00:00three families have gone back in time and swapped their 21st century lives for an 1880s homestead
00:13where are my walls so far they've been stripped of modern comforts that's the bathroom what's
00:22a nose pipe before that is not to wipe your butt with no there's only two beds i'm not sharing a
00:31bed me neither you guys are acting like kind of snooty and snotty and they got a taste it's canned
00:38hell of their new reality your success or failure will be judged but frontier living's about to get
00:48a whole lot tougher whatever i brought my family into
00:51it's cold in here freezing freezing cold
01:16i'm so stiff from sleeping in one position all night our three families have survived their
01:24first night on the frontier how'd you sleep horrible there's no white noise no white noise
01:32there is the sound of the stream but it's very faint though it's late july last night the temperature
01:42dropped to 50 degrees fahrenheit it was freezing in here last it was cold and the lopers had only a
01:49tarp for protection i need to wash my face what i'm supposed to do how i wash my face splash
01:58y'all are killing me
02:03haven't done this in a while mom joaquin feels like he has walked back into his past and he's okay
02:12but i'm completely a fish out of water i am missing hot water right now
02:21throughout the night i think i asked myself a hundred times can i really do this
02:26good morning 1880s sleep hey time to get up my we have a long day ahead of us we gotta get the wall
02:35fixed today how long can we endure without a front wall without a front door i am worried
02:43that we're gonna have visitor whether it's to be a bear a coyote a wolf whatever there's no protection
02:50here like none
02:52can we get rid of the chamber pot because it's terrible the longer it sits in here the more it
02:59smells like urine this is delightful for guidance on their new normal
03:06the families turn to the almanac see what it has to say their go-to guide for frontier living
03:16greetings the next few days will be about settling into your new home and the 1880s way of life
03:23your priorities are exactly the same as an 1880s homesteaders arriving on their new plot of land
03:29you need to make sure your cabin is safe and comfortable and the family needs to be fed
03:35there'll be plenty more to get on with later but first we gotta get this wall done
03:41so i feel like our priorities are the outhouse yes we definitely need to work out some privacy
03:49i need to go
03:50try to avoid the outhouse but um i think my time is up
03:59while jason tests out his back to basics bathroom mosquito the hall kids are struggling
04:08with their new sleeping arrangements jet was all on top of me and he does not know the definition
04:14of personal space well you were out in a shrimp position so your butt was like in my space
04:21i'm missing like my queen-size bed it's like bumper cars sharing a bed with my sisters because they want
04:30all the room to themselves i don't think i can manage this this needs to be fixed immediately
04:37sleeping in the same bed all summer ain't gonna cut it dad what are you doing we need another bed plan
04:45our pantries look a little bare the families need to fuel up for a day of manual labor
04:53well i guess our breakfast options are what limited but the supplies they arrived with are not going to
04:59last much longer bread and honey or honey and bread i mean like realistically could we go to the market
05:10here in the 1880s and get that get flour get sugar because i'm gonna need some of that mama what
05:17supermarket do they have here like what did we really walk into where does the rest of our food
05:25come from what is it gonna look like
05:27luckily historian dr jacob frefeld is here with answers on how the families can keep themselves fed
05:38knock knock hi lovers joaquin good to see you again please have a seat oh come on how's the space
05:47treating you um you treated us very cold last night oh got a little chilly did it well stacy i brought
05:54some stuff that i think are going to help you as you push forward wow i get something as a woman in
06:00the 1880s i get something but what's the sum money
06:04and homesteaders would have had money you would have come with your life savings so how much do
06:12you have there okay 10 15 20 and 30 so we have 30 dollars this is our life savings in 1880
06:23all three families have been given the same amount of money we are giving you 30 dollars
06:30one dollar was equal to about 30 dollars in today's money and they'll have to make it last
06:37so 30 dollars would give you a thousand dollars spending power here it is
06:43wow the average weekly expenditure for a family of homesteaders like you is about a dollar 75
06:51a week which is sort of close to right like 60 there are going to be opportunities when you'll
06:56need to spend money and other times when you're going to have the choice so it's really important
07:00to keep an eye on how much money you have because the end you're going to come back to the land
07:03office to prove up your homestead and that's got a fee with it so you want to make sure you've still
07:08got six dollars left to get that final land certificate okay okay but the money's not going to do
07:14much good if you don't have a place to spend it that is true you want to take a look at
07:17ah new grocery and dry goods great reduction in prizes where have you been
07:24in the 1880s the general store was often used as a bank post office social club and even as a
07:36local undertakers but you're going to have access to a general store to buy goods from i mean you
07:42can't grow sugar out here right cinnamon nutmeg like those seasonings that i i would want yeah
07:49your store is about two miles away you can take a walk there later today if you'd like
07:54oh wow thank you i've left you with some stuff to talk about here listen yes you have and thank
08:02you for coming by expect there to be a door the next time i'm here i expect there to be one too
08:07see you soon thank you i gotta give him a round of applause while he leaves like he's the best thing that has happened to me since i've been in the 1880s yes i get to go shopping
08:20he heard your cries he heard my prayers
08:23the money gotta act like this
08:29but no more than 175 stacy yes sir i'm gonna take mama with me mama is very frugal so she can kind of
08:38help me out in that area all right my biggest concern with stacy going to the general store
08:45as as always her spending too much just take like two or four dollars or just three dollars
08:51so i can make sure that i stay within that budget we cannot spend it all in one time stacy okay all right
08:57i get it i get it got it now who's gonna tell the hannah riggs coffee beans 40 cents per pound that's a lot
09:09no actually that's not terrible and do you want to see your daddy smiling
09:13when we go shopping for groceries we don't really have a budget you know we get what we need and we
09:21throw in some wants in there as well we probably eat out three or four times a week but now we have
09:27to plan for every single meal and make sure that we have what we need let's do some grocery shopping
09:32i like to spend money good food means good mood
09:39come on buddy let's go shopping i don't even know if this is a trail i think you nailed it
09:46while half the homesteaders head out for supplies i've never walked to the store before
09:52getting our cardio in the rest have a tougher task last trip to the broken outhouse
09:59let's get this first yeah while joe and ethan build a bathroom p and peace
10:11jeremy and jet tackle the bed here it goes that's nice look at that that was a nice cut
10:19we got our foot boards we got our head boards we got our side rails this is where it gets tricky
10:27our biggest challenge is going to be these joints you can't get that wrong it has to line up perfect
10:32there's a lot of pressure to get the bed made because there's five of us sleeping in two beds
10:36all right so i'd rather do it right take a little longer then do it wrong and have to redo it there
10:42you go and you got to go and do other stuff as well this is a long long process it's going to be a while
10:49okay okay that bed definitely needs to get made i just want to be able to spread my arms and legs
10:57around without playing bumper cars but jeremy has other ideas so the bed did not go on project but the
11:08thing is i really have been wanting a garden like this for a long time each homestead has a kitchen garden
11:15to grow their own produce if i loosen up the dirt in between all the vegetables less chance of the
11:25weeds to kind of grow it's very important job too i'm not sure the kids would agree jeremy
11:36oh i need no electric saw the family with the longest to-do list is the lopers i have to fix this wall
11:44secure this cabin we need a door and we need windows hold your hand down land hold it up or down
11:52down there we go you ain't got to push on it don't push on it yes sir let it go you hold that in
12:07that's why i said hold it up so it wouldn't break yes sir
12:09i grew up working on stuff like this with my uncles with my grandfather teaching me these skills
12:18but i'm here by myself all i have are my boys with me and they've never done something like this
12:23what i always tell you it's not just about working it's doing how to work all right yes sir so hold
12:28that when i'm holding it up don't let it break off working with my dad to build this wall put this door
12:36up it's a little challenging because you know he's always talking about but you don't know how to
12:40work you don't know how to work how do you know i don't know how to work all right what i want you
12:44to do is lift it up i need a flush come on up yes sir
12:53on top of me having to get this done my anxiety is also high because i know my wife when she gets in
12:58the store with money deep breaths joaquin well mom we're almost there what a walk
13:09oh my
13:12this is very exciting
13:18hello ladies good afternoon it's stacy loper hello there i'm trevor trevor
13:24girly milk fur nice to meet you all right please feel free to browse oh thank you
13:32their supermarket for the summer is filled with must-have goods for life on the frontier
13:39mom what is the washboard oh there's the washboard so that's kind of hair products there
13:46and then the pomade ladies sleek the hair down definitely have to keep that in mind
13:51yeah i took the liberty to prepare uh just some necessities all right it's only a dollar 75 but
13:59it'll last you for the whole week peaches pears two cans of corned beef a bag of flour
14:05but that's just your base you could purchase other things as well penny candies
14:10uh if you could no we don't want to splurge today we want my husband to be proud of us
14:20yeah but only a penny a penny for a scoop i recommend the licorice it's
14:26that's what i consider the licorice okay okay we we will we'll take the licorice you got it
14:32i'll have that delivered out to your uh cabin thank you oh max will be happy oh yes yes
14:46gilbert's general store oh that's so cute hello ladies welcome hi oh wow you have a good store here
14:57there's lots of stuff are you looking for any food stock for the week or yes right that's what we
15:03really came for could i recommend the base supplies for the week for you perhaps that'd be good is there
15:09anything else we can add i need potatoes there you go thank you thank you bye so far two of our families
15:20have been cautious with their cash hey come on in welcome hi how's it going we need we need a lot of
15:27groceries that's a dollar 75 for the base okay let's do the coffee sure but one has the urge to splurge
15:37hopefully daddy joe would love the almonds i will perfect ketchup jason is definitely the person that
15:44is more likely to spend more he ends up adding a bunch of random candy or some other products that we
15:49really don't need so hopefully he just doesn't overspend maybe one more salmon maybe with candy corn
15:57i feel like a deck of cards would be a good thing i will do the hard candy as well sure
16:03so your grand total is 283. thank you mr gilbert my pleasure
16:12i wonder if i could have bought a stuffy i did not see any stuffies look at the outhouse
16:18they got it done oh they actually fixed it they're here how was the store um we got a lot of the
16:24basics of flour and cornmeal um we got a bottle of ketchup we got a couple pieces of candy and the deck of
16:33cards and we did get almonds how much did we spend in total 283. two dollars and 83 cents
16:43i was a little surprised about the almonds but jason was thinking of me so i really appreciate that
16:54how much is that one dollar and 76 cents we spent a penny over i'm proud of you and i bought you all
17:04some candy oh wow you i told you to watch her not it doc i want to splurge a little bit for the
17:16grandkids thank you nana you're welcome thank you nana you welcome lady all right we almost have one
17:23side done boys yeah ready one two hey babe yeah mom when we get in that front door baby it'll be first
17:33thing in the morning i do not feel good going in to tonight i need four walls to engulf me and my
17:45family so that i can feel safe and secure the family's first full day on the frontier is drawing to
17:57a close did you finish the bed oh not the bed no no we decided to weed the garden instead
18:08so it looks like we're all sharing a bed tonight i expected the bed to be done pretty quickly
18:14and it's still not done it's a lot harder than it looks to cut out those joins
18:19so i was just gonna do it tomorrow okay all right all right good night sweet dreams
18:31i am missing my bed at home we're both feeling homesick everything is starting to settle in
18:37this house this the living situation it's just all so new it's yeah it's hard with drugs
18:51it's hard with drugs please i can't take that it's already bad enough
19:00one two three
19:20it's cold
19:21all right well guys this is breakfast for today pears peaches and this lovely bread the trip to the
19:34store has helped bolsters supplies it's a good little start i like it thank you but the families
19:41haven't had a hot meal since they got here we need to learn how to use the stove so today's task is
19:49cooking over an 1880s cast iron stove sounds simple enough i'm wishing that i had an air fryer right
19:57about now
20:01i've never made fire before i um yeah i don't cook i don't i don't have to do any of this
20:10all of this is going to be a challenge i feel like i'm playing in the trash
20:14my wife is not used to doing the things that a 1880s wife would normally do and when it comes to
20:21all the cooking the cleaning washing of dishes and clothes and stuff me and the boys normally do that
20:27from a preparation standpoint about three to four hours to have dinner ready so we need to start
20:32dinner at least by noon okay what am i doing here what did i sign up for then it's going out
20:48i don't know what to do next
20:50i don't like doing stuff i'm not good at i'm not good at this this is not what i do
21:04to know that it's depending on me that my family eats hot food it's not fair
21:09what's wrong stacy what am i supposed to do to get it to to come over to the other side you got the
21:22great open i don't know listen you got a good fire going right now you hear it rolling
21:31my mother-in-law is an asset just the wisdom that she brings that knowledge of how she lived
21:43add some more wood the more wood you have the more heart it's going to get so you mean
21:49tell me i got to keep adding to this all day long as often as you need it what yes ma'am
21:55i just have to give them all the information the knowledge that i have and the know-how and just
22:03believe that they'll be able to do it it will get better we'll see she will not be here with us the
22:12entire time when she leaves let's pray and hope that we come out of this alive
22:17so jason what do we think is our potatoes also hoping for their first hot meal the hannah rigs are
22:27planning a vegetable soup i have no idea what a potato looks like if they can find the ingredients
22:35that is my theory is this is potato the potatoes are under the ground
22:41i feel like this is not it i'm pretty sure they're peas joe so i feel like these are weeds
22:51close swiss chard this is cabbage beetroot if i was home i'd just go search on the internet and
23:00see what a potato looks like i didn't anticipate it would be this difficult just to find three
23:05vegetables for dinner tonight the garden it is overwhelming there's a lot of pressure there's a lot
23:09of stress we need to get the boys fed but we don't know what any of this is we have something
23:16it's a potato potato i think these are going to be the most delicious potatoes we've ever had in our
23:22probably not but no
23:30recipe for boiled onions the halls are also searching for a delicious dinner from a selection
23:37of authentic 1880s recipes no boiled onions over bread and lard that's disgusting i was using that
23:45lard for my eyebrow gel i do not want to eat that it says boil 10 minutes pour off this water again add
23:52boiling water boil a few minutes and drain a second time pour in boiling water add salt and boil for one
24:00hour i'm not doing all that let's just make our own recipe because at home i don't use recipes so let's
24:06just boil these for an hour okay i need more water i've done three trips for water we've done a trip to
24:18wash the potatoes a trip to wash the onions a trip to wash the pot it's like 16 trips for one meal we're
24:26not even started uh like that i guess we're doing another trip for water what am i supposed to do
24:37just sit here and look pretty well i guess so that should be easy enough
24:42all right so about three or four more then we'll put the door in
24:58using a recipe to make some potato type stone this is very intimidating i don't do this
25:03it doesn't need to be too thick right mom okay i hope this is what a stone was supposed to look like
25:14what you think i didn't expect you to do as well as you were doing
25:18my mom with you 100 on that one honey
25:25stacy yes baby i got your door on but you but you oh yes what you think i love it joaquin awesome
25:37i can get a kiss or something get off me i gotta go cook
25:50all right four hours later dinner is served
25:55you ready all right i think it's gonna be delicious and harder that way i think so
26:06we have prepared you some boiled onions and some fresh corn
26:11sounds good yeah i definitely want to know how the scones taste y'all
26:15mom this tastes good the food is amazing hands down oh thank you i'm feeling much better than i did
26:30coming into this thing to see my kids say i am enjoying this this tastes really good i was like
26:35yes that is much more fulfilling to me that makes this more purposeful for me out of five stars how many
26:44stars would you give our soup 4.8 4.8 okay well that is really good cheers cheers to potatoes ready
27:00oh god
27:03it's different oh that's terrible tastes sweet we have to boil the onion for two hours geez so is this
27:11what homesteaders ate back then i guess it was in the almanac it wasn't a great fulfilling meal it
27:19wasn't worth the four hours of cooking maybe you should have stuck to the recipe after all you like it
27:30everybody feels a little safer but the job's not done the loafers finally have a wall but the work
27:38is far from over we have to fill up some of these cracks and spaces that allow all the wind and stuff
27:43in at night so we need some help there's a page get the almanac this says homesteading and community
27:51having not seen their neighbors since they arrived it's time to rope in some reinforcements many
27:57homesteads were situated within a larger community who could be called on in the times of needs turning
28:04a difficult or tedious task into a social event community events like this were called bees
28:12they were followed by a community meal or celebration
28:16okay just like we have the gatherings in our in our neighborhood yeah we grow community back at home
28:25and it is just so important to be able to laugh and smile and talk and help somebody else to know
28:31that in the 1880s that's what they believed in was community yeah no i love this becoming a
28:37community means more work done quicker it's not like a win-win situation it does so should we ask them
28:44absolutely all right so this invite is going to go out we're going to slip it up under people's doors
28:52and we just hope for the best you check for spiders yeah all right good night good night
29:12i found something we have a note dear neighbors we are determined to create a comfortable and safe
29:26home in the spirit of the 1880s homesteading community we would like to invite you to help us
29:33in return we will help you finish your cabin the lopers well this is very interesting because i have a busy
29:41day ahead of me i've got a lot of plans so i i don't know how much time i have what if they could
29:46help you with the bed you know the bed is just a time killer it's just i don't really need help you
29:51know i don't need extra dead weight i think that you should help them regardless it's just being good
30:00neighbors i think community is really important i think it's super beneficial to have neighbors looking
30:09out for you the halls are a very tight knitted family and i think sometimes that can be more
30:16downfall hey this might be the little spark that starts a community where we can all work together
30:22so let's see where this takes us
30:26i think it's good karma to help others right and that's what we want to shout that we want to help
30:32people i am a lone ranger i don't have a lot of friends because i do my own thing i've learned all
30:39my life i can never count on people hi mama daddy one of the rings are here hello hey how you doing
30:56it's good to finally see some people yeah good to finally see you as well i was thrilled to get the
31:02invitation from the lopers i wanted to get to know them a lot better the place looks nice and when we
31:07first got here the front wall just some beams we had a open concept outhouse no privacy at all but
31:17we do help our neighbors back home in texas as well and they help us too so it's kind of a normal thing
31:22for us what's your biggest pain point right now so at night we have a mosquitoes company i'll tell
31:27you what we can start at fill out some of these cracks and spaces hey fellas hey jim how are you
31:33how you doing man what you guys up to i think the same thing everybody's up to yeah getting our homestead
31:38in order wow nice what was your situation um we don't have enough beds for our family so i'm in the
31:44process of making a bed oh wow yeah well i wish you'd have been here a few days ago yeah when there was
31:50nothing up here and when i say nothing i mean nothing but some frames really yeah we had no front
31:55wall wow you know what your house is actually better than ours seriously you got smooth boards
32:02i got more gaps than you like my place is nowhere near as good as this like wow i gotta catch up to
32:08you guys like i got a lot of work to do they they're bugging me on the bed and just want life a little
32:13easier you know i'll tell you what what i'm hearing is we all need some help so um if you could spare a
32:18little time with me today and we're more than willing just to cut it off short and come help
32:22you yeah i don't really need help yet right yet okay i am in the middle of something like what i
32:29need is time because if you came over to help me with that bed we would stand around not knowing
32:34what to do and it would be terrible i don't like that i mean come on dude we're more than willing to
32:41to lend a helping hand um but right now we man with my house i just want to get it finished
32:46outside especially filling in some of these spaces yeah but it's these biggest ones okay
32:52all right well let's get to work we should get this done cracking here
32:58jeremy is struggling even if we don't know what to do i believe four more hands are better than two
33:07i don't like asking for help because uh a lot of times people make me feel like i owe them
33:12and i don't want to feel like i owe anybody you don't know the skill set you don't know the asset
33:18that they could be but you don't want to give it an opportunity for them to show you that your choice
33:27i think joaquin and his family and our family we have each other's backs and we'll be there
33:32jeremy hasn't quite built that up so that's on him
33:36right now if i had to choose the one in three that fails i feel like it's
33:42he's most likely to fail i i only have so much time i can help you guys because i got
33:47a family that's going to be bugging me oh let's do it
33:52that irritated me
33:53fresh from building friendships the last thing i have to really do is drill all these holes so we
34:06can weave the rope through jeremy is finally building the bed
34:12you don't want this thing wobbling around you want it straight okay now shake it
34:17wait did we check this straw for like bugs and stuff no that's why we roll around on it so they'll die
34:28okay yeah it's just not gonna work
34:34this is not a woman's job in the 1880s but it's my job
34:38right yeah finish the mattress let's try it out let's go you're missing half of it
34:52the bed stinks we're gonna wake up smelling like hay we already stink
34:57maybe you stink now the moment of truth
35:00oh i like it it's squishy thanks good job i'm proud of you good man daddy up too
35:10well there it is the bed is done we can check that off our list thank you dad
35:15when we go to sleep at night we can go say that we're gonna hit the hay
35:23tie those ends together babe get it snug
35:26the building b may have failed to bring everyone together but maybe a potluck will do the trick
35:33we're very very determined individuals everything looks so good we have the grit to make it through
35:40anything but this frontier living is not something that you want to do on your own
