Former England captain Faye White speaks on the Lionesses' 2025 legacy and Alessia Russo's Ballon d'Or chances
Transcript
00:00The longer it went on, the more I thought, I think we're going to get it. We've just had so much
00:10fortune. You need slices of luck and we've had it in abundance, this tournament, and it's just
00:15quite incredible to how much. But equally then you've had moments where the players have stepped
00:19up and delivered. I thought, yeah, we can do this. I keep believing. And yeah, it's just great that
00:24it's something that us English have experienced. That legacy for me would be that it is just
00:29football. It's not the women's game anymore. It's just football. And not always have this
00:34separation and compare it. Yes, it still has to catch up as far as the sponsorship, the amount of
00:40money it generates, the fan base. But it started from a very different standing point from what
00:46the men's game has for so many decades. You just hope that it's continued resources and
00:52continued infrastructure and more clubs leading the way and putting their money where their mouth is
00:57and supporting the women's teams. Alessia Russo has had an amazing season
01:01winning the Euros and the Champions League. Could she be a Ballon d'Or contender?
01:06Yeah, I think so. And important goals, but also just the work rate and leading that line.
01:11Without question, it's those players that are playing at the top of their level and deliver.
01:15And I think she should be definitely up there as a couple of other English players. But
01:20obviously for Matty is still, I think, very, very special.
01:26Leah Williamson has now listed two European Championships. How important has her leadership?
01:30Yeah, massive. Again, Leah is so impressive. Just the way she carries herself and the way she speaks
01:37and eloquently kind of just talks. And I literally stare at the screen when I see her at a press conference
01:43and just like, oh, you're amazing. And to be able to handle all that and all the different things that
01:49being a captain throws at her. I mean, she's the queen of Europe, isn't she? She just loves lifting
01:54European trophies. I didn't think they were, it was ever in doubt because she's lifted it last time.
01:59And then obviously Champions League and now the Euros again. It's incredible.
