00:00If you fall into a black hole, can you ever get back out?
00:03So the answer is, according to Einstein's theory, no.
00:07You've gone to this infinitely distorted space and time, and it's just done.
00:11But that seems not to be the whole story.
00:12Stephen Hawking figured out that something actually does escape.
00:16What's called Hawking radiation is emitted from the black hole.
00:19And so that means it's losing energy, and that means one day it will be gone.
00:23But here's what's weird.
00:24Stephen Hawking thought that that radiation didn't contain any information.
00:27But then what happened to all of the stuff that fell into the black hole?
00:31The laws of nature are quite clear on this.
00:33Information does not get destroyed.
00:35So that's what bothered everybody for a very long time.
00:38But new papers suggest...
00:39Stephen missed a bit in his calculation.
00:42Very subtle.
00:43All the information about everything that fell in is imprinted in the radiation,
00:47as you would normally expect.
00:49But that gives us a new mystery.
00:51How did the stuff that fell in get outside again as radiation?
