00:32There had been no inkling that there was going to be trouble.
00:35Nobody had any idea that any of this was going to happen.
00:57The Richland County Sheriff's Department received a call a little after 3 a.m. about stabbings and a shooting.
01:05They needed help.
01:07I asked the captain where he wanted me to go.
01:10And he said, go to the hospital and talk to the guy that's been shot.
01:13I said, I sure will.
01:16No one knew if he was a suspect or a victim at that time.
01:20I walked into the hospital emergency room.
01:26I pulled this oxygen mask off.
01:28And I said, no, you're hurt really bad.
01:31So if you want to tell me something, tell me now.
01:35He said, she put an X on us.
01:42Almy is definitely a small town.
01:58It's quiet.
01:59It's like the movie Pleasantville, just over and over again.
02:02There's just not a lot to do other than maybe hanging out in the high school parking lot and going to the grocery store.
02:10I think young women in towns like this spend a lot of time trying to connect with other people,
02:15trying to find deeper meaning or stand out in an interesting way.
02:20And if I'm being honest, sometimes for women living in a small town with nothing else to do,
02:25that level of boredom can breed bitchiness.
02:30And there are definitely things that go on in the dark that we don't always see.
02:37Almy might not be Las Vegas, but there is one place young women like to hang out, the 24-hour Walmart.
02:48My name is Misty Gangloff.
02:50I started working at Walmart in 2000.
02:54I'm wearing the glasses due to migraines.
02:57I started having migraines when I was around 18 years old.
03:02The red helps tone everything down.
03:05Only Walmart.
03:07You would have the strange people come out when it came in dark, middle of the night.
03:14If you think about, like, The Lost Boys or Buffy, you know, sort of things feel a little off.
03:19Or maybe you're hearing or seeing things in a small town that you're not quite sure if you're there.
03:24And it's easy to make the leap to think we live in a place where there's something bigger and darker and more mysterious going on.
03:35Walmart isn't Misty's dream job, but it'll do for now.
03:41I didn't know what I wanted to do, who I wanted to be.
03:46I just felt out of place anywhere.
03:49But working at Walmart, I felt like I had a couple friends.
03:54I became friends with Oscar Eck and Jenny Wolf.
04:00I became friends with Oscar because of his energy.
04:05It seemed positive.
04:07And then Oscar and I were living together as roommates.
04:11And then I met Jenny through Oscar.
04:15Jenny Wolf was in her early 20s.
04:19Jenny was a bit of a troubled soul, didn't have the best home life, was a little lost and trying to find herself, trying to find family or community.
04:29I thought she was a good kid because she was younger than I was.
04:35And I just thought we'd be good friends, too.
04:39We would hang out together, talk, learn more about each other, about our past, what we did, and everything seemed good.
04:50Misty and Jenny grow closer and soon discover they have something else in common besides Walmart.
04:57I became interested in Wicca around 2000, 2001, somewhere in there.
05:04And it was mainly Earth and nature and positive.
05:09Wicca is a form of paganism.
05:14It's keeping in mind that everything is connected in the universe.
05:18I talked with Jenny about the herbs, the flowers, the crystals, the stuff that is supposed to help ward away the negative.
05:28Misty and Jenny's mystical bond over Wicca elevates their friendship into a whole new realm.
05:37Witches are everywhere.
05:39Witches are everywhere.
05:40You'll know a witch when you find one.
05:42The thing I love about witchcraft is no one gives you your power.
05:46You already have it and you wield it yourself.
05:50But I think anything that's about self-possessed power for women incites fear in others.
05:59Some people relate Wicca to witchcraft, which are like two different things, at least in my mind.
06:07Anything I would do would be Wicca.
06:10It was never witchcraft.
06:12Wicca is the good, positive.
06:15Witchcraft, depending on the person, can either be positive or negative.
06:25But there's another witch walking the streets of Olney, Illinois.
06:29And she's about to turn this innocent dabbling into something much darker.
06:35So Jenny and I worked third shift together at Walmart.
06:39So we were overnight, middle of the night.
06:43I had taken Jenny home a few times in the morning.
06:47And she wanted to know if I wanted to come in and visit for a little bit.
06:52And I went in there and met Irina.
06:57Irina was a single woman in her mid-30s.
07:00She was living with Jenny, who she had sort of taken under her wing.
07:04Jenny didn't have any family.
07:06She had told me that Irina had taken her in when she was young.
07:12For Jenny and myself to be friends, Irina had to be involved.
07:18That way, Irina could keep an eye on Jenny.
07:23Irina didn't seem like too big a presence.
07:27But something didn't sit right to begin with.
07:31I just couldn't pinpoint what it was.
07:34Irina seemed like she was dumb as a box of rocks.
07:37Not only does Irina seem dense to Misty, but she comes off a little desperate too.
07:46I would go to hang out with Jenny, try to be able to do something.
07:52And Irina was just there.
07:56And she was always complaining about something.
08:00It was always some problem here or there.
08:06Irina is always just sort of there, being this weird kind of pick-me character in their lives.
08:11And Misty is not so sure about this older woman who always seems to be there.
08:17I believe Irina was hanging around with younger people such as Jenny and myself
08:24because she didn't have anybody her age to hang around.
08:28It doesn't take long for Irina to figure out the perfect inn with the two younger women.
08:35Irina definitely thought she was a witch.
08:38She was very much into candle reading and tarot cards.
08:45Jenny told Irina about their shared interest in the occult.
08:49And there was a bit of a, like, jackpot moment for Irina.
08:53She immediately pitches that they should form a coven.
08:56I think when a lot of people hear the word coven, they immediately think of, like, broomsticks and cauldrons
09:01and women in tall hats and chanting in circles in the moonlight.
09:06But there's a more modern version, which is just women who want to be a part of something,
09:11women who have interest in things that are more supernatural or more adjacent to the occult.
09:17But I was never coven comfortable, I guess.
09:22I was more of a loner.
09:24I'd rather go with my Wicca on my own.
09:28That way I know it's not going to be muddled in any way.
09:34Misty may have no interest in joining Irina's coven.
09:38But if she wants to keep hanging out with Jenny, she'll have to play along.
09:42Jenny felt like she owed Irina for taking her in.
09:49She didn't have anybody else.
09:51She was afraid she was going to be thrown out and on the street.
09:56I felt like she needed a way out and needed help to get there.
10:03The three of them started doing kind of light witchcraft sort of things together, like staging their home and casting light spells and things.
10:12It makes people feel powerful, especially people who previously didn't feel powerful at all.
10:26Plagued with excruciating migraines, Misty turns to these newfound powers to try and get some relief.
10:32I had a voodoo doll. I would use a needle in the voodoo doll to try to release the tension or the pain.
10:44I never used a voodoo doll as somebody else.
10:49I never envisioned it as anybody but me.
10:54Migraines are so painful.
10:58And I feel like anyone in pain, it's understandable to become desperate to stop the pain.
11:07But the voodoo doesn't work and Irina sees an opportunity.
11:12Irina tells her that she can use her magic to take away this migraine pain.
11:20She made up some bags of some sort that were supposed to help.
11:27I think she called those protection bags.
11:31The protection bags were made with different herbs and everything.
11:36We were supposed to have the protection bags on us at all times.
11:42She had already brought Jenny in in a way that Jenny was very much relying on Irina for a lot of things in her life at that point.
11:50And I think Irina thought taking away this migraine pain was a way to bring Misty in just as close.
11:55Irina presents herself as someone who absolutely believes in the truth of this power, saying, I have the answers for you.
12:04I can really see how everyone aligned with her and said, okay, guide us, protect us.
12:13I have the answers for you.
12:17Despite almost a year of casting healing spells, life for the witches of Olney has gone from bad to worse.
12:27I still had the migraines. I still had the issues. The protection bags never helped relieve anything.
12:35And if Misty's migraines weren't bad enough, Irina's dogs started mysteriously falling ill.
12:43That's when Irina has a revelation.
12:46These bad things are happening for a reason.
12:51Irina told Misty and Jenny that she had traveled to Northern Indiana and spoken to a much more powerful witch who had told her that a hex had been placed upon them and very bad things, potentially death, is going to avoid them.
13:04It's going to occur if they don't break this spell.
13:09There's this very powerful witch who has hexed them named Lindsay.
13:15And Misty and Jenny are sort of like,
13:21Who is Lindsay?
13:22Irina said we had a hex put on us by this girl who I had never met called Lindsay.
13:41And Lindsay ain't some no-name witch.
13:44She's been on Irina's radar for months.
13:47Irina had had a relationship with a man named Jackie.
13:51And they'd had this passionate affair for, I think, around four years.
13:56Lindsay Kaysinger happened to be the woman who Jackie left Irina to start a relationship with.
14:03And at this point, Lindsay is also pregnant.
14:05I went to school with Lindsay Kaysinger.
14:10When you look at pictures of Lindsay, she was a beautiful girl and just a very sweet, gentle person.
14:15But Irina saw Lindsay as the cause of all of her problems in the world.
14:20Irina tells her witches that Lindsay put a hex on them because Jackie is still in love with her.
14:30Lindsay wants to destroy their coven so she can have Jackie all to herself forever.
14:37In order to survive, they must find a way to break the hex.
14:41So it was, okay, so this one put a hex on us, so how can we reverse it and put it back on her?
14:51Did I truly believe it? I don't know.
14:54Witchcraft is about power.
14:58Irina is making sure that everyone knows how powerful of a witch she is.
15:09According to Irina, the only way to fight a witch and break the hex is with more witchcraft.
15:16She said that we needed to jump over this broomstick.
15:19It was laying on the ground.
15:23And we just walked in a line and jumped over it.
15:32Then I went through my Wicca books.
15:35Chamomile was supposed to help keep the negative away.
15:39So I did go around the yard and sprinkle chamomile around the whole yard.
15:44Just as a protective measure.
15:50They consulted a candle to see if the flame told them that the hex was still present.
15:58The flame affirmed that the hex was still there. They had not yet broken it.
16:02With nothing to show for their efforts, Irina tells Jenny that the dark forces have spoken to her once again.
16:16The hex cannot be broken unless Lindsay dies.
16:20But Irina and Jenny decide to keep this particular detail to themselves.
16:29Irina had suggested going and watching the house from a cornfield.
16:34So we went and sat in the cornfield.
16:39I'm like, why are we supposed to be watching a house?
16:44That's when Irina told Jenny to go put firecrackers in the gas tank in one of the vehicles.
16:50The idea is that the car will explode while Lindsay's driving it.
16:57And when you think about it logically, it actually cannot work.
17:03They are cutting off the oxygen supply, meaning the fireworks just kind of fizzle out and nothing happens.
17:10Jenny believes a hex has been put on her guardian mentor, but has also been convinced that she is at risk, her friend Misty is at risk, if they don't put an end to this hex.
17:29But Misty has seen enough.
17:32I thought that this is a bunch of BS.
17:37Irina pretty much would tell you what she thought you needed to hear to do what she wanted you to do.
17:52Irina is losing her patience.
17:55Every day Lindsay is not destroyed is another day for the hex to wreak havoc on their lives.
18:03So she tasks the girls with an even more direct and dangerous mission.
18:08Irina sends Jenny and Misty to Lindsay's house and Jenny then pours gasoline, I believe on multiple corners of the home, sets the gasoline on fire.
18:19It ignites and then in about five minutes it just burnt itself out.
18:25The match does ignite, but then the fire extinguishes itself.
18:32Now Irina is saying, you tried to set her house on fire and the flames extinguished themselves.
18:40We're dealing with someone very powerful here.
18:43We've tried everything else, nothing is working.
18:46So the next attempt to murder Lindsay is going to involve a gun.
18:55When the indirect attempts to kill Lindsay don't work, Irina gives Jenny a gun and she tells her she needs to just go up to the house, knock on the door and shoot and kill Lindsay.
19:12Jenny's only 20 years old and feeling fearful of this act.
19:22Once they get there, Jenny approaches the home and she's just too scared. She can't go through with it.
19:31Jenny has defied the head witch in charge. There will be punishment.
19:37Irina is so upset with Jenny that she takes away this magic salt that she had gifted Jenny.
19:48The salt from one of her patented medicine satchels.
19:52Salt is a crucial element in witchcraft. It's very protective, it's cleansing.
19:56It was probably humiliating, very upsetting to Jenny who is obviously very dedicated to Irina and dedicated to the coven.
20:07Meanwhile, Misty has had enough of Irina's power plays. She decides to distance herself from the coven.
20:14I stopped going over and hanging around them. I stopped being anywhere near Irina. And the only time I would come in contact with Jenny was at work. I was better by myself than around Irina and Jenny.
20:33But the so-called hex remains and Lindsay growing more pregnant every day still seems untouchable.
20:43Misty's out and Jenny doesn't seem to have the guts to do what Irina wants. Irina needs new minions.
20:51Fortunately, there are people out there who are even easier to control than young women. Young men.
20:57She had pulled my friend Oscar in the mix. It had to have happened when Oscar was giving Jenny rides home from work.
21:11He was also Misty's platonic roommate and also had interest in the occult. After he met Irina, he was convinced that she was very powerful. Somebody who could teach him the ways of the occult and witchcraft.
21:24And having two new henchmen under your command is better than one.
21:31So enter David Linder, who Irina met when he traveled with his roommate to visit Irina and Jenny in Illinois.
21:39David seemed like he was a bit of a big talker. And I do believe he had some interest in the occult.
21:46David Linder gave the impression he was a bad guy. Whether it was true or not, he just put the impression out there.
21:51He either said he was in the military or had been in the military.
21:56I think Irina immediately knew that this was somebody who was potentially going to be able to hurt or kill her target.
22:04And it does seem that Irina was able to convince David that she was a very powerful witch.
22:09Irina tells Oscar and David about the hex and how the only way to break it is to kill Lindsay.
22:18Oscar has an interest in the occult and David is especially excited to help.
22:24He claims he's a warlock and has broken hexes before.
22:27I do believe that Oscar and David were also seduced by this idea of power.
22:36That she was somebody who was very powerful and could imbue them with the same power.
22:40Irina waits until Jenny leaves her work. Then she gathers her new henchmen for a seance.
22:55They started by casting a circle. A circle has no beginning or end.
23:04That's creating a protective space to do whatever it is you intend to do with your ritual.
23:11Irina carved Lindsay's name in one candle and baby on the other candle.
23:17Now if you're using candles in your ritual, the intention can be carved into the candle to be very direct with what you are sending your energy towards.
23:30The dark forces warn Irina. Their window is closing and Lindsay and her baby must be gone before these candles burn out.
23:39I believe that added in this element of time, this speed where how can you really think about anything if it needs to happen so fast.
23:49With the flames lit and the clock ticking, Irina turns up the heat.
23:54They were calling in demons to assist them.
24:00She wanted to open the gates of hell and receive messages and protection from these, I believe, seven sub-demons.
24:13Then she very dramatically presents Oscar with the murder weapon, which is a knife that needs to be used to stab Lindsay and her unborn baby.
24:28The men set out into the night headed over to where Lindsay was staying that night.
24:41It was dark. Lindsay's sound asleep. There had been no inkling that there was going to be trouble.
24:48Nobody had any idea that any of this was going to happen.
24:52Oscar borrows his roommate Misty's car, which runs quieter than his old Mustang.
25:04But first, he and David make a stop at a familiar location.
25:09David and Oscar drove to Walmart in Omni and they bought leather gloves and a ski mask.
25:14They then headed to Jackie's house because they had been following Lindsay's movements enough that they knew she would be staying at Jackie's house instead of her own.
25:26They'd already ran surveillance on the house, so they knew what they were going to try to go in and get through the unlocked door.
25:38They initially entered the home to sort of case it out and get a sense of who exactly was there and where they were in the home.
25:47But the second they entered, a dog started barking.
25:50It's dark. They can't see exactly what's going on.
25:57Then all of a sudden, they look down the hall and there's a woman.
26:01She had a larger midsection.
26:04Lindsay's eight months pregnant at the time.
26:07They attack her and stab her three times.
26:11A man rushes in and they stab him too.
26:16They stabbed him right in the chest, right in the heart.
26:25And that's when another man runs up from the basement with a shotgun.
26:30He points the shotgun up in the air and he clubs Oscar in the face with it.
26:35And then David grabs the barrel of the shotgun to help Oscar.
26:40And the trigger's pulled.
26:42David is shot in his abdomen.
26:44And then the man picked up the knife.
26:49And he just swung the knife at Oscar Eck.
26:53And he stabbed him in the leg.
26:56And Oscar runs out the door.
27:01The dispatch called and said that they had evidently had a man shot and another man stabbed in Claremont.
27:05I'm less than a minute away.
27:06So I just went straight to it.
27:07As I got to the house, they were screaming.
27:08Somebody got shot.
27:09Somebody got stabbed.
27:10There's blood everywhere.
27:11That's when Deputy Sheriff Blythe sees someone he knows.
27:12Lindsay's boyfriend Jackie.
27:13Alive but in shock.
27:14Jackie was afraid that I was going to arrest him for shooting David.
27:15And I said, I'm not arresting you.
27:16You know, we got to get to the bottom of this.
27:17I went in the door.
27:18I went in the door.
27:19I noticed a guy laying on the door.
27:20And I said, I'm not arresting you.
27:21And I said, I'm not arresting you.
27:22You know, we got to get to the bottom of this.
27:23I went in the door.
27:24I noticed a guy laying on the floor on his back and he's trying to push himself backwards
27:53towards the door.
27:54At that point, nobody had a clue
27:56who the guy on the floor was that had been shot.
27:59Even when he told us his name, David,
28:01nobody had ever heard of him.
28:03And then they took him away in the ambulance.
28:06Then I saw what appeared to be a young man
28:08that had been stabbed.
28:11There was also a woman.
28:13She had been stabbed too.
28:18But it wasn't Lindsay.
28:20Lindsay didn't get stabbed.
28:23Instead, Lindsay is unharmed and outside.
28:28Lindsay was just in a panic.
28:31She was just shaking and crying,
28:33and she just couldn't believe what was going on.
28:36Deputy Sheriff Blythe learns that the stabbing victims
28:40are Jackie's father's live-in girlfriend, Jacqueline Bennett,
28:43and her 20-year-old son, Josh.
28:46I am Josh Bennett's aunt.
28:50Josh grew up in Illinois.
28:54He went directly from high school into the Army
28:58and did his basic training,
29:00and then was in Louisiana where he was working in a kitchen.
29:06He liked to cook.
29:08Josh's dad, Jerry, was everything to him.
29:13In July, Jerry had a heart attack and had passed.
29:18So Josh came home to Illinois from Louisiana
29:23to attend his dad's funeral.
29:25Jacqueline, Josh's mom, kept calling Josh
29:29and asking him to come visit with her
29:31before he went back to Louisiana.
29:34Josh, when he was younger, was close to his mom.
29:39So he said he would go, and he went there.
29:44And that night, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
29:55I got a call early in the morning from Jake,
30:00Josh's older brother, telling me that his mom had been stabbed.
30:06She was in the hospital.
30:08She went through a couple of surgeries
30:12to repair her damage that was done to her.
30:15She made it through the surgeries okay.
30:18Jacqueline eventually recovers completely from the attack.
30:22But her beloved son, Josh, isn't so lucky.
30:26Josh died on the scene.
30:31Josh didn't deserve that at all.
30:35Josh was a good kid.
30:37He had a lot of good friends.
30:39His dad, Jerry, would have been very proud of Josh.
30:44When I first heard what happened,
30:47I couldn't make sense of things.
30:50Why were they breaking in?
30:54Deputy Sheriff Blythe tries to piece together
30:57the chaos and confusion of the scene.
31:00It was, why is this happening here?
31:03Because we didn't know these guys.
31:06I did see a knife laid on the floor.
31:10I asked, where's the gun?
31:12Jackie told me, it's over there.
31:15And he said, but there's somebody else.
31:19There's another guy.
31:21And Jackie said, I stabbed him.
31:23And I said, where is he?
31:25And he said, well, he went out the front door.
31:35I looked all around the exterior.
31:37We couldn't find anything there.
31:39I was pretty certain he was going to have to seek medical attention somewhere.
31:43I had my dispatcher call all the hospitals around and tell them, be on the lookout for a white male that has been stabbed in the leg.
31:54But what police don't know is that Oscar's first stop isn't the hospital.
31:59Rather than going to have his wounds treated, Oscar went straight to Irina's house to tell her that the plan had gone very sideways.
32:08She's absolutely furious that they botched the plan so badly and that Lindsay has not been killed.
32:14Irina and Oscar head to Misty's to return the getaway car Oscar borrowed from her for the evening.
32:22They came back to my house.
32:25I had no clue what was going on.
32:27They went to the bathroom, grabbed some band-aids, went out into the garage.
32:32I just sat on the couch.
32:36Oscar and Irina drive off in Oscar's Mustang, leaving Misty with a very bad feeling.
32:43I was scared.
32:45I was nervous.
32:47And I was wondering what I had gotten myself into.
33:02The captain on the sheriff's department had called me and he said, go to the hospital and talk to the guy that's been shot.
33:08I said, I sure will.
33:10I walked into the hospital emergency room and I saw him.
33:19He had a severe injury.
33:21I pulled his oxygen mask off and asked him what happened.
33:25And David looked at me and he said, she put a hex on us.
33:28I was in shock from him saying hex because I'd never had that happen before.
33:37After that, I did believe that people were targeted instead of just a robbery.
33:42Obviously, it was a targeted attack.
33:45He then made remarks up.
33:47Oscar Eck was with him in the early morning hours at the scene of where they got shot and stabbed at that house.
33:54Oscar Eck is wounded, armed, and at large.
34:03We put out Ebola, be on the lookout for anyone with an injury from a stab wound.
34:09And Lawrence County, Illinois Hospital made the call to the sheriff's department that an individual had been stabbed and was treated.
34:18Once the state trooper starts asking questions, Oscar realizes he has no way out and tells them everything about the murder plot.
34:26After police spoke to David and Oscar in the hospital, they traveled to Oscar's residence to perform a search and see if they could find any other evidence.
34:36We found witchcraft material, books, and candles.
34:41I was amazed.
34:43From David Linder, early in the morning, she put a hex on us too.
34:47Now we have witchcraft books in the house.
34:49And we start tying the case together.
34:52Then they encountered Misty, who is Oscar's roommate at the time.
35:00I was taken in to the police station.
35:07And my parents told me I need to tell them the truth.
35:11I need to tell them what happened when I was around.
35:14She said that Lindsay had put a hex on him.
35:18And the only way to break that hex would be to murder her or kill her.
35:22But Lindsay had no knowledge about witchcraft, nor education about witchcraft.
35:27And she denied knowing anything about witchcraft.
35:30It came from Irenea.
35:32She's the boss.
35:34Irenea was jealous of Lindsay because Lindsay was the girlfriend to Jackie.
35:40That kind of straightened things out a little bit.
35:52Police bring Irenea to the station.
35:54Where Detective Hendy finally comes face to face with the wickedest witch in all of Illinois.
36:00She was not cooperative in the first interview or two.
36:04I think she thought she had manipulated the other officers and avoided making any admissions.
36:09And when I came in, I wasn't nice.
36:12You know, I was to the point.
36:14I said, did you want to kill the young lady that was pregnant?
36:17And she said, yes, I did.
36:18Misty, along with Irina, Oscar, and Jenny, are all charged in connection with Josh's murder.
36:28I was dumbfounded.
36:30I did not understand it at all.
36:33My brain just would not process.
36:35My charge was conspiracy of first-degree murder.
36:40And my bond was set at $3 million.
36:46Even though Misty had completely exited before Oscar and David entered the picture,
36:51she was treated very harshly based on the accountability theory.
36:55Meaning she knew about the crime before it was committed,
36:58had opportunity to stop it or do something about it, and didn't.
37:02Instead of just being a player, she should have just stayed away from it.
37:06Misty should have made better choices.
37:08I thought Irina was full of it.
37:15Irina did not seem like she was that smart of a person.
37:19But I believe that Irina was playing dumb to continue with manipulation.
37:25Because if you look at it now, she couldn't have been that dumb to get people to do what she got them to do.
37:34She was playing games that she was far superior at than us stupid kids.
37:41David was in a care unit in Missouri.
37:56And he passed away from the gunshot wound to his stomach from infection.
38:02But there was a lot of physical evidence to recover.
