00:12Hey, people. I'm Danielle, and this is my story.
00:15Please like and subscribe.
00:16Growing up, I thought my mom was the coolest.
00:19Dad was always traveling for work, and we'd never gotten close.
00:23But I loved being with mom because she was so unpredictable and fun.
00:27She didn't fuss over balanced meals or strict routines, and bedtime was always flexible,
00:32depending on how far our living room fort was coming along or if we hadn't finished our movie.
00:36She was all about letting me explore and being creative without caring about a messy house or dirty clothes.
00:43It's like she crafted her parenting style from a child's wish list, and it was awesome.
00:48A child needs some discipline. We don't want people thinking she's being raised by wolves.
00:52I don't think a lot about what other people are thinking, and a child needs to enjoy their childhood.
00:57You only get it once.
00:59But nothing topped the birthday party she threw me when I turned 10.
01:02She turned our backyard into a carnival with swings, food stalls, bouncy castles, and a petting zoo.
01:08The whole neighborhood was invited, and everyone was having a blast.
01:12Tildings turned a bit chaotic.
01:14We suddenly had goats headbutting kids, llamas chasing neighbors down the street,
01:18and alpacas uprooting everyone's lawns.
01:21And to make things 10 times worse, Dad turned up early to find the house looking like a tornado had swept through.
01:26It didn't help that we also got a massive fine from the city council for unauthorized livestock.
01:32Dad was beyond furious, and after a huge fight, he told Mom he'd had enough and wanted a divorce.
01:38He moved out the next day, and soon after the divorce was finalized, we found out he got remarried.
01:43Mom didn't take all these changes well and got really depressed.
01:47Dad sent some money for child support, but it wasn't much, and we suddenly found ourselves going from barely well off to, well, kind of poor.
01:55It used to be so much more fun to share lunch with you when you had takeout pizza or pasta.
01:59Your homemade meals are awful.
02:01I know.
02:02How can you eat this every day?
02:03If you can make your mom happy by letting her think her food is good, it's easy to eat her awful lunches.
02:08In more ways than one, I found myself being the adult around the house while Mom was in her downward spiral.
02:14She was a high school dropout, so she wasn't qualified for many jobs.
02:18And if she got any, she never lasted too long.
02:21Mom, I understand the customer was being rude to you, but you shouldn't have hit him in the eye with fried chicken.
02:26He deserved it.
02:27Otherwise, you know I'm not a violent person.
02:29You got fired from the shoe store last month because you had an argument with the manager and threw a stiletto at him.
02:35As Mom drifted in and out of jobs and moods, I was taking care of things around the house and even managing the finances.
02:42By 8th grade, I'd started doing small jobs for the neighbors to earn some extra cash.
02:46But when I was in the 9th grade, Mom got a job as a singing telegram.
02:51Yep, she got paid to dress up in the wackiest costumes, from a tap-dancing banana to a rapping dinosaur, and deliver messages in song.
02:59Happy birthday, dear Max.
03:01It's time to wear your party hat, even though you're getting older.
03:05At least you're not as old as that.
03:07Betty, you give me diabetes, cause you're so sweet.
03:11Say yes to marry me, and I'll kiss your feet.
03:14They weren't always happy messages, though.
03:17Don't worry, Mike.
03:18You're not about to die.
03:20But you are getting fired.
03:23So pack your things and say bye.
03:25For the first time, Mom seemed to be doing something she enjoyed, and I was happy for her.
03:30One evening, she was going to a fast food restaurant to deliver a birthday message, and she asked me to come along so we could eat there later.
03:37I watched in amusement as she sang and danced.
03:40But just then, I heard loud laughter at the table behind me.
03:43It was a bunch of popular girls from my class, with their queen bee, Mila.
03:47And they were laughing at Mom.
03:50Gosh, how pathetic would you have to be to take up a job that has you acting like an idiot in public?
03:56It made me really angry, but I couldn't help feeling embarrassed, too.
04:00I didn't want to be seen by them with Mom.
04:02I slid under the table, crawled towards the fire exit, and escaped.
04:05And waited in the car till Mom came, saying she'd been looking for me everywhere.
04:08But I just pretended I wasn't feeling well, and wanted to go home.
04:12And when Career Day came around, and everyone was asked to bring in their parents,
04:16I made sure Mom just never got the notice for it.
04:19So imagine my shock when Mom walked into the classroom, dressed up as a giant cupcake.
04:24And when she introduced herself as my mom, I wished a sinkhole would open up.
04:29How come you didn't tell me about Career Day?
04:31I found the notice under your bed while cleaning.
04:33I forgot.
04:34You looked uncomfortable with me being there.
04:36Well, you know what kids are like, Mom.
04:39They can be mean.
04:40If you were planning to come, you could have said you'd do something else.
04:43Why?
04:44I know some moms who came are lawyers and doctors, and their jobs are really important to them.
04:49But I also like mine, and it pays the bills.
04:51That's all a job is supposed to do.
04:53I don't define my worth by it.
04:55I was almost annoyed with Mom for choosing this moment to sound so wise and mature.
05:00Why couldn't she understand that high school kids were judgmental and wouldn't let me live it down?
05:05Which, of course, they didn't.
05:07Wow, you got the lowest grade in the math test.
05:10If you keep up like this, you'll end up failing high school and become a singing telegram, too.
05:15You're signing up for dance club?
05:17Danielle, if you dance anything like your mom, don't even bother.
05:21One day, I was walking into class when I tripped on a school bag and face-planted to the floor.
05:26Oh, wow, girl.
05:27You're just as embarrassing as your mom.
05:30I'd had it.
05:31I was about to pounce on her when the door suddenly opened, and the teacher walked in with the most gorgeous boy I'd ever laid eyes on.
05:38He introduced himself as Antonio, and everybody swooned over the mysterious exchange student.
05:44Antonio!
05:45You can sit here.
05:46She pushed her minion right out of the chair next to her, then smiled at him innocently.
05:51But to my shock, the teacher insisted Antonio sit with me.
05:55As he walked over, he ran his fingers through his blonde hair, and his bright blue eyes mesmerized me as he gave me a smile.
06:02Oh, was I kidding?
06:03He'd never be interested in me.
06:05So, I just got on with the day and watched the really pretty girls fall over themselves to talk to him, which was so embarrassing.
06:13Hey, Antonio, please zip up my lab coat.
06:16Oh, silly me.
06:17It has no zip.
06:18Can I touch your hair?
06:19Just for one second.
06:20It's for science.
06:22To my surprise, Antonio walked past all the other girls at lunch and asked if he could sit with me.
06:27And he actually seemed interested in talking to me.
06:30Back home, I don't have any friends.
06:32Really?
06:33You look like the sword who would have loads.
06:35It's hard to trust people.
06:36It seems like most of them want to be friends for all the wrong reasons.
06:39Even here, I don't know how many of these people actually care to know the real me.
06:43You seem different, though.
06:44Oh, I blushed and got so nervous that I spilled my milkshake all over myself.
06:49Rather than laughing, he coolly handed me a napkin.
06:52When our hands touched, we both pulled away nervously.
06:54So, tell me about the real you.
06:57He talked about how much he missed his country and his family.
07:00We're really close, so it's hard to be away.
07:02How about your family?
07:03Oh, well, it's just me and my mom.
07:05We're pretty close.
07:06What does your mom do?
07:07Uh, she... she's a singer.
07:09Oh, really?
07:10What kind of singer?
07:11Come on, think fast.
07:12A jazz singer.
07:13Really sophisticated and cool, you know?
07:15Antonio was super amazed by that.
07:18But then, I suddenly realized he would discover the truth soon enough.
07:21So, I lied to mom.
07:23I've joined a club before and after school, and the timings won't suit you, so no need
07:28to drive me over and pick me up.
07:29I'll take the bus.
07:30I had to go to a cafe to kill time.
07:32Before and after school.
07:34But it was worth it.
07:35Antonio and I were getting closer.
07:37Want me to come around tonight to study?
07:39Where I'm staying, I don't get much privacy.
07:40My mom's rehearsing with her cool and sophisticated jazz band.
07:44What about the library?
07:45We hit the books in the library one afternoon, where something weird happened.
07:49These two men in suits sat right near us and kept glancing at Antonio.
07:53They were both reading, but one of them had his book upside down.
07:57I don't want to worry you, but those men keep looking at you.
08:00Are you sure?
08:01Maybe they're looking at you, because, you know, you're so pretty.
08:04It's still creepy, of course.
08:05We can get out of here and go to the mall.
08:07I have to buy a few things.
08:08It wasn't a few things.
08:10Antonio was spending an obscene amount of money.
08:13What?
08:13These are presents for my family.
08:14I get an allowance, you know?
08:16Suddenly, this guy appeared out of nowhere, took Antonio's wallet, and bolted like a cheetah.
08:21But just then, the same two men from the library popped up, chased the thief down, and tackled
08:26him to the ground.
08:27Those are the men from the library.
08:28They're after us.
08:29Run, Antonio, run!
08:31It's okay.
08:31I know them.
08:32I will explain everything.
08:33Antonio took me to the exchange house where he was staying, which turned out to be a
08:37freaking mansion, with staff who bowed to him.
08:40I must confess something.
08:41In my country, I'm a prince.
08:43My parents are king and queen, and those men are my bodyguards.
08:46Yeah, and I'm the Empress of Egypt.
08:48Cleopatra, nice to meet you.
08:50It's true.
08:51I'm really not making this up.
08:52It really felt like he wasn't joking around, and my mouth dropped open in shock.
08:57I'm sorry.
08:58I lied.
08:58I just wanted to experience life without the royal spotlight for a bit.
09:02I was going to tell you the truth eventually, but I was enjoying my time with you so much,
09:06just being a regular guy.
09:07I didn't want to ruin it, because, well, I kind of like you.
09:11Wow!
09:11A prince has feelings for me!
09:13I kind of like you too.
09:15Antonio smiled brightly.
09:17It was like a fairy tale.
09:18Now that you know the truth, my parents are coming for a visit tomorrow, and we're having
09:21a banquet.
09:22I'd love for you to come.
09:23You and your mom.
09:24I couldn't invite mom, not after the lies I told about her.
09:27She went on a world tour today.
09:29She's in Japan right now.
09:30Oh, that's a shame.
09:31I really wanted to meet her.
09:33The next night, as I got ready for Antonio's party, mom peeked into my room.
09:37Hey, honey.
09:37I have to work tonight.
09:39Are you going out?
09:39Uh, yes.
09:40I'm hanging out with some friends.
09:42I'm happy to hear that.
09:43But lately, I feel like we hardly spend any time together.
09:47Any chance you want to tag along to work?
09:49We can do something fun afterwards.
09:51I told you already, mom.
09:52Hanging out with friends.
09:53Mom looked a bit sad as she nodded and left, and I felt kind of bad.
09:57But my mind soon shifted back to Antonio's party.
10:00I wanted to look my absolute best for it.
10:02The party was amazing, and everyone there looked super glamorous.
10:07Antonio introduced me to his parents, who were both lovely.
10:10Everything was going well when suddenly, Antonio grabbed my hand.
10:14I have a surprise for you.
10:15The lights darkened, and the stage lights lit up.
10:17Then, to my absolute horror, mom walked on stage dressed as a queen with a fake crown
10:22and velvet robes.
10:24I closed my eyes as tightly as I could, hoping I could teleport to another planet.
10:28But, spoiler alert, it didn't work.
10:30I found the cutest way to send a message.
10:32It's called a singing telegram.
10:34Ever heard of it?
10:35This message is for you.
10:36Then, my mother started to sing an opera about love.
10:39Everyone cheered her on, but I wasn't even listening.
10:42I was hoping she couldn't even see me from the stage.
10:44But then, she got off and started walking into the crowd towards me.
10:48As she got closer, her voice cracked, and she stopped singing mid-sentence.
10:52Danielle?
10:53You know her?
10:53I guess.
10:54A little.
10:55Yeah.
10:55She's...
10:56She's my mom.
10:57I thought your mom was a jazz singer in Japan on a world tour.
11:00I looked at mom as realization of what was happening dawned on her face.
11:04I'd never seen her look so sad and disappointed.
11:07Then, she just turned and ran out.
11:09I'm sorry.
11:10I have to go.
11:11I ran after her as fast as I could, but she'd already left, so I took a cab home.
11:15When I got there, she had already changed out of costume.
11:18Mom, I'm sorry.
11:19You are that embarrassed of me that you pretended I was in another country?
11:24I know.
11:24It was awful, and I...
11:26That was my last job as a singing telegram.
11:29It's over.
11:29Mom, you don't have to...
11:31Save it, Danielle.
11:32You got what you wanted.
11:33A normal mom.
11:34I'll never embarrass you again.
11:36She wasn't the only one angry at me.
11:38Antonio was ignoring me in school the next few days, too.
11:41And eventually, I had to climb the rope right behind him in gym class to get him to talk to me.
11:45What are you doing?
11:46I just wanted to apologize about that little mix-up.
11:49Little mix-up?
11:50You lied to me.
11:52Uh, hello, Mr. I'm-a-secret-prince?
11:54Lying about that is different.
11:56And I told you the truth eventually.
11:58I liked you because I thought you were genuine, unlike the others.
12:01But I was clearly wrong.
12:02His words hit me so hard that I fell off the rope.
12:05Ouch.
12:06I know I shouldn't have cared what people thought of my mom.
12:08A part of me just wanted to have a stable parent with a normal job.
12:12But what was so bad about the one who didn't?
12:14Growing up, I'd loved that she wasn't like other parents.
12:17Mom had just picked up a waitressing job at her friend's cafe,
12:20and I decided to dress up and apologize to her publicly as a singing telegram.
12:25But when I got there, I found her in a cat fight with her friend.
12:28Why won't you believe me?
12:29Why would I lie about my daughter dating a prince?
12:31If he's a prince, he could literally date anyone.
12:34Why Danielle?
12:35You're saying my daughter isn't good enough for a prince?
12:38What's wrong with my Danielle?
12:39She's pretty and smart and the picture of grace.
12:42I couldn't help smiling.
12:44She really was one of a kind.
12:46Mom, I've been a jerk.
12:47We both know it's true.
12:50I'm really sorry that I made you feel blue.
12:54You deserve the best day and night.
12:57Please quit this job.
12:59Let's make it right.
13:01As Mom and I went smiling outside, I pulled her into a hug.
13:05You always let me do whatever I wanted.
13:07I'm sorry I wasn't as supportive.
13:09I know I haven't been the ideal parent at times.
13:12You're the parent I want.
13:13Let's go eat something, shall we?
13:15Any chance your prince boyfriend would join us?
13:17He's not my boyfriend.
13:19You aren't supposed to go around announcing he's a prince.
13:21I don't think anyone believed me anyway.
13:23Yeah, that's true.
13:25And I guess we'll have to see if he'll give me another chance.
13:28Either way, tonight I'd rather just hang out with you, Mom.
13:30It's been a while.
13:31It's been a while.
13:45It's been a while.
