Regional New South Wales council gets government support to split

A southern New South Wales council that merged in 2016 has been given the green light to split after years of public opposition to the amalgamation.

00:00The Cootamundra-Gundigai Regional Council was one of 19 merged by the NSW Coalition Government

00:09in order to increase efficiency and reduce administrative costs.

00:13It's the first of those merged councils to split.

00:17Locals have long opposed the move over the last nine years,

00:21with many saying both communities have different cultures and little in common.

00:25The Minister for Local Government, Ron Hoenig, met with Mayor Ab McAllister and local MP Steph Cook this morning

00:32as he announced the council can now begin the transition to establish two new councils.

00:37It was easy for me to decide to try and de-merge this council that should never have been merged.

00:43It was just difficult to be able to achieve it.

00:46The Minister will travel to Gundigai again over the coming weeks to meet with council and establish a plan moving forward.

00:53It could take around 12 months for the council to de-merge.
