00:01Guess the riddle. It's moving at 5 miles per second.
00:04It makes one circle around Earth every 90 minutes.
00:07Within 24 hours, it sees 16 sunrises and sunsets.
00:12It also observes many strange phenomena, like gigantic bizarre symbols written in a desert.
00:18You probably already know what it is.
00:21The International Space Station
00:25There are a lot of things we don't notice here on Earth,
00:28but if we step back, we'll see some pretty strange stuff happening on the planet.
00:33Most often, astronauts notice these mysterious things,
00:36and recently, they've seen weird patterns in a deserted area of Tunis.
00:41They aren't like fake crop circles that were popular in the early 2000s.
00:46You may think these strange hieroglyphs have an unearthly origin.
00:50They're quite large. That's how astronauts could see them from space.
00:54But why doesn't anyone talk about them on Earth?
00:57Do Tunisians know what's going on there?
01:00In many movies and in real life, secret organizations hide information about some kind of extraterrestrial things.
01:09You might have also noticed that most videos about strange phenomena taken by eyewitnesses have terrible quality.
01:16As if the operator is always shooting on an old VHS camera.
01:20But in the case of the ISS, everything is different.
01:25The mysterious symbols were captured on a 4K camera mounted on board the ISS.
01:30And the owner of this camera is Sen Corporation Limited,
01:33which provides video streaming from space to individuals and businesses.
01:38And do you know what the principle of this company is?
01:41They strive to make space data publicly available and useful.
01:47Thanks to the high quality of the video and open access,
01:50the mystery of extraterrestrial technology has been solved.
01:54Do you know what it is?
01:56Think for yourself and see other strange phenomena that astronauts have observed.
02:00Perhaps the following riddles will lead you to the right answer.
02:03But if you fail, you'll get the answer at the end of the video.
02:07Meet NASA astronaut Matthew Dominic.
02:10He likes to take pictures from the ISS and post them on the internet.
02:14After six months of working in Earth's orbit, he shared a mysterious phenomenon with us.
02:19You can see most of Asia from an altitude of about 250 miles.
02:24There are flashes of lightning, city lights, and a strange red glow.
02:31Dominic admitted that he wasn't sure about its origin.
02:34Considering the glow is so visible from such a long distance, this must be something big.
02:39Try to guess. Here's a clue.
02:42Perhaps squids are guilty of this strange visual effect.
02:46But no, it's not a giant glowing kraken.
02:49You'll find the answer at the end.
02:52The following phenomenon occurred not on Earth, but above it.
02:56Take a look at this golden red glow in the atmosphere.
03:00The ISS took this photo while flying over the Pacific Ocean, northeast of Papua New Guinea.
03:06If you think it's pulverized gold, then you're wrong.
03:09This is probably the most difficult puzzle in this video.
03:12Do you know anything about chemistry, physics, and astronomy?
03:16If not, then you're unlikely to answer this riddle.
03:19Wait, you'll get the answer soon.
03:21This picture was taken by an ISS astronaut during a flyby over Southeast Asia in 2021.
03:29Two shimmering blue balls of light appeared in the dark and slightly ominous atmosphere of Earth.
03:35One was flickering over the Gulf of Thailand, and the other was glowing near the South China Sea.
03:41The difficulty in solving this phenomenon lies in the fact that not one, but two scientific phenomena are taking place here.
03:49Lightning?
03:50Reflection of moonlight from ice particles?
03:53Spaceships from another planet?
03:55What do you think it is?
03:56Do you want to get an answer?
03:58Wait a bit.
04:00So the first mystery is those strange hieroglyphs in the desert.
04:04Do you have any ideas?
04:06I must warn you though, the truth about this phenomenon may disappoint you a little.
04:11These are not symbols made by an extraterrestrial civilization.
04:16These are agricultural patterns.
04:19Someone just plowed the land or planted vegetables.
04:22It doesn't seem strange from below, but from above, it looks like an unknown language or a cipher.
04:30So the next mystery is the red light.
04:33Some internet users said it could have been an erupting volcano.
04:37Others suggested that commercial vessels emit a red light to catch squid.
04:41Fishers use this color to attract sea creatures.
04:45So maybe it was a hunt on the giant squid after all.
04:49And one user claimed that those red lights belonged to a giant fishing fleet.
04:54And its red light can be seen in the nighttime images taken by some satellites.
05:00It's time to deal with the most difficult mystery.
05:04The golden red glow.
05:06If you understand the atmosphere of our planet and know about the chemical interaction between the elements of the periodic table,
05:13then you've probably guessed what it is.
05:16If not, then here's a simple answer.
05:18A golden red glow appears as sunlight interacts with molecules and atoms in the Earth's atmosphere.
05:26Now, let's take a closer look at this.
05:29Ultraviolet light falls on molecules such as oxygen, ozone-sodium, and nitrogen.
05:35Light stimulates these cells, meaning it charges them with energy during the day, causing them to separate and excite the electrons inside.
05:44Then, these charged particles collide with each other and release energy.
05:49As a result of this process, a mesmerizing glow appears.
05:54It's mostly oxygen that gives the red color to this glow.
05:57The golden light appears because of sodium particles.
06:01Scientists divide this phenomenon into three categories.
06:05Day glow, twilight glow, and night glow.
06:10Depending on the illumination of the atmosphere by sunlight and the position of the observer, these lights have unique characteristics.
06:18Such a fascinating phenomenon not only shows the visual aesthetics of our planet, but also helps scientists better study the upper atmosphere.
06:27And finally, the answer to the fourth riddle.
06:30We have two blue lights.
06:32Both have different natures.
06:34Let's deal with the first one.
06:36The blue light over the Gulf of Thailand was caused by a thunderstorm.
06:40But it's not that simple.
06:42If you observe Earth from the ISS, you may not always see lightning flashes during thunderstorms because they're usually hidden by clouds.
06:51This time, the photographer from the ISS was lucky.
06:55There was a gap in the clouds.
06:57Lightning illuminated the surrounding walls of this cloud and produced this blue glowing ring.
07:03Do you know that a blue thunderstorm is not the most unusual phenomenon in the sky?
07:08Red lightning flashes can appear too.
07:10They're called sprites.
07:12They occur above clouds during an ordinary lightning strike and extend to a height of up to 10 miles.
07:19That's why it's hard for us to see them from the ground.
07:22Sprites can also extend upward along the trajectory of a narrow cone, like fans.
07:27And at this moment, they can glow with blue light.
07:32Another cool phenomenon is called elves.
07:35These are giant, expanding flashes of light in the shape of a pancake.
07:40They can reach thousands of miles across and also appear during thunderstorms.
07:45Seeing these pancakes is pretty difficult because they exist for less than a thousandth of a second.
07:52But what about the second glow?
07:54Things get a little more complicated here.
07:57The reason for this blue flash is the Moon.
08:01It seems to us that our satellite glows by itself at night.
08:06But it just reflects the sunlight that falls on it.
08:09The light from the Moon passes through the atmosphere.
08:12And the magic happens.
08:14We see a blue sky during the day because the Sun's rays get scattered in the atmosphere.
08:20It's as if they pass through special filters.
08:23The light reflected from the Moon is also scattered, passes through these filters, and turns blue.
08:30But why don't we see this glow at night?
08:33Because it's too weak compared to the daytime glow of the Sun.
08:37But from a certain angle and at a certain height, this blue moonlight can be seen.
08:42Astronauts from the ISS manage to catch this scattering.
08:46It's like turning the sky blue, only a smaller version.
08:50But why blue?
08:52Light consists of different colors and each of them has its own wavelength.
08:56Blue has the shortest wavelength.
08:59So it's the easiest to scatter.
09:02That's it for today.
