00:00Hi, my name is Ashley, and I live next to the worst family on Earth.
00:05They're the biggest snobs ever.
00:07They drive around in the fanciest cars and clothes and look down on everyone else.
00:12And they have a son named Jack, who's an absolute troll.
00:17But before I continue, please like and subscribe.
00:19If you do, you might see a shooting star tonight.
00:22When I was six, I was playing with my favorite doll,
00:25and Jack ran up to me, snatched it out of my hands, and threw it into the street.
00:30A car ran over it and smashed it into pieces.
00:33Another day at school, Jack stole a bunch of cookies out of the cookie jar and blamed it on me.
00:39Ashley took the cookies.
00:41No, I didn't.
00:42She hid them in her desk.
00:44The teacher opened my desk and found a cookie inside.
00:47I got in huge trouble, and after school,
00:50I saw Jack on the playground stuffing his face with the stolen cookies.
00:54When Jack wasn't terrorizing me,
00:57his parents were trying to get my family kicked out of the neighborhood.
01:00Our house was the smallest on the block,
01:02and even I had to admit, it was a really ugly green.
01:06And my parents were a little weird sometimes.
01:09My dad loved to sunbathe on the front lawn.
01:12And every morning, my mom made this strange sound
01:15to call all the stray cats in the neighborhood to feed them.
01:18She'd also sing to the birds and make birdhouses all day.
01:21Our house looked like a zoo, and the neighbors hated it.
01:25Their yard is unacceptable.
01:27It looks like an overgrown swamp.
01:30Their house gives me a migraine every time I look at it.
01:33Mommy, my eyes hurt.
01:35You have to do something, officer.
01:38And can someone please tell that man to put a shirt on?
01:41Jack's parents threw fancy parties every week,
01:44but me and my family were never invited.
01:46We only lived in the neighborhood because we inherited the house from my grandfather,
01:50who used to be a famous investigative reporter.
01:53I wanted to grow up and be just like my grandfather.
01:56When I was 12, I joined the school newspaper,
01:59and when my teacher's cat, Mr. Whiskers, went missing,
02:02it took me less than two days to find him on the roof of the school auditorium.
02:06Though, I suspected Jack had something to do with it.
02:10In high school, Jack was the richest and most popular kid.
02:13I, on the other hand, only had one friend.
02:16My cousin, Bethany.
02:17Bethany moved into town a week before we started 10th grade.
02:21But Bethany was obsessed with being popular
02:23and would do anything to get Jack and his rich friends to like her.
02:28Jack's friend, Sadie, was the ringleader of the rich kids.
02:31And she made Jack look like a saint.
02:34Bethany adored Sadie.
02:36She'd carry Sadie and her minions' books,
02:38do their homework, and follow them around.
02:40She'd even let them copy her answers during tests.
02:43They'd smile in Bethany's face and laugh at her behind her back.
02:48Why do you let them treat you like that?
02:50They're just joking around.
02:52Those girls aren't your friends, Bethany.
02:54They're jerks.
02:55Bethany never listened.
02:57She wanted to be popular so bad, she couldn't see the truth.
03:01One day, my mother dragged me out of bed at 5 a.m. on a Saturday morning
03:05to volunteer at a soup kitchen.
03:07It's important to give back to those less fortunate.
03:10But do we have to do it so early?
03:13As I was serving food, I looked up to see a familiar face.
03:17Jack?
03:18Ashley?
03:19What are you doing here?
03:20Jack's face turned white and he just ran out of the soup kitchen.
03:24The next day, I saw Jack at school in science class.
03:27The teacher partnered us up for a big project and we met in the library after school.
03:31Why were you getting soup at the soup kitchen?
03:34Did you fall on your head or something?
03:36Why would I ever go to a place like that?
03:38You don't have to lie to me.
03:39I'm not lying.
03:41I'm just trying to help.
03:42No one asked you for help.
03:44The next day, Bethany and I were walking to class and we ran into Jack in the hallway
03:49and Jack gave me the meanest, coldest stare ever.
03:53What's up with you and Jack?
03:54I saw you two whispering in the library.
03:56Are you guys dating?
03:58Is it a secret romance?
03:59Oh, Jack's so cute and so rich.
04:01I'm so mad you didn't tell me.
04:03Jack and I aren't dating.
04:05Then what's going on?
04:07Can you keep a secret?
04:09Of course.
04:10I told Bethany about how I saw Jack at the soup kitchen and his weird behavior afterwards.
04:15But all Bethany cared about was that I had the attention of such a rich, popular boy.
04:20But I had an itch to investigate.
04:22So later that afternoon, I stopped by Jack's house to check things out.
04:26But I heard Jack's parents yelling inside.
04:29I heard someone coming, so I hid in the bushes.
04:31Then the door swung open and Jack rushed out.
04:34He darted down the street before I could say a word.
04:37Jack missed our study session the next day.
04:39Then he started missing all his classes.
04:42I started to worry, so I called and texted him, but he didn't answer.
04:46A few weeks later, I went by his house again.
04:49But when I knocked on the door, a strange woman answered.
04:53There was another family living in Jack's house.
04:56The wheels in my head started spinning.
04:58I started asking around to see if anyone knew what happened to Jack.
05:02Sadie said Jack and his family were vacationing in the south of France.
05:05Or was it the Hamptons or Tahiti?
05:08It was probably all three.
05:09Jack is so lucky.
05:10I wish I was rich.
05:11There was even talk about why he'd moved.
05:13Jack's dad bought a new mansion that's twice the size of the old one.
05:19Twice the size?
05:20He's richer than I thought.
05:22The explanation seemed reasonable, so I let it go.
05:26During summer break, I was heading home one day after running some errands
05:29when I saw a boy in an oversized hoodie playing guitar on the sidewalk.
05:33He played a sad song that was so beautiful, it made my heart sink.
05:37When the song ended, some people dropped money in the can beside him.
05:41I walked over to put in some money too, when a suspicious looking guy crept up and snatched
05:46the boy's can.
05:47Then, the thief ran toward me.
05:50Without thinking, I stuck my foot out and tripped him.
05:53Give that back or I'll turn your face into scrambled eggs.
05:56I took a martial arts stance that I saw in a movie once.
05:59It worked, because the thief dropped the money and ran.
06:03I picked it up and turned to the boy whose hood had come off.
06:06It was Jack.
06:07Jack?
06:08Are you okay?
06:11I'm...
06:11I...
06:11Jack shook his head and broke down into tears.
06:15He told me that his parents broke up, then his dad sold their house, stole his mom's
06:19money and fled the country.
06:21Now Jack and his mom were broke and living in a shelter.
06:25I felt so bad for Jack.
06:27No one deserved that.
06:28Not even a rich jerk like him.
06:30So, I invited Jack and his mother to my parents' house.
06:34Ashley?
06:35Why is this woman in our house?
06:36They're in trouble, Mom.
06:38They need our help.
06:40Jack's mom apologized for the way she treated my parents.
06:43My parents forgave her and invited them to stay in our guest room for as long as they
06:46needed.
06:47Luckily, Bethany was away all summer with her family, so I could keep this secret.
06:52Jack and his mom were so grateful that they helped out as much as they could around the
06:55house.
06:56Jack even tried to help my dad fix a leaky faucet.
06:59That didn't turn out well, but the gesture was sweet.
07:02I tutored Jack to help him catch up on the work he'd missed at school.
07:06It was odd having Jack in my house at first, especially when I saw him walk out of the
07:10shower with a towel around his waist.
07:13A few weeks later, Jack's mom got a job and they moved out.
07:16I hated to admit it, but I missed having him around.
07:19On the last day of summer, Jack sent me a text asking me to meet him.
07:24What's all this?
07:25I wanted to thank you.
07:27It's not much, but it's the best I could do.
07:29Jack opened the basket and pulled out my favorite foods.
07:33Chili dogs and Brussels sprouts.
07:36You and your family are the strangest people I've ever met.
07:39What's that supposed to mean?
07:41It's a good thing.
07:42No one's ever been so kind to me.
07:44And I love how you and your parents live your lives without caring what others think.
07:49It's inspiring.
07:50How do you do it?
07:52I don't know.
07:52It's just how I was raised.
07:55I wish I was as strong as you.
07:57I looked at the biceps bulging out of his shirt.
07:59I think you might have me beat.
08:02School's gonna be so tough.
08:04I'm supposed to be the rich kid with the fancy car and the millionaire parents and...
08:08You're not that guy anymore.
08:10And to be honest, you were a real jerk before.
08:13I like the new you way better.
08:15Since we're being honest, I have to admit something.
08:18What?
08:19I think I have a crush on you.
08:22Really?
08:22And I'm pretty sure you have a crush on me too.
08:26Then Jack pulled me close and kissed me.
08:28We talked for hours that night and he even played me some songs.
08:33I saw Bethany at school the next morning after summer break.
08:36Jack passed us in the hall and he winked at me.
08:38And I couldn't stop smiling.
08:40What was that?
08:41I don't know.
08:42Jack's always been weird.
08:44Then why are you blushing?
08:46I didn't tell Bethany about me and Jack.
08:48We were taking things slow.
08:50One day, Jack and I were walking home from school when Sadie and her rich friends pulled
08:55up in a fancy car.
08:56Hey Jack, where's your ride?
08:58Um, I don't...
09:00You're trading it in for a new one, huh?
09:02Always trying to one-up me, Jack.
09:04We all get it.
09:05You're the richest, but I'm a close second.
09:08Yeah, my new car is gonna be great.
09:11It's twice as expensive as the last one.
09:13Jack, what are you doing?
09:15Ditch that loser and hang out with us.
09:18Plus, we have to decide what color we're gonna wear to the winter dance.
09:21I'm not going to the winter dance with you.
09:24Then who are you going with?
09:26Tell me you're not gonna take that freak instead of me.
09:29If you're referring to this amazing girl standing beside me, then yeah, I am.
09:34Sadie was pissed and drove off.
09:37I appreciate the compliment, but you can't keep lying.
09:40About what?
09:41Your father's not buying you a new car.
09:44I know that.
09:45Then why lie about it?
09:47Why not?
09:48It's not hurting anyone.
09:49The truth always comes out no matter how hard you try to hide it.
09:53Let's talk about something else.
09:54What time should I pick you up for the dance?
09:56I think I'll pass.
09:58I'm allergic to liars.
10:00Jack and I didn't talk after that.
10:01I'd see him at school bragging to his friends about the money he didn't have,
10:06lying about the huge fancy house he just moved into,
10:09and making fun of the poor kids.
10:11He was a rich, self-centered jerk again.
10:14I couldn't believe I fell for this guy.
10:17Jack called and texted me after school,
10:19but I ignored him and binge-watched MSA videos.
10:22What's with the frown?
10:23It'll give you wrinkles.
10:25I don't get why Jack has to lie about being rich.
10:28Some people will do anything to keep up appearances.
10:32Lie, cheat, sometimes even steal.
10:35But it's not right.
10:37Of course it's not right.
10:39Doing the right thing isn't always easy.
10:41I decided to go to the dance alone.
10:43Bethany and I were supposed to go together,
10:45but she wasn't returning my calls.
10:47When I arrived at the dance,
10:49I saw Bethany hanging out with Sadie and her crew,
10:52following them around holding their drinks.
10:55Hey, Bethany.
10:56I've been trying to reach you.
10:58Uh, sorry.
10:59I, uh, I gotta go.
11:01Bethany was acting strange.
11:03She could barely look me in the eye.
11:05Then Jack walked up to me,
11:06and before he could say a word,
11:08everyone's cell phone started going off.
11:11I looked at my phone
11:12and saw a video of Jack's mom working as a maid.
11:15You're not rich, Jack.
11:17You're a poor loser.
11:19Then all of Jack's rich friends laughed at him.
11:22And don't try to deny it.
11:24Bethany told us everything.
11:26She even made this video.
11:28It's true.
11:28Ashley told me that she saw Jack
11:30begging for food at the soup kitchen.
11:32Shut up, Bethany.
11:34No one asked you to speak.
11:35Be a good little puppy and stand over there.
11:38I felt furious at Bethany.
11:41I'm so sorry, Jack.
11:42I never meant-
11:43It's okay.
11:44It's not your fault.
11:45I should have stopped pretending a long time ago.
11:48Sadie, you're right.
11:49I'm poor.
11:50But I don't care what you or anyone else thinks of me.
11:54You've never been my real friends anyway.
11:56All you've ever cared about is my money.
11:58Well, now it's gone and it sucks.
12:00But I found something way more valuable.
12:03Then Jack took my hand.
12:05Oh, jeez.
12:07If you say you've fallen in love with that freak, I'm gonna throw up.
12:11I'd had enough.
12:12I walked over to her and accidentally spilled my drink all over her dress.
12:18Oh, sorry about that.
12:20But you know, the punch does bring out your eyes.
12:23You want to get out of here?
12:24Yes, please.
12:26As Jack and I walked out the door, Bethany ran up to us.
12:30Ashley, it wasn't personal.
12:32We're still friends, right?
12:33Maybe I can fix things with you and Sadie.
12:35If you did her homework for a week, then you're pathetic, Bethany.
12:39And you deserve someone like Sadie.
12:41Jack and I left the party and went to the beach.
12:44We ate chili dogs and Brussels sprouts and danced the night away.
12:48This is nice.
12:49You know what the best part is?
12:51What?
12:51It doesn't cost a thing.
12:54Then Jack gave me the most romantic kiss ever.
