00:00What do you like best about your job?
00:02Just being outside.
00:04Yeah.
00:05I did a lot of factory work before this
00:07and I was going insane being stuck inside.
00:10And it's got so much stuff on it, like this.
00:14Oh, what, this?
00:16Yeah.
00:17And then this is the descender.
00:19That's the top, up there.
00:25Whoa!
00:30That is so cool.
00:49That's it.
00:51Grab my bucket.
00:53Oh, yeah.
00:55And then you drop down.
00:59How do you actually move on there?
01:01You release it somehow, don't you?
01:03Just release that handle, yeah.
01:04You meant the tail of your rope,
01:06but everybody gets really lazy.
01:08Well, have fun.
01:10Yeah, thank you.
01:11See you next time.
01:12Bye.
01:13Gotta paint my way down, man.
01:15So you guys have just painted the roof.
01:26Yeah.
01:27And now you've got pack up,
01:28so you're going to put your harness on.
01:30Yeah, I put the harness on now.
01:31I go to the next floor.
01:32So how heavy is that?
01:34Very heavy.
01:35No, this one's not very heavy.
01:37I've got all aluminium gear, so...
01:39Oh, okay.
01:40Keep it light.
01:41Yeah.
01:42Try and keep the steel away from it.
01:45Yeah, mine's pretty light, but...
01:48It looks heavy, though.
01:50And it's got so much stuff on it, like...
01:53Yeah, it does, yeah.
01:54Or you clip...
01:56How do you actually...
01:57Yeah, so...
01:58Yeah, so what are you...
01:59So you're mucking.
02:00So you put it in a certain...
02:02Obviously, like...
02:03Yeah, what?
02:04So you don't have to step into it.
02:06Yeah, well, I open...
02:07This is the waist strap.
02:08I open that up.
02:09Open both the leg loops.
02:10Yup.
02:11And you've just got to make sure
02:12you step through them properly.
02:13On the other side.
02:15Yeah, you wouldn't want to.
02:16You've got the waist strap.
02:18Straight up around your waist.
02:19Make sure you don't step in between that.
02:23One, two.
02:24Yeah, exactly.
02:25And then, yeah, shoulder straps.
02:26Make sure you do your leg straps up.
02:27One, two.
02:28Yeah, that's about it.
02:29And your helmet.
02:30Can't fit in your helmet.
02:31Yeah.
02:32It must take a bit of practice, though.
02:33Like, to know the straps and all that.
02:34It becomes just a bit of a rhythm.
02:35I guess so.
02:36Yeah.
02:37And you've had all the...
02:38So you have to put a drop sheet down.
02:39Yeah.
02:40Yeah.
02:41Yeah.
02:42It must take a bit of practice, though.
02:43Like, to know the straps and all that.
02:44Oh, yeah.
02:45It becomes just a bit of a rhythm.
02:46I guess so.
02:47Yeah.
02:48Yeah.
02:49And you've had all the...
02:51So you have to put a drop sheet down.
02:53And so what's...
02:54Yeah.
02:55What's that?
02:56That's...
02:57Oh, is that part of your...
02:58Yeah.
02:59Get up.
03:00Yeah, that's the seat.
03:01So what's the seat doing there?
03:02You're doing there.
03:03It takes a little bit of pressure off, you know, your spine when you're up sailing.
03:08Yeah, but I mean, what's it doing up there?
03:10Because...
03:11Oh, because...
03:12Oh, well, I'll put it on.
03:13It needs to put...
03:14Yeah.
03:15You need to have it on.
03:16If I remember.
03:17Yes.
03:18I was going to say, you can't do the drop without it, surely.
03:21No.
03:22Yeah, because all the pressure's here, you see.
03:24Yeah.
03:25Wow.
03:26Because that's where our December goes.
03:28So then you're hanging from that.
03:29Yeah.
03:30So if you have a seat on it, it just, you know, then spreads the load on you.
03:34It's washing your bum cheeks.
03:36Yeah.
03:37So does...
03:38Do some people have to say without the seat or you couldn't really do that?
03:42Well, I am today because we're only going down to the next floor and...
03:45Oh, you don't have...
03:46Oh, you don't have the seat on?
03:47No, I didn't wear it.
03:48Because I'm only hopping on just for two seconds just to go to the next floor.
03:52Oh.
03:53Yeah, actually, when you're in and out of balconies, all the time people don't wear it.
03:56Okay.
03:57Yeah.
03:58Yeah.
03:59But if you're working on like a shear walk where we're suspended all day, it's definitely
04:01where you're safe.
04:02Oh, yeah.
04:03It just reduces your...
04:04That's the things.
04:05Yeah.
04:06Because like this, you know, it digs in your legs, so...
04:08Oh, it would.
04:09You know, it stops the wood circulation.
04:11Oh, it would.
04:12You know, this is the things we've got to think about.
04:15You know, we aren't going to get compensation when we're older and our, you know, our veins
04:20aren't working properly anymore because of wear and tear.
04:24Oh, yeah.
04:25Yeah.
04:26That's it.
04:27That's it.
04:28Good point.
04:29We've got to look after ourselves.
04:30We've got to look out for each other.
04:32That's what we've got to do.
04:34Good point about cutting off because you've got massive arteries and veins there, don't
04:38you?
04:39Yeah, yeah.
04:40Like when you haven't got the seat on, it's like, you know, it's like this.
04:43Yeah.
04:44And you're up there for hours.
04:46Sometimes, yeah.
04:47If we're on a sheer wall, it takes half a day to paint a sheer wall depending on how
04:54tall it is.
04:55I even get bothered by a seatbelt.
04:57Yeah.
04:58Like the straps are awful.
05:00Yeah.
05:01It does get annoying.
05:02Do you get pins and needles ever in your legs?
05:05I think, I think you do.
05:06Yeah.
05:07Which I sometimes ask.
05:08Yeah.
05:09Yeah.
05:10This is if you don't wear a seat.
05:11Yeah.
05:12Because it will be cutting off the circulation.
05:13Eventually you'll get pins and needles.
05:15One leg we went, we actually had to have surgery on an event.
05:18Wow.
05:19Because of the valve, it was like, got messed up.
05:22Yeah.
05:23So the blood couldn't pump back up.
05:24So it started getting a varicosphere.
05:26Yeah.
05:27Interesting.
05:28I didn't realise that that would, yeah, but you're right.
05:31But he was, he was a Frenchman.
05:34Yeah.
05:35So, you know.
05:36So, yeah, I get it.
05:41Wow, though.
05:44Still.
05:45And you don't get any compensation later if you get any injuries.
05:48No.
05:49Yeah.
05:50No.
05:51Well, we have work coming up.
05:52Yeah.
05:53So if you get injured at work.
05:54But still, you're right.
05:55Every job's got hazards and I didn't realise that.
05:56If you get to 60 and, you know, your legs stop whacking.
05:59Yeah.
06:00Yeah.
06:01Because you've been working in a harness for 30, 40 years.
06:06Yeah.
06:07There's no one there to help us then.
06:09Yeah.
06:10I love your accent.
06:11Oh, thank you.
06:12It's Irish, isn't it?
06:13No.
06:14No.
06:15What is it?
06:16A lot of people think that.
06:17Yeah.
06:18It's Yorkshire.
06:19Oh, that's awesome.
06:20Yeah.
06:21I like it.
06:22Yeah.
06:24Well, thanks for the great job.
06:25Like, you've done a really good job.
06:27This building's going to be so nice at the end.
06:29Like, so the roof is all done.
06:31It's all in the second cut.
06:32Yeah.
06:33Oh, does it?
06:34That was a fast cut on the floor.
06:35Oh, I didn't realise that.
06:36Yeah.
06:37So, we've got to go through and fast cut them all.
06:38And then we're going back through it.
06:40Ah.
06:41I did not realise that.
06:42Yeah.
06:43Okay.
06:44So, two coats.
06:45Yeah.
06:46Yeah.
06:47And it's going to keep our building together.
06:49It's going to stop all the little pebbles coming down.
06:52Yeah.
06:53Well, these walls are alright.
06:54But yeah, there's a lot of walls where it's just starting to all fall away, isn't it?
06:58Every time it rains that we get covered in pebbles.
07:01Like, we get all the little pebbles coming off.
07:03Yeah.
07:04Yeah.
07:05So, what you're doing is going to sort of seal them in.
07:07Yeah.
07:08It sort of glues it all together almost, doesn't it?
07:09That's good.
07:10Our building needs gluing together.
07:12That's a relief.
07:15Yeah.
07:16We did this one as well.
07:19About...
07:20Oh, did you?
07:21About eight years ago now.
07:22Oh, did you really?
07:23Yeah.
07:24So...
07:25Oh, wow.
07:26It's supposed to get redone every ten years.
07:28So, you know, after...
07:29Oh, I didn't...
07:30After a few years to start, you know, you do...
07:33You know, with the water getting in, it's coming through.
07:36Oh, I did not realise that.
07:39Okay.
07:40Because this one was in quite bad condition.
07:42Terrible.
07:43The handle and handrails and everything on that one.
07:46We were here.
07:47We were living here when...
07:48So, I don't really remember that though.
07:50But we would have seen you though.
07:52Yeah, you would have.
07:53We've been here for that long.
07:54Oh, good job.
07:55Well, it does look good.
07:57It does really look good, that building.
07:59Yeah.
08:00But hey, there's a few bubbles and that now and a while, but that's expected.
08:04Yeah.
08:05A lot is going to get in somewhere.
08:06Yeah.
08:07The roof is, you know, very old.
08:08So, you two, you two were on that building?
08:11Yeah, we were on that one.
08:12That's awesome.
08:13Yeah.
08:14Yeah.
08:15Time goes quick, doesn't matter.
08:16Yeah.
08:17Yeah.
08:18It's crazy.
08:19And you've got so much equipment too that you have to take, like, I can't believe it.
08:24Like all this, when you look at all that, like I don't know how.
08:28No, this stuff on our harness now is very minimal.
08:31You should see how much stuff we have on our harness.
08:34Yeah, what do you actually have on your harness at the moment?
08:37Yeah, sometimes you have, what's that?
08:40That's a descender, backup device.
08:43What's a backup device?
08:45So, that just goes on your other rope for redundancy.
08:48Right, okay.
08:49For if this one breaks, you'll fall onto this one.
08:51Oh, God.
08:52Yeah.
08:53Safety fast, you know.
08:54Oh.
08:55We have two ropes in case one stops.
08:57Yeah.
08:58Have you ever had one snap?
09:00No.
09:01No.
09:02No.
09:03It shouldn't happen.
09:04Yeah.
09:05Yeah.
09:06But yeah, when we do our rope access talks, we have so much stuff on these harnesses.
09:11It's a pretty full on course.
09:13A lot of rigging, a lot of hauling, rescuing dummies and stuff like that.
09:19Oh, how cool.
09:20So there's a dummy hanging on a rope and you have to go and get them?
09:23Yeah, you've got to climb up and get him off the rope and bring him down.
09:26Like, connect him to yourself and bring both of these down together.
09:31So someone...
09:32You've got to know how to rescue, you know, your mate.
09:34If something happens, you've got to be able to get him off that rope and onto yours.
09:39So, could that happen because like either a panic attack or a heart attack or some sort
09:44of health emergency or...
09:45Yeah.
09:46So there's a lot of scenarios that could happen.
09:47Like, somebody could either just get heat stroked and pass out on the ropes, like...
09:52Or somebody could just get a bit scared and not know what to do next, you know.
09:55Like, yeah, there's a lot of things that could happen.
09:57Normally, someone's gone badly wrong if that happens, you know.
10:02Yeah.
10:03Yeah.
10:04And have you rescued people before?
10:05No.
10:06Not in the field.
10:07Yeah.
10:08But we do a heaps of it.
10:09Every time we do our courses, we're like trained to do all kinds of excursions.
10:14Just in case anything does happen in life.
10:16What do you mean every time?
10:17Do you have to do refreshers all the time for your...
10:20Yeah.
10:21So at least every three years, we have to do a refresher.
10:24Oh, do you really?
10:25Yeah.
10:26And then if you've been off the ropes for, I think it's six months, you're meant to do
10:31a refresher.
10:32That is awesome.
10:34That's epic.
10:35I reckon that's really good.
10:37Because I'm sure that's useful.
10:39But your courses aren't very high up though, are they?
10:42Like, what sort of building do you do the practice on?
10:44Nah, it's just in like a two-story shed.
10:47Warehouse.
10:48Like a warehouse.
10:49Yeah.
10:50Sort of thing.
10:51So, yeah.
10:52So how is that then when you do a course in a warehouse and then you come to a building
10:56like this?
10:57Well, that's the thing.
10:58It's completely different to working in the field.
11:00Like, the stuff we do in there is miles different to the stuff we do out here.
11:05Like, you know.
11:06Same concept, but it's so different now when you get out here.
11:10No tools.
11:11No, you know.
11:13No wind.
11:14No rain.
11:15Yeah.
11:16Yeah.
11:17Yeah.
11:18Not very high.
11:19And what about the dummies?
11:20Are they heavy like a human or?
11:23Yeah.
11:24I think most of them are like 80 kilograms.
11:26Okay.
11:27Okay.
11:28Well, that's at least something.
11:29I think they've got like one or two in there that are like close to a hundred.
11:33Those red ones.
11:34But it's not a real person, is it?
11:36No.
11:37A real person would be struggling probably, especially if they're not unconscious.
11:40I think when I first did my first course, they used to, like this was before COVID and everything.
11:44They used to, used to put another person up there and used to actually rescue each other.
11:49That would have been harder.
11:50It was harder.
11:51It was harder.
11:52And obviously people were sweating in that too.
11:54So it's like, good at that.
11:55Yeah.
11:56But since COVID they got these dummies in that and it's made it way better.
12:00Because you can just, you know, manhand them and you don't have to worry about him as much, you know.
12:05Makes it a bit easier.
12:06Exactly.
12:07That sort of defeats the purpose though.
12:08Like dummies, robots, they're all so much better than humans.
12:13Yeah.
12:14Well, that is awesome.
12:15What do you like best about your job?
12:20Just being outside.
12:21Yeah.
12:22I did a lot of factory work before this and I was going insane being stuck inside.
12:27Yeah.
12:28I can't be inside.
12:29Yeah.
12:30Yeah.
12:31Yeah.
12:32And what about?
12:33Sam being outside.
12:34Good views.
12:35Pacifica should want to start.
12:36I know.
12:37Yeah.
12:38This would be one of the better places surely in maybe Australia or even the world to be
12:52a rope access person because we've got so many high rises here and just the weather and
12:57the view.
12:58Yeah.
12:59Cause we're always going to be work.
13:00Yeah.
13:01Not going anywhere anymore.
13:02Because of the conditions though.
13:03Like it's beautiful weather most of the year isn't it?
13:06Yeah.
13:07Like pretty good.
13:08Yeah.
13:09As opposed to like Melbourne.
13:10Yeah.
13:11That's fair.
13:12I think just anywhere else in the world.
13:13I do think.
13:14That's the first world country.
13:15This would be a lovely, this would be a pretty good place to have a dig I reckon.
13:20Yeah.
13:21No it is.
13:22It is.
13:23Apart from like it's just the heat in the summer.
13:24Yeah.
13:25It's brutal.
13:26Yeah.
13:27I noticed you've got zinc sunscreen on.
13:29Yeah.
13:30Yeah.
13:31Yeah.
13:32Do you beat for Yorkshire?
13:33My girlfriend makes me wear it.
13:34Oh good.
13:35I never used to but you know I've got someone to look after me.
13:39You're a lucky man.
13:40Yeah.
13:41Yeah.
13:42Listen to it.
13:43Because men.
13:44Good.
13:45Men need a woman really.
13:47I don't want to be sexist but to tell them to look after themselves.
13:50Yeah we're going to do.
13:51Good.
13:52No I'm glad.
13:53So have you got, were you born in Australia or?
13:56No I'm born in England.
13:57So you've got skin that's really.
13:59Yeah.
14:00Been here for past 10 years.
14:02You do need to look after yourself though.
14:04Yeah.
14:05It's not like the Europeans.
14:06Yeah.
14:07And we've got that hole in the ozone layer here.
14:09Yeah.
14:10Yeah.
14:11Exactly.
14:12Have you got sunscreen on?
14:13No.
14:14Yeah I can't see evidence of it.
14:16Well we're not in the sun today so.
14:18Um.
14:19Maybe this afternoon I'll put it on.
14:21And the sun comes around here.
14:23But no it's nice and shady this morning though.
14:25Well you need obviously someone to, to look after yourself.
14:28I mean to look after, make you look after yourself.
14:31Yeah.
14:32Maybe I'll do it either.
14:34No you've got a good hat.
14:36That's good.
14:37Yeah.
14:38Hat and you've got long, you've got long sleeves.
14:40You've got short sleeves.
14:41Yeah.
14:42Yeah I modify it to make it a bit more stylish.
14:45Yeah fair enough.
14:46Yeah.
14:47Yeah.
14:48Did you cut them yourself?
14:49Yeah.
14:50Oh you did cut them yourself.
14:52I'm impressed.
14:53The English you've got style.
14:54Yeah.
14:55I'm impressed.
14:56They do have skirt style.
14:57Yeah.
14:58We, we, we have been told that the English.
15:00Well no it's too, I find it too hot with the sleeves.
15:02Okay.
15:03Yeah.
15:04But it's sun protection isn't it?
15:05Isn't that like material that's.
15:06Yeah it's supposed to be for sun protection.
15:07That's what I wear them.
15:08Yeah.
15:09Special sun protection.
15:10Yeah.
15:11Yeah.
15:12Cause they don't give us t-shirts anymore.
15:13They used to but now we're just gear long sleeve.
15:15Do you get skin cancer checks regularly?
15:16Nah I never, never have.
15:17Probably should.
15:18Will do.
15:19At some point.
15:20At some point.
15:21I haven't got one recently.
15:22And you're fine.
15:23Oh okay.
15:24You're okay.
15:25Yeah.
15:26Oh that's good.
15:27But no it's, I think it's, I think you're very lucky.
15:28A lot of people really do find this exciting work.
15:40It's, it's a sort of work I don't think many people could do.
15:43Yeah.
15:44So it's like wow, you know, that's awesome that you guys are brave enough.
15:48Yeah.
15:49To be on the ropes.
15:50Because there's the height, there's the risk.
15:52I mean there's the risk.
15:54Every day you're up there you fall and.
15:57Yeah.
15:58There's the little bit of extra money we get as well.
16:01But not that much.
16:02No, well you deserve, well you obviously deserve it.
16:05I mean it's, you, it is risky.
16:07Like, I mean so you, you're hooked up.
16:09So where's your hooks that you've got here?
16:11I mean they're big hooks.
16:12Oh what, this?
16:13Yeah.
16:14This is what we use.
16:16But the thing is there are accidents.
16:18Like there have been accidents on the ropes.
16:21So there is a risk being up there.
16:24Yeah, it's definitely a risk.
16:25Do you ever think about it?
16:26As long as you do everything properly, it's pretty safe though.
16:29Very safe.
16:30Yeah, what about the hooks though in the building holding your ropes up?
16:33Like there's, they're in islets aren't they?
16:36The anchor points on the roof?
16:37Yeah, the anchor points.
16:38Yeah.
16:39Yeah.
16:40Yeah.
16:41I mean, you know.
16:42You 100% trust them.
16:43You have to.
16:44Tempset in the wall.
16:45Yeah.
16:46So they're all tested every six months.
16:49Yeah.
16:50To 15k.
16:51So, I mean you could hang probably a couple of cars off that.
16:56I know.
16:57I know.
16:58No, it's overrated.
16:59I know.
17:00But I.
17:01And we got two of them in our system in each one of these ropes, so.
17:05Ah, so is your safety rope attached to a separate eyelet or.
17:11Yeah.
17:12So this rope.
17:13Ah.
17:14Is attached to the two eyelets.
17:15Okay.
17:16And this rope is attached to the same two eyelets.
17:18Fully independent of the pillar.
17:20I get it.
17:21Yeah.
17:22Okay.
17:23So if one gives, you've got the other one.
17:25Got the other one.
17:26Yeah, exactly.
17:27Okay.
17:28So all effort has been made too.
17:30But then you've got, I did hear of an accident here on the coast of someone being slammed into
17:34the side of the building because of wind.
17:36Yeah, it happens.
17:37Yeah.
17:38There is a few incidents that happen around but most of the time we're all pretty safe
17:43if you do the right thing.
17:45I mean.
17:46Yeah.
17:47I mean weather can pick up out of nowhere and I don't know what happened to him but it
17:52happened.
17:53Things happen.
17:54I guess it's like driving a car though.
17:56People are really scared of getting in a plane because the risk is worse if something
18:01goes wrong but it's a very safe moment.
18:03Yeah, that's a good point.
18:04It's probably, you're probably in more danger on your way here than once you get here.
18:09Still.
18:10Yeah.
18:11Even in this industry, the roads are dangerous, aren't they?
18:14Yes, they are.
18:16They are.
18:17Especially here on the Gold Coast.
18:19Everyone's got road rage.
18:20Yeah.
18:21Yeah.
18:22All the road work going on in that.
18:23Yeah.
18:24Well, thank you so much for working here.
18:27We really appreciate your work.
18:29You've done an excellent job so far.
18:32I'm looking forward to the building when it's done.
18:34Yeah.
18:35But it's looking so good from the front.
18:37Put them together.
18:38This is the last elevation of the balcony.
18:40So once this is done, it's got a few things to square up on the roof and that should be there.
18:46It must be satisfying at the end to stand back and see the building.
18:51Yeah.
18:52That's one of the best things about painting, I think.
18:54It's very satisfying.
18:55Yeah.
18:56Yeah.
18:57Yeah.
18:58It does.
18:59It looks so much better.
19:00Yeah.
19:01Anyway.
19:02All right.
19:03Well, thank you so much.
19:05So, can we see how you do all this?
19:08Right.
19:09Okay.
19:10So how do you...
19:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:12So you're...
19:13Time for the action.
19:14You're going to get on the rope now, are you?
19:15Yeah.
19:16So I'll put my back up on first.
19:17Okay.
19:18Grab one of the ropes, tack that on.
19:21So do you always put your back up first?
19:24Back up's always first.
19:25Always first.
19:26Yeah.
19:27Yeah.
19:28Yeah.
19:29You just always put your back up first.
19:30Okay.
19:31And then there's the descender.
19:32So that's the top up there.
19:33Yeah.
19:34And then, yeah, always sort of preload it.
19:38Just a safety measure.
19:39Okay.
19:40Yep.
19:41And I'll climb out.
19:42Whoa.
19:43That was fast.
19:44Yeah.
19:45Oh, that's cool.
19:46So there you are.
19:48Bye.
19:49Yeah.
19:50Yeah.
19:51Yeah.
19:52Yeah.
19:53Yeah.
19:54Yeah.
19:55Yeah.
19:56Yeah.
19:57Yeah.
19:58Yeah.
19:59Yeah.
20:00Yeah.
20:01That's epic.
20:02Oh, really?
20:03And so he's down there now.
20:04So what's, so do you then pass these buckets down to him?
20:08Yeah.
20:09Yeah.
20:10Okay.
20:11Yeah.
20:12Well, thank you very much.
20:14Oh, you're welcome.
20:15Really appreciate it.
20:18Oh, really?
20:19Yeah.
20:20Yeah.
20:21Yeah.
20:22Yeah.
20:23Yeah.
20:24Yeah.
20:25Yeah.
20:26Yeah.
20:27Yeah.
20:28Yeah.
20:29Yeah.
20:30Yeah.
20:31Yeah.
20:32Yeah.
20:33Yeah.
20:34Yeah.
20:35Yeah.
20:36Yeah.
20:37Yeah.
20:38Yeah.
20:39Yeah.
20:40Yeah.
20:41Yeah.
20:42Yeah.
20:43Yeah.
20:44Yeah.
20:45Yeah.
20:46Yeah.
20:47Yeah.
20:48Yeah.
20:49Yeah.
20:50Yeah.
20:51Yeah.
