00:00Let me take you back to a time when the icy winds swept across the North Atlantic, and
00:05a remarkable bird ruled the wild waves, the great ock.
00:09Imagine a creature, nearly 30 inches tall, draped in sleek black and white feathers,
00:13gliding through the frigid waters with the grace of a seal.
00:17Its powerful beak and webbed feet made it the undisputed champion of diving, feasting
00:22on fish and crustaceans beneath the rolling surface.
00:26They nested on remote, rocky islands, far-flung places like Iceland, Greenland, Scotland, Norway,
00:33even Newfoundland, and long ago as far south as northern Spain.
00:37The great ock was a creature of the cold, thriving in dense colonies, each pair laying just one
00:43precious egg a year, right on the bare rock.
00:46For thousands of years these birds had little to fear, to the Inuit and other indigenous peoples.
00:52The great ock was more than food, it was a gift.
00:55Its down warmed their skin, its sturdy bones fashioned into tools, its spirit woven into
01:00their traditions.
01:02Their hunting was careful, respectful, never taking more than needed.
01:06But then everything changed.
01:08European explorers began to cross the Atlantic.
01:11Sailors, awed by the strange penguin of the North, found the great ock's inability to fly,
01:17made it helpless on land.
01:18They came in droves, clubbing the birds by the thousands for meat, oil, and especially
01:23for their soft feathers.
01:25And those eggs, beautiful, speckled the size of a man's hand, became trophies, snatched
01:31from nests and displayed in the parlours of Europe.
01:34By the 1700s the colonies thinned.
01:38British, French, Scandinavian collectors scoured the last remote islands.
01:43The great ock's world grew smaller and no one seemed to notice or care that their greed
01:48was draining the life from an entire species.
01:51In 1775 the British Parliament made a gesture banning the killing of great ocks for feathers
01:56in Iceland.
01:57But the law was weak and the demand only grew stronger.
02:01The last survivors retreated to lonely outcrops off Iceland, battered by storms.
02:06And then, on a sombre June day in 1844, a trio of fishermen landed on Eldie Island.
02:12Hired by a merchant who wanted museum specimens, they found a single pair of great orcs guarding
02:18their egg.
02:19The men strangled the birds, and the last egg was crushed under a heavy boot.
02:23Just like that, on a windswept rock, the last chapter of the great orc was written.
02:28Today there are no more great orcs.
02:32Their voices are silenced, gone from the cliffs that once rang with their calls.
02:37In museums around the world more than 80 stuffed bodies and 75 eggs sit behind glass, mute reminders
02:43of what we lost.
02:45And on Eldie Island stands a stone statue, a lonely sentinel watching over the waves.
02:50The great ock's story is not just about a bird's extinction, it's a mirror held up to
02:54our own choices, to our greed, our ignorance, and the sorrow that comes too late.
03:00The great orc is a symbol, a warning.
03:03Its ghost lingers as we face new waves of climate change, habitat loss, and the silent vanishing
03:08of life all around us.
03:10So I ask you, will you hear the silence before it's too late this time?
