00:00Devil's Ear Cave Incident
00:01On August 21, 2004, Brian Tindall and three friends arrived at Ginny Springs around 8.30pm.
00:07Brian was 24 years old and had been diving for three years.
00:10He had done over 100 open water dives.
00:13Two friends took a canoe and another friend went snorkeling.
00:15Brian wanted to explore the underwater cave entrances.
00:18Brian put on his diving gear.
00:20His tank showed 500 psi of air.
00:23He took his LED flashlight and did his final checks.
00:26Brian's first dive took him to Little Devil at 30 feet deep.
00:29The entrance was tight but opened into a large chamber inside.
00:32He looked around with his flashlight and went back.
00:34Then, Brian went to Devil's Eye.
00:36This one was deeper at 40 feet with a bigger entrance.
00:38He swam just inside and saw multiple tunnels going into darkness.
00:42Brian went back to the surface to tell his friends what he saw.
00:45Brian was excited about what he had discovered.
00:47As the night went on, Brian made several more short dives.
00:49His air supply was getting lower with each dive.
00:52Around 2am, Brian checked his air gauge.
00:54He had about 12 minutes of air left.
00:56Brian wanted to check out the main Devil's Ear entrance.
00:58He told his friends he would be right back.
01:00Devil's Ear opened up at 20 feet deep.
01:02The entrance was bigger than the other cave openings.
01:05Brian dropped down and swam inside.
01:07His light showed the passage was huge at first.
01:09He kept swimming deeper, following the main tunnel.
01:11Then the ceiling started getting lower.
01:12The passage narrowed into a tight squeeze about 4 feet across.
01:16Beyond it, his light showed another chamber.
01:18Brian thought he could make it through.
01:20He positioned himself carefully and started squeezing through.
01:22Halfway through, his tank valve caught on something in the ceiling.
01:25Brian tried to back out but he was stuck.
01:27He pushed forward but was still stuck.
01:29His movements kicked up sand and dirt from the cave floor.
01:32In seconds, the water around him turned brown and murky.
01:35His breathing got faster, using up his remaining air.
01:37He was locked in place in the darkness, 20 feet underwater and 50 feet inside the cave.
01:41Up on the surface, his three friends kept waiting.
01:44They watched for Brian's light or bubbles to appear.
01:46They started calling his name across the water.
01:48No bubbles, no light, no Brian.
01:50The three friends realized something was seriously wrong.
01:53They called for emergency help.
01:54A Ginny Springs diving instructor got the emergency call.
01:57He put on his gear and dropped into Devil's Ear Spring.
01:59He swam toward the narrow sections of the cave system.
02:02He knew where divers usually got into trouble.
02:04There, wedged in the narrow opening, he found Brian.
02:06The instructor worked carefully to free Brian from the restriction.
02:09Once free, the instructor pulled Brian's body back through the opening.
02:12The journey back to the surface took about 10 minutes.
02:15Unfortunately, Brian had died in the underwater cave.
02:17Seth Rowe's Cave Incident
02:19On June 20, 2015, Seth Rowe went to explore caves in Singhampton, Ontario.
02:24Seth was a 30-year-old outdoor enthusiast.
02:27He went to the conservation park with a headlamp and nothing else.
02:30Seth wanted to explore hidden crevice caves.
02:32He hadn't told anyone where he was going.
02:34The cave was unmarked and unnamed.
02:36It was a narrow crack in the rocky ground, only 20 inches wide.
02:39The entrance dropped steeply into the earth and got narrower as it went down.
02:43Seth turned on his headlamp and began to lower himself inside.
02:46The walls closed around him quickly.
02:48They pressed on his shoulders as he moved deeper.
02:50At its narrowest, the passage was just 15 inches wide.
02:53Seth had to move very carefully.
02:55He reached a point where the cave got even tighter.
02:57A section of rock jutted out above him, blocking his path forward.
03:00Seth decided it wasn't worth the risk and began to go back.
03:03Close to the entrance, Seth put his foot against a small rock outcrop to pull himself up.
03:07The stone had been worn down by water for centuries.
03:10It shifted under his weight and crumbled away.
03:12Seth dropped like a stone and fell 36 feet into the darkness.
03:15His body hit the jagged walls before coming to a stop.
03:18Seth was wedged in a narrow space far below the surface.
03:21Seth was alive, but his situation was very bad.
03:24His arms and legs were scraped and bruised.
03:26Seth tried to move, but the crevice held him tightly.
03:28Seth began calling for help.
03:30His voice faded into the silence.
03:31By evening, Seth began to lose hope.
03:33Then two hikers were walking back to the trailhead.
03:35They heard faint cries for help.
03:37They stopped and listened carefully.
03:38They followed the sound of the cave entrance.
03:40The hikers looked into the opening and spotted a faint glow far below.
03:43Seth's voice reached them, weak but clear.
03:46The hikers immediately called emergency services.
03:48Rescue team arrived quickly.
03:50Rescuers lowered water and blankets to Seth.
03:52This kept him hydrated and warm while they worked.
03:54As midnight approached, they brought in a chisel.
03:56They used it to carve away the rock around Seth.
03:58The work was very slow.
04:00By dawn, Seth had been underground for nearly 20 hours.
04:03Rescuers continued chipping away at the rock.
04:05Finally, after 22 hours of effort, Seth was freed.
04:08He came out pale and battered but alive.
04:10Rescuers wrapped him in blankets and rushed him to an ambulance.
04:13His injuries were minor.
04:14Cuts, bruises and dehydration.
04:16Seth recovered from his ordeal in the unnamed cave.
04:18Gruta del Rio Chantalcuatlan Cave Incident
04:21On March 9, 2003, a group of tourists went to Gruta del Rio Chantalcuatlan in Guerrero, Mexico.
04:27The group was poorly equipped visitors led by a local guide.
04:30The guide knew the cave passages but lacked safety training and equipment.
04:33The entrance to the cave was a steep canyon that dropped into darkness.
04:36The upper entrance required climbers to go down a dangerous slope of loose rock.
04:40Every step had to be carefully placed.
04:42Every handhold had to be tested before trusting it.
04:44Maria Santos was excited about the adventure ahead.
04:46She had come to Mexico for vacation, seeking thrills and experiences.
04:50Maria was partway down the entrance canyon.
04:52She carefully placed her feet on narrow ledges.
04:54She tested each handhold before putting her weight on it.
04:56The rock felt solid under her fingers.
04:58Above her, another tourist made a movement.
05:00A rock broke free from the formation above.
05:02The stone moved toward Maria like a bullet.
05:04It was just a few pounds of limestone that had been wedged in place for decades.
05:07The stone struck her in the head with a tremendous force.
05:10The impact was devastating.
05:11The blow to her head caused immediate trauma.
05:14It also made her lose her grip on the slope.
05:15Her hands released their hold on the rock face.
05:17Her feet lost their grip on the narrow ledges.
05:20In an instant, she went from being a controlled climber to a falling object.
05:23Maria's body struck the rocky slope repeatedly as she tumbled toward the darkness below.
05:27Each impact added new injuries to the massive head trauma.
05:30The other tourists watched in horror as Maria disappeared into the darkness.
05:34Then there was silence.
05:35The guide now faced every tour leader's worst nightmare.
05:38The group's first instinct was to climb down after her.
05:40But the guide stopped them.
05:42The guide immediately called rescuers.
05:43When rescuers finally reached Maria's body, they confirmed what everyone knew.
05:47The combination of the head trauma and the fall had been fatal.
05:49Maria had probably died instantly.
05:51The injuries were so severe that survival would have been impossible.
05:54The body recovery was a complex operation.
05:56The rescuers had to package the body carefully as they had to lift it up the dangerous slope
06:01without causing more rock falls.
06:02The recovery took hours to complete.
06:04When Maria's body was finally brought to the surface, the full horror became clear.
06:08What had started as a fun tourist trip had ended in a preventable death.
06:12Caribbean Island Cave Incident
06:13In February 1994, two friends named David Parks and Jerry were on vacation on a Caribbean island.
06:19They were having a great time enjoying the warm beaches and sunny skies.
06:23While talking with local people, they heard about a mysterious cave with a pool inside.
06:27It sounded like an exciting adventure.
06:29David and Jerry weren't experienced cave explorers or divers, but that didn't stop them.
06:33They just grabbed some snorkeling gear and a couple of diving lights and went looking for the cave.
06:37When they found the cave, it was more scary than they expected.
06:40It was a straight drop, 70 feet down.
06:42But they didn't turn back.
06:43Carefully, they climbed down the damp walls.
06:46Each step took them deeper into the darkness.
06:48At the bottom, they found a large room with a pool in the middle.
06:51The water was dark and still.
06:52What they didn't know was that this pool connected to narrow underwater tunnels.
06:57These tunnels ran through the cave with only small air pockets here and there where someone could breathe.
07:01David and Jerry were excited.
07:03They got into the cold water and turned on their lights.
07:05They swam into the first tunnel, coming up for air in the small air pockets when they needed to breathe.
07:10The passages were narrow with walls close on all sides.
07:13After swimming for a while, they came up in a larger room.
07:15This room had a small rock ledge where they could rest.
07:18They sat there for a moment, catching their breath.
07:20Then they realized they were deep inside the cave, far from the exit.
07:23It was time to go back.
07:25David went first.
07:26At first, everything seemed fine as they swam through the water.
07:28But then something bad happened.
07:30Their kicking stirred up dirt from the bottom, turning the clear water into a cloudy mess.
07:34In seconds, they couldn't see anything.
07:36In the confusion, David lost Jerry.
07:38He turned around, trying to find his friend, but it was impossible to see.
07:42Even worse, he lost his sense of direction.
07:44All the tunnels looked the same, and he couldn't tell which way let out.
07:47David started to panic as his lungs began to burn for air.
07:50David realized he was swimming deeper into the cave instead of out.
07:53He couldn't see anything and couldn't breathe.
07:55Just when he thought he couldn't hold his breath any longer, his hand found an air pocket.
07:59He came up too fast and hit his head on a sharp rock hanging from the ceiling.
08:02It hurt, but he was just happy to breathe again.
08:05The air pocket was very small.
08:07David held onto a narrow rock shelf, breathing hard.
08:10The air didn't smell fresh.
08:11He felt trapped with the weight of the cave above him.
08:14Every second felt like he was running out of time.
08:16Meanwhile, Jerry had made it back to the entrance pool.
08:19He waited for David, but minutes passed with no sign of him.
08:22Jerry started to worry.
08:23He shouted into the water and shined his light into the tunnel, hoping to see David.
08:27Back in the air pocket, David knew he couldn't stay there much longer.
08:30The air wasn't good, and he was running out of options.
08:33He put his mask back on and went underwater.
08:35He turned off his light, thinking maybe he could see Jerry's light through the cloudy water.
08:39Then he saw it, a faint glow in the distance.
08:41Taking the deepest breath he could, David pushed off from the rock and swam toward the light.
08:45His lungs felt like they were about to burst.
08:47Finally, his head broke the surface, and he saw Jerry's bright light.
08:51He had made it.
08:52Exhausted and gasping for air, he held onto the edge of the pool as Jerry pulled him out.
08:56They climbed back up the shaft and out of the cave.
08:58When they finally saw sunlight again, it felt like waking up from a bad dream.
09:02Roaring River Cave Incident
09:03On October 14, 2022, a team of special cave divers planned to explore Roaring River Cave.
09:09The cave has tunnels that go deep underwater.
09:11Eric Hahn, who was 27 years old, had an important job.
09:14He would place extra air tanks at certain spots in the cave.
09:17These tanks would be safety stops for divers going deeper into the cave.
09:21The team had different jobs.
09:22Two divers would go to the deepest parts of the cave.
09:25Eric would work with another diver to put extra air tanks at 130 feet and 190 feet underwater.
09:30On the morning of the dive, everyone checked their gear carefully.
09:33They looked at their equipment, their air supplies, and went over what to do in an emergency.
09:37Eric was using a special breathing device called a rebreather.
09:40This machine recycles air by removing carbon dioxide and adding just the right amount of oxygen.
09:46It lets divers stay underwater longer, but it needs to be watched closely.
09:50At 11.12 in the morning, Eric went into the water.
09:52He followed a guide rope that would show the way out of the cave.
09:55As he went deeper, the water got colder and darker.
09:58He used powerful lights to see.
09:5912 minutes later, at 11.24, Eric reached the 190-foot mark.
10:04He met one of the deep team divers there.
10:06This diver said later that Eric seemed fine at this point.
10:08Eric was placing an extra air tank at this spot, just as planned.
10:12But just one minute later, at 11.25, something bad happened.
10:16Eric suddenly crashed into another diver, called Diver 3, and started swimming up very fast.
10:22This is dangerous to do when you're so deep underwater.
10:25Diver 3 knew right away that something was wrong.
10:27He chased after Eric to help him.
10:29He caught up when Eric hit his head on the rocky ceiling at 165 feet down.
10:33Eric was struggling with his breathing equipment.
10:35Things got worse quickly.
10:36Diver 3 tried to help by reaching for Eric's emergency breathing tube.
10:40But before he could help, Eric pulled out his rebreather mouthpiece without closing it first.
10:44This let water flood into his breathing system.
10:47As Diver 3 put in the emergency breathing tube and cleared the water, Eric began to shake violently.
10:52These shakes were signs of oxygen toxicity seizure.
10:55This is a serious medical emergency that can happen when a diver breathes too much oxygen at deep depths.
11:01During this kind of seizure, a diver loses consciousness and can't control their body movements.
11:05This is very dangerous underwater.
11:07Diver 3 tried to hold Eric in a safe position while also keeping the emergency breathing tube in place.
11:13This was very hard to do so deep underwater.
11:15The pair sank to the bottom of the cave at 204 feet.
11:18As they struggled, dirt from the cave floor got stirred up, making it impossible to see.
11:23Diver 3 could no longer see the guide rope that marked the way out.
11:26If he kept trying to save Eric, both of them might get lost in the cave.
11:29Diver 3 was getting very tired, and his own air supply was getting low.
11:33Meanwhile, another diver had gone up to get help.
11:36Diver 3 had to make the hard choice to leave Eric and start going back up.
11:39On his way up, he met another team member, Diver 2, who tried to go down to help Eric.
11:43But this diver faced the same problems.
11:46Couldn't see well, couldn't find the guide rope, and had dangerous oxygen levels in his own breathing gas.
11:51At 11.35, just 23 minutes after Eric had entered the water,
11:54Another team member saw Diver 3 coming back without Eric.
11:57This told the team on the surface that they were no longer trying to rescue Eric,
12:01but would need to recover his body.
12:03The surface manager made the difficult but necessary decision to stop any more rescue attempts.
12:08He told all divers to come back up safely.
12:10At 4 o'clock that afternoon, the Missouri Highway Patrol diving team arrived.
12:14They found Eric's body at about 200 feet depth.
12:16Kalimba Cave Incident
12:17In Mexico, there is a beautiful underwater cave system called Sistema Sac Actun.
12:23It's the longest underwater cave in the world, stretching over 368 kilometers, 229 miles.
12:30It has many tunnels and rooms under the water.
12:32In December 2004, nine divers went to explore a part of this system called Cenote Kalimba.
12:38These were experienced divers who had done many dives before.
12:41They trusted each other and worked well as a team.
12:43The divers arrived on a sunny morning.
12:45They carefully checked all their equipment.
12:47Breathing regulators, air tanks, ropes-colored plastic markers called cookies used to mark paths.
12:52They checked everything twice to make sure it was working.
12:55The divers had a clear plan.
12:56They would split into two teams.
12:58Team A would go first and put markers along the way.
13:01Team B would follow behind and turn back at a certain point.
13:04The cave wasn't very deep, about 33 feet, and they knew the paths well.
13:08Everyone felt confident about the dive.
13:09Team A went into the water first.
13:11The water was clear at the entrance but got darker as they went deeper.
13:14They followed the main guideline and carefully marked their path with the colored markers.
13:18When they reached the first intersection, they put a yellow marker on the line to show Team B which way to go.
13:23Team B entered the water and followed the markers left by Team A.
13:26Everything was going as planned.
13:28After swimming for 32 minutes, Team B reached the second marker.
13:31This is where they made a big mistake.
13:33Instead of turning left to go back to the exit, they turned right.
13:36The tunnels looked similar in the dark water and they got confused.
13:39As they swam, they went deeper into the cave system, away from the exit.
13:43They swam for 25 minutes in the wrong direction, going about 1,400 feet further into the cave.
13:48Soon they realized something was wrong.
13:50The water got colder and when they moved quickly they stirred up silt, tiny dirt particles in the water.
13:55This made it hard to see.
13:57They began to panic.
13:58Meanwhile Team A had finished their dive and returned to the surface.
14:01They removed the markers they had placed not knowing that Team B was lost inside.
14:05Team B was now in serious trouble.
14:07They stopped at an intersection finally understanding they had made a wrong turn.
14:10One diver tried to find the way back, but found only rock and darkness.
14:15Even worse, they were running out of air in their tanks.
14:17The divers split into two pairs, hoping to find their way back.
14:20The first pair swam ahead, looking for familiar markers.
14:23When they reached the spot where they had made the wrong turn, they saw something awful.
14:27The marker was gone.
14:29They had no way to know which path led back.
14:31Their hearts beat faster as they realized they were lost.
14:33When people panic, they breathe faster, which uses up air more quickly.
14:37Soon, one diver's tank was almost empty.
14:40He had to share air with his partner, both of them taking turns breathing from the same tank.
14:44On the surface, Team A realized something was very wrong.
14:47Team B should have been back by now.
14:49Grabbing extra air tanks, some divers went back into the water to search for their friends.
14:53They didn't have to search long.
14:55Just 250 feet from the exit, they found the first pair from Team B.
14:59They were barely alive with almost no air left, but they were safe.
15:02The rescuers asked where the other two divers were.
15:04The first pair said they had seen the lights of their teammates not far behind.
15:08The rescuers waited, but no one else appeared.
15:10The rescuers went back into the cave, hoping to find their friends alive.
15:14In the dim light of their flashlights, they saw two still figures floating near the cave ceiling.
15:18The two divers had run out of air.
15:20Their air tanks, when checked later, were completely empty.
15:23They had died in the cave they came to explore.
15:25There were seven.
