00:00The recent surge in illegal migration to the island of Crete has led the Greek government

00:08to take stricter measures to tackle the problem.

00:13On Wednesday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced after a meeting with

00:18Minister of Migration Policy Thanos Plevres a series of emergency measures to deal with the crisis.

00:24The Greek government will temporarily suspend the processing of asylum applications

00:29for migrants arriving from Africa, initially for three months.

00:45The second decision is to establish one or possibly two permanent closed detention centers

00:50for migrants on the island of Crete.

00:55Mitsotakis also said the government's discussions with Libya are ongoing.

00:59He also warned that the Greek armed forces are willing to cooperate with Libyan authorities

01:05in order to prevent boats from leaving from Libya.

01:08The Greek government will send a statement of certainty that the agreement will close to Greece
