00:00Oh, little kitty, that's a nice mask.
00:10Oh, so this is the reason you were hiding your face.
00:16You got pimples.
00:18Oh, I can feel your pain little kitty.
00:21But this is a process we all go through in our lifetime.
00:26Hey friends, I'm sure just like little kitty,
00:29chances are pretty good that you two must be having some acne
00:34and must be feeling embarrassed because of it.
00:38So, in today's episode, let us explore the embarrassing world
00:42of these unwanted guests and burst the secret behind the question.
00:48Why do we get pimples?
00:50Zoom in!
00:53Pimples, also known as blemishes, blackheads, whiteheads,
00:57zits, etc.
00:59is a common part of puberty,
01:02as almost 8 out of 10 teens suffer from it, as do many adults.
01:08But I know that, when you're looking at a big fat gross pimple on your nose in the mirror,
01:14it isn't easy to deal with.
01:18And you feel like hiding yourself from the outside world,
01:23running into the deepest forest,
01:28or climb the highest mountain, so that others can't see you.
01:33But the good news is that, for most people, acne goes away almost entirely,
01:44by the time they are out of their teens.
01:46But the most disturbing question is, why do we get pimples in the first place?
01:56Well, pimples occur due to the hair follicle in your skin,
02:01that contains sebaceous glands, also known as oil glands.
02:06These glands make an oil called sebum,
02:09that comes on the surface through the pore and lubricates your hair and skin.
02:16Generally, the sebaceous glands make the right amount of sebum.
02:21But, as you hit puberty,
02:24the body begins to grow,
02:26and hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum.
02:31As the glands produce sebum inside the pores,
02:34at the same time, new skin cells are continually growing as well,
02:40shedding the outer layers of skin.
02:43Sometimes, these dead skin cells are not shed,
02:47and block the pores,
02:49resulting in accumulation of the extra amount of sebum,
02:53and forming a bump around it.
02:56And as sebum provides food to bacteria,
02:59they begin to build their colonies in it,
03:01and start to multiply, causing an infection.
03:06So, our body quickly reacts and asks our immune system to send help,
03:12by sending blood and immune cells to fight it.
03:15And the blood turns the infected area red.
03:18Whereas, the immune cells attack and kill the bacteria,
03:22resulting in swelling and formation of a pimple.
03:26In most cases, right before an important event.
03:30Trivia Time!
03:33Did you know that squeezing pimples,
03:36does more harm than good?
03:39I know it's hard to resist the urge to get rid of those undesirable bumps on your face.
03:45But, popping your pimples,
03:47can push the bacteria deeper into your skin,
03:50worsening the condition and leading to more redness and irritation.
03:53So, it's better to leave the pimples to complete their cycle naturally.
04:00Also, here is another fascinating thing to know.
04:05A population of 1200 Kitwin Islanders in Papua New Guinea,
04:10reported no acne at all.
04:13And it was the same case in the Ayak tribe in Paraguay.
04:18Researchers think that this may be due to their diet,
04:22which is entirely free from refined sugar and processed foods.
04:27It's question time!
04:30Today's question is,
