00:00DEBUNKING FALSE CLAIMS ABOUT SUNCREAM
00:07Summer is officially here, which means that many Europeans will be swapping their computers
00:11and desk chairs for beachside sun loungers.
00:15Although sun cream is an essential summer product to avoid burned skin, every summer
00:19posts claiming that sun cream is in fact dangerous spread across social media.
00:25Some online users claim that sunscreens are dangerous because they contain ingredients
00:30like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are hormone disruptors.
00:35Oxybenzone, octinosate and these are sunscreen filters, they're known as chemical filters
00:40where the UV rays are absorbed by these filters so it reduces the amount going into the skin.
00:45I know for a fact sunscreens are safe because I know even if there's a slight issue with a filter
00:50it's been blown out of context in some situations.
00:53Sunscreen has been around since the 1930s, set up by L'Oreal and whatever filters that we have
00:58in that time frame is massively changed. And that's based on research, based on new data coming out.
01:03And really a lot of these sunscreens, if you look at the big brands, those filters,
01:08so oxybenzone, otherwise known as benzophenone 3, octinosate, they're not there anymore.
01:13Some online users have alleged that the commercialization of sun cream from the 1930s onwards
01:19is behind rising skin cancer cases. This graph shows an alleged correlation between the introduction
01:25of sun creams containing certain ingredients with rising skin cancer rates in the state of Connecticut
01:32in the US. However, the Connecticut Public Health Office told you to verify that although the data
01:37likely comes from the state's tumour registry, the text boxes linking rising rates to sun cream products
01:44had been added in afterwards and were not from their data.
01:47There is no data that sunscreen causes skin cancer. That is not true at all.
