Who currently holds real control on the ground in Sweida, and could this latest fighting upset supporters of President al-Sharaa? Security analyst Dr. Riad Kahwaji shares his thoughts.
Transcript
00:00Dr. Riyad, there are accusations flying between Syrian government and Druze fighters.
00:04But who on the ground is currently holding real control in Sweda?
00:09And what will this latest fighting do?
00:11Will it maybe upset supporters of President al-Shara,
00:14who has had minorities support him up until this point, it seems?
00:17Israel has no say.
00:19This is a Syrian country.
00:21This is a Syrian sovereignty.
00:23So Israel has placed itself as the protector of the Druze
00:29without any international mandate or a U.N. mandate to do so.
00:36And we have to remember that Israel already has plenty of forces across the borders
00:44or in various areas in the southern part of Syria.
00:48And it wants to legitimize this as part of an agreement with the government
00:54that would allow it to stay for several years under the pretext of making sure that there is a full transition in Syria
01:04and the current government manages to establish itself and establish security all over the country
01:15and will not allow any fundamentalist or extremist groups from coming to the Israeli borders.
01:24Right now in Sweda, the Syrian security and armed forces were driven out yesterday by the bombardment of the Israelis.
01:35So we have a security vacuum created by Israel.
01:40What we have in Sweda are the Druze infarctions that were owned by Israel.
01:47They are the ones in control of the city of Sweda and parts of the suburbs of Sweda.
01:53They are the ones who are clashing now with the Sunni tribesmen moving from the neighboring Daraa province,
02:02which is to the west of the Sweda province.
02:06This is the actual situation.
02:08Now there are reports coming saying that Israel will allow contingents of the Syrian internal security forces
02:18to re-enter, to return to Sweda to help enforce peace and disengage both fighting parties.
