Indian man brutally attacked in South Dublin in suspected hate crime; Local woman recalls horrific scene

A newly arrived Indian Amazon employee was violently assaulted by a group of teenagers in Tallaght, South Dublin.

00:03Late Saturday night in Taller, South Dublin, a disturbing assault took place.

00:07An Indian man was violently attacked by a group of teenagers.

00:10He was rescued by Jennifer Murray, a 42-year-old local woman.

00:15Completely covered in blood from head to toe.

00:17He had two massive wounds on his head, all of his skin, all of his clothes.

00:23There was actually so much blood that we had to cut his coat open to check

00:27that he hadn't been stabbed anywhere else.

00:30The victim is an Indian Amazon employee who had moved to Ireland just a week ago.

00:34Back home, he has a wife and a child.

00:36He was very shocked, very withdrawn, very submissive.

00:42There was no aggression.

00:43He wasn't shouting.

00:44He wasn't crying.

00:46He was completely reserved.

00:51as the one taking the video hurls insults at him.

00:57There was like abuse of comments, being shouting and all, which was just awful.

01:01Just absolutely awful.

01:02Jennifer witnessed the scene from her car.

01:04She later posted a video on Facebook describing the incident.

01:08They stripped him off his trousers, his underwear, his shoes.

01:11They also robbed his phone.

01:13They robbed his money.

01:13And so the whole time he was so apologetic and he was, you know, pulling his coat down.

01:20So I had a blanket in the car belonged to my baby.

01:22So I used that to cover him up.

01:24They rushed him to Tala University Hospital after.

01:26I've never been afraid of any Indian men or South Asian men or anything like that before.

01:34They have been Indian doctors who have saved my life when I was 20 years of age.

01:39The assault is being investigated as a possible hate crime as the group falsely accused the

01:43man of acting inappropriately around children.

01:45So this is, I have been told by the police, something that they do.

01:50They attack these people, they strip them of their clothing and then they take their image

01:54and they put it on social media and they spread this rumour that they were in a place they

01:59shouldn't have been, doing something that they shouldn't have done.

02:01But even before the facts could settle, the narrative online took a darker turn.

02:06Tweets demanding mass deportations, blaming immigrants for rising crime

02:09and even justifying the violence began to gain traction.

02:12There was no evidence, there never is evidence in these cases where these rumours are spread.

02:18You will never see evidence of the supposed crime being committed.

02:23All that is evident is the actual crime which is committed, which was a complete racist attack.

02:29When asked about the rise of the far-right sentiments, Jennifer said,

02:32I do see a rise in people who are very loud about being very negative.

02:36I do see a rise of people who are comfortable in things that maybe weren't ever said out loud

02:43in the previous years, but I do believe that there is a rise in being comfortable with being negative.

02:50It has, you know, effects on society, it has consequences.

02:54And I think it also has attacks like this where truly the teenagers, they have to live with this.
