45check one more then hi my love like most people vinnie is partial to a sweet treat guess what oh what's
22:59up i don't know if you'll like this we're not totally mean so in the spirit of gradual change
23:04we've swapped vinnie's favorite cookie for a smaller option
23:08where's the rest of the cookie it's about the portion true there and it's also slightly cheaper
23:16they look good hopefully this will be another step in the right direction
23:21put light on the chocolate i don't like it well i like it yeah i like it because the portion is small
23:28stop trying to sell it to me i am trying to sell it to you to be really honest no i wouldn't swap these
23:34and i continue to eat it so you must like it we got there in the end maybe if they do choose
23:44to swap it'll be a saving of two dollars 39 but if it helps with eating smaller portions it's an
23:50automatic win biffing a bicky every now and then will help vinnie manage his ongoing health
23:58being pre-diabetic means he has an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes
24:03a disease that occurs when your blood sugar is too high
24:10ganesh is visiting nutritionist amanda bryan to get some solid expert advice on what foods we can
24:16all eat to help prevent or manage diabetes so amanda when i'm out there people are always asking me
24:22ganesh i have diabetes what should i eat hey i'm not surprised by that there are a lot of people in
24:28new zealand living with diabetes roughly around 300 000 people but also there's an estimated further
24:34100 000 people that are living with pre-diabetes or at risk of diabetes that is not good news but give us
24:42the good news food is obviously what we love so ideally we want to be sticking to those whole foods
24:49if we look at our plate and we try and set it up by having a line down the middle and on one half
24:55we're featuring the really colorful stuff colorful vegetables the high in fiber they are less likely
25:01to increase blood glucose levels a key part in the prevention or management of diabetes
25:07is limiting the amount of glucose or sugar consumed but also carbohydrate foods so in one quarter of our
25:15plate we're gonna have some carbohydrates so that's things like our rice our pasta our bread but also
25:23some vegetables are higher in carbohydrates like potatoes kumara even corn is quite high in carbohydrates
25:30our last quarter there is our protein quarter so we can have our animal sources like our beef here
25:36our chicken our eggs and we can have our plant sources like our legumes tofu as well
25:42beautiful and we have some breakfast options here i know smoothies are really convenient on the go
25:48model for people but that is something that we really need to be mindful of with diabetes because
25:53if we think about it if we're blending food that's doing some of the digestion for our bodies and it can
25:59actually make the glucose more absorbable so again if we follow that plate model and we're having
26:05vegetables using that as the base of our smoothie a bit of protein here we can use our dairy products like
26:12milk or yogurt and then we could also use carbohydrate we could use some oats and to sweeten it we could
26:20just use a little bit of fruit and another consideration are our seeds so our healthy fats and so it's about
26:27having foods in combination that is going to help slow the digestive process and lessen that peak of blood sugar
26:34coming up do we know what we're doing no vinnie and sepper attempt a hearty staple
26:44i'm feeling stressed yeah and you ready i was born ready ganesh pushes them to the next level
26:51pretty nervous don't be afraid the curry level got smaller from my room back there
27:04we're in otara tamaki makaurau auckland where the new tamas are heading to the end of their
27:12eat well transformation to save money on takeaways and shifting the cooking from tosi
27:19hi my love hey what's for dinner after a massive day of work in church ministry vinnie and sepper
27:26often fall into the convenience of takeaways morning hun hello but they do have a little time in the
27:34morning so mike has devised a hearty and deliciously simple recipe that they can get going in the
27:39morning before they leave for work and we got this bad boy here slow cooker leaving the slow cooker to
27:46do the hard work mike's slow cooked silverside with green potatoes sounds nice
27:52let's go add one and a half kilograms of corn silverside and cover with water
28:02add two bay leaves two tablespoons of brown sugar one tablespoon of malt vinegar and one high five
28:11that's us then sit on low for seven to nine hours or high for five to six hours add one more high five
28:19get ready for work have a great day my love you too
28:24by the time they get home the silverside is tender and the water is full of savory flavor
28:31smells good it's ready to be used for a simple homemade sauce that includes one of mike's favorite
28:36ingredients dijon mustard and this is going to be for our amazing sauce
28:42for the sauce bring two cups of the braising liquid to a low heat
28:49dissolve a tablespoon of corn flour with two tablespoons of water and combine with a tablespoon
28:54of the dijon mustard well then check in with each other do we know what we're doing no feeling
29:02i'm feeling stressed yeah hopefully enthusiasm overcomes the nerves that looks good great job
29:08for the green potato mash roughly chop four large agria potatoes
29:16cover with water and bring to the boil then let simmer until tender
29:22mash in two tablespoons of butter and season to taste
29:28then fold in two finely sliced spring onions and one cup of defrosted peas
29:32that's all veggies yeah so you're a chef all along chef's my middle name
29:43slice the silver side and it's ready wow and at only six dollars 46 per serve if it makes it to the
29:52weekly meal plan it'll be a long-term money saver nice yeah and way healthier than takeaways made by yours truly
30:00oh wow wow dig in guys dig in thank you very much vincent
30:11very nice mashed potatoes spot on so yummy so delicious hey so nice is this going to be part of
30:24our weekly meal plan of our weekly meal plan of course vincent yes yeah can't wait to have this more
30:31often yes definitely going on the plan is enough said so happy
30:40burgers are a favorite takeaway for the new tamas and they also regularly buy burger sauce
30:45so we wanted to give the great new zealand public their say on what makes the best tasting burger
30:52sauce to do that we've popped in to meet the good folks at communities feeding communities
30:57who offer emergency food support for people in need
31:02we're putting five well-known brands to a taste test
31:07what makes a good burger sauce is the pickley taste it's something that's thick and creamy not too oily
31:12to tell you the truth i've never eaten a burger sauce in my life so this will be a first for me
31:19first up is a kiwi classic
31:24to me this tastes like a takeaway sauce nice thick creamy salty it's not too oily it's got a lot of
31:32pickles in it which i love and it's very creamy it's the first burger sauce i've ever tasted it's the
31:37best one so far yeah that's a good start but how does the cheapest option compare
31:45to me it's not as nice as the other one well i really like my pickles and it's not yeah no it's
31:50not pickley too spicy not a fan the next brand is twice the price of the previous so will that mean
31:56double the flavor to me this was much more bland i just don't think it's something i put on my burger
32:03it's probably my third least favorite out of three days maybe the supermarket owned brand can lift
32:10the game now this one looks like burger sauce yeah definitely more creamy quite a bit of flavor
32:18doesn't feel oily no i think that's my favorite so far and finally can the most expensive brand steal
32:25the win or it doesn't taste or feel like burger sauce yeah really vinegary yeah definitely more
32:33watery it's just quite bland isn't it so which burger sauce do our good sorts think is the best
32:40and the winner is
32:41the top spot goes to the middle price range brand watty's burger sauce classic i suppose it shows
32:55that the most expensive product is not always the best product so it's good to shop around
32:59back at the newtumas the guys have something big planned you're up next ganesh i am yeah but when
33:12you think about it by this time of the week they should be a bit more up skilled yeah they should
33:16but are they skilled enough for what i've got in store for them good luck sir you ready i was born ready
33:24let's go good ganesh wants to build vinnie and sepper's kitchen skills have you made a curry before no
33:33but change is hard and this is a massive step up for any home cook today i want to share a dish with
33:39you guys that my grandmother and my mother used to cook ganesh's tamil style chicken coconut curry with
33:46writer cool i love curry let's get into it you guys ready we're reading first up vinnie's making
33:55the marinade go vinnie from scratch pretty nervous don't be afraid don't be afraid add one teaspoon
34:03of garam masala garam masala is a combination of between eight to twelve spices that indians always
34:10have on our shelf and it's great for a marinade it works really quickly add one teaspoon of turmeric
34:16powder and one tablespoon of yogurt cut 500 grams of chicken thighs into bite-sized pieces
34:24and add a teaspoon of salt and stir through while vinnie's focused on that sepper's going to make
34:29the curry paste and it becomes the base of all the flavor for when that bad boy goes in hungry already
34:36and to make your life easier we're going to use this nifty machine add three garlic cloves and then peel it off
34:42peel a decent sized piece of ginger peel and quarter one large onion and chuck the whole thing in add two
34:51teaspoons of curry powder one teaspoon each of cumin and coriander powder don't get too crazy and half a
35:01teaspoon of chili powder if you like heat and then of course we have our good friend garam masala garam masala
35:06it's like the base flavor one teaspoon of garam pour in two tablespoons of water to help it all bind together
35:17mmm spicy mini can test this on the spoon and see what's not yet not yet don't freak him out so early
35:25i'm kidding to make your life even easier i want to give you this little gizmo oh wow yeah thank you
35:33thank you thank you very much well this is a new member to our family hey and lo and behold you've
35:40made a paste marinated chicken check spice base check here's the next part we're going to put some
35:48oil in the pan and we're going to fry aromatics heat sunflower oil in a large pan over a medium heat
35:57and one teaspoon of mustard seeds see how it's popping yeah releasing flavor oh it's like popcorn
36:03add six to eight curry leaves then add the curry paste all right this is good so we're going to spend
36:11a little bit of time five minutes or so i love curry i hear you make a very good curry i already know
36:20this one's going to be better and you know the good thing is you're not cooking it gently add the
36:27marinated chicken and fry for five minutes until slightly browned marriage made in heaven pour in
36:33a can of tomatoes and cook a further five minutes until the sauce thickens man this is beautiful
36:39add one cup of coconut milk and an optional quarter cup of fresh cream for richness
36:45then some salt to taste this will take 10 to 15 minutes of a simmer finally the cucumber writer
36:52which is a side dish often served alongside spicy meals to help cool your palate
36:57grate half a cucumber just a little bit of salt in there half a cup of our yogurt cumin from before
37:05just a little hint this looks amazing to make life easier on you we're going to use frozen vegetables
37:12just mix it through for me vinnie mix it through for me chicken curry is dancing with the vegetables
37:18what he said at only five dollars 38 per serving let's hope it makes it onto their growing list of

38:28and they don't even notice them right it's as if they never had a problem with veggies they're just
38:33we're eating them all right it's the end of swap week and time to find out if the new tummers are
38:47ready to ditch the takeaways for a healthier and cheaper meal plan and to find out who won the savings
38:54bet i'm gonna go 30 000 i'm gonna go 25 i want you to win
38:59today we're asking a lot it is a lot but you know what they have to change for their health
39:10how are you guys feeling after this whole week i'm feeling amazing we're feeling great and happy
39:17my confidence in the kitchen has grown rapidly for me best part was having my husband by my side and
39:24going through the steps together i am so proud of them thank you vincent for doing this yeah so this
39:33week you have eaten a huge amount of different types of foods that you wouldn't normally have tell
39:39me about the dishes that you had what we start with crispy sweet and sour pork that was delicious
39:46beautiful we had a good time cooking that one mum was super happy so yummy compared to the takeaways
39:54how do you feel about them now we're not going to get that anymore that's for sure what about the
39:59veggie eggy breakfast muffins they were very delicious and easy to make do you like the spring
40:05onions yes yeah what's great is there were vegetables in there that's that and then we
40:12slide things down with the the silver side oh i love it it really tastes beautiful mashed potatoes
40:20spot on i really enjoyed the green mash i've never had mash with the peas inside it and of course
40:26finally the chicken curry in honesty that was my favorite dish was the curry yeah i loved it for
40:33myself just seeing it all unfold it's a dish that i could continually make man this is beautiful so
40:40shall we see if we've saved you some money yes let's do it yeah who loves cookies what did you think of
40:49the cookies that you had i didn't like it it just didn't taste the same but here's what you've got
40:56two benefits the first one is a saving of almost two dollars forty cents for the same quantity of your
41:06big one but here's the best part you had less cookies and so this was about you still having your treat
41:13but portion control but what do you say is this a swap yes it's a swap we won hold him to that
41:23eh yes i will now vinnie usually in the morning when you get up what is the little can of stuff that
41:30you drink don't say the word and this time you were given another drink to try what was it it was
41:35a smoothie i didn't really like it but i know that there's other other ways or other ingredients that
41:43you can add into it which will make it extra nice okay well it was a beautiful smoothie made with all
41:51homegrown ingredients you can see carrots bananas milk spinach spinach a little bit of yogurt it costs
41:59a dollar 66 more but let's talk about health would you swap this out pay a little bit more for the
42:08sake of health yes yes keeper fresh food so do you remember you're spending 79 304 dollars per year
42:20with all the swaps that you would take and the ones that you wouldn't you get a saving of about five
42:25bucks a week then there was a whole bunch of stuff that was processed and unnecessary and some of it we
42:33didn't even know what it was right so that's about 215 dollars worth of stuff that we're going to get
42:38rid of now we're not meanies so eating out was quite a big figure so we've halved that figure that's
42:45down to 180 dollars a week however your takeaways was out of control so we've taken 620 dollars out of
42:53what you're spending which leaves you still 150 a week to spend on takeaways so if you do all of
42:59these things do the swaps cut the dining out in half take away that money from the takeaways you'll save
43:07per week 1020 just over 53 000 a year in savings yeah yeah i think it was just out of hand
43:20that amount of money on takeaways a week is disgusting but i'm i'm happy with how we are now
43:27and our future it's a new page you've turned it it's a new book we'll be able to use it towards our
43:37rangatahi that we take out we can use it towards our house that we're going to be saving for why don't
43:44you get vita in because we got to talk to everybody as a family vita come on welcome welcome to the
43:51table so are we going to commit as a family together to save 53 000 dollars yes we are you are yes be
44:03responsible for each other all right when you see those fast food places you just keep on driving
44:09can we do it yes we can all right high five down high five good job yeah
44:21well done ganesh what a win that felt great that was some big savings huh yeah wasn't it
44:27all right to see you're right thank you very much perfect can we get you anything else yes
