00:00so she'd rang me that day and said to me and what time you finished workout will
00:12you throw some lashes on me before I go out she literally had the most infectious laugh ever
00:1930 year old single mom Nadine Lott is getting ready for a festive night out she was going out
00:28for her auntie's birthday she'd always love a good night out that's kind of the way she was
00:36a young girl having fun with her friends I knew that he had sent just a text where are you what
00:46are you doing his obsession is that Nadine isn't out with her family she's out with another man
00:52I really think that this was something that was festering in his mind
00:59we went into the kitchen she was making gasping sounds you couldn't see her face
01:10it was like a scene out of a horror movie
01:16Nadine lives in the small Irish seaside town of Orkla with her young daughter
01:36she was a single mom she had her own apartment she was doing really really well
01:43she followed a career in the beauty industry so she followed her goal and she followed her aim so
01:52she had a an idea what she wanted to do and she followed it through
01:55going to work for Nadine was not a job she loved what she did she loved her colleagues
02:03she absolutely adored her clients built great relationships with them
02:08as far as we were concerned everything was rosy
02:11Nadine plans a relaxing day with friends and family in the lead up to Christmas
02:36her ex of six years has agreed to babysit their daughter
02:3932 year old Daniel Murtagh an amateur MMA fighter from Dublin remains involved in his daughter's life
02:48we were all at a spa day and Nadine said to me everything is civil everything is going well
02:55long may it last
02:56Nadine actually thought that he possibly was seeing somebody else
03:02because she said he's in good form and I hope he is I hope he's seeing somebody else
03:07Murtagh had been obsessing over his ex-girlfriend Nadine but appears to have taken steps to stabilise his life
03:17outwardly showing signs of greater maturity and a renewed focus on his role as a father
03:22every weekend for him was training hard during the week you know engaging in the odd mixed martial art fight
03:36Stephen Breen is an established Irish crime journalist
03:41Nadine still included Daniel Murtagh in his daughter's life despite the previous behaviour of being quite intimidating
03:50but she still wanted to include him that reflects her current nature
03:54Nadine has invited Daniel to come and watch their daughter in her school nativity
04:05he was coming down for the show and she was going to rent his birthday party after it
04:17I was aware that she would have to confirm to him that your relationship is with your daughter
04:27there is no relationship with me
04:31Murtagh would stay the night before taking his daughter back to Dublin the next day to go Christmas shopping
04:39not something that had ever happened before
04:43they'd gone through the whole bad patch and now he was being okay again
04:49but unknown to Nadine and her family
04:53Daniel Murtagh hasn't given up the dream of rekindling the relationship
04:58you have to think of Murtagh's mindset and what was going through his head
05:04when he was coming down to Arklo to attend his daughter's nativity play
05:09again you go back to his ego
05:11you go back to his sense of delusion where he's been invited down to Arklo
05:15is this an opportunity for him to reconnect with Nadine
05:19is this an opportunity for him to start their relationship again
05:22I think he was being nice because he had some sort of mad illusion that
05:31you know him and Nadine were going to give it a go
05:33there was no doubt in any of our minds that there was nothing going on there
05:38we all met in her apartment
05:41went to the show
05:42Murtagh was at the show as well
05:46and I always remember coming out of that show
05:49Nadine came out behind me
05:51and she just said see you later
05:53and that was the last time I seen her alive
05:56Nadine has just dropped her daughter back at her apartment
06:04Daniel Murtagh is to babysit at her home
06:13the first time this has happened since the couple split six years ago
06:17she trusted him to look after their child
06:21while she went out with her family to celebrate a family event
06:25Nadine was going to her auntie's 50th birthday
06:31in the local pub
06:32the last night that I spent with Nadine
06:36we came to Christy's bar and lounge for a meal with my family
06:42this is actually where we parked our cars
06:45Nadine's car was parked here
06:47she came a little bit later
06:50because she was bringing the birthday cake with her
06:52it was a very special occasion
07:01they've been to the nativity play
07:03they're going to a family birthday party
07:04it's Christmas
07:05she's enjoying herself
07:07Nadine was so happy that night
07:11I mean she was so upbeat
07:12making plans for Christmas
07:15there's nothing about her on that night
07:19that would have said to me
07:22that I didn't think to be concerned about
07:24about 12 of us all sitting around talking at a table
07:30with Irish people we all talk over each other
07:33so there's a lot of chat
07:34Nadine wasn't sitting right beside me
07:38Nadine was sitting beside my father
07:40because she took on the role after my mother
07:43of supporting my father
07:45he was saying she was his date for the night
07:48he had been calling her that night
07:57to see where she was
07:58or what time she was coming home at
08:00I knew that he had sent just a text
08:05you know where are you
08:06what are you doing
08:08there was nothing made of that text
08:10there wasn't always text I got to go or anything
08:13there's clearly an element of delusion there
08:17because his obsession is that
08:20Nadine isn't out with her family
08:22she's out with another man
08:23why isn't she out with me
08:24she's on a date with someone else
08:26why isn't she home yet
08:27and thereby undermining his ego
08:30and undermining his image
08:31I said I was going to go
08:35but I'd only had a baby
08:37she was only a couple of months old at the time
08:38so I kind of just backed out at the end
08:40and I still think about that
08:43if I did go out would it have been different
08:45because I would have like walked her home
08:47I only live kind of two or three minutes up the road
08:50would I have walked up
08:51and would it have been different
08:56Arclough is a seaside town
09:08on the east coast of Ireland
09:10it's a very vibrant community
09:12people from all kinds of life live in Arclough
09:14it's not far from Dublin
09:16only an hour's drive away
09:17it's a popular town
09:20people who want to live near the seaside
09:22but still work in the city
09:23we go back generations
09:29I was born here
09:31my parents and grandparents
09:33on both sides
09:35are all Arclough
09:37so our family are very integrated here
09:40Nadine Lott
09:48born in 1989
09:50is the second of four children
09:52to David and Clare Lott
09:53my earliest memory of Nadine
09:56was actually when she was born
09:57when you looked at her
09:59she had two big brown eyes
10:01and that stuck in me forever
10:03she loved other kids being around her
10:09people would actually look forward to babysitting her
10:11because it would bring happiness into the room
10:13when she'd walk in
10:14even as a child
10:14my earliest memory was probably Christmas
10:19Nadine got a Polaroid camera
10:21and we took a picture
10:22and we're like messy hair
10:24pyjamas
10:25and we looked absolutely ridiculous
10:27but I think I was only about five or six
10:29at the time
10:30but it sums up mine and Nadine's relationship
10:32it was always about fun
10:33and capturing a memory
10:35Nadine always brought the fun to my childhood
10:37I remember Nadine as my baby
10:45my fun loving baby
10:48who as she grew
10:50became one of my best friends
10:51young Nadine quickly develops
10:59into an ambitious person
11:01her passions are fashion and beauty
11:03she's busy
11:04she knew very early on
11:10she wanted to go into makeup
11:12she knew she wanted to be a beautician
11:14there was no question around it
11:16she was one of those children
11:17who knew exactly what she wanted to do
11:19and she also knew exactly
11:21what she needed to do together
11:23you just felt like she knew what she was doing
11:26she had it all worked out
11:28she knew what she was doing
11:29and now she knew what she wanted
11:30she was very cool
11:32she was so confident
11:33really just such a kind girl
11:36we always say that Nadine was like
11:38the real glue to our group
11:39I was the total opposite to her
11:46she was a social butterfly
11:48she just brought that out in me
11:50she was such a genuine person
11:51that you actually really believed
11:54in every word that she said
11:55and you felt invincible with her
12:02like many young people
12:11Nadine has dreams of adventure
12:13and opportunity
12:13so at the age of 23
12:15she decides to follow her friends
12:17to Australia
12:18I remember like yesterday
12:27the day she was leaving
12:28she had worked extremely hard
12:30to get this money
12:31to go to Australia
12:32she did it all herself
12:33she didn't want support to do that
12:35like many of her friends
12:38and indeed across many towns
12:39across Ireland
12:39people went to Australia
12:40for a better life
12:42for adventure
12:43just to experience something different
12:45after arriving in Perth
12:53Nadine plans to take a short trip
12:55to Darwin
12:56but whilst there
12:57her plans suddenly change
13:00I was going to Perth as well
13:02but I thought Nadine
13:03was going to be in Perth as well
13:04but she hadn't come back down
13:05from Darwin
13:06because she'd met Dan
13:07Nadine has met
13:10Daniel Murta
13:11a 26 year old
13:12from Dublin
13:13and an amateur mixed martial arts enthusiast
13:16he's been working
13:17as a labourer in Australia
13:18for the previous 18 months
13:20Murta was someone
13:23he was very athletic
13:24he was very focused
13:25on his image
13:25but he was also
13:27very charming as well
13:29I think she was living
13:31in a world
13:31that was like paradise
13:32and they had a good relationship
13:34in Australia
13:35so life would have been
13:36looking good for her
13:37over there
13:37it was all fun
13:41and it was literally
13:41like the holiday romance
13:42I was like
13:44what's he like
13:44she was like
13:45oh yeah
13:46he's really fun
13:47really fun
13:47but not someone
13:48that you'd bring home
13:49to your mum either
13:50but Nadine
13:55is unaware
13:55of Daniel Murta's
13:56troubling reputation
13:58back in Dublin
13:59growing up
14:02Daniel Murta
14:02was a bit of a loner
14:03acted as a bit of a bully
14:04was involved
14:05in numerous fights
14:06but they were always kids
14:07who were a lot younger
14:08and yet smaller
14:09than he was
14:10but as he grew older
14:11he became fascinated
14:12by martial arts
14:13it was all about
14:14looking after himself
14:15and training hard
14:16during the week
14:16you know
14:17and engaging
14:18in the odd
14:18mixed martial art fight
14:20he needed someone
14:23like Nadine
14:23who was
14:24you know
14:25a beautiful young woman
14:26people saw Nadine
14:27as like a trophy to him
14:28where it wasn't
14:29just about him
14:30and her
14:31having this
14:32loving relationship
14:33it was about him
14:34having someone
14:35that fitted his image
14:36but the holiday romance
14:39is about to be tested
14:41after just nine months
14:44in Australia
14:44Nadine makes a discovery
14:46she's pregnant
14:48so she had phoned me
14:52and she was like
14:53oh my god
14:54oh my god
14:54you're not going to believe
14:55I'm pregnant
14:55and I was like
14:57okay
14:57well you need to tell mum
14:59I just knew
15:02I just knew
15:03I had that deep
15:04feeling
15:05I knew what she was
15:06going to tell me
15:07so when she said it to me
15:08it wasn't
15:08a shock
15:29Nadine came home
15:32almost immediately
15:32after finding out
15:33that she was pregnant
15:33all we wanted to do
15:36was get her home
15:37and give her a hug
15:37and say
15:38everything
15:38you'll be alright
15:39and we loved her
15:41even more
15:41because she was pregnant
15:42there was absolutely
15:46never a doubt
15:47she wanted her baby
15:49and that was it
15:50however
15:54instead of returning
15:55to Ireland
15:55with his pregnant
15:56girlfriend
15:56Daniel Murtagh
15:58decides to stay
15:59behind in Australia
16:00I think that showed
16:02his narcissism
16:03and how selfish
16:04he was
16:05because even then
16:06his focus was on
16:07staying in Australia
16:08rather than returning
16:09to Ireland straight away
16:11In November 2013
16:15Nadine gives birth
16:17to a baby girl
16:18She was so natural
16:20with it
16:21she absolutely
16:22adored her
16:24she loved
16:26that all the family
16:27made such a fuss
16:28and how much
16:30we all loved her
16:31took to motherhood
16:33like a duck to water
16:34it was natural for her
16:36Daniel Murtagh
16:44has by now
16:45returned to Ireland
16:46from Australia
16:47to be reunited
16:48with Nadine
16:49and the couple's daughter
16:50For her
16:52the most important thing
16:53was providing
16:54a strong family network
16:55for her child
16:57and part of that
16:57family network
16:58included
16:58having the child's
17:00father
17:00in her life
17:01so Nadine
17:02was determined
17:03to make this work
17:04They moved in here
17:08and he was always
17:09talking about
17:09the next big job
17:10he was going to have
17:11he always had
17:12the next business
17:13venture
17:13in mind
17:14but none of it
17:15ever
17:16ever materialised
17:18after a few months
17:22of finding their feet
17:23the young couple
17:24move in together
17:25in an apartment
17:26in Ocklow's
17:27marina district
17:28but Nadine's friends
17:31are starting to have
17:33doubts
17:33about Daniel Murtagh
17:34He wasn't consistently
17:36there like a father
17:37should be
17:38He didn't want
17:39the whole family
17:40side of life
17:41he just wanted her
17:42and he didn't want
17:43the responsibilities
17:44that came
17:44having a family either
17:45Like he was all
17:47into his gym
17:47and his MMA fighting
17:49like he did come across
17:50kind of
17:51like you know
17:52look at me
17:53I have the muscles
17:54and look at the girl
17:55I've got
17:55that he did not deserve
17:58And it isn't long
18:01before Nadine realises
18:02she's made a mistake
18:04They were probably
18:06in the apartment
18:07a few weeks
18:08and Nadine decided
18:10no it wasn't working
18:11He moved out
18:14and she was much happier
18:16but she always wanted
18:18her daughter to know
18:21who her father was
18:22and have a relationship
18:23and that was very
18:24important to her
18:25So she maintained
18:28a relationship
18:29through contact
18:30Daniel Murtagh moves back
18:35to his family home
18:36in Dublin
18:37but he keeps tabs
18:39on Nadine's whereabouts
18:41He definitely had
18:44somebody down here
18:44who was able to tell him
18:45what Nadine was doing
18:46He would send her
18:49text messages
18:49and say
18:50and what were you doing
18:51with this person
18:51or in this place
18:53He knew
18:55what she was doing
18:57or who she was seeing
18:58yet
18:58She was single
19:04It was completely
19:06within her rights
19:07to do that
19:07if she wanted to
19:08and the next morning
19:10she got abusive texts
19:12about
19:13who had she
19:14been out with
19:15He had this
19:18delusion
19:19that perhaps
19:20one day
19:20they could get back together
19:21and be a family again
19:23Murtagh was on the outside
19:26looking in
19:27He could clearly see
19:28that she was going places
19:29He could clearly see
19:30that she had a future
19:31and he couldn't cope with that
19:33because of his ego
19:34because everything
19:35about him
19:36was all focused
19:38on what he could
19:38get out of this relationship
19:40Nadine Lott
19:54Nadine Lott
19:54now living
19:55in her own home
19:56in Arklo Island
19:57has just begun
19:58a new job
19:59as a beautician
19:59at a well-known
20:00Dublin beauty salon
20:01She wanted to be
20:06in the beauty industry
20:07she followed that dream
20:08any problems
20:09along the way
20:10Nadine would think
20:11about them
20:11find a solution
20:12for them
20:13and tackle them
20:13straight ahead
20:14She had a certain
20:17vibrancy about her
20:18she wasn't just
20:20looking for a job
20:21she was looking
20:22to become a part
20:23of something
20:23She loved it
20:25she's always had
20:26the passion for beauty
20:27and I think this was
20:28like an extra step
20:29Nadine's ex
20:34Daniel Murtagh
20:35continues to care
20:36for their daughter
20:37every other weekend
20:38and becomes
20:39increasingly aware
20:40of Nadine's
20:42newfound success
20:43in financial stability
20:44I think he was
20:48jealous of Nadine
20:51and how successful
20:53she was in her career
20:54and how she was
20:55getting on with her life
20:56and she had a lovely
20:57little life for herself
20:58Nadine's newfound
21:13Nadine's newfound
21:14Nadine's newfound
21:14raised in a close loving family
21:16dreams of the same
21:17for her own daughter
21:18Since their child's birth
21:21Daniel Murtagh has remained
21:23part of their lives
21:24quietly holding on to the hope
21:26of one day
21:26reuniting with Nadine
21:28eventually Murtagh suggests
21:32a fresh start
21:33We always just thought
21:36that he just wanted
21:37to have Nadine for himself
21:39she was gorgeous
21:40I'd say he was kicking himself
21:41that he ever let her go
21:43I think she always wanted
21:45a perfect family
21:48so she always wanted
21:50her daughter
21:52to have a relationship
21:53with her father
21:55Three years after
21:57they first separated
21:59Nadine decides
22:00to give the relationship
22:01with Daniel Murtagh
22:02another chance
22:03and begins looking
22:04for an appropriate house
22:05for the family
22:06to move into
22:07As a best friend
22:09you support them
22:10no matter what
22:11and you'll stick by them
22:11even though
22:12you know
22:13you're going to be
22:14picking up the pieces again
22:15He wasn't mature
22:18He wasn't extremely bright
22:20but there must be
22:22something there
22:24that would make him
22:25eventually want to be
22:26a dad
22:27to this absolutely
22:29amazing child
22:30Having signed
22:33the contract
22:33to rent a family home
22:35Nadine has high expectations
22:37for her family's future
22:39Everything was done
22:42they were due
22:43to move in on
22:44I think it was
22:46the Monday
22:47The day
22:50that they were supposed
22:51to move into the house
22:52nobody could locate
22:54him
22:54It was my 21st
23:00so it was a big moment
23:01in my life
23:02and I remember
23:03blowing out my candles
23:05and Nadine
23:05running crying
23:07And it was a couple of days
23:09later
23:10that
23:10she made contact
23:12with him
23:13but he made it very clear
23:14that
23:15he didn't want this
23:17he didn't want
23:17to move in together
23:19and to make that moment
23:20When it came to the crunch
23:24he ran
23:24She just tried over and over again
23:28for her family
23:29to make a go of it
23:30but that was the last straw
23:32She had told everyone
23:34about the excitement
23:35of her moving into this house
23:37with her daughter
23:37and, you know,
23:38getting this family unit
23:39and she was embarrassed
23:40She was absolutely done
23:42after that
23:43She was quick
23:45to let him know
23:45that there was nothing
23:47ever going to happen
23:48ever again
23:49Despite Nadine
24:01making it clear
24:02to Daniel
24:03that any possibility
24:04of them rekindling
24:05their relationship
24:06has now disappeared
24:07He again begins
24:09to keep a close eye
24:10on Nadine
24:11and any possible
24:12new relationships
24:13he suspects
24:14she's involved in
24:15She was trying
24:17to make it clear
24:17that she did not want him
24:18and there was never
24:19going to be a relationship
24:19there again
24:20So he was just convinced
24:21if she doesn't want me
24:23she must have somebody else
24:24but at that time
24:25she actually didn't
24:25have anybody else
24:26We could clearly see
24:29glimpses
24:30of his behaviour
24:31and his disdain
24:33for Nadine
24:34and that included him
24:35sending text messages
24:37I know who he is
24:40I know where you are
24:41I know where you're going
24:42She'd never give him
24:47like you know
24:47that reaction
24:48that he's looking for
24:49He'd be trying
24:50to get her riled up
24:50and she was like
24:51I'm not going to reply
24:52to that
24:53She wouldn't reply
24:54she'd say
24:54look at these messages
24:55not replying
24:56Though she didn't know
24:58what way she could
24:59stop it from happening
25:00She never thought
25:01about going further
25:02and reporting it
25:03or anything
25:03because I don't think
25:04she thought there was
25:05any seriousness in it
25:06Although there was
25:10no sign of any violence
25:11during their relationship
25:12when they were together
25:13this is a precursor
25:15perhaps
25:16to what he did do
25:17eventually
25:17and it showed his intent
25:19the relationship that they had
25:37was just because
25:38of her daughter
25:39that was all it was
25:41This showed her caring nature
25:47because he was the father
25:49of their child
25:50She said to me
25:55I remember
25:56I couldn't give him
25:57an inkling
25:57that we would ever
25:58be a chance of us
25:59getting back together
26:00because we're finally
26:01co-parenting
26:02quite well now
26:03Absolutely no way
26:19would Nadine
26:21have allowed him
26:23to be with her daughter
26:25if she knew
26:27or suspected
26:28he was going to be drinking
26:30that wouldn't have happened
26:31there would have been
26:33alternative plans made
26:34So we finished our meal
26:41I didn't want to stay on
26:43I wanted to go home
26:44I was driving
26:45So I brought
26:48my father
26:49in that home
26:50Nadine had said
26:52she was going to stay
26:52and have a drink
26:54with a friend of mine
26:54and her husband
26:55and when I got home
26:58it was raining
26:59so I texted Nadine
27:01and said to Nadine
27:02it doesn't matter what time
27:03if you need a lift home
27:04call me and I'll bring you home
27:05and I never got an answer
27:08Nadine asked
27:19could anyone phone a taxi
27:20and I phoned a taxi
27:21so a local chap
27:24Nadine arrives home
27:35to the smell of cannabis
27:36and to Daniel Murta
27:37who's been drinking heavily
27:39At the end of the night
27:42Nadine comes home
27:43to be with her daughter
27:44Shortly after Nadine
27:47returns home
27:48a neighbour reports
27:49the sounds of a disturbance
27:51The negative feelings
27:54had reached boiling point
27:56and he was of the mindset
27:59that I am going to stop her
28:00from having a good life
28:02I am going to stop her
28:03from having a relationship
28:05with someone else
28:05His mindset was
28:07if I can't have her
28:08then no one can
28:09and that's when he launched
28:10this ferocious attack
28:11against her
28:12Daniel Murta
28:15trained in mixed martial arts
28:18unleashes a brutal
28:19and sustained assault
28:21Murta would have known
28:24full well
28:24how Nadine
28:26took care of herself
28:27how image
28:28was very important to her
28:29when he inflicted
28:30this damage upon her
28:31he was used to using
28:33his fists
28:34was so violent
28:36and so sustained
28:38that he continued
28:39that attack
28:39to make sure
28:40that when he left
28:41Nadine lying there
28:42no one would know
28:43who she was
28:44that she would be
28:45unrecognisable
28:46to those who loved her
28:47what was going to hurt her most
28:51was to disfigure her
28:53this was
28:54something that would
28:55really cause her
28:57the most
28:58pain
28:59was to change
29:00her look
29:01so there did appear
29:02to be an element
29:03of vindictiveness
29:04like it was being
29:05focused on changing
29:06her appearance
29:08the thing that
29:08mattered so much
29:09to her
29:10the neighbour
29:18a former classmate
29:19of her younger sister
29:20Phoebe
29:21is concerned enough
29:22to raise the alarm
29:23and contacts
29:24both the Gardee
29:25and Nadine's family
29:26she had basically
29:29rang
29:29to say
29:31that Dan had
29:32stabbed Nadine
29:32and we needed
29:34to come quick
29:34I remember
29:35getting up
29:36just darting
29:38down to
29:38mam's room
29:39we were asleep
29:40and
29:41Phoebe
29:43came running
29:43down the hall
29:44and said
29:45mammy quick
29:46get up
29:47we've to go
29:47into Nadine's
29:48I remember
29:49his hole
29:50jumping into the car
29:51what seemed like
29:52a two second drive
29:54that's when
29:57Murtagh then
29:58fled the scene
29:59and got into his car
30:00and tried to travel
30:01back to Dublin
30:02first Nadine's
30:12mother, brother
30:13and sister
30:14arrive
30:14it's a chaotic
30:15scene
30:16we were just
30:17running around
30:18the apartment
30:19trying to find her
30:20we went into
30:23the kitchen
30:24and she was
30:25in the corner
30:27just thrown
30:28in the corner
30:29and there was
30:29blood
30:30absolutely
30:31everywhere
30:32she was making
30:34gasping sounds
30:37you couldn't
30:39see her face
30:40but I kept
30:42telling her
30:42that
30:43you're okay
30:44I'm here
30:44your baby's okay
30:45your baby's fine
30:47don't worry
30:48now
30:48everything's going
30:49to be okay
30:50I remember
30:56my instinct
30:58to save
30:59my daughter
30:59kicking in
31:00and doing
31:03what I need
31:04to do
31:05until the
31:06experts get
31:07here
31:07and save
31:08her
31:08Nadine
31:13is taken
31:13to hospital
31:14by paramedics
31:1564 injuries
31:18to her body
31:19he better
31:21to a pulp
31:21there wasn't
31:25practically a bone
31:26anywhere in
31:27Nadine's body
31:28that wasn't
31:29broken
31:30Nadine was
31:33beautiful
31:33he did destroy
31:34her face
31:36it's obviously
31:38where he
31:39really really
31:40focused
31:41whatever
31:42was inside
31:43him
31:43Murta
31:49meanwhile
31:49has fled
31:50attempting
31:50to escape
31:51in his car
31:52over the
31:52Wicklow Mountains
31:53so Murta
31:55is trying
31:55to flee
31:56the scene
31:56trying to
31:57escape
31:57justice
31:58by leaving
31:59Marklow
31:59and heading
32:00back to
32:00his native
32:00Dublin
32:01but he's
32:04going over
32:04the mountains
32:04he's not
32:05going on
32:05the motorway
32:06he's thinking
32:06that I can
32:07avoid
32:07any police
32:08checkpoints
32:09or any
32:10guarded
32:10checkpoints
32:11what could
32:14instigate that
32:15in any human
32:16being to do
32:17it to anybody
32:17never mind
32:19the mother
32:19of your child
32:2134 year old
32:38Daniel Murta
32:39has just
32:40brutally
32:41attacked
32:41his ex-girlfriend
32:42Nadine Lott
32:43she has
32:44sustained
32:45multiple
32:45broken bones
32:46and a stab
32:47wound
32:48to the neck
32:48Murta
32:49has also
32:50mutilated
32:51her face
32:51before
32:52leaving
32:52her for
32:53dead
32:53but whilst
32:55on the run
32:55over the
32:56Wicklow Mountains
32:57Murta
32:58crashes
32:58his car
32:59he crashes
33:03the car
33:03and the first
33:04things he says
33:05to the
33:06members of
33:07the Garda
33:07who came
33:08upon this
33:08accident
33:09were
33:09I've just
33:10killed
33:10my wife
33:11and then
33:11this is
33:11followed
33:12by
33:12I've just
33:12killed
33:12my
33:13girlfriend
33:13it got
33:15the investigators
33:16thinking
33:16as well
33:17this is
33:17the individual
33:18we're
33:18looking for
33:19it automatically
33:20gets the
33:20alarm bells
33:21ringing
33:21so he
33:21will be
33:21brought in
33:22for questioning
33:22Nadine Lott
33:27meanwhile
33:28has made
33:28it to
33:28hospital
33:29she's still
33:30alive
33:30and being
33:31treated
33:31for her
33:32injuries
33:32numerous
33:35numerous
33:36numerous
33:36injuries
33:37she was
33:37unrecognisable
33:38she needed
33:40over 20
33:41if not more
33:42blood transfusions
33:43they were
33:45trying to
33:45get all
33:46the details
33:46what had
33:47actually
33:47happened
33:48how bad
33:48was it
33:49Phoebe
33:49could hardly
33:50talk
33:50so I just
33:52said look
33:53go do
33:54whatever you
33:54need
33:54just keep
33:55us updated
33:55we all
33:58just lost
33:58it I think
33:59we drove
33:59home in
34:00silence
34:00we drove
34:02straight to
34:03the church
34:03what else
34:06can you do
34:06you don't
34:06know what
34:07to do
34:07in those
34:07situations
34:08I don't
34:08know how
34:08we ended
34:09up in
34:09the church
34:09but we
34:10did
34:10the four
34:14of us
34:14sat there
34:14and this
34:15lady came
34:15over to
34:16us
34:16said you
34:16was in
34:17here for
34:17your
34:17friend
34:17because the
34:18whole town
34:18knew about
34:18it
34:19and she
34:20gave us
34:20these little
34:20medals
34:21and she
34:21said you
34:22will be
34:22okay
34:22you
34:23will be
34:23okay
34:23Nadine's
34:39friends
34:39organise a
34:40vigil
34:40bringing
34:41the
34:41community
34:41together
34:42lighting
34:42candles
34:43and praying
34:44for her
34:44survival
34:45I was made
34:49aware that
34:49there was
34:50a vigil
34:50and
34:54you know
34:56at the
34:57time
34:57you're
34:57just
34:59thinking
34:59okay
34:59all of
35:00this
35:00it
35:01just
35:01has
35:01to
35:01work
35:02I don't
35:09even think
35:09an animal
35:10would do
35:10as bad
35:10to what
35:12he had
35:13left
35:14her
35:14like
35:15it was
35:15absolutely
35:16horrific
35:16nothing
35:17could spark
35:17that
35:17how he
35:20could do
35:20the damage
35:21that he
35:21did
35:21is just
35:23unfathomable
35:24it's not
35:24a monster
35:26creature
35:27I said
35:27is just
35:27pure evil
35:28they
35:32up read
35:33but
35:33they just
35:34could not
35:35do
35:35anything
35:35to save
35:36her life
35:36she was
35:37beaten so
35:38badly
35:39and
35:45Nadine
35:45lived
35:46until
35:46the
35:47Tuesday
35:47at
35:48three
35:48o'clock
35:48the
35:52nurse
35:52let us
35:53know
35:53when
35:53she
35:53had
35:54slipped
35:54away
35:55once
36:00I
36:00had
36:00formally
36:01identified
36:01her
36:02they
36:02take
36:03her
36:03away
36:03straight
36:03away
36:04her
36:05body
36:05now
36:05becomes
36:06evidence
36:08it was a
36:36harrowing
36:37court case
36:37myrta
36:39adding
36:40more
36:40trauma
36:40and
36:41pain
36:41to
36:41Nadine's
36:42family
36:42horrific
36:45to have
36:46to sit
36:47in
36:48two feet
36:50of him
36:51he was
36:52basically
36:52sitting
36:53beside us
36:54during
36:55the court
36:55case
36:55he would
36:56often
36:56smirk
36:57at the
36:57gallery
36:58he didn't
36:58have
36:59many
36:59supporters
37:00in the
37:00gallery
37:00unlike
37:01Nadine
37:01who had
37:02her
37:02family
37:02her
37:03friends
37:03there
37:03had
37:05totally
37:05unbelievable
37:06for him
37:07to put us
37:07through a
37:07trial
37:08where we
37:09had to
37:09relive
37:09and be
37:10re-traumatized
37:11for the sake
37:12of him
37:12trying to
37:12get a
37:13leaner
37:13sentence
37:14myrta's
37:16defence team
37:17argues that
37:18his actions
37:18amounted to
37:19manslaughter
37:20rather than
37:20murder
37:21claiming that
37:22Nadine was
37:22still his
37:23girlfriend
37:23myrta's
37:24legal team
37:25presents his
37:25attack as a
37:26moment of
37:26diminished
37:27responsibility
37:28in a case
37:29of domestic
37:30violence
37:30there was
37:32no relationship
37:33they were
37:34not living
37:35together
37:35the only
37:37thing they
37:37had done
37:38together
37:38was have
37:40a child
37:41and were
37:41together for
37:42a very
37:42short period
37:43of time
37:44he is
37:46trying to
37:46insist that
37:47he was
37:47drunk
37:48he was
37:49high
37:49he didn't
37:50intend
37:50to kill
37:51her
37:51but due
37:52to the
37:53level of
37:53violence
37:53it was
37:54quite evident
37:55that he
37:56intended
37:56to kill
37:57Nadine
37:57this was a
37:58premeditated
37:59murder
37:59because he
38:00couldn't be
38:00with her
38:00I think
38:02just shows
38:03the character
38:03of the
38:03pepper
38:04trader
38:04and what
38:05sort of
38:05individual
38:06he was
38:06shows he's
38:07disdain
38:08for Nadine
38:09shows he's
38:10disdain
38:11for our
38:11family
38:11shows the
38:12type of
38:12character
38:13he is
38:13at the
38:26central
38:27criminal
38:27court in
38:28dublin
38:28daniel
38:30murta
38:31is
38:31sentenced
38:32to
38:32prison
38:32the jury
38:36the jury
38:36gave a
38:36unanimous
38:37verdict
38:39and as
38:40each of
38:41them were
38:41walking out
38:42acknowledged
38:43me
38:44they all
38:45nodded
38:46the dean's
38:48family is
38:48now campaigning
38:49to change
38:50the law
38:50to increase
38:51the length
38:51of sentences
38:52in cases
38:53like this
38:53like what's
38:56life
38:57what does
38:57that mean
38:58he's got
38:58the maximum
38:59he's got
38:59the minimum
39:00what does
39:01this mean
39:02and then
39:04you find out
39:05exactly what
39:06it means
39:06and life
39:07isn't life
39:08in this
39:08country
39:09and there
39:10are no
39:11degrees
39:12of
39:14homicide
39:15in this
39:16country
39:16anyone
39:19convicted of
39:20murder
39:20could only
39:20apply
39:21for
39:22parole
39:23after 12
39:23years
39:24but that's
39:24still
39:25something
39:25that
39:26the dean's
39:26family will
39:27have to
39:27contend
39:27where
39:28they will
39:28have to
39:29make their
39:31resolutions
39:31and make
39:32their submissions
39:32as to why
39:33he shouldn't
39:33be freed
39:34he gets to
39:34see those
39:35submissions
39:35but they
39:36don't get
39:36to see
39:37his
39:37so that's
39:38one area
39:38of the law
39:38where many
39:39victims'
39:39families have
39:40concerns about
39:41but he has
39:41received a
39:42life sentence
39:42now so it'll
39:43be a long
39:44time before
39:44he's released
39:45from prison
39:46but again
39:46in 12 years
39:47time he can
39:48still apply for
39:48parole
39:49and therefore
39:50cause more
39:50trauma to
39:51the family
39:51I don't
39:53think I have
39:54any feelings
39:55towards him
39:56because I
39:57just don't
39:58even waste
39:59a second of
40:00my day
40:01giving him
40:02a cut
40:03he's a waste
40:04of space
40:05and he's a waste
40:06of time
40:06so I don't
40:07waste my time
40:09you can't
40:09come to terms
40:10with something
40:10so horrific
40:12but we don't
40:13have closure
40:14he took so
40:15much away
40:15from us
40:16turn out
40:38from Nadine's
40:38funeral was
40:39absolutely
40:39amazing
40:40that was a
40:44great solace
40:45in itself
40:45to see so
40:46many people
40:47there
40:47the community
40:48was a great
40:48source of
40:49inspiration
40:49sometimes it's
40:56harder than
40:56others to
40:57come up
40:57cause she
40:59shouldn't be
40:59here
40:59you know
41:01she's only
41:02part
41:02she'll sit
41:05here in
41:05disbelief
41:06when you
41:06see her
41:06name
41:07on the
41:07grave
41:08you know
41:09it just
41:11doesn't make
41:14any sense
41:14this is just
41:14unbelievable
41:15and unbearable
41:18she was taken
41:22from everybody
41:23her love for life
41:25is something that
41:25I try to live by
41:26because she
41:29helped me so
41:30much
41:30how one person
41:32can be a best
41:33friend to everybody
41:34is just a massive
41:35uniqueness as well
41:36she lived life to the
41:42fullest she was just
41:43always so happy and
41:45positive
41:45a really great
41:47friend we miss her
41:49so much
41:49everyone needs to
41:52remember and see
41:54Nadine for who she
41:55was not what
41:56happened to her
41:57when anyone sees
41:59her photos it's
42:00always smiling
42:02laughing
42:02she was such a fun
42:04person
42:05she's in every
42:07single conversation
42:08we have
42:08she's part of our
42:10family
42:11and that's it
42:13we talk about her
42:14what she would have
42:15thought
42:15what she would have
42:17done
42:17and I want her
42:19remembered
42:19for the caring
42:21loving
42:21beautiful person
42:23that she was
42:24I'd like her to
42:27be remembered as
42:28a genuine
42:28loving
42:29caring
42:30sensitive
42:31person
42:32she was beautiful
42:35both inside and
42:36out
42:36as a parent
42:49you're there to
42:50protect your
42:51child
42:51I can hear my
43:02child screaming
43:03so I can hear
43:04her cries
43:05so you know
43:06it's living with
43:07those nightmares
43:08with those
43:09flashbacks
43:10your sleepless nights
43:12your anxieties
43:13and just the
43:14emptiness
43:14like somebody
43:16who passes
43:17from an illness
43:18where you get
43:19that time to
43:20spend with them
43:20and say goodbye
43:21we never got to
43:23say goodbye
43:23to Nadine
43:24was there
43:28something different
43:29you should have
43:30done on that
43:31night
43:31you could have
43:32done on that
43:32night
43:33that's what
