04:39There was really nothing Nelson Piquet could do.
04:41They really look like they're struggling a bit more in the race
04:43than they have been in qualifying with the next EV car.

05:24into the hairpin at Turn 7.
05:26But defensive there going into Turn 8 as well.
05:29Nick's really struggling.
05:30I don't know if it's his arm or what.
05:31Obviously the Mahindras are not
05:33where they need to be yet.
05:34But he really appears to be struggling.
05:36And here goes Lucas Degrassi.

05:39And that is now 5th position
05:41for the Brazilian driver Lucas Degrassi.
05:44Him and Buemi are lock-stepping up the grid, aren't they?
05:46The gap is the same.
05:48But they're just continually moving up
05:49and some beautiful moves by both those guys.
05:52And then we've got Mike Conway
05:53all on his own in 7th place at the moment
05:55with a bit of a gap to Oliver Turvey behind.
05:57So Stefan Sarrazan out of these guys has,
05:59well, he had used the most energy for a moment there.
06:02But in general it's pretty even.
06:04Mike Conway is in 7th place at the moment.
06:05Here comes Daniel Lapton.
06:06Oh, late move up the inside against Duval.
06:09Duval just turned in
06:10and they just got away with it.
06:11They're battling over 9th position.
06:13And the dragging car has made substantial changes
06:15to their setup after qualifying.
06:18Because it's just not working the chain.
06:20Oh, Pique and De Silvestro, I think.
06:22Yeah, did we damage the wing there?
06:24We'll have to keep an eye out on that one.
06:25But Pique's dropped back massively, massively now.
06:28And there's the look from Jean-Erik Verne
06:30up the inside of Daniel Lapton.
06:31So the order changing every single moment.
06:33And there's Buemi on the gearbox now of Daniel Lapton too.
06:36Yeah, so through the chicane they come.
06:38The chicane where Buemi crashed out of the lead last year
06:40by driving into the wall.
06:42Well, clipping the wall on the inside.
06:43It's probably a more polite way of saying it.
06:44I was going to say what you did on purpose, Jack.
06:46So we're on lap 6 off 35.
06:49We're expecting pit stops to come around about lap 18.
06:51So we've got more of this frantic action left.
06:54Buemi still outside of the points at the moment
06:56as he gets on the brakes down towards turn 1.
06:58The man in front of him is Daniel Lapton, Lucas Di Grassi's teammate.
07:02He's not going to make it easy for Buemi to get through.
07:05And the advantage that the Renault E-Dams car has
07:07is not massively in top speed or acceleration.
07:10It's in packaging.
07:11And the fact that the car is more nimble that it seems
07:13than the others.
07:13But he's setting up Daniel Lapton right here.
07:17Look at this.
07:18Oh, goes to the inside.
07:19And can he get that job done into turn 4?

07:21I thought Lapton was going to cover him.
07:23He was trying to, I think, but a bit too late.
07:26But Buemi's just got the measure of him.
07:27And John Eric Verne is next on his hit list.
07:31He will not be an easy guy to pass.

07:33He's done a good job, though.
07:34These are John Eric Verne's really his first laps
07:36of the weekend, the day here.
07:38And he's done a good job to actually move up through the field.
07:42Yeah, absolutely.
07:42He was very ill up all night with food poisoning.
07:45Missed the first two free practice sessions
07:47because he felt a bit squiffy.
07:49But now he seems to be doing all right.
07:51Sam Verne is doing very all right indeed.
07:53He's leading the way, 7 tenths of a second clear of Nico Prost.
07:57Antonio Felix da Costa is half a second behind
07:59as they all flash through.
08:00Turvey, Verne, Buemi, Aps, Senna.
08:04That corner is a lot tighter than you think as well.
08:06It went for a bit of a track walk,
08:07and it is a lot tighter than it actually looks there.
08:09And it just shows how much these cars have come on
08:12at the speed that they're carrying through there.
08:14And the corner was tightened this year compared to last year.
08:17Look at the job Buemi's doing.
08:19It's a kind of magic.
08:20He's just absolutely doing textbook stuff here.
08:25Jean-Erik Verne is the next one, a bit harder.
08:28And as he gets progressive at the grid,
08:30it's going to get harder and harder to pass these guys
08:31because the performance is obviously there.
08:34So Lucas de Grassi, who we're on board with here,
08:36is now on the back of Stefan Sarazan
08:37in their battle over fourth position.
08:40And de Grassi knows with Buemi carving through the field behind,
08:44he's going to have to work hard
08:46to try and make up a few places.
08:47Listen to how much regen is going through the back of that motor there,
08:51in the Schaffler car.
08:53It's quite incredible.
08:55Look at the close use as well to the back of Sarazan.
08:58Very distinctive noise when he is going to regen.

09:01Into the left-hander of turn 10,
09:03then through this incredibly quick flick.
09:06Just fantastic.
09:07Now, is there going to be an opportunity for Lucas de Grassi
09:09on the run down towards turn 1?
09:12You just heard him change gear there,
09:13just as he came out of turn 12.
09:14Onto the brakes into one.
09:19Nothing doing just yet,
09:21but that was so well judged from Lucas de Grassi
09:23to stay that close to the back of Stefan Sarazan.
09:27Absolutely superb stuff
09:29as he battles with Sarazan over that fourth position.
09:33Flinging it through the left-hander.
09:34How close is he going to be on the run down towards turn 4?
09:37Not close enough.
09:38And these are the winners of the fan boost.
09:43Lucas de Grassi is one of the winners,
09:45as is Jean-Erik Verne.
09:47And Lucas de Grassi will no doubt
09:48want to use that in his second car.
09:50And Sam Byrne, the race leader,
09:51also has the fan boost.
09:52Those are our three victors in the competition,
09:55and they will get the boost in their second car.
09:58Sam Byrne is doing a perfect job.
09:59Oh, there goes Lucas de Grassi.
10:01Down the inside of Stefan Sarazan there.
10:03Another nice move.
10:04So now de Grassi will try and haul in
10:06Antonio Felix da Costa
10:07and Nico Prost in front of him.
10:10That's going to be the next key for de Grassi.
10:12I was saying there, Sam Byrne leading the race.
10:13We haven't seen much of him,
10:14but he's doing a great job just controlling that gap there
10:16in about a second.
10:18And that's exactly what he needs to do here.
10:20He needs to use the minimum amount of energy
10:22to keep that lead.
10:23So de Grassi up three positions,
10:25Duval up four positions,
10:26Guemi up eight positions,
10:28but bad stuff for Pique.
10:29I'm not quite sure what's happened to Pique.
10:31He's still lapping,
10:32but very, very slow.
10:34Two seconds off the pace of the race leaders.
10:37When I looked a bit earlier,
10:38he had used a lot less energy.
10:39Well, not a lot less,
10:40but a bit less energy than others, 57%.
10:42D'Ambrosio, he's one lap down.
10:44He had a puncture on the first lap.
10:46Lapping similar pace to you,
10:47so it'll be a while before you catch him.
10:50So that's Sam Byrne being told
10:51that D'Ambrosio's out there in front of him
10:53and he also probably doesn't need to be told
10:55that Prost is right behind him.
10:57And Prost has done personal bests
10:58in sectors one and two.
10:59Well, Sam can afford to let Nico Prost
11:01get close at this part of the track
11:02because he's probably not,
11:03unless he does a lunge,
11:05going to get past him.
11:06I would start worrying about here,
11:07turn seven and certainly turn one,
11:09but into turn eight,
11:11he's not going to make a move.
11:12Into four possibly as well.
11:14You've got to pick the parts of the track
11:15that you're quicker
11:16and that you use up your energy.
11:19Through that chicane,
11:20absolutely fantastic stuff
11:21as they come across the line
11:22to start lap 10 of 35.
11:24So we've got about eight to go
11:25before the pit stops begin.

47:41because he came down with food poisoning but the opposite is true of Sam Bird a super delight for so Virgin won races last year with Sam Bird but this is the first win for DS the arm of Citron who have taken their first Formula E victory that's why it's so important for them and also

48:15from the first lap to the last lap there that was pressure and we know the cars a handful we know they haven't got it perfect yet but it won the race today the combination of the DS Virgin car the team and Sam Bird it was it was unbeatable and
48:28well I mean what a drive with the Renault E-dam's car from the last to first and that was you know Sebastian can sometimes get a bit hot under the collar that was perfection today one car at a time and almost nailed it almost got the first last to first

49:08but I don't want to criticize DS Virgin because you know they've obviously made a great car and everything but Bird's job was even more impressive because of how that car handles but it's a team effort that's the thing they've made changes to that car that has made it to this point where it can in Sam's hands win a race you know that's the thing it's not one or the other and you can never look like that as a driver or a team person it's a combination and you've got to take your hat off to Sam you've got to take your hat off to every single person in the DS Virgin team they were determined today he was the

50:44Sam I mean wow what a performance I mean how much pressure were you under for that race how relieved do you feel now
50:53I'm quite happy that that's over I'm really happy that it's over when he said last lap and I pulled a little bit of a gap to Seb I was saving and saving and saving in the second car so that the last lap I could have a bit of a gap but then I made a couple of mistakes on the last lap we was really struggling to slow the car down and

51:13how good does it feel to win the first race for DS Virgin
51:16feels amazing
51:17everybody in the team has worked really hard the DS boys have come in
51:19they've integrated really well with the Virgin boys that are already there and we win in our fourth outing so really good I mean there's a long way to go in the championship there's some great guys around me but it's a nice beginning part to the year
51:35the team was very elated when we saw you go through the finish line and what's going to be the focus now going forward on the car to maintain these results
51:46Nicky I'm not sure I mean it's it's difficult everything's homologated we can just fine-tune we learn a lot in Punta del Este
51:52if we continue to learn once we get the data back from here if there's anything else extra obviously we'll add it but it's very difficult at this stage to sort of improve drastically
52:02well it was an absolutely phenomenal performance well done
52:05what I like about Sam he takes us seriously you can tell him it hurts him when he's not going well
52:13you know he's probably not an easy person to be around in the team when it's not going well he takes it seriously this is his life and results like that I'm sure make it all worthwhile and it's good to see
52:23absolutely absolutely right I'm just I was going to make some gag about you not being an easy person to be around but that's for sure
52:30you're all right let's hear now from Sebastian Buemi second place what a drive
52:34Seb another outstanding drive you know from 18th to second did you ever think that was possible
52:41I was hoping for but to be honest no I've been a bit unlucky I would say at the start I went on the inside in turn 4 and honestly I was more than lucky not to crash into someone
52:53so I know great driving and then obviously safety car helped a lot towards the end it was very difficult because the battery overheated for everyone
53:02so we basically struggled to slow down the car the regen did not work so all of a sudden you were locking the front wheels you had to adapt and Sam did a fantastic job you know to keep me behind
53:13well you definitely kept the pressure on him and it kept us entertained for those last few laps
53:18yeah I mean I would have wished to win but at the end of the day you know I made already a mistake today so I have to make sure I get the most out of the car and out of the team
53:27and at least we go away with good points and three more than Lucas
53:32now during the safety car I mean what happened there looked like there was a bit of a confusion and you were trying to signal to Stefan Sarrazan
53:39yeah basically there is a 50 kph limit when you are on the red flag or with the full course yellow but not behind the safety car
53:47obviously the safety car means everyone needs to bunch up and he was driving 50 kph so we were not catching back you know
53:53so I was trying to make him understand that he had to you know release a bit limiter
53:57now we also know that you're expecting your very first baby anytime soon
54:01did that help encourage you to get to the end of this race
54:04well I was not thinking about that to be honest
54:06I think my wife would not be happy if she would hear that but no
54:09you know when you drive you drive you push and hopefully I'll make it on time you know to go back before you know it arrives

54:28Malaysia last year was a superb drive but
54:31I mean this was something else really good stuff from Buemi
54:34but couldn't quite get the victory

54:57but then I knew I had the opportunity
