00:00Hello and welcome to Kent Tonight, live on KMTV.
00:27I'm Bartholomew Hall, here are your top stories on Friday the 11th of July.
00:32A sky of smoke, black smog seen for miles as Medway Recycling Centre goes up in flames.
00:39We have surrounded the fire, it's very much under control now.
00:42We are continuing to work with on-site staff to break up the stack and extinguish the fire.
00:47Cut off, South East Water customers under hosepipe ban after driest spring in 130 years.
00:54We need everybody to work together to reduce demand, to make sure we don't see any issues in the environment or with customer supplies.
01:00And swinging for success. Chatham Primary School encourages pupils to get active for annual Healthy Living Week.
01:07I think it's important to educate them young to understand their physical activity, keep their mind and soul as healthy as the body.
01:13But first this evening, a pillar of thick black smoke has taken over the skies of North Kent today
01:28as part of a recycling centre at Medway City Estate caught fire.
01:33Crews were at the scene from 6 o'clock this morning fighting the flames with multiple fire engines,
01:38but the cause of the burning plastic is still unknown. Finn McDermid has the story.
01:45All across Medway this morning, many woke up to plumes of thick black smoke covering the sky
01:50that could be spotted from as far away as Canterbury.
01:53Fire crews were on the scene from 6 in the morning and soon discovered the source,
01:57a plastic disposal area at the Viridore Recycling Centre in Medway City Estate Business Park.
02:03The cause of the fire isn't yet known,
02:05but even at its peak when it was blocking out the sun in parts of the estate,
02:09nearby companies said it was mostly business as usual.
02:12At first it was panic.
02:14Around 6am, one of my members of staff, one of my coaches,
02:18messaged me a video of loads of black smoke coming from Medway City Estate.
02:23So the atmosphere is a little bit more different than normal.
02:26It's very quiet at this part of the estate.
02:28It seemed a lot of panic getting in, whether we could get in and out of the estate right,
02:32but business is used at the moment, so it hasn't been too traumatic for the business,
02:36getting people in and out of the gym.
02:38Even commuters travelling on nearby motorways spotted the smoke.
02:42Yeah, so I was taking my missus to work this morning, driving up the M25.
02:46As I was coming out of Gillingham, where I live, literally just down the road,
02:50we see the smoke just across from where Dockside is.
02:54We were driving through past the Medway Tunnel,
02:57looked to the left-hand side, and you can just see this big smoke just erupting.
03:01Yeah, I decided to drive down to Medway City Estate to see what was actually going on.
03:04I was able to walk onto the site.
03:07All the workers had just sat there with, well, nothing to do, I'm assuming,
03:11and you can still see the fire coming out of the concrete square of where it's coming from.
03:16Hours later, the fire was almost fully extinguished,
03:19with the pillar of thick black smoke getting smaller and lighter.
03:22Now, even though the fire has been greatly diminished,
03:26you can see it is still burning.
03:28There are still fire crews, and Kent Fire and Rescue Service are saying
03:31that people still need to stay safe and cautious.
03:34OK, so approximately 6am this morning,
03:36crews were called to report of a fire within the recycling centre behind me.
03:41They were met with quite a severe, well-established fire.
03:44At the height of the incident, we had six fire engines and a hype vehicle at a tent.
03:49That's currently now sitting at four fire engines and a hype vehicle.
03:52We have surrounded the fire, it's very much under control now.
03:56We are continuing to work with on-site staff to break up the stack and extinguish the fire.
04:01Now that the fire has almost been extinguished thanks to the efforts of the emergency services,
04:06Medway's skies have returned to a nice clear blue.
04:09Finn McDermid for KMTV.
04:10Well, Finn joins us here in the studio now.
04:14Finn, what's the latest update this evening?
04:16Well, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, just about an hour ago,
04:19said the advice to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke in the area of Clipper Close in Rochester
04:25remains in place.
04:26They said that five fire engines and a hype vehicle, which we all saw there,
04:30remain in attendance at the incident.
04:32Crews are using main jets and ground monitors to contain the fire,
04:35and they are making good progress to extinguish the flames.
04:39They also advise anyone to share this information with any loved ones in the area
04:44who might be affected but don't have access to the internet.
04:47Well, residents across Medway and parts of North Kent today
04:50have been getting used to the sight of this thick black smog covering the skies,
04:55but you were actually there at the scene.
04:57What was it like at the peak of the fire today?
04:59It was very surreal.
05:00When I first got down there, you couldn't get directly to the fire
05:04simply because of safety concerns,
05:07and there was sort of wisps of flame that were just coming up over this one fence,
05:11and at one point the sun was almost entirely blocked out by that thick black smoke,
05:17and there was also just ash in the air.
05:19I mean, it sort of stuck to your clothes, to your skin,
05:23so it was very interesting.
05:24And the smell as well, because it was, of course, burning plastic,
05:28you could really feel the smell right away.
05:30But the atmosphere as I was there wasn't actually that sort of stark.
05:34Everyone was still getting along with work.
05:36They knew that the fire service were handling it.
05:38I spoke to many people who simply said,
05:39yeah, I'm just carrying all my work
05:40because there were so many businesses, obviously, in that area.
05:43Yeah, of course, Medway City Estate, it is a very busy place.
05:46We know that it can sometimes be clogged up with traffic.
05:49Did you see any issues with traffic today?
05:51Oh, definitely. Yeah, there was definitely issues with traffic.
05:53As I was trying to leave, you had a lorry trying to go out one way,
05:57another lorry trying to come in, and it was all very congested.
05:59But there were also periods of quiet, and the fire service were great.
06:02They were sort of spread out across all the different roads
06:05that led to where the specific point in the recycling centre.
06:08So they were handling that fine,
06:10and it was quite open on that clip of clothes road there.
06:12Yeah, and just tell us when we can expect the fire
06:15to be fully extinguished. What have they told you?
06:17They've said, officials have said,
06:19that they will try and get it fully extinguished as soon as possible.
06:23They haven't got an exact day or, sorry, an exact hour,
06:26but it's believed it should be later this evening.
06:29OK, Finn, well, thank you very much for those details.
06:32I'm sure there'll be plenty more updates throughout the evening
06:34and the weekend over on Kent Online.
06:37Next, the A20 near Maidstone has temporarily closed again
06:41after announcements yesterday that investigations
06:43into the police shooting of Sean O'Mara will continue.
06:48Well, it marks the fourth time the road has been shut
06:50since the incident on the 7th of July
06:52with explosive ordnance disposal teams at the site.
06:58Well, since Monday, four suspicious devices
07:00have been found by police,
07:01while O'Mara remains in hospital after he was shot
07:05whilst approaching police with a suspected explosive device
07:08and a chainsaw.
07:10Well, Kent Police says that motorists are advised
07:12to find alternative routes until further notice.
07:15Following recent antisocial behaviour in the Isle of Thanet,
07:21another dispersal order has been issued for the district.
07:24In June, instances of violence, aggression and loitering
07:28in Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs
07:30meant multiple orders were given throughout the month.
07:33Well, a dispersal order means police are able to move
07:35anyone aged 10 or over from the area
07:38if they can be considered as causing disruption.
07:40The measures for July came into force at 2pm today
07:44and will last 48 hours.
07:48Record-breaking demand for drinking water
07:50has led to temporary hosepipe bans across Kent
07:53for households supplied by South East Water.
07:56The ban aims to protect essential water use
07:58and the environment.
08:00South East Water says it's monitoring the weather,
08:02reviewing the ban regularly and working hard to fix leaks.
08:06Kristen Hawthorne has more.
08:07South East Water have announced a hosepipe ban
08:10starting today.
08:12This will be enforced from the 18th of July.
08:14It's due to an increased demand of drinking water
08:17as Kent saw two heatwaves causing record high temperatures.
08:21Due to the consistently hot and dry weather,
08:24South East say that the demand for water
08:25is the highest that they've ever seen,
08:27exceeding the summer average by 105 million.
08:30This is enough to provide water
08:32to another four towns the size of Needstone.
08:34And I would just remind people
08:36this is about preserving
08:38the precious resource of drinking water that we've got
08:40and we can talk about enforcement and things like that
08:43but really the message is
08:44we need everybody to work together
08:46to reduce demand
08:47to make sure we don't see any issues
08:48in the environment or with customer supplies.
08:51I went to Snodland
08:52where South East Water is based
08:53to speak to the public
08:55and find out what they thought about the ban
08:57and whether or not
08:58they would tell on a neighbour using a hosepipe.
09:00I suppose it's necessary
09:01we're short of water
09:02it's been the driest time since forever
09:07so yeah, we've got to try and save water
09:11so we don't run out.
09:12I think if it's causing a health risk to other people
09:15and you're not allowed to use
09:16something that's technically someone's right
09:17which is a bit of water
09:18I think it's a bit not ideal really.
09:21Not ideal
09:22but we just have to get on with it, don't we?
09:24Nah
09:25You know, if the money was invested in the right places
09:28we had the right people in charge
09:29it wouldn't happen
09:30No
09:30Would you?
09:34No, I wouldn't
09:34Nah
09:35I've never been a grass in my life
09:37it's not the way I do things
09:39Probably not, no
09:40it's none of my business
09:42I want to get an argument with them
09:43and if they really need it
09:43they really need it
09:44It's not yet known
09:45when the ban will be lifted
09:47but with another Amber Heat Health Alert
09:49announced for Kent
09:50this ban may not be the last
09:52otherwise
09:53taps could run dry
09:55Kristen Hawthorne
09:57for KMTV
09:57Snodland
09:58Well, staying with our recent warm weather
10:04much of southern England
10:05including Kent

10:07an Amber Heat Health Alert
10:09rising from the yellow one
10:10which was put in place yesterday
10:12issued at midday today

10:38in Dartford
10:39some low wind speeds too
10:40as we go into tomorrow morning
10:42temperatures rising a bit
10:43to an average of 21 degrees
10:45across the county

10:49temperatures ranging from 20 degrees
10:51all the way up to 27
10:53with winds hitting 11 miles per hour
10:55here's your outlook
10:55highs of 27 degrees on Sunday
10:57and Monday dropping to 23 on Tuesday
10:59with partly cloudy weather
11:01expected across the board
11:02It is looking like it will be a very nice weekend
11:12if you are planning to go out
11:14Time for a break now
11:15but coming up
11:15we'll have all the latest health headlines
11:17with Dr Julian Spinks
11:19We'll also have advice on how to keep cool
11:21and how to keep an eye on loved ones
11:23during the heat wave
11:24as resident doctors vote to go on strike
11:27at the end of the month
11:28We'll be hearing about the ripple effect
11:30it will have across the health service
11:32All that and plenty more news
11:34just for Kent
11:34coming up after this very short break
11:37I'll see you in a minute
11:37Bye-bye
11:38I'll see you in a minute
12:08Bye-bye
12:38Bye-bye
13:08Bye-bye
13:38Bye-bye
14:08Bye-bye
14:38Bye-bye
15:08Hello and welcome back to Kent Tonight
15:15live on KMTV
15:16Resident doctors in England have said
15:19they will strike for five days
15:21from the 25th of July
15:22and the government is urging supermarkets
15:24to change layouts to boost healthy habits
15:26Well, it's time for your health headlines
15:28with our health expert, Dr Julian Spinks
15:31Julian, welcome back to the sofa
15:39Good to have you here
15:40Look, it's hot
15:42Not our first heat wave this summer
15:43Not the hottest
15:44but what's the general advice for people?
15:47Well, number one
15:47keep an eye on what the weather forecast says
15:49because if it is going to be hot
15:50there are things you can do to prepare
15:51For example, at home
15:53you can open your windows overnight
15:54when it's cooler
15:55and then shut them when the sun comes up
15:57Likewise, shutting the curtains
15:59on the sunny side of the house
16:00which may mean switching things around
16:02and that can keep the temperature in the house down
16:05The really critical things also are to do with fluids
16:08so making sure you have plenty of fluids
16:10and whilst it's tempting to have lots and lots of nice cold lagers
16:13in reality, too much alcohol is dehydrating
16:16so make sure you have some non-alcoholic drinks
16:19There are times of the day
16:20when you shouldn't be going out if you can avoid it
16:23so between 11 and 3
16:24that's when it's hottest
16:25also you're most likely to burn
16:27and finally, what we need to be doing
16:29is keeping an eye out for our neighbours
16:30particularly those who are housebound
16:32or bedbound
16:33or if you have a relative like that
16:34make sure they're being able to get fluids
16:36and do that sort of thing
16:37because they may not be able to get up
16:38and get that fluid
16:39Of course, those warnings
16:41and that advice
16:42also sort of plays into this amber heat health alert
16:44that we've got in force at the moment
16:46As a GP in primary care
16:49how often are you seeing these heat waves
16:51that we're having
16:52these high temperatures
16:53actually impact the work that you do
16:54and having patients come to you
16:56affected by it?
16:57I'm pleased to say not as much as you might imagine
17:00but we do get the odd person we end up admitting
17:03particularly if we think they have heat stroke
17:04and of course we have lots of people who get sunburned
17:08and come to us thinking we can fix it
17:10but that's very tricky
17:11I think the main message is
17:14is that if you can take steps to protect yourself
17:17you're not going to run into difficulties
17:18and you can enjoy the hot weather
17:20because we all want people to enjoy life
17:22Absolutely
17:23that's the key takeaway
17:24OK, let's move on to the doctor strikes now
17:27Resident doctors
17:28formerly known as junior doctors in England
17:30have said they will strike for five days
17:32from the 25th of July
17:33after voting in favour of fresh action over pay
17:37can you take us through what this means?
17:40Yes
17:40and it's a long-running dispute
17:41which everyone thought was pretty much solved
17:44with previous offers
17:45their actual pay has slipped further and further behind over time
17:50and the BMA suggests they're still 29% below
17:54or they need a 29% increase
17:55to bring them back to where they were
17:58there is dispute from the government
18:00as to whether that's the case
18:01it's all to do with the RPI or the CPI way of judging inflation
18:06but they are still very worried
18:09and the junior doctors voted to strike
18:12and it met the actual threshold for that
18:14although it was a relatively low turnout
18:17versus the previous time
18:19it means five days worth of strike
18:21there will be cover
18:23either covered by junior doctors
18:25who are not BMA members
18:27and have decided not to strike
18:28or by more senior doctors
18:30but it's the routine things
18:32the operation of missions
18:33and that side
18:33means that that won't happen
18:35and it will probably extend waiting lists even further
18:38and just quickly
18:39what sort of impact
18:39could this have on patients
18:41if they need to go and see their GP
18:42or go to any?
18:44I think that actually
18:45safety is less of a problem
18:47than the fact that it's going to extend waiting time
18:50so people are already waiting a long time
18:52it's going to push it back further
18:53OK
18:54I want to move on to our final topic very quickly
18:56food businesses and supermarkets
18:58must make it easier for customers
18:59to buy healthy food
19:00under new government plans
19:02what do you think?
19:03Will this work?
19:04I think that it's one of those nudge factors
19:06that can make a difference
19:07when I go out shopping
19:09it's actually often quite difficult
19:10to find food that's equal for me
19:11I'm diabetic
19:12and that's mostly the healthy stuff
19:14everyone else should be eating
19:15and sometimes the layout
19:17can be not very helpful
19:18because you'll have to choose
19:19your fruit and vegetables
19:20before you get to know
19:21what you're buying otherwise
19:22so that sort of thing
19:23can make a difference
19:24you've got the famous sweets
19:26and things at the checkout
19:27which tempt you to go for unhealthy things
19:29I think we've got to allow people
19:31to be able to do some unhealthy things
19:33but at the same time
19:34we need to give them the opportunity
19:36to make those changes
19:37which are healthier
19:38It seems like it's the sort of sequel
19:39to the calories being put on
19:41on restaurant menus for example
19:43Yes
19:43it allows you to judge
19:45what's good and what's bad
19:46it points you in the direction
19:48of the things that are healthier
19:49rather than sort of us pushing hard
19:52and saying you mustn't eat this
19:53you've got to do that
19:53Julian, thank you very much
19:54for joining us this week
19:56Well, speaking of food habits
19:58a primary school in Chatham
19:59is hosting its Healthy Living Week
20:01designed to encourage children
20:02not only to eat well
20:03but to get active too
20:05Swingate Primary holds the event
20:06every year
20:07and this time
20:08pupils enjoyed playing football
20:09and trying martial arts
20:11Teachers hope that the tradition
20:12ensures students
20:13leave their lessons
20:14with physical and mental confidence
20:16and discover new hobbies
20:17outside the school gates
20:18Our community reporter
20:19Henry Luck has more
20:20We all remember our school sports days
20:23but what about a sports week?
20:26That's exactly what Spring Gate Primary School
20:29in Chatham are embracing here
20:31as part of their Healthy Living Week
20:34Swingate's Healthy Living Week
20:36has officially kicked off
20:38Let's go around and see what's on offer
20:41From basketball, dancing and martial arts
20:47The aim of this week
20:49is to get children to try
20:51as many sports as possible
20:53I think it's important
20:54to educate them young
20:55to understand that physical activity
20:56keep their mind and soul
20:58as healthy as the body
20:59so it's important to
21:01encourage them to take part
21:02in physical activity every day
21:05and try to make it as fun as possible
21:08so they can carry on that
21:09without the support of other clubs
21:12in the community
21:12and they can take that initiative
21:13to keep playing and have fun
21:16outside school
21:17as much as it is in school
21:19For some of the volunteers
21:20the Healthy Living Week
21:22allowed them to reflect
21:24on their own journeys
21:25So my situation is a little bit different
21:27so my parents actually started up the school
21:29and they thought it would be
21:32a really good idea
21:32for me to try it
21:34so I did
21:34and when they were 18
21:36that's when they gave me a choice
21:37of whether I wanted to carry on
21:38and because of all the stuff
21:40it had done to help me
21:40in my life
21:41and tons of aspects
21:44which it really came in handy
21:45I thought
21:47I might as well keep on with it
21:48I've done it this long
21:49and I might as well carry on
21:51Swingate Primary
21:52has been running this tradition
21:54for four years now
21:55and are keen to keep up its success
21:58So we have had really good results
22:00so recently we were really really lucky
22:02to win the Medway Sport Primary School of the Year
22:06and we were actually the reigning winners of that
22:09we won it previously a couple of years ago
22:11so we're really proud of that
22:12we've also just won our quadruple
22:14school games marked gold
22:16which we're really proud of
22:18which you win those things
22:19because you are providing
22:20a variety of physical opportunities
22:23for your children
22:24and making sure that we are encouraging
22:26all that movement
22:27and trying different activities and sports
22:30Even if there are winners
22:32the main purpose of the Healthy Living Week
22:34is to keep pupils active
22:36long after they graduate
22:38and teach them
22:39it's not whether you win or lose
22:41it's how you play the game

22:57including this one
22:58about a big band in Mini Margate
23:00on the small stage
23:01It was a rock star entrance
23:04for one of Britain's biggest bands
23:07now also one of Margate's smallest
23:10as they came to visit
23:11a Hornby tribute
23:13at the station
23:14ahead of their headline
23:16Dreamland set
23:17Big station
23:18you've got millions of people
23:19pass through here every summer
23:20so we thought let's do it
23:21but let's kind of localise it
23:23let's make it a miniature version
23:24of Margate
23:25so it's all brilliant
23:26but one thing that was missing
23:27was a band's goal on the stage
23:29and obviously there's lots of great acts
23:30that play here every summer
23:32and we thought who would be the best band
23:34and Libertines was a no-brainer for us
23:36because obviously their local connection
23:37the likely lads have become local heroes
23:40here in the coastal town
23:42with members making Thanet their home
23:45throughout the years
23:47yeah
23:47yeah yeah
23:48do you know what
23:49I think they've caught it
23:50they've caught it
23:50the sort of you know
23:51the little furrowed brow
23:52and the grey stubble
23:54yeah
23:54I'm very impressed
23:56you know
23:57Hornby
23:58like Margate itself
24:00is
24:01the stuff of British legend
24:03do you know what I mean
24:03so it's
24:04it's a no-brainer really
24:06it's absolute joy
24:07and an honour
24:07every single person
24:08in the Dreamland replica
24:10has been scanned in
24:12in a machine
24:13just like the one behind me
24:15including
24:16the Libertines themselves
24:17and I want to give it a go
24:19because
24:20while I may not be a rock star
24:21I still think
24:22I can add a little bit of something
24:24to the town
24:25it's time to take
24:26a very quick look
24:27at the results
24:28of the scan
24:29and as you can see
24:30you get all the details
24:32the wrinkles
24:33the pattern of my shirt
24:35they use 105 different cameras
24:39to get this level
24:40of fidelity
24:41and while I may want them
24:43they've slightly trimmed down
24:44my belly
24:45in post
24:46and if it's good enough
24:47for the Libertines
24:48it's good enough
24:49for me
24:50they're absolutely fantastic
24:51we scanned them back in Bayer
24:53clearly have such a love for music
24:55they kept wanting to
24:56play their instruments
24:57while they were being scanned
24:58yeah
24:59it was amazing
24:59they seem like such lovely people
25:01but the boys in the band
25:03had a busy day ahead of them
25:05with not only a sold out show
25:07but also a big day
25:09down on the football pitch
25:11I've now officially signed
25:12semi-professional papers
25:14for Margate FC
25:15so I was making my
25:17semi-professional debut
25:18yeah
25:19down at the gate
25:20what's your training regimen for it
25:22I've cut down on the cigarettes
25:24I'm only on one pack a day
25:25and no no
25:27just a few touch
25:29a few touchy toes
25:30and like star jumps
25:31and then
25:31quick burst on the aspirin inhaler
25:33and I'll be away
25:34yeah
25:34the miniature railway set
25:36will be at the station
25:38all summer
25:39a suitable tribute
25:40for a band known
25:42for going off the rails
25:44and then getting back
25:45on track
25:46Ollie Lieder
