Brazil coach Ancelotti sentenced to one year in prison for tax fraud

Ancelotti has been coaching Brazil's national football team since May this year. A Spanish court handed him a sentence of one year in prison and a hefty fine for committing tax fraud during his first term as Real Madrid manager in 2014.

00:00One year in prison. This is the sentence a Spanish court handed to Brazil's national football team coach Carlo Ancelotti on Thursday.
00:10Ancelotti was sentenced for tax fraud he committed during his time as manager for Real Madrid in 2014.
00:16Brazil's coach Carlo Ancelotti was sentenced by a Spanish court to one year in prison in a tax fraud case on Wednesday.
00:23The court also fined the coach in more than $450,000. Spanish prosecutors wanted to arrest the Brazil coach for four years and nine months in two counts of tax fraud.
00:33Ancelotti was accused of hiding money in shell companies in 2014 and 2015 when he was Real Madrid's coach.
00:40Ancelotti's legal team welcomed the decision because in Spain a judge can suspend the sentence of less than two years for first-time offenders.
00:47The court also agreed that Ancelotti was not formally a Spanish resident in 2015.
00:54While Ancelotti is likely to pay a hefty fine, it is unclear whether he will actually serve time in jail.
01:01His tax fraud sentence is however not the only one in the world of top football clubs.
01:06The 66-year-old Italian who works here at the Brazilian Soccer Confederation headquarters is one more soccer star involved in tax evasion cases.
01:17That includes also superstars Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and coach José Mourinho.
01:25Ancelotti left Real Madrid after second stint at the club and joined Brazil's national team as trainer in May this year.
01:31Brazil's football confederation has not publicly commented on the court's ruling.
