During a speech to the House floor Wednesday, Rep. Ben Cline (R-VA) spoke about his Stop Illegal Entry Act, which increases penalties for illegal border crossings.
Transcript
00:00Mr. Speaker, I rise today in strong support of the Stop Illegal Entry Act.
00:04In recent years, more than 10 million illegal immigrants have crossed into our country,
00:08including hundreds who are on the terrorist watch list.
00:11This is more than a border crisis. It is a serious national security threat.
00:15A failure to enforce our laws created a dangerous incentive.
00:18Cross illegally, break our laws, and you're likely to be released into our communities under past radical policies.
00:24And that had to change.
00:25Even more concerning, over 70% of those charged with illegal re-entry last year had criminal records.
00:31These are not first-time offenders.
00:33These are repeat criminals who have shown complete disregard for our laws.
00:38The Stop Illegal Entry Act will increase penalties and prison time for illegal entry and re-entry,
00:42sending a clear message that there will be consequences.
00:46President Trump ended catch and release.
00:49And with this legislation, House Republicans are continuing that commitment to restoring accountability
00:53and to protecting American families.
00:55It's time to bring back law and order by stopping these illegal crossings.
01:00I urge my colleagues to support this bill and stand for the safety of the American people.
01:04And, Mr. Speaker, I yield back.
