00:00Help! Help! Help!
00:17Phew! Thank goodness me!
00:19It was just a bad dream!
00:21A.K.A. Nightmare!
00:24Oh! Hello friends!
00:26I'm sure just like me, you too must have found yourself trapped in the terrifying, bone chilling, horrifying world of Nightmares.
00:35But have you ever wondered, why do we get these bad dreams?
00:40So, in today's episode, let us explore this illusionary world and find the answer to a disturbing question and that is,
00:50Why do we get Nightmares?
00:53Zoom in!
00:56Nightmares, also known as bad dreams, are vividly realistic, disturbing dreams that most often occur during rapid eye movement or REM sleep,
01:08when most dreaming takes place.
01:11During a nightmare, your mind is filled with terror and it sets your heart pounding from fear and rattling you awake from a deep sleep.
01:21But, despite their bad reputation, you will be surprised to know that Nightmares are actually helpful.
01:31Yes, my dear friends, according to a theory, Nightmares evolved to help our ancestors survive by making them aware and anxious about the potential threat like wild animals and enemy tribes.
01:47If you keep reliving an upsetting experience in your nightmares, it's likely because your brain is attempting to remind you to avoid it and keep yourself safe.
01:59I know what you guys thinking, that it made sense during our ancestors' time, but what about today's world as no wild animals are wandering around us?
02:13Well, sure there are no wild animals, but it has been replaced by equally terrible modern fears like getting bullied or being made fun of,
02:25stressful or unsettling situations like family issues or attending a new school.
02:32Even witnessing traumatic events like a natural disaster, accident or injury could trigger the same kind of nightmares that other fears caused in the past.
02:47But the good news is, just like in the past, these nightmares can help you deal and overcome your problems.
02:56But here is an important question, is there any way to prevent these bad dreams from haunting us?
03:03Well, even though bad dreams can't be conquered completely, there are a few steps we can take to minimize its occurrence.
03:13Like getting into a healthy sleep routine by trying to go to bed about the same time and waking up at the same time every day.
03:22Sleeping with your favorite soft toy could make you feel more secure or try to sleep with the lights on or door open,
03:31which could help you remember that your family is close by, making you feel safer and sleep tighter.
03:40Trivia time!
03:43Did you know, late night snacks could cause nightmares as well?
03:47Yes! Eating right before bed can increase your metabolism and signal the brain to become more active,
03:55which ultimately leads to nightmares.
03:59Another thing that may cause nightmares is watching scary movies or reading scary books, especially before you go to bed.
04:08So, try to avoid these habits if you want to have a lovely good night's sleep.
04:15It's question time!
