News Letter's Johnny McNabb gives his views from day one of The Open at Royal Portrush
Transcript
00:00So, Johnny, first day of the Open is almost over. Give us your thoughts on the crowd and the excitement here on day one.
00:05Yeah, obviously, I was here earlier. I was here earlier than you. I came about 8 o'clock this morning and it was bunged.
00:10We couldn't get moving and I've seen a couple of local celebrities first thing this morning.
00:14Dennis Taylor, Chimney Nesbitt and things like that. And then, obviously, the crowd has been really good.
00:20It's great to have someone, I suppose, on our doorstep as well and then covering it for work, I think.
00:25Yeah, it's been tough. It's been a tough score, I think, for the players. I think the guys that are out really, really early probably had a bit of an advantage.
00:32And then the rain came down for most of the day and in different parts of the day.
00:36So, yeah, no, it's been good. I think it's been a long time, obviously, coming. It's been six years and I think everyone's really embraced that.
00:44And I think sort of 400 par is leading the tournament at the minute. Is that sort of a score you expected? Lower or higher? What do you sort of think?
00:49Probably fair enough. To be honest, I think, as I said earlier, I think they're really right. It's probably the easier it was to an extent.
00:58And then, obviously, the rain and that came down. So, yeah, look, it's been a difficult day. I think there's been a lot of wind.
01:03The guys from America aren't as used to the links as it is and obviously the British players. So, yeah, the scoring was always going to be a little bit difficult with the current conditions.
01:11And then the local players. Tom McKibbin out first thing this morning, one over par. Darren Clark out, four over par. And then Roy's two under through nine.
01:18So, just give your thoughts on the local players.
01:20Yeah, I think we'll start with Tom. Obviously, he had a bit of a nightmare start. I think he was two over after the first three holes.
01:25And then he had a birdie and an eagle as well in the front nine. And it's just a pity that he obviously bogeyed the last.
01:31I think Darren, Darren, he was out maybe an hour later and I think he just maybe struggled, I think, in the greens and things like that.
01:37And Roy at this time, we're obviously recording. He's two under heading into the back nine.
01:42I think maybe Roy's driving. Probably hasn't been great in the first opening of nine holes, but that's me.
01:46He's under par and fingers crossed by the time we get home and nearly watch the last four or two that he's even further up that leaderboard.
