Dorothy Pilling was an English composer, pianist and music teacher. She was born near Manchester and studied at the Royal Northern College of Music (then called the Matthay School of Music), where she later taught. Her compositions include many piano pieces and songs. A legendary king of Athens, Pandion I, had a daughter called Philomela, who was changed by magic into a nightingale. This most musical of birds explains the lovely singing style of Pilling's melodic writing in this piece.
