00:05We are learning that the first tsunami waves have already been detected in parts of Russia and also Japan.
00:10Now, this is the strongest quake on the planet since 2011,
00:14when a 9.0 magnitude tremor hit northeast Japan and triggered a devastating tsunami.
00:21CNN's Ivan Watson is live for us now in Hong Kong.
00:24Ivan, what can you tell us?
00:25Well, Abby, it's been about three and a half hours since this massive earthquake struck
00:31off the eastern coast of Russia's Kamchatka region.
00:36And as you pointed out, 8.8 magnitude, one of the most powerful earthquakes ever.
00:42And it has sent a chain of tsunami warnings and advisories across and around the Pacific.
00:50The Russian regions of Kamchatka and the Sakhalin Islands, there have been orders to evacuate.
00:57The first wave has believed to have hit parts of Kamchatka at a height of around three to four meters,
01:06though so far officials there say the damage is minimal.
01:10But there are also warnings and advisories going out to Tokyo, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan and U.S. territories
01:18like the island of Guam and the Mariana Islands and Hawaii and, of course, the west coast of the U.S. as well.
01:26We have reports of an initial wave that hit parts of Japan only about 30 centimeters high.
01:32But the authorities there aren't taking any chances.
01:35They're ordering evacuations for people to go to higher ground.
01:38And then the warnings of the estimated arrival time of possible tsunamis to areas like Alaska
01:46and the west coast of the U.S., the mainland, that is still several hours away.
01:52But the advisories are in effect right now.
01:56So authorities are taking this very, very seriously.
01:58Abby.
01:59As they should.
02:00It could be potentially a very dangerous situation.
02:03Ivan Watson, please keep us posted as this unfolds throughout the night.
02:06Thank you very much for that report.

02:14triggering tsunami alerts for Japan and Alaska, Hawaii and the U.S. west coast.
02:21CNN's Ivan Watson joins me from Hong Kong.
02:24Ivan, we've seen the images of the waves impacting a town on Russia's far east coast.
02:29But initial waves in Japan, thankfully, are lower than expected.
02:33But where do things stand right now and what is expected from here?
02:39Right.
02:39Well, everybody's watching this very closely and taking it very seriously.
02:43The initial impact from this earthquake just about four hours ago exactly,
02:48you had some buildings damaged in this sparsely populated region of eastern Russia,
02:54the Kamchatka region.
02:54And then we see images in social media of flooding, of tsunamis coming in and impacting coastal areas there.
03:03Japan has issued some evacuations and ordered residents to go to seek higher ground in some regions.
03:12And the initial estimates of a tsunami were they arrived as less than expected, only about a foot high wave.
03:20But there aren't taking any chances.
03:21In 2011, there was a 9.1 magnitude earthquake that killed more than 22,000 people in Japan
03:29due to the tsunami and the ensuing nuclear Fukushima reactor disaster.
03:34The entire Pacific Rim, there are tsunami warnings from Indonesia to the Philippines to Ecuador and Chile
03:42and, of course, to the U.S. territories of Guam, Hawaii, where there are some evacuation orders,
03:49and then Alaska and northern California and Oregon and Washington.
03:54There, we are estimating that the arrival time of possible tsunamis are still at least an hour away.
04:01But this is something that authorities are taking very, very seriously.
