Relive one of Navjot Singh Sidhu’s most memorable ODI performances as he scored a brilliant 76 off 107 balls against England in the 3rd ODI at Chandigarh on January 21, 1993.
In a match heavily influenced by the toss and damp pitch conditions, India’s pace trio — Kapil Dev, Manoj Prabhakar, and Javagal Srinath — swung the ball beautifully, restricting England to just 198/6 in 50 overs. As the pitch eased out, Sidhu stepped up with a composed and powerful innings during the chase.
Sidhu’s knock featured 5 classy boundaries and 2 towering sixes, both against Ian Salisbury. He showed great control and aggression, guiding India to victory with 4.5 overs to spare. His 76-run effort earned him the Player of the Match award, as India sealed a comfortable 5-wicket win.
This video revisits the vintage charm of Indian cricket in the early '90s, the rising dominance of Sidhu, and the strategic brilliance of India's chase.

00:00Noticing Sidhu masterclass knocked 76 runs of 107 balls, spared over 152 minutes, laced
00:07with five boundaries and two towering sixes, on a challenging pitch was a fine display
00:12of calculated aggression and traditional stroke play.
00:15In the third ODI against England at Chandigarh on January 21, 1993, Sidhu did not just bat,
00:22he constructed an innings with patience and precision, like a craftsman laying each brick
00:27with care.
00:29As the middle awards rolled in, Sidhu broke the shackles in styles, he launched Ian Salisbury
00:33for a massive six that soared high into the chilly sky of Chandigarh, igniting the crowd.
00:40Not long after, he rocked back and executed a crisp pull shot of Chris Lewis that raced
00:45to the boundary, a moment of pure batting poetry.
00:49Every shot was measured, every run earned, and for those who witnessed it, it was a reminder
00:54of Sidhu's vintage flair and fierce intent.
00:56Let's rewind the clock and relive this classic Sidhu innings, a gem from the golden days of
01:01Indian cricket.
01:17Welcome back to Chandigarh, where the Indian innings has just got underway.
01:44India, remember, need 199 to win this one in their 50-overs and level the series at 1-all.
01:51Terrific session, I'm sure, in prospects, as we see whether the pitch will turn out to be as venomous for the England seamers as it was for the Indian ones.
02:00And let's go to the commentary box now and join Geoffrey Boycott and, first of all, Henry Blofeld.
02:06Thank you, Charles.
02:10And it is De Petas to Sidhu.
02:18Sidhu, of course, who made nought in the first game at Jaipur.
02:21He was bowled by Paul Jarvis in his first over.
02:25But Geoffrey, although the pitch will be drier now than it was at the start,
02:29there are still quite a number of tufts of grass that probably show over the moisture.
02:38Well bowled by De Petas.
02:40Sidhu going across his stumps rather than the way when he was bowled by Jarvis.
02:44He's allowed to give away a couple of easy balls to hit, a couple of half-volley, so you've got to take the good with the bad there.
02:50And here he is, Jarvis to Sidhu.
02:56Oh, that's gone over the top for four-bys.
02:59Well, there was nothing Stuart could do there. He's not the shortest of heatkeepers either.
03:03Well, this is one hell of the delivery, is that.
03:12I mentioned in Jaipur that Paul Jarvis has a good bouncer short ball because he doesn't vary his action very much when he lets it go,
03:21but that really bounced like a ping-pong ball.
03:24And the answer in fact was four no balls.
03:42Jarvis again to Sidhu.
03:47It's a better ball, of course.
03:52Jarvis again to Sidhu.
04:02Big appeal.
04:05Not out.
04:07I felt there might have been a bit of kidology there, I don't know.
04:14Yes, the way he plays with the bat sort of behind the pad, they've got the bat and pad there for those little bobbles.
04:21Well, I don't know how the man at square leg could see whether that was out.
04:26Reeve, having caught it, gave it everything.
04:31But I, my verdict, or my bet is the umpire was right.
04:36Reeve again.
04:46Six wickets then.
04:48Yes, he's been sent to try and score as quickly as possible.
04:51This time it's Sidhu opening his shoulders.
05:01Just two.
05:02Are they coming back for three?
05:03No, they're not.
05:04Gooch chasing it.
05:05And suddenly these Indian batsmen stamping a little authority onto this game.
05:13Oh, that's whooshed away over extra cover.
05:24That is a fantastic shot.
05:25Three bounces.
05:26And off he goes for four.
05:29Sidhu has shown that he has a liking for Reeve.
05:33Yes, a lovely strike at the ball.
05:39The ball swung early.
05:41He set off very early to a very medium slow pace.
05:44Gave the batsman plenty of time to see it swinging.
05:46And he just hit through the line.
05:48Pulled away.
05:49Only one on this occasion.
06:04Thinks it was.
06:09Sussex where he's been more than a handful.
06:15been more than a handful. Well, Stuart's up for it, but I think it probably pitched outside
06:22Legs' stump. Yes, I agree with that. The ball turned enough to hit the stumps, but I think
06:30it pitched outside.
06:38So an encouraging first ball for Salisbury.
06:45What about all those runs are made in our street? Don't they count?
06:58Oh, that's a powerful shot by Sidhu. He locks the spinners. 71 for no wicket.
07:1019 times out of 20, maybe 49 times out of 50.
07:15Lewis now to Sidhu. Salisbury's down there at third man. Salisbury to Sidhu. Salisbury's
07:27four overs have cost 15. He hasn't been that expensive. But the victory here, I must say,
07:43is going to take a bit of the pressure. India do get there off as a routine, Sonny. It certainly
07:50will. It will give India fresh breath, so to speak, because they're really being battered
07:55a bit to buy South Africa in the one days.
08:02Lovely straight driver of the ball in the V between wide mid-off and wide mid-on.
08:07Oh, four byes there. Stuart couldn't get across to that one. A quicker one down the next side.
08:20Wides. So that was four wides. And we'll have one more ball in the over.
08:26I think Naujot Sidhu stepping down the wicket has certainly prompted Salisbury to be bowling down the
08:36leg side, hoping to get him stumped down the leg side.
08:39Oh, from the way Salisbury put his hands there, I wonder if he got a nick on that. End of the
08:51over, 99 for one. He's going tilting sharp.
09:00Sidhu facing Salisbury bowling. Well, there's no mistaking his attempt there. That's gone a long way
09:08and it has gone six runs.
09:13Sampai Ramaswamy signals the good news. The crowd is on its feet, the atmosphere is electric
09:20and India go cantering another six runs closer to victory.
09:29Madonna shot.
09:31Yeah, as soon as the spinners toss anything up, whether it's the leg spinners
09:35of Salisbury or John Embry in previous matches, he does like a wacky.
09:42Another pretty good stroke.
09:46That's the one there. Oh, and that is his 50.
09:5350 which is being wildly saluted by the crowd.
09:56Three fours, one six, 88 balls.
10:01And what a splendid innings. And he really has put the Indian ship on the course to victory.
10:08Pulled away by Sidhu. That's four. No need to chase that.
10:20Sidhu goes from strength to strength.
10:23He's up to 76 now.
10:25Yeah, that was an attempted slower ball by Chris Lewis.
10:32Not very well disguised.
10:34Batsman in like Sidhu, plenty of time to pick his spot and play a good pull shot.
10:40Losing marks they've seen is to lose early wickets themselves.
10:43Got him!
10:51Good catch.
10:54De Freitas is delighted.
10:56And Sidhu's innings is over.
11:00He's out for 76.
11:02The match was mostly decided by the toss.
11:23And India won it comfortably by five wickets with nearly five hours left.
11:27The game started early at 9 a.m. and the pitch was still wet.
11:32This helped Indian ballers Kapil Dev, Manoj Prabhakar and Jawagal Srinath,
11:37who made the ball swing and seam sharply.
11:39England batted first and scored 198 runs for six wickets in their 50 overs.
11:44In reply, India chased down the target in 45.1 hours.
11:48Noja Sidhu played a key role in the chase with a brilliant knock of 76 runs.
11:53His innings included two big sixes of Ian Salisbury.
11:56Sidhu's powerful batting earned him the player of the match award.
12:00This was ODI match number 795 and was officiated by umpire R.V.Ramani and V.K.Ramaswamy.
12:07As the pitch got better for batting, India calmly moved towards their target without rushing.
12:13Although Ian Salisbury boldwelled, he could not stop Sidhu, who had now hit 13 sixes against England in his career.
12:20Salisbury had been added to the England team.
12:24After that, other spinners like Embry and Tufnel struggled in Indian condition.
12:29Unfortunately, the match was overshadowed by a tragic incident.
12:33Around 10,000 fans tried to force their way into the already full sector 16 stadium, which could hold only 25,000 people.
12:41During the chaos, a pistol was fired while making way for the governor of Punjab.
12:47Two policemen were shot.
12:49Sadly, one of them later died in the hospital.
12:52Noja Singh Sidhu's 76 run innings was not just about runs on the board.
12:57It was a display of timing, power, and calm under pressure.
12:59His performance anchored India's chase and proved decisive in a tricky match played on a challenging pitch.
13:06With this knock, Sidhu once again reminded everyone of his ability to rise the occasion when his team needed him most.
