00:00Here come the lights, it's Jerome D'Ambrosio on pole, Loic Duval alongside him, we go green, and it's a slow start from Duval, and what a good start that is from Sam Bird, is he up into second place on the run down to turn one, yes he is, the Virgin driver up into second, lockups further back, great start from Daniel Abt, and the two Abt cars go third and fourth as everyone tries to squeeze in through for the first time, so it's a slow start from Nico Frost, almost contact there, as they come through the left-hander, that was Bruno Senna and Antonio Felix da Costa, Robin Frains is up there too,
00:28but a great start from Jerome D'Ambrosio, as he manages to hold the lead of the race then, but it's Sam Bird with a rocket start, Dario Franchitti, up into second place, yeah, and I'd say John McVern at the other end of the grid shortcutted the chicane there, it didn't look like he had any advantage though, but yeah, great start there from Sam Bird into P2, and now it's going to settle down for a couple of laps before I'm sure we'll see the action picking up, guys have got to get themselves into a rhythm here, that first lap, just start letting everything flow, and then get on with the race,
00:57big cloud of the curbs there, taken by, it was Nelson Piquet Jr. as they came through that chicane, but the bad news for Sebastian Bluemi in fourth place is he didn't manage to make any places up, and he, in theory, has the quickest car out there, Antonio Felix da Costa is looking very close to Bruno Senna,
01:13as they come down towards the right-hander, Senna knows it, has to slightly cover the inside line, but this is a race that is going to be reasonably tough on your energy consumption, so you don't want to go lunging around in the first few laps, you need to be sensible about this.
01:28We've seen this before, haven't we, the race, the first couple of laps people get themselves settled in, and then they sort of be a little conservative with their energy consumption, and then when they've got more of an idea what's going on, and particularly when they do get into their second car, then the madness starts really.
01:42So, D'Ambrosio leads, Sam Bird second for DS Virgin, third is Loic Duval in the other Dragon car, then it's Sebastian Bluemi, then it's Degrassi ahead of Berton, so where have we lost Daniel Apt?
01:54No, Apt is there, but he's not showing up on the graphics at the moment, so that tower on the left is missing Daniel Apt, who is there in, well, he's in sixth place, so where it says Berton, that's Daniel Apt, where it says Apt, that is Berton, so I think those have switched around,
02:08and they come through now, the chicane, and again, it's so, how much of a stress is it when you know that this track punishes errors, we've had five drivers hit the wall, six if you count Degrassi, just today.
02:24Yeah, I mean, if you're in that sort of mindset, you're going to just take it a little easy to start with, and then you're going to get more and more comfortable, and then you start attacking, that's when the mistakes happen, that's when you can misjudge it, when you start getting closer and closer to that edge.
02:37You know, these guys are walking a tightrope, unless you're making a move to pass somebody, you're probably not going to be doing that on the first lap, and it was a rather tame first lap for Formula E there.
02:49Yeah, absolutely, so at the moment, Sebastian Buemi is in front of Lucas Degrassi there, my apologies, so I didn't really notice the relevance of that, but Buemi is up into fourth place, Degrassi is down into fifth, whereas they started in reverse position, so we missed that one down at the start,
03:04and it looked as though, if you started on the odd side of the grid, you had a much cleaner run, so maybe that's what did for Sebastian Buemi.
03:13Yeah, the track was clearly, you know, one side was a lot cleaner than the other, we've said the beaches there, look, you can see it over to the right, it's constantly, there's sand getting blown onto the track.
03:23Here comes Antonio Felix da Costa, up the inside of Bruno Senna into the hairpin, the Costa goes through, gains the place, and that is now eighth place for Antonio Felix da Costa, and now Robin Franks is a track
03:34attacking Senna too, yes, rear right, rear right problem for Bruno Senna, rear right problem for Bruno Senna, is it a puncture or suspension?
03:42No, it looks like a flap, has he hit the wall? I wonder if he's hit the wall at some point, or is it debris?
03:48We haven't seen punctures very often.
03:50Yeah, unless they're something that the guys have done, this is where it becomes an issue, because single file through this here, the chicane here.
03:56Yep, Senna gets out of the way nicely, it's a puncture, yeah, it's down a bit on the right rear, so Bruno Senna, after running up in eighth place,
04:04is having to come into the pits, and a miserable time for Senna, the Brazilian, across the line comes the race leader, Jerome D'Ambrosio, though.
04:12Eight-tenths of a second clear of Sam Bird, who in turn is six-tenths clear of Loic Duval, but he's got Sebastian Buemi right up behind him,
04:20and Duval's got to do the team job now, and do everything he can to keep Buemi behind him, surely.
04:25Yeah, that'd be one of the by-products of what he's trying to do, but, you know, D'Ambrosio's got a clear track,
04:31he can dictate where he carries speed, and really get into his own rhythm, because part of the energy-saving thing is,
04:37oh, here's a move from Buemi, down the inside.
04:39Buemi up the inside, and can he get through into the hairpin? Yes, he can, easy-peasy.
04:42Fabulous move, though, yeah, nice and easily done, but, yeah, so D'Ambrosio can get into his own rhythm,
04:47and that way save energy. It's easier to save when you're controlling your own pace.
04:51These guys are close behind other people. The pace has been dictated throughout the lap by the guy in front.
04:57Here is Senna, then, and, of course, they're going to change the tyre, then wheel him back out.
05:01I think this is the first tyre change we've ever had in Formula E.
05:05I think it is. I'd love to see the rim to see if he clattered the wall.
05:08It doesn't look like there's any damage on the bodywork, so, yeah, unusual.
05:12Got to be careful with these curbs, too, though, because sometimes the devices that hold them down,
05:17the fixings, the bolts, can come out and cause issues, but nobody else has seemed to have been affected by it yet.
05:23Buemi's all over Sam Bird. How much energy has he used here already?
05:27We'll have a look at some point, I'm sure. We're on board with Lucas Degrassi, who will, having seen Buemi pass Loic Duval,
05:33he will be desperate to try and get through. Here comes Sebastien Buemi on the run down into turn one.
05:36Can he get past Bird? No. Bird covers the inside line.
05:40All this is great news for Jerome D'Ambrosio, because it means he gets to build up an advantage up at the front,
05:44and it brings Duval, Degrassi, Apte and Proste back into play as well.
05:49Now, D'Ambrosio's not going to try and get away too far.
05:51It makes no sense for him to get away too far, because he's using energy to do that.
05:54He's going to try and manage that gap while using the minimum amount of energy.
05:58That's what you would do, because if there's a safety car or a full-course yellow,
06:02that, you know, the full-course yellow not so much, but certainly with a safety car, it's all over.
06:07You know, that gap he's built up is gone.
06:09And a pretty high probability of safety cars here. We had three here last year.
06:13Okay, we didn't have the full-course yellow system implemented.
06:16Here's a look at the start. What, keep an eye out for Degrassi and Buemi?
06:19So, Buemi just gets the better start and pulls past Degrassi on the run down towards the first corner,
06:24by the looks of things.
06:25Yeah, clean side of the grid, isn't it?
06:27Yeah.
06:27Now, with these new powertrains, they're producing even more torque.
06:31It's harder to put the power down without wheels spinning,
06:33and you're seeing the difference between a great and an average start.
06:37So, they very, just about made their way through.
06:40That's where I thought Senna and the Gurikar of Da Costa were going to come together.
06:44They didn't.
06:46And here's a look at it.
06:47They all filtered down into single file.
06:50And everyone went neatly through.
06:51Verne decided to just get out of it and go straight over,
06:54rather than getting involved in any incidents.
06:56Here's a look at it from the helicopter view.
07:00And they're going side by side on the run down.
07:03In fact, that side really got a cleaner start, didn't it?
07:06There was no contest, was there?
07:07And I guess we kind of knew it was coming,
07:09just with everything we've seen today with the track.
07:12You can even see it there.
07:12Look at how dirty it is offline, all that sand.
07:15Yep, absolutely.
07:16Here's the view on board with Lucas Degrassi.
07:18You can hear the wheels going, can't you?
07:20Yeah, we've got the second gear there.
07:21That's him now in top.
07:23Yep, absolutely.
07:24On the run down and then a bit of a lock up into turn one.
07:26Well, he almost went into the back of the Dragon car in front.
07:31Yeah, Degrassi was offline there,
07:32so as soon as he touched those brakes.
07:35Love his start, though, from Verde.
07:36No wheel spin.
07:38Just managed that very, very well.
07:40Yep, absolutely.
07:41And wasn't quite close enough to challenge D'Ambrosio
07:44on the run down towards turn one,
07:45but a good start from Sam Bird.
07:47But now he is in, well,
07:51we're going to see a replay from Robin Freintz here as well.
07:54Meanwhile, Sebastian Buemi's up to second place
07:56and gone purple in sector one and two.
07:58So he's closing in on D'Ambrosio.
07:59This is a view from Freintz,
08:01who comes down towards the chicane.
08:02He gets a reasonable start.
08:03That's Antonio Felix da Costa up in front of him.
08:05Avoid all the locking tyres and smoke.
08:08Tries to go around the outside,
08:09but a slow-moving centre.
08:10Now look at this.
08:11Look at these two through this left kink.
08:13Oh, just enough room.
08:15And look at Sebastian Buemi now,
08:16right on the back of Jerome D'Ambrosio.
08:18He's got past Sam Bird.
08:20He's pulled out an advantage.
08:21He's set the fastest lap of the race
08:22and he's now right on the back of Jerome D'Ambrosio,
08:25despite having started in fifth place on the grid
08:28and hasn't used that much more energy than anyone else.
08:30So Sebastian Buemi in the zone
08:32after making a bit of a mess, frankly, of qualifying.
08:38He's now feeling very, very focused.
08:39Duval's up into third place as well.
08:41So Duval is past Sam Bird too.
08:43So dragging her up into first and third position.
08:47So here we go then.
08:48Here's a look at Buemi.
08:50Bird tried to defend,
08:52but didn't quite close the door enough.
08:54It wasn't on really.
08:55And Degrassi then attacked
08:56and Degrassi's lost out to Daniel Apt as well.
08:59So while we were at the replays,
09:01the Apt cars have swapped positions.
09:03Have they swapped back?
09:04Yeah, they have.
09:05So Apt has let Degrassi back through.
09:07So here's the order on the left-hand tower then.
09:09D'Ambrosio, Buemi, Duval, Bird, Degrassi,
09:13and Apt.
09:14And that lap time from Sebastian Buemi
09:15is one and a half seconds quicker than anyone else.
09:18He's had an up and down day, hasn't he?
09:20He crashed the car this morning,
09:22properly crashed it.
09:23Made a bit of a mess of qualifying there.
09:25And now he's coming up through the field
09:27and he's made it difficult for himself.
09:28He looks very, very strong right now.
09:30Here comes Sebastian Buemi on the attack down into turn one.
09:34Not close enough.
09:35D'Ambrosio has got his mirrors
09:36absolutely full of the Swiss driver
09:38who missed out on the Formula E championship
09:40in season one by just one point.
09:42He is desperate to make amends for that this year.
09:45And, you know, you could see right now,
09:46oh, the Renault E-Dam's car is this and it's that,
09:48but his teammates only seven.
09:49So he's clearly doing something very, very special
09:52inside that car for the way he's driving it.
09:54Nico Prost is actually being held up
09:57behind Daniel Apt at the moment.
09:59And as a result, that's managing to gap them
10:01back to Lucas Degrassi.
10:02So that's Bruno Senna, I imagine,
10:12that they are approaching out there
10:14because he is running at the back of the field
10:16at the moment.
10:17He's hoping for a safety car right now.
10:19He needs that to get back in contention here.
10:22There he goes through the shot.
10:24As soon as Senna goes a lap down to these two,
10:26then it's pretty much all over for him.
10:28So, as you say, he'll be hoping to get through.
10:30Prost has got past Daniel Apt.
10:31Here comes Sebastian Buemi
10:33through on Jerome D'Ambrosio.
10:35Buemi leads into turn 17
10:37and the Renault car is now into the lead
10:39of round three of the Formula E championship.
10:42And you would say, oh, he caught him napping,
10:43but he didn't.
10:43It's just that Jerome is on that tightrope
10:46of how much energy does he save?
10:47How early does he lift him close?
10:48And there he is, coming over the radio
10:52to give some feedback to the team.
10:54It's really important to give each turn
10:57the console to the tour.
10:59So...
10:59They bounce over the curves.
11:07This is then the reshuffle we've seen back here.
11:09Duval is now in third,
11:11with Sam Bird right up behind him
11:12and Lucas Di Grassi behind him.
11:14Nico Prost, you'll just about to see,
11:16to come through that chicane.
11:17He's past Daniel Apt and up into seventh position.
11:19But he's 3.7 seconds behind.
11:21And Da Costa's gone past Apt as well.
11:23So I wonder if Daniel Apt's in a bit of trouble here.
11:25He's dropped all the way down to eighth position.
11:28We're on board with Lucas Di Grassi.
11:30He's running in fifth place,
11:31trying to get past Sam Bird up in front of him.
11:33And Sam wasn't too sure about their energy consumption,
11:36was he, and keeping the pace up
11:37when we talked to him on the grid there.
11:39But he's definitely having a good go of it here.
11:42But yeah, Prost's got a really push here
11:44because he's a fair bit behind 3.7 seconds.
11:46There he is, just coming into shot.
11:48Now he's in clear air.
11:49We'll see what lap times he's got
11:51compared to Sebastian Bremi.
11:52And we'll see if it's the car
11:53or if it's the driver.
11:56On the brakes, into the right-hander.
11:58And then the left at 18, up towards the 19,
12:03and then tight 20.
12:05And that brings them out onto the start,
12:06finish straight once again.
12:08Out is Lucas Di Grassi going to be able to get through.
12:10He's right under the rear wing of Sam Bird.
12:12On the run down towards turn one,
12:14he's closer than he's been so far.
12:15Just two-tenths of a second between them.
12:17But into turn one, it's just so tricky
12:19because of that kink towards the chicane.
12:22As Lucas Di Grassi battles with Sam Bird.
12:25And they're all behind Loic Duval.
12:28The winners of the Fan Boost, meanwhile,
12:30are Jean-Erik Verne, Stefan Sarazan,
12:32and Sam Bird.
12:33So Jean-Erik Verne, Stefan Sarazan,
12:36and Sam Bird.
12:36And that'll be a welcome relief to Bird,
12:38but he can't use it in this first run.
12:41And he'll be able to get through the lap.
12:44And he'll be yellow at turn 19 here.
12:47So through the hairpin they come.
12:50Duval in third, then Bird, then Di Grassi.
12:53As you say, a yellow at turn 19,
12:55double yellow at turn 19.
12:57So what has happened at 19?
12:58Oh, and a spin.
12:59And that is Nathaniel Berton.
13:03And Berton, they came together.
13:06Well, they didn't come together,
13:07but Berton held up Verne in free practice.
13:10Sorry, in qualifying,
13:12and I wonder if that was a bit of a payback.
13:14Jean-Erik Verne has had the most bizarre day.
13:16At one point he was walking down the track.
13:17Oh, there we go.
13:18Oh, on the inside goes Di Grassi.
13:20Past Sam Bird.
13:21Yep.
13:22He caught him there.
13:23Just coming into the last corner there.
13:26He's got past him in turn 17, 18 there.
13:30On board we go with Bird.
13:31Can he try and fight back?
13:32Across the line they come.
13:33But when he's not pulled rapidly away
13:35from Jerome D'Ambrosio,
13:36just keeping the gap at 1.1 seconds,
13:38but why would you, I guess?
13:40Again, it doesn't make sense
13:42to put too far away there.
13:44So now it'll be very interesting
13:46to see what he can do.
13:49We've got human telemetry here
13:50on Hans-Jergen app.
13:51That's his heart rate at the moment.
13:53It's just over 120 beats per minute.
13:55It goes down a bit
13:56when he's not watching the telly.
13:57And fantastic stuff from Hans-Jergen.
14:01Hopefully in the future
14:02we're going to be putting that
14:03on the drivers as well,
14:04which will be fantastic to see.
14:06But D'Ambrosio was actually
14:07slightly quicker than Buemi
14:08on that previous tour.
14:10And they're still using
14:10the same amount of energy.
14:13So that's interesting.
14:13Buemi and D'Ambrosio
14:14both on 38%.
14:16Here's a look at the replay
14:18of how Lucas Degrassi
14:18managed to get past.
14:20Just a little bit.
14:21Oh, he just about made the move.
14:23Got a bit twitchy there, didn't it?
14:24Yeah, just a bit.
14:25You know, it was just, again,
14:26that lifting, coasting from Samus.
14:27How much can you lift and coast
14:28without letting the guy
14:29open in the gap
14:30to let him do that?
14:32And Degrassi just took
14:33full advantage there.
14:34Lovely move.
14:35Made it stick.
14:37And there we go.
14:38Great stuff.
14:39Thank you very much to Nina
14:41on Twitter,
14:42who is translating
14:43the Renault E-Dams messages for us.
14:46And apparently that one
14:47we heard earlier on from Buemi
14:48said it's very important
14:49to give us the consumption.
14:51We'll try and go for 17 laps.
14:53So lap 17 is when
14:55Sebastian Buemi
14:56is planning on coming in.
14:57Merci bien, Nina.
14:58Great to have some assistance
15:00in the French department.
15:01Good there, Jack.
15:02Yeah, thanks, Nina.
15:03Because we're crap out here, aren't we?
15:06Lap 12 with 33.
15:07We can just about muddle by
15:09with the Spanish here
15:10in South America.
15:11Cross has not gained anything
15:12on that group in front now,
15:14which is, you know,
15:15Sam Bird is now in fit.
15:16He hasn't really caught anything.
15:17Still three and a half seconds back.
15:19So it's going to be tough
15:20to close that gap
15:22without sort of putting himself
15:23in a problem
15:25with energy consumption.
15:26Yeah, absolutely.
15:27And Jerome D'Ambrosio
15:28has just set his personal best.
15:30sector one
15:31of the race so far.
15:32Lap 12 with 33.
15:33So as I say,
15:34we're expecting around
15:35lap 17
15:36to have the pit stops
15:37on board with Lucas Degrassi.
15:39Daniel Apt has used
15:40a lot of energy
15:41despite being down
15:42in eighth place.
15:42so interesting one for Apt.
15:46And look how much
15:47Turvey and Piquet
15:48are differentiating.
15:49So maybe Piquet
15:50is trying to go
15:51a lap longer.
15:52He is only a second
15:53behind Turvey though,
15:54nevertheless.
15:55You can hear
15:55lifting goes over there.
15:57Oh, yellow flag.
15:57Who's in the wall?
15:59We'll try and find out
16:00who that is for you.
16:02And I think it's Oliver
16:03at Senna.
16:04Bruno Senna.
16:05Bruno Senna off
16:06at turn 17.
16:07And he was a lap down anyway.
16:09Mahindra Day
16:10goes from bad to worse.
16:11These poor guys
16:12are not getting a break.
16:12Just like,
16:13oh,
16:13pulled in front of Piquet.
16:15Yeah.
16:15That will not endear him
16:16to Nelson.
16:18That's because it's
16:18my front is
16:20we're losing
16:21getting massive toe changes.
16:26Sounds like he has
16:27brushed the wall somewhere.
16:29And that led to the puncture
16:30and has led to also
16:31suspension damage.
16:32Here comes Bruno Senna
16:33in the red and white
16:34Mahindra car
16:34right in front of
16:35the race leaders.
16:37So that could have
16:38been very interesting.
16:40Continue with this car guys
16:41because the right front
16:42is fighting
16:42with that left front
16:43at the moment.
16:44I cannot take any
16:44right-handers properly.
16:46Okay.
16:47We're going to see
16:48Senna in then
16:48at the end of this lap.
16:49He'll swap over
16:50to his other car
16:51and try and make
16:52that one last.
16:54He's clearly hit
16:54the wall somewhere.
16:55Which has probably
16:56caused all his
16:57issues there.
16:58On board with the Grassy.
16:59He's now trying to get
17:00past Loic Duval
17:00and take third position
17:02away from the French
17:04driver with the
17:05Wissett Abt
17:08powertrain.
17:09You can really hear
17:10when he's lifted
17:10and coasting.
17:11You'll hear it here
17:12in a second.
17:13And there's the coast
17:15and the regen happening.
17:17He's getting held up
17:18now by the Dragon
17:18car here a little bit.
17:20But if he held him
17:21up in the right spot
17:21it's okay because
17:22he can't get past
17:23anyway.
17:23but the trick is to be
17:25quick at this part now
17:26so he can't pass
17:27into turn one.
17:28De Grassy has a slight
17:30little bit more energy
17:31than Loic Duval
17:32as they come across
17:32the line and they're
17:33out of the third place.
17:34Not enough to go a lap
17:34longer but maybe
17:35enough to make a move
17:37at some point
17:38with that little bit
17:39of extra pace.
17:40Sandbird's still
17:41sticking in there
17:42and they're still
17:43well clear of Nico
17:43Prost.
17:442.8 seconds clear of
17:45Prost who's a couple
17:46of tenths a lap
17:47quicker but he's
17:48starting to close the
17:49gap now.
17:50He's absolutely
17:50starting to get there
17:52but yeah you know
17:54De Grassy's going to
17:55have to play the long
17:56game here but he is
17:56going to have to get
17:57past Loic Duval
17:58to get up there
18:00with his target's
18:02Buemi isn't it
18:02they're in the
18:03championship fight
18:03right now but he's
18:05definitely getting
18:05held up at certain
18:06points in the track.
18:08That 14 of 33
18:10so we are approaching
18:12the halfway point
18:13a couple of laps away
18:14and that's when we
18:15will start to see
18:15the pitch stop windows
18:16open.
18:17Nerves there in the
18:19Audi Sport
18:20sorry the
18:21apt
18:22Schaffler
18:23garage
18:24and a big slide
18:25for De Grassy
18:25there.
18:26Look how positive
18:27his car is.
18:28One of the ways to
18:29save energy is to
18:29really get the car
18:30turning very very
18:31well if you can
18:32handle the oversteer
18:33that comes with it
18:33and Lucas has
18:35clearly done a good
18:35job of that here.
18:37Certainly is
18:37and he is desperate
18:38to try and get past
18:39Loic Duval in front
18:41of him.
18:41Where will he pick
18:42the point?
18:43That's the question.
18:44Picks a wide line
18:45into the final corner
18:46absolutely nose to tail
18:47but this new turn one
18:48is pretty tricky
18:49to overtake on
18:50because you can
18:51defend it
18:52quite easily.
18:53Yeah it's really the
18:53kink before it isn't it
18:54you're almost blocking
18:56the line just by
18:56taking the normal
18:58racing line there.
19:00Again De Grassy
19:01slightly quicker.
19:03Buemi is starting to
19:04extend his gap now
19:05so he's up to
19:053.3 seconds clear
19:07again 1.3 seconds
19:09quicker than
19:10Jerome D'Ambrosio
19:10on that previous tour.
19:12Buemi is absolutely
19:13in the zone at the
19:14moment.
19:15And Bird still
19:16running strongly
19:17in fifth place
19:17and as ever
19:18you never know
19:19what's going to
19:19happen in the
19:20remainder of a
19:20Formula E race.
19:22Again it just looks
19:22like everybody's been
19:23a little bit
19:23conservative right now
19:24compared to
19:25certainly what we
19:25saw earlier today
19:26when they were
19:27getting very greedy
19:27over the chicane
19:28curbs and a lot of
19:29people were paying
19:30the price for it.
19:31We haven't got to
19:31that point yet
19:32in the race.
19:34Yeah as we often
19:34see the first
19:35stint of Formula E
19:37can be quite
19:37you know nose to
19:38tail and then
19:39in the second
19:40is where it
19:41matters.
19:41At the moment
19:42if you make up a
19:43place in the
19:44grand scheme of
19:44things it doesn't
19:46matter that much
19:47and has Duval
19:48just taken out
19:49the bollard
19:50and maybe given
19:51him some damage
19:51and up in front
19:52it's very close
19:54between two of
19:55the cars.
19:56I think he's okay
19:56because if he did
19:57hit the bollard
19:58it was with the
19:58side of the car
19:58but he had a
19:59massive chunk of
20:00oversteer right
20:00in the middle of
20:01that chicane.
20:01We've seen that
20:02fight people
20:03all day.
20:04This is Nathaniel
20:05Berton then
20:06who's a backmarker
20:06that's who
20:07Jerome D'Ambrosio
20:08was having to deal
20:09with.
20:09Berton's going to
20:10move out of the
20:10way here
20:11hopefully on the
20:12run down towards
20:12turn one
20:13although he's
20:15just a little
20:16too far in front
20:17to move out
20:17of the way
20:17comfortably.
20:18This is going
20:19to get a bit
20:19tricky for them
20:20now because this
20:21sequence of corners
20:22is really tight
20:23and he has to
20:23dart late in the
20:24day.
20:25Degrassi is he
20:25going to get
20:25through?
20:26Yes just about.
20:27But that was a bit
20:28hard in mouth.
20:28He needs a bit of a
20:30lesson in how to let
20:31cars bump him through
20:32because he's done
20:33today earlier
20:34John Eric Verne hit him
20:35because he held him up
20:35in qualifying.
20:36He didn't do the leaders
20:37any favours there at all
20:38but he did get out of the
20:39way now for Sam Bird.
20:40And Chris Gorn has come
20:43over the radio to
20:43Robin Freitz and told
20:44him that he's got to
20:45save energy mate.
20:46That's from the
20:47Twitter account from
20:48Amlin Andretti.
20:51So good information
20:52there.
20:52Not a message you
20:53want.
20:54No exactly.
20:54Freitz down in
20:55ninth place at the
20:55moment as we go
20:57on board then with
20:58Loic Duval in front
20:59on the left-hand
21:00side.
21:00Jerome Lucas Degrassi
21:01chasing him on the
21:02right-hand side and
21:03they've got about
21:04similar energy levels
21:05left so this they're
21:06about to start they're
21:07all about to start I
21:08think their final lap
21:09before the pit stops
21:10it seems.
21:12As they come up and
21:14there's the look from
21:14Degrassi.
21:15No.
21:16Duval has it covered.
21:17This is the point if
21:18you can make a cheeky
21:18pass and just get ahead
21:20of him you know
21:21leading into that pit
21:22stop segment you're
21:23going to take it just
21:24to set yourself up for
21:25the second stage of
21:26the race.
21:26He's so close.
21:28Yeah.
21:28They're all ticking over
21:29to 7% just as they
21:30come across the line
21:31now is Duval going to
21:32go defensive on the
21:33run down to turn one
21:34I think he is.
21:35Oh Degrassi getting
21:36close getting close.
21:38I think the move is
21:40into this next chicane
21:41isn't it if you can
21:41if you can get close
21:42enough and catch a
21:43nap in just a little
21:44bit but it's going to
21:45be tough.
21:47Duval's got 1% less to
21:49use than Lucas
21:51Degrassi.
21:52Daniel Lapte has
21:52pitted.
21:53We've already got some
21:53pit stoppers then
21:55coming in.
21:55Apt maybe with an
21:57early stop.
21:57We've also got
21:58Sarazan in and
21:59Oliver Turvey so
22:00they're all coming in
22:02from lower down in
22:03the top 10.
22:04Daniel Lapte came in
22:05from 8th position.
22:07Yeah this is going to
22:08make their second
22:09stint without a
22:10safety car.
22:11A little interesting.
22:13Lucas has kind of
22:13backed off just a
22:15little bit from
22:16Loic Duval.
22:17Duval got nicely
22:18sideways through there.
22:19So Buemi is coming
22:20in this lap clearly
22:21because he's got not
22:22much percentage left.
22:23Oli Rowland we might
22:24see staying out for an
22:25extra lap because he's
22:26got 11% of energy
22:27remaining.
22:28Maybe two.
22:29Nathaniel Berton.
22:31Roland though is
22:325 seconds off to
22:33Silvestro who's 20
22:34seconds off the rest
22:35of the pack.
22:36Is that all the
22:36Rowland coming in?
22:37Anyway.
22:37It might have been.
22:38Yeah.
22:38It might have been.
22:40No no it's
22:40Senna.
22:41Senna coming in and
22:42Roland moves up a
22:43position then.
22:44On board with Degrassi.
22:45Into the pits we go
22:45then on lap 17 of 33.
22:47Closed that gap as
22:48much as he can.
22:49Now we saw that the
22:50Dragon guys had a bad
22:51pit stop in Malaysia
22:52that really cost them.
22:53And look at this.
22:54Oh they're getting on
22:54the brakes with a pit
22:55lane speed limit of Degrassi
22:56almost going into the
22:57back there.
22:58And this is going to be
22:59interesting because the
22:59Dragon cars are nose to
23:00tail and it's going to be
23:02very very tight on pit
23:04exit here.
23:05This is when the
23:06mechanics need to get a
23:07clear view of their car
23:08where it's the first or the
23:09second Dragon car.
23:10Here's our race leader
23:10Sebastian Buemi into the pits.
23:13Degrassi in as well the
23:15championship leader.
23:16This is where things could get
23:18interesting.
23:19The one thing you don't want
23:20is to be leaving your garage
23:21as somebody else.
23:22A back marker is coming into
23:23theirs and it gets not only
23:25interesting but can cost you a
23:27lot of time.
23:27But you've also got to do a safe
23:29release.
23:29That's the other major issue.
23:3159 seconds is the minimum pit
23:33stop time by the way.
23:34So that's why you see them
23:35waiting.
23:36And away goes Sebastian Buemi
23:40out of the pit box and he
23:42rejoins the lead of the race.
23:43Here comes Degrassi then.
23:45And oh it's going to be close
23:46and Degrassi's got through.
23:47Degrassi's got past the
23:48Dragon cars I think.
23:50We'll wait and see.
23:50Out goes Sebastian Buemi.
23:52Who's next?
23:53It's Degrassi.
23:54Degrassi's in second place in
23:56front of the two Dragon cars.
23:58And getting involved in there is
23:59Sam Bird so Bird has made up a
24:01position as well.
24:03So the Dragon boys lost places
24:04again on the pit stop.
24:05Yeah.
24:06So D'Ambrosio it is who's still
24:09in third position in front of
24:10third who's up to fourth and
24:11Duval drops down to fifth.
24:12So Buemi now leads effectively.
24:15Roland is still out there.
24:17Degrassi in second.
24:18D'Ambrosio in third.
24:20So now we'll see what energy
24:22management we can have until
24:24the end of the race.
24:26You want to attack don't you?
24:28Yeah.
24:28At this point you're thinking
24:29all right I've saved enough
24:31let's get after it.
24:33That's the thing that even
24:33when they're saving energy at the
24:35beginning of the race they're
24:35still going as quickly as
24:36kind of got an issue here.
24:38Oh and there's that slowing
24:39Sam Bird up the inside goes
24:40into turn 13.
24:41Has Sam Bird got a problem
24:42or was he just lifting
24:43coasting but the Dragon is
24:45through.
24:45He's got to have a problem.
24:46I'll give you instruction.
24:48Yes try and do a reset I'll
24:49give you instruction.
24:50So Sam Bird in trouble the car
24:52is coasting around the DS Virgin
24:54driver is having to grind to a
24:56halt.
24:56T-0.
24:58Oh right in the middle
24:58is track 2.
24:59They've got to throw a
25:00safety car here.
25:02Or a full course yellow at the
25:04very least.
25:04Tried nothing.
25:07Frustration for Sam Bird the
25:08minimum pit stop time was
25:0959 seconds.
25:13And Lucas Degrassi did it in
25:1459 seconds.
25:16D'Ambrosio did it in 1 minute 1.
25:18Duval did it in 1 minute 2.
25:19You can't afford that.
25:20You've got to be dead on.
25:21You've got to be dead on the
25:22money in the pit stops.
25:23It's so competitive here.
25:25That's not.
25:26There's a yellow flag there.
25:28Double yellow.
25:28But he's parked in the middle
25:30of the track.
25:30And he's not looking like
25:32he's going anywhere.
25:33So Buemi is leading this race.
25:35Degrassi is in 2nd.
25:36We've got Oliver Rowland into
25:37the pit.
25:37So the yellow flag's gone in.
25:39So he must have got going now
25:40Sam Bird.
25:40But he is tumbling down the
25:42order.
25:43He's stopping and starting as
25:44he makes his way around the
25:45circuit.
25:46So Buemi leads Degrassi 2nd.
25:48Ambrosio 3rd.
25:48Then it's Duval 4th.
25:50Prost in 5th.
25:53And he's been told to pull
25:54over somewhere safe now and
25:56try the restart procedure.
25:57So there is Jay Penske, the
25:59boss of the Dragon team.
26:00And he's seen his cars go from
26:012nd and 3rd down to 3rd and
26:044th.
26:05Still a solid performance.
26:08And there is Sam Bird.
26:09And he's pulled.
26:10Is that the start finish straight?
26:11That's the start finish.
26:11That's not a safe place, is it?
26:13Really?
26:13I mean, he's off the racing line
26:14because he's on the inside of
26:15that final corner.
26:16So it could be worse.
26:18But if that's the end of his
26:19race, we will surely see a
26:22safety car unless he can get
26:24going again.
26:24Going back to the Dragon thing,
26:26I don't want to beat on it too
26:27much.
26:27But he cannot afford to be losing
26:30those type of places.
26:31And I'm sure those guys will be
26:32going back up until the next
26:34race and drilling on pit stops
26:35to get that right.
26:37Because he just cannot be giving
26:38away time like that.
26:39Loic Duval has just set the
26:40fastest lap of the race so far.
26:421 minute 18.2 to close in on
26:45the back of his teammate
26:46Jerome D'Ambrosio.
26:47So they are now running line of
26:49stern in 3rd and 4th.
26:50Now we saw them getting a little
26:52old birds out.
26:53Birds out.
26:54So I think we may have safety
26:57car conditions here and the DS
26:59Virgin team have got their head
27:00in their hands.
27:01We've seen that look already
27:01from that guy today.
27:03Yep.
27:05That's a shame because they had
27:06a tough, a really tough job
27:07getting that car rebuilt.
27:09So a real shame and Sam Bird
27:11thumps the wall and he is
27:13absolutely frustrated with that
27:16one as you would happen.
27:20And there is the full course
27:20yellow.
27:23Full course yellow in 10 seconds.
27:25I think there were some cars
27:25already going slowly.
27:277, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
27:34Full course yellow.
27:35Full course yellow.
27:36So there is the full course
27:37yellow.
27:38Yep.
27:38So that's the theory.
27:39Yep.
27:41A question whether anyone's
27:42used their fan boost yet.
27:43I don't think they have.
27:45Sam Bird won't be using his.
27:49This is Daniel Act and Oliver
27:51Turvey.
27:51Well, Emi sounds a lot calmer
27:53now that it's a full course
27:54yellow and not a safety car.
27:56But look how close the gap is.
27:57That's a lot of control.
27:58You put the signs out.
28:01And me, I'm already slowing down
28:02because I thought you already
28:03came with the countdown.
28:04I just lost at least five seconds
28:06on Degrassi.
28:07OK, so that's what's...
28:08So that's...
28:09We heard him going full course
28:10yellow, full course yellow,
28:11thinking, is it a full course
28:13yellow?
28:13The announcement hadn't come
28:15from Oliver Gradovsky.
28:16We heard that.
28:17He thought it already was a full
28:18course yellow and got on the
28:19brakes.
28:20So it might as well have been a
28:21safety car.
28:21Yeah, for him, yeah, absolutely.
28:23I misread that one, but he's still
28:26got the pace to go, hasn't he?
28:27Yeah.
28:28Absolutely.
28:29And this is going to help him
28:29with energy management.
28:30So we're going to see them really,
28:31I would say, turn it up and do
28:32less lifting and coasting towards
28:34the end of this race here.
28:36Senna's got between Degrassi in
28:38second and Jerome D'Ambrosio in
28:40third.
28:40He's a lap down Senna there.
28:42This also gives everybody an
28:43opportunity a little bit to save
28:46energy.
28:48Obviously, you've still got...
28:49If you're going around slowly,
28:50you're still going to have a long
28:51way to go in the race, but it
28:53gives you a chance.
28:54There's nose to tail the two
28:55dragon cars then.
28:57We were talking about them in
28:58China, weren't we?
28:58How close they came at that
28:59last corner.
29:00Yeah.
29:01Yeah, exactly.
29:02It's close your eyes stuff.
29:03So hopefully they don't do that
29:04today.
29:05So full course yellow means that
29:06everyone has to go at 50
29:08kilometres an hour when
29:09they're out on the circuit.
29:10So they map it like that.
29:12And it means instead of having a
29:14safety car and then waiting for
29:15the field to be bunched up and
29:16then everybody waiting for the
29:18safety car to go in and all that
29:20malarkey and also a safety car
29:22will bunch the field back up and
29:23if you have a big lead, you're
29:25going to lose that.
29:26Instead, we have a full course
29:27yellow because the cars will
29:28pootle around for a bit behind
29:3150 kilometres an hour until they
29:32can move the car.
29:33This is race control.
29:34This is race control.
29:36The end of the full course yellow
29:37will be in 10 seconds and
29:39gentlemen, here's your countdown.
29:4010, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
29:49Green flag, green flag, green flag.
29:51We're racing again in Punta del Este.
29:54We've got 13 laps to go.
29:55Laps 21 of 33.
29:57And here are our two race leaders.
29:59Sebastien Buemi, second in the
30:00championship.
30:01De Grassi, leading the championship.
30:03They're racing down now for the
30:05final 13 laps.
30:06Buemi has looked impressive, but
30:08De Grassi has had good pace this
30:10season, but hasn't had the chance
30:11to show it.
30:12Now we'll find out.
30:13Look how close the two Dragon
30:14cars are on the run down into
30:1519, and they've got Nico Prost
30:17right up behind them.
30:18So Prost finally coming into his
30:20own as they come into the final
30:21corner.
30:22And you would say De Grassi is
30:23catching Sebastien Buemi, though.
30:24De Grassi has got him in his
30:26sights, and he would do everything
30:27he can not to let that Renault
30:29Edam's car away from him.
30:30Yeah, absolutely.
30:31So the green flag's waving.
30:33It's Prost versus, sorry, Buemi
30:35versus De Grassi up front.
30:36Then it's the Dragons against the
30:39Nico Prost Renault Edam's car.
30:42Those Dragon boys are close.
30:43I'm sure Jay Penske's on the
30:44radio pleading with them to just
30:46not take each other out.
30:48Well, that was the first thing
30:49he said after Jean-Paul Drio
30:51looking nervous there.
30:52That was the first thing he said
30:53after qualifying, wasn't it?
30:55Don't take each other out.
30:56Not even, oh, well, no, no,
30:57Paul, who was like, no, no,
30:58don't take each other out.
30:59He's a team owner.
31:00That's what they do.
31:01Here they are.
31:04D'Ambrosio ahead of Duval
31:06with Nico Prost behind
31:08in fifth position.
31:10Swing through the chicane.
31:14Nico Prost is still struggling a little bit,
31:16isn't he?
31:16An outright piece.
31:17Yeah.
31:18Yeah, he is.
31:19Jerome D'Ambrosio's just at the fastest
31:20middle sector of anyone on that lap,
31:22so he's trying to push to get away
31:24from his teammate Loic Duval.
31:26Only half a second between
31:27the race leaders as they crossed the line
31:29last time.
31:29It might even be even closer.
31:31Look at them as they come
31:32towards the final turn.
31:33That's still the Dragon Boys
31:34battling over third position.
31:36And look, we've got 75%
31:37of energy remaining, so
31:38energy management is not going to be
31:41as much of an issue now.
31:42You'll still have to do some.
31:43You can't just go flat out.
31:45One, nine, eight, two.
31:48That's Jerome D'Ambrosio
31:49giving feedback.
31:50Here's our race leaders,
31:51Buemi and Degrassi,
31:53separated by less than half a second.
31:54Two tens quicker that lap,
31:55Degrassi was, so it's,
31:56it's all,
31:58all to play for here.
32:00Absolutely.
32:00What a fantastic duel
32:02we are about to see.
32:05Eleven laps remaining
32:06here in the third round
32:07of the FIA Formula E Championship.
32:10This is the bit
32:11where if you're Buemi,
32:12you want to look in your mirrors
32:13just as you exit the corner here
32:14because that's when
32:15the gap is as big as
32:16because you accelerate out.
32:17I think it was McNish
32:18taught me that.
32:18You accelerate out,
32:19you look in the mirror,
32:20the gap's bigger.
32:20You don't look as you break
32:22because the concertina
32:23closes it up.
32:25So you always want to make
32:25the gap look bigger
32:27for your psychological well-being.
32:30So the reason that
32:31Degrassi gained so much
32:33on Sebastian Buemi
32:33was that Buemi
32:34thought the full course yellow
32:35was out before
32:36we had the countdown
32:37from the race director.
32:39But,
32:39and so he backed off
32:41before he needed to.
32:42But,
32:43he is now starting
32:43to just gap Degrassi
32:45a little bit
32:46in that middle sector,
32:47took a couple of tenths
32:48out of Degrassi
32:48and a couple in sector one too.
32:50So,
32:51sector one as well.
32:52So now Buemi
32:53is starting to
32:54eek that gap back up.
32:55And Buemi's got the pace
32:56to do it.
32:57He's just got to be calm
32:58and not make a mistake.
32:59We've seen him make
33:00some mistakes recently.
33:01As long as he's calm,
33:02the pace is in the car
33:03and the pace is in him
33:04to get the job done today.
33:05We've seen him make two today.
33:07Does that play on your mind
33:08if you think,
33:09I've been in the wall once
33:10and then I've wrecked
33:11my pole lap once.
33:13Can I do this?
33:14No,
33:14you know,
33:15it depends on mentally strong you are
33:16and that's the difference sometimes.
33:17You've got to have that
33:18as Jackie Stewart said,
33:19mind management
33:19is so important
33:20at this level
33:21racing is
33:23as much a mental sport
33:25as a physical sport.
33:26Maybe more so.
33:27As most sports are,
33:28you know,
33:28golf,
33:28all those things.
33:29Now,
33:29Robin Fraintz has a lot more energy
33:31than everyone else.
33:32You can see him there
33:32in 12th place.
33:33So,
33:33he is going to be able
33:35to go quicker
33:35than anyone else out there.
33:37But,
33:37he's,
33:38he's down in 12th position
33:41and is a lot further back
33:43from Jean-Erik Verne.
33:44So,
33:44he's lost,
33:45he's 11 seconds
33:46off the pack in front of him.
33:47So,
33:47he's lost time somewhere,
33:49Robin Fraintz.
33:50Can't quite figure out where.
33:51And Oli Rowan's not using
33:52really any energy
33:54compared to the rest,
33:54but it's like,
33:55if he used a bit more,
33:56he might be able to get
33:57a little closer up there.
33:58It's,
33:58I don't know,
33:59I'm sure that the engineers
34:01are on the radio
34:01giving him a bit of instruction.
34:03Big lock up there
34:04from Boemi.
34:05He did the fastest lap
34:06of the race
34:07on that previous tour,
34:08a 1 minute 17.4
34:10and has then set
34:11the fastest first sector
34:12of anyone
34:12on this lap so far
34:14and has pulled out
34:15so far
34:16another 6 tenths of a second.
34:17We'll see what it is
34:17as they cross the line.
34:18It was 1.4 seconds,
34:20it's now 1.3.
34:21So Degrassi
34:22doing a very good
34:24final sector there.
34:26This is back in.
34:26This is where Boemi's
34:27got to sort of
34:28watch himself
34:30because he's got
34:31that tendency
34:31to keep pushing,
34:32keep pushing
34:33and rather than
34:33just beat them,
34:34he wants to just
34:35annihilate everybody
34:36and it's not necessary.
34:38It looks great
34:39and everything
34:39but too many times
34:41he's made mistakes
34:42trying to do that.
34:42Oliver Turvey
34:43is running in
34:448th position
34:45at the moment
34:46with Nelson Piquet
34:47in 9th position
34:48for next EV
34:49Team China Racing
34:50but as Jean-Erik Verne
34:52uses his fan boost
34:53he's right behind
34:54Stefan Sarazan
34:55so Verne trying
34:56to attack Sarazan
34:57for what is
34:5810th position
34:58and the final
34:59point scoring position
35:00but Turvey
35:02is in 8th place
35:03at the moment
35:03but
35:04Maie is under investigation
35:06because his
35:07pit stop time
35:08was too short.
35:09There's Hans-Jergen
35:10App at 126 BPM
35:11so he's been pretty
35:12consistent
35:13at 126
35:14throughout the race
35:16so far.
35:16Pretty calm
35:17so far
35:17which is surprising
35:18for a team manager.
35:21I know for now
35:21when I've been doing
35:22the IndyCar stuff
35:22with a Ganassi team
35:23my pulse has been
35:24a lot higher than that
35:25and multiples of what
35:26it was when I was
35:27driving the car.
35:28It's a lot more stressful
35:28to be sitting in the pit
35:30than actually driving
35:30the car I always find.
35:31And you're unfit now
35:32as well presumably.
35:33Yeah, definitely.
35:34That's because of the diet
35:35that you've introduced me to, Jack.
35:38So there is the
35:39Renault Edam's team
35:40watching on
35:42looking a little bit nervy.
35:44Vern has got past Sarazan
35:45so he used the fan boost
35:46to get past Sarazan
35:47and is up into
35:4810th position
35:49but Buemi has now
35:51extended to 1.8 seconds
35:52clear of Degrassi.
35:54You know,
35:54half a second that lap.
35:55He can't drive
35:56too defensively
35:57because, you know,
35:58fear is definitely
35:59the pass to the dark side
36:00but he's pushing
36:02very, very hard there.
36:05Lap 26 of 33.
36:08Down towards the hairpin
36:09of turns eight and nine.
36:13This is the battle
36:14of a third position.
36:15Jerome D'Ambrosio
36:16for Dragon
36:16then Loic Duval
36:18and it is a drive-through penalty
36:19for Oliver Turvey.
36:20He did his pit stop
36:21in 57 seconds
36:23not 59 seconds
36:25as he was meant to do.
36:26So that's a real shame
36:27because Nelson Piquet
36:28promised me lots of champagne
36:30if both cars finished
36:31in the points.
36:32He did, didn't he?
36:33But it looks as though
36:33Turvey may now drop
36:34out of the points
36:35so I'm pretty living
36:37with race control myself
36:38after that decision.
36:39Now you know
36:40how a driver feels.
36:41Yeah, exactly.
36:4326 of 33.
36:44This is the battle
36:44over third place.
36:45Looks as though Buemi
36:46starting to edge
36:47the gap up at the front.
36:51And, uh,
36:52great to see the Dragon
36:53guys finishing
36:54in third and fourth place.
36:55I think they'd be
36:55satisfied with that.
36:58Team performance.
36:59This is Verne.
37:00This is Verne using
37:01his fan boost
37:01to go past
37:02Stefan Sarazan.
37:03Sarazan in a more
37:04retro helmet
37:05this weekend
37:06which is, uh,
37:07cool.
37:07But anyway,
37:08Verne using the fan boost
37:09goes through
37:09tenth place
37:10lining up for one
37:12championship point.
37:13Catching Piquet as well.
37:14So let's, uh,
37:15let's see what happens
37:16there in that battle.
37:17That will be for
37:17ninth place.
37:19Lap 27 of 33.
37:21Or eighth place
37:22because all of the
37:23Turvey's got his,
37:23uh, his drive-through
37:24coming.
37:24Yes, that's very true
37:25actually.
37:25So Piquet will be
37:26up into eighth.
37:27Verne will be up
37:28into ninth.
37:29And Sarazan
37:30will still be in the
37:30points in tenth position.
37:33There's almost like a
37:33two series.
37:35The guys up front,
37:37top four,
37:37are in the 17s
37:38and then the next guy,
37:40Nico Prost,
37:40is in the 19s.
37:41There's such a big
37:42gap there.
37:43I don't know how to...
37:43Why is Prost unable to
37:45go, at the moment,
37:47anywhere near the speed
37:48of Gwem?
37:49He's not a couple of
37:49tenths slower.
37:51You know, it's considerably
37:52slow.
37:53I don't know because
37:54last year he was a
37:55surprise of the season,
37:56wasn't he?
37:56Especially early on.
37:57He was dynamite.
37:58He was on the pole
37:59positions.
38:00He was running for
38:01race wins.
38:02It just hasn't come
38:03together so far.
38:04I don't know why.
38:05I'm going to have to go
38:05and have a little chat
38:06with him and sort of
38:07politely ask that question
38:09because as a driver,
38:10it's not a question you
38:10want to get asked.
38:11I have been asked it
38:12many times before.
38:13Why are you so much
38:14slower than your
38:15teammate?
38:16But that one hurts.
38:19Bouncing over the
38:20chicanes.
38:20This is our race leader,
38:21Sebastian Buemi.
38:232.2 seconds is
38:24advantage now over
38:25Lucas Degrassi as he
38:27comes down into the
38:29second of the chicanes.
38:31Five laps to go here.
38:32Yep, five laps to go.
38:34It's still that
38:34D'Ambrosio-Duval
38:35battle that's closest on
38:37track for third place.
38:39And Turvey is now
38:40served his drive-through
38:42penalty and is down
38:43into 12th position.
38:45So Piquet is up
38:46into eighth place
38:47but Jean-Erik Verne
38:49is now right up
38:50behind Nelson Piquet.
38:52Just eight tenths
38:53of a second between
38:53them.
38:55So that could be a
38:56battle that will
38:57ensue over that
38:58eighth place spot.
39:00As Buemi comes
39:01through turn 13.
39:0314, 15.
39:04Classic there of
39:05lifting early,
39:06a little bit of
39:07coast but then not
39:08breaking and keeping
39:09that minimum speed up
39:10through that chicane.
39:11That's how you save
39:11energy.
39:13While still doing a
39:14quick lap time which
39:15is clearly the object
39:16of the whole exercise.
39:20He comes through this
39:21last corner here
39:22trying to put the power
39:23down.
39:24We've seen a lot less
39:25oversteer there.
39:26It's like they've really
39:26got the setups a lot
39:27nicer than the cars
39:28were last year to drive.
39:29You can see them snapping
39:30sideways a lot there
39:31last year.
39:32They're more gradual
39:33in the power delivery
39:33this year.
39:34especially the two
39:35motor cars earlier
39:36on this season
39:36looked pretty snappy
39:37on the power.
39:38They looked a lot
39:39better today.
39:40Yeah, that's very
39:41true and they felt
39:42better as well.
39:44They're much more
39:45manageable than they
39:45were in Beijing
39:46where Piquet qualified
39:48last, frankly.
39:50Piquet looked like a
39:50controlled accident
39:51in the first race.
39:54No fault of his own.
39:55He was just hanging
39:55on to the car.
39:56Today it looks a lot
39:57better.
39:57Obviously the next
39:59TCR guys have done
40:00a lot of work
40:01in the gap between
40:04the second and third
40:05races of the season.
40:06And this now is
40:07the back of the third
40:08place but also this
40:09circuit is much more
40:10similar to Beijing
40:11than to Putrajaya
40:12last time out and in
40:14turn we're expecting
40:15Buenos Aires for the
40:16next race on the 5th
40:16of February to be much
40:18more like Putrajaya.
40:20It's a more classic
40:21track, isn't it?
40:22Yeah.
40:22Heavier braking zones,
40:23more hairpins,
40:23that kind of stuff.
40:24This is a...
40:25Oh, what's going on?
40:26Sorry.
40:27I'm getting a bit
40:28excited.
40:30Oh, good one.
40:31You confused us all.
40:32Yeah, thanks.
40:32Sorry about that.
40:33Yeah.
40:34Yeah, it happened.
40:35Yeah.
40:36So the two Dragon
40:38Cards still running
40:38third and fourth.
40:40Just two tenths of a
40:41second between them.
40:42And these two are so
40:44evenly matched.
40:45They might be the two
40:46most evenly matched
40:47teammates on the grid
40:48apart from maybe
40:49Vernon Bird, Pique and
40:51Turvey, but I think
40:52D'Ambrosio and Duval
40:53to me are absolutely
40:54one of the same.
40:56I would agree with you.
40:56consistently fast
40:57and they push each
40:59other on, but they
41:00seem to have a really
41:00good dynamic in that
41:01team too.
41:02They get on very,
41:02very well, but you
41:04know they want to beat
41:04each other.
41:05You have any
41:05conversation with them
41:06together and they're
41:07always on about,
41:07yeah, I want to beat
41:09him today.
41:09And they're not quite as
41:10polite as that, but
41:11that's the, you know,
41:12you definitely get that
41:13impression.
41:13Here's Pique and
41:14John Eric Byrne.
41:15A little lookup from Pique.
41:17Pique's changing the
41:18brake balance over the
41:19left hand.
41:21Clearly he needed to
41:23make that adjustment
41:23quickly because he's not
41:25happy to make that in
41:26that point of the track.
41:27It's something he had to
41:27get done in a hurry.
41:29Yep.
41:30They come over the line
41:31and run down towards
41:32turn one again.
41:35Swinging it through the
41:36left-hander.
41:36Pique, I thought, took a
41:37lot of curve there.
41:38He seemed to be up in the
41:39air.
41:40You're having fun
41:40excitement like I was.
41:44Laugh it up, Fuzzball.
41:46What you'll find here is
41:47if Pique's now doing less
41:49regeneration on the
41:50braking, he's going to
41:51have to adjust the brake
41:51balance because of that.
41:52As he gets closer to the
41:53end of the race, he'll be
41:54a bit more aggressive with
41:55what he's doing with the
41:57power.
41:57And this last year was
41:58the battle for the lead
41:59of the race coming down
42:00into turns eight and
42:01nine.
42:01John Eric Byrne centered
42:02up the inside of Pique
42:03into that corner and took
42:04the lead of the race away.
42:05How things change in 12
42:07months as they bounce
42:08through the chicane
42:09once more.
42:10We've only got three
42:11laps to go.
42:12But Emi's lead is up to
42:123.3 seconds.
42:14D'Ambrosio is still third
42:16and Duval is still right
42:17with him.
42:18Do you think we'll see
42:18Duval launch an attack
42:20or would that be the
42:21stupidest thing to do?
42:23He's going to be fighting
42:24against himself because
42:25the driver, the person
42:27he's trained since he was
42:28a kid, is going to want
42:29to do that.
42:30The professional that
42:31gets paid to drive
42:31racing cars might think
42:33twice about it because
42:34we've talked about it,
42:36he cannot take a
42:36teammate out.
42:37But I'll tell you what,
42:37I think Sean Eric Byrne is
42:38going to have a massive
42:39quick Nelson Piquet in the
42:40next two laps because he
42:42has had a hellishly bad
42:43day and he's angry.
42:47He's going to want to
42:48take this place to make
42:50himself feel a little
42:51better.
42:51there's Alex Tai, the team
42:53principal of the Virgin
42:54team, and look how much
42:56Byrne has closed in on
42:57these last couple of
42:58laps.
42:58More energy than Piquet.
43:00You've got more energy
43:01than Piquet as the
43:02message to Jean-Erik Byrne.
43:05Not much.
43:07But Piquet, because you've
43:08got enough energy to go.
43:10He's pushing like hell,
43:10how can he finish the
43:11race like that?
43:12Piquet saying, sorry,
43:16Byrne saying, how can I
43:17finish the race if we're
43:18pushing like hell?
43:19How can he finish the
43:20race, I think he was
43:21saying.
43:21I see, okay.
43:22But they're on the same
43:23energy, so you best figure a
43:24way past, which, you know,
43:25he's a good overtaker,
43:26Jean-Erik Byrne, there's no
43:27doubt.
43:28Any time he tries to make
43:29a move, Piquet's going to
43:30close the blast doors and
43:31won't be able to get the
43:33move done, I don't think,
43:34because we've only got two
43:35laps to go, so you don't
43:36need, well, we're getting to
43:38the point where you do need
43:39to keep an eye on your
43:40energy, but so much, so
43:43close to the wall on the
43:44way in there, Byrne,
43:45fantastic, and this is a
43:46great wheel-to-wheel
43:47battle that we're going to
43:48see for eighth position.
43:50I'm going to be
43:51disappointed if I don't
43:52see a big move here from
43:53Jean-Erik Byrne.
43:54It is a hard, hard pass,
43:56track to pass on, I'm
43:57sorry, but I'm expecting
43:58that, and here's Sebastian
44:00Buemi going to buy this
44:00merry way, just the
44:01dominant performance.
44:03Penultimate lap of the
44:04race for the Swiss racer.
44:07After leading the way in
44:09Putra Jaya, he then ran
44:12into a software problem
44:13with the Renault car, and
44:16that knocked him well out
44:18of contention for the win,
44:20and we still haven't had
44:21back-to-back race winners,
44:22but this is where he won for
44:25the first time last year,
44:27and he went on to finish
44:28second in the championship.
44:29He's got Oliver Turvey and
44:30Simone de Silvestro, sorry,
44:31Oliver Turvey, and, oh,
44:35and here's a look at the
44:35inside from Byrne, he's
44:36done it, but he's gone in
44:37way too deep.
44:38Piquet gets the cutback,
44:39side-by-side, contact,
44:41Piquet holds the position,
44:43Jean-Erik Byrne is waving
44:44his fist like a furious
44:45Frenchman, and may have had
44:47damage to the car there,
44:48but he's going to try again.
44:49Keep his hands on the wheel
44:51and try and get back past
44:52him.
44:53You know, he misjudged it a
44:55little bit, but it's not
44:56Piquet's fault.
44:57No, Piquet was totally
44:58legitimate to go back
44:59underneath him there as
45:00they get on the brakes now.
45:01Oh, now he's not
45:02legitimate, he's in the
45:03wall.
45:03Piquet off.
45:04Oh, that's a big old hit.
45:07And that, I think, will
45:08effectively finish the race
45:10here.
45:10We're on the last lap.
45:11There's going to be yellow
45:12flags aplenty, maybe even a
45:14safety car.
45:15Nelson Piquet, well, he
45:17promised us the champagne if
45:18we had two-point scoring
45:19finishes.
45:20We're not going to now,
45:21we're going to have a
45:22retirement.
45:25Any odd crash.
45:27Unless he got damaged
45:28from that and it let go on
45:30the way into the chicane.
45:31That would be my...
45:31It didn't just slow down.
45:32These guys really need to
45:34slow down here with this
45:35wave gel.
45:35Here's our race leader
45:37here.
45:38Here comes Sebastian
45:39Buemi.
45:39He manages to get past
45:40Nelson Piquet.
45:41Piquet's out of the race.
45:43Buemi made a mistake in the
45:45qualifying session.
45:46Only started in fifth
45:47place on the grid.
45:49But such is the pace and
45:50the performance of
45:50Sebastian Buemi this year
45:52that he managed to get
45:53through and take the lead
45:54of the race.
45:55He won here for the first
45:56time in Formula E last
45:58year.
45:58Now he's going to take the
46:00chequen flag and take
46:01victory in Punta del
46:04Ester.
46:07That was a tough one.
46:09Two percent left.
46:11Go slow in turn 14.
46:13The second place for Lucas
46:15Degrassi.
46:16That's domination right there
46:18from Sebastian Buemi.
46:20Nice team result for the
46:21Dragon boys there.
46:22Third and fourth.
46:26Third across the line is
46:27Jerome D'Ambrosio in the
46:28end.
46:28Less than a tenth of a
46:29second.
46:30Clear of Loic Duval.
46:31Duval I think made his
46:32point but what a pump
46:34Sebastian Buemi.
46:35Stuck it in the wall in
46:36practice.
46:37Messed up his qualifying run
46:38but now has won the race
46:41and those are more
46:43satisfying than likes to
46:45flag surely.
46:46Absolutely.
46:47This is the bit that
46:48pays the big points.
46:49This is the bit that
46:50pays the big prize money
46:51as I've been reminded
46:52many times by my boss.
46:54What does qualifying pay?
46:55What does practice pay?
46:56This is when it pays.
46:58And Nelson Piquet had a
47:00bit of a rough end to
47:02the race there.
47:04Verne finished the race
47:05in seventh position so he
47:06also got past Daniel
47:08lapped on that last lap.
47:09Daniel lapped did a 1
47:10minute 43 so he lost 23
47:12seconds maybe.
47:13Energy issue?
47:14Yeah 1% energy maybe he
47:15was just in trouble with
47:16his energy there but nice
47:18recovery from John
47:19Eric Verne.
47:20That's the oddest crash.
47:21Yeah I didn't quite catch
47:22the start of that but I
47:23think the right rear has
47:26got damaged and it's let
47:27go.
47:28He hit the wall on the
47:28way in and then just had a
47:29massive oversteer but it
47:33looks like he's way way too
47:36quick on entry.
47:36I don't know.
47:38Such an odd one.
47:39It's a very difficult thing
47:40to judge without the motor
47:42noise of a traditional
47:42engine when he actually
47:44jumps out of the throttle
47:45but oof.
47:46Yeah.
47:48Nasty one for Nelson
47:49Piquet.
47:50Not the way he wanted to
47:51finish.
47:51What was the most promising
47:52weekend of the next EV
47:54Team China Racing season?
47:56They could have not
47:57comfortably but quite
47:59competently had a seventh
48:00and eighth place finish
48:01there.
48:01Turvey got a drive-through
48:03penalty and Piquet crashed
48:04on the penultimate lap of
48:06the race.
48:07At least her pace was
48:07somewhat better.
48:08They were closer weren't
48:09they Phil?
48:12Tell that to a defending
48:13champion and see if he
48:14goes yeah great.
48:15There's a round of
48:16applause for Sebastian
48:17Buemi as he makes his
48:18way back to the pit lane
48:19and those fans are now
48:20going to make their way
48:21down to the podium for
48:22the podium presentation.
48:23Okay Donnie Box.
48:25He's in the pit.
48:26I understood that bit.
48:27Very good.
48:28Very good.
48:33Hopefully the fans here
48:34in Uruguay have seen
48:35an entertaining race.
48:38Love the enthusiasm
48:39from the fans.
48:40Yeah it's been great
48:41isn't it?
48:41Brilliant.
48:41Not the absolute
48:43crazy race that we've
48:47had so far this season.
48:50We have been spoiled
48:51for a while.
48:51Really we have.
48:53Exactly.
48:53That's still a good race
48:54but when it doesn't all
48:57go absolutely bonkers
48:58you kind of feel a bit
49:00let down don't you?
49:01That last lap pass
49:02that Jean-Erik Verne
49:04attempted was really
49:05something.
49:07And he misjudged it
49:09a little bit and then
49:10whether Piquet had a
49:11mechanical or not
49:11we'll have to find out
49:12but there's a happy
49:14winner with Sebastian
49:15Buemi.
49:15Where's your team?
49:16Yeah he wants to
49:17celebrate with his team
49:18he's like come on guys
49:18they're knackered
49:20they've been busy
49:20rebuilding your car all day.
49:23And they all were at
49:24the far end of the pit lane
49:25as well.
49:26So they've got the
49:27longest to run down.
49:28This is when the
49:29mechanics don't mind
49:31when you've crashed the
49:31car.
49:32When they can sort of
49:33you repay them like
49:34that and they don't
49:35mind.
49:36They know this guy
49:36gives everything in the
49:37car and they're happy.
49:41So Sebastian Buemi
49:44weighs himself just to
49:45make sure everything's
49:46decent and then we will
49:47no doubt speak to him.
49:49There is a third place
49:50for Jerome D'Ambrosio
49:52and I think
49:53you know that'll be
49:55satisfactory.
49:56You're never going to be
49:56delighted to start on
49:58pole and finish in third
49:59but I think that's a
49:59it's a natural order
50:01finishing position for
50:02Dragon.
50:03He kind of knew what he
50:04was up against.
50:05I don't think they've got
50:06the outright race pace
50:07of the Apt guys
50:09and the Renault E-Dams
50:11guys.
50:11I just don't think
50:12they've got it yet
50:12but they're getting
50:13closer.
50:14Their problem is
50:15they've got to take
50:16advantage when the
50:17others run into
50:18trouble and that
50:19was a good job.
50:21Yeah.
50:22Yeah when they got
50:23into trouble themselves
50:23which with the
50:25dampers failing on
50:26the car.
50:26Yeah.
50:28That is the stupid
50:29things.
50:29Yeah.
50:30This is on board
50:31then with.
50:34He did hit it
50:35you hear like a
50:35bump.
50:36But the right rear
50:37on the way in and
50:38then it just goes
50:38wrong.
50:40Yeah we did.
50:44That's a big one
50:45for PK.
50:46It didn't just go a
50:47little bit wrong
50:47did it?
50:48No.
50:50Verne did well
50:51to keep out of the
50:52wear it would all
50:53as well.
50:53Those ones the
50:54quick spins like
50:55that those are the
50:55ones you can knock
50:56yourself out a little
50:57bit with.
50:59Glad that those
51:00tyres were there
51:00because that would
51:01have been a lot
51:02bigger.
51:03Verne did well to
51:04miss him didn't he?
51:05Yeah I was just
51:05thinking that.
51:06And the recovery
51:08operation begins.
51:09Let's hear from
51:10our top three.
51:11Sebastian Buemi,
51:12Lucas Degrassi,
51:13Jerome D'Ambrosio
51:14they're talking to
51:15Nicky Shields and
51:16we'll start with our
51:17race winner his
51:18fifth win.
51:21Sebastian Buemi
51:21you know we were
51:22here this time last
51:23year celebrating and
51:24you're doing it
51:24again.
51:25Congratulations.
51:27It's been a tough
51:27qualifying for me.
51:29Tough day.
51:30I had a big crash
51:31early on so really
51:33happy to be honest
51:34to score the points.
51:35We missed out in
51:36Malaysia so it's good
51:37to come back.
51:38The team has done a
51:39great job especially
51:39my mechanics so I
51:40really like to say
51:42thank you.
51:42you know they had to
51:43change the casing of
51:44the gearbox everything
51:45so in the end it's a
51:46good work.
51:47And Lucas you were
51:48really putting the
51:48pressure on Sebastian
51:49around the yellow flag.
51:51Was there a moment
51:52that you thought you
51:52could take him?
51:54Yeah of course I was
51:55trying to put pressure
51:56to see if he did
51:56if he would do a
51:58mistake but that was
51:59not the case.
52:00He did a great race.
52:01I think everybody
52:02yeah also Jerome and
52:04Duval everybody had
52:05a very strong race.
52:07We managed to do a
52:07good pit stop good
52:08strategy on the out
52:09lap.
52:10I managed to catch
52:10on Seb try to put
52:12some pressure but
52:13yeah still today we
52:14didn't have the pace
52:15for the victory so the
52:16best we could do was
52:17the second place.
52:18And do you think you
52:18know you will be able
52:19to find that pace ahead
52:20of the next race?
52:21It's difficult because
52:22his team did a
52:23fantastic job.
52:25My team also has been
52:26doing a very very good
52:27job but we have to
52:28catch up on them.
52:29We've been fighting
52:29very hard since
52:30Beijing.
52:31I think we're much
52:31closer than we were
52:32before so we're going
52:34to keep working during
52:34summer here to try to
52:37get a better position
52:38for Buenos Aires.
52:39Well well done.
52:41And Jerome also
52:42congratulations.
52:43Now tell us what
52:44happened in that pit
52:45stop because it looked
52:45like it cost you a
52:46position.
52:47Yeah it did.
52:48I think my in lap
52:50was in the pits it
52:52was a little slow
52:53and then when I think
52:55you know Lucas went
52:56a little early I think
52:57he went a little bit
52:58from what I heard on
52:58the radio a little bit
52:59under the speed
53:00minimum speed which
53:02allowed him to pass us
53:03but in the end you
53:04know it was more I had a
53:05big gap at the end
53:06at the entry so I
53:06should have kept it.
53:08And what about your
53:09teammate Duval because
53:10it looked like he was
53:10on your tail as well.
53:11Yeah we had a very
53:12strong fight with
53:13Loic until the finish
53:15line literally but it's
53:17it was a good fight
53:18this this time it went
53:20my way but yeah it's
53:22it's good to get the
53:23boat dragging boat
53:24dragging cars in the
53:25in the top five.
53:26Well done.
53:26Thanks very much.
