00:00Stage 13 of the 1986 Tour de France finished in Super Bagnères and it turned out to be
00:12a crucial day in the absorbing fight between teammates Bernard Hinault and Greg Le Monde.
00:18Already a five-time winner of the Tour, Hinault had seized yellow the previous day and was
00:22on the attack again, but after the Col de Peyresort he was joined by a group containing
00:26Le Monde.
00:27The American had helped Hinault to win the race the previous year on the understanding
00:31that the Frenchman would return the favour in 1986, but a serial winner like Hinault wasn't
00:36going to turn down the opportunity to land a record sixth Tour.
00:41However on this day the yellow jersey had overstretched himself and started going backwards on the
00:46climb to Super Bagnères.
00:48His DS would later describe his earlier attack as an unusual strategic error given that Hinault
00:53led the race by over five minutes from Le Monde.
00:56Well the American now had the opportunity to close the gap and he certainly wasn't going
01:03to wait around.
01:05He felt he had every right to attack his teammate who promised to help him to win this Tour.
01:11Hinault was gritting his teeth but always losing ground as Le Monde went off in search of his
01:15second Tour stage win.
01:17A real show of strength from the Californian who would end up making back all the time that
01:21Hinault had gained on him the previous day in Pau.
01:25The man in yellow flying a little bit too close to the sun on this thirteenth stage and
01:29getting burned.
01:31Le Monde took the honours by over a minute from Robert Miller becoming the first American
01:35to win a mountain stage of the Tour de France.
01:38Eleven days later he'd become the first American to win the Tour full stop.
01:45Hinault eventually hauled his way to the summit 4 minutes and 39 seconds behind his teammate
01:51and even if he kept hold of yellow by 40 seconds this was the beginning of the end.
01:56The Badger would wear the iconic jersey for the final time four days later when he cracked
02:01on the Col du Granon and surrendered it definitively to Le Monde.
