00:00Oddeł Halim
00:02Kupia became
00:04My sanctuary
00:06I know I go in here
00:08For two or three hours
00:10Nobody's gonna bother me, no phones
00:12If I wanna be here by myself
00:14I'm gonna be here by myself
00:16I think it's very important for me to tell stories
00:18Especially as a Qadalifu maker
00:20And I want to tell stories about
00:22People from my culture
00:26Hello! Welcome to Qadal 365
00:28With me, Adil Halim
00:30This episode is about education
00:32And how learning doesn't always happen
00:34In the classroom
00:36I sat down with ten-time NBA all-star
00:38And three-time Olympic gold medalist Carmelo Anthony
00:40To find out what lessons he's hoping to share
00:42In his new role as FIBA Global Ambassador
00:44Then we stopped by Qumra
00:46The Doha Film Institute's talent incubator
00:48To understand the importance of master classes
00:50For aspiring filmmakers
00:52But first, Lila Humaira is off to the races
00:56To take a different kind of spin on the track
00:58In search of the fastest energy-efficient vehicle
01:02Zobaydah Al-Tamimi is all suited up
01:05And ready to race
01:07A sophomore at the University of Doha
01:09For Science and Technology
01:11Zobaydah is the driver and team leader
01:13Of Wolves Racing EV1
01:15One of a few dozen teams competing
01:17In the Shell Eco-Marathon for Asia Pacific
01:20And Middle East
01:22We had to build a motor controller by our own
01:25Some people take years of experience
01:27To build that motor controller
01:29For us, only four months
01:30With a couple of research
01:31With the doctor's help
01:33We were able to do it
01:34So we were like running the furthest
01:36With the least amount of energy
01:38She's the only one who has competed
01:40In the event before
01:41Representing her school and country
01:43In Indonesia for last year's edition
01:46And coming back this time
01:47It was extra special
01:49Racing on home turf
01:51While the Lusail International Circuit
01:53Is more familiar with the thrilling speeds
01:55Of Formula 1 cars
01:56This time the track is hosting
01:58The first ever edition
01:59Of the Shell Eco-Marathon
02:01Held in the Middle East
02:02They may not go as fast
02:04But these cars are designed and built from scratch
02:07The aim is to clock the fastest time
02:09With the most energy-efficient vehicle
02:11And that process is so rigorous
02:13That for many of the teams competing
02:15Getting the car on the track
02:17Is a win on its own
02:19Celebrating the 40th anniversary
02:21Of Shell Eco-Marathon
02:22Means it's four decades
02:23Of giving the change-makers of tomorrow
02:26An opportunity
02:27To build the world's most energy-efficient cars
02:30And to further their STEM education
02:32And for the students
02:33It is a constant way of learning
02:35They apply their knowledge
02:37Their ingenuity
02:38Their creativity
02:39To an amazing project
02:41That is part of their curriculum
02:43As a team
02:44The aspiring engineers
02:45Decide between
02:46Two main vehicle models to build
02:48Giving them plenty of opportunities
02:50To innovate and be creative
02:52So in Shell Eco-Marathon
02:54If you want to participate
02:55You have to pick a category
02:57That could be urban concept
02:58Which is a vehicle
03:00That looks like a small city car
03:01So it has four wheels
03:03It has lights
03:04Blinkers
03:05Even a windscreen
03:06The other category
03:08Is called prototype
03:09And the vehicles
03:11That belong to this category
03:12Are like a small mini rocket
03:15They normally have three wheels
03:17They're extremely light
03:18And these vehicles
03:19Are those that are really going
03:20For the world record
03:21Not only is the competition robust
03:24The technical scrutiny
03:25Each car or prototype goes through
03:27Is strict and conducted in line
03:29With industry-wide standards
03:31Technical inspection
03:33Is probably the heart of the competition
03:36Before the vehicles go on track
03:37We do check the length
03:39And the size of the car
03:40We do check its weight
03:42And if it has enough visibility
03:44If it has a horn
03:45So that the students can advise
03:48Other competitors on track
03:49That they are overtaking
03:51Beyond the racing and mechanics
03:53Shell Eco-Marathon
03:54Also aims to foster camaraderie
03:56And friendship
03:57Between young engineers
03:58From all over the world
04:00Further bolstering
04:01International collaboration
04:03And exchanging ideas
04:05Win or lose
04:06Everyone stands a chance
04:07To gain a memorable experience
04:09From the Shell Eco-Marathon
04:11Just like I did
04:12Taking a spin in a vehicle
04:14Of a previous competition winner
04:16Around the Lucille International circuit
04:19Carmelo Anthony is a ten-time
04:23NBA all-star
04:24And three-time
04:25Olympic gold medalist
04:26And will enter the
04:27Hall of Fame this year
04:28The Holy Grail
04:29Of basketball elites
04:31During his 19-year career
04:32Carmelo is one of the most
04:33Prolific scorers
04:34Of his generation
04:35And currently ranks
04:3610th all-time
04:37In NBA scoring
04:38In his new role
04:39As FIBA's Global Ambassador
04:41Carmelo hopes to grow
04:42The game internationally
04:43And with two years left
04:44Until Qatar hosts
04:45The 2027
04:46Basketball World Cup
04:47The Hall of Famer
04:48Arrived in Doha
04:49To kick off the festivities
04:50Respect
04:52Mello
04:53Welcome to Doha
04:54Nice to meet you
05:01From Hoodie Mello
05:02To Hall of Fame Mello
05:03Your name is now
05:04Cemented in history
05:05Alongside the greats
05:06Like Michael Jordan
05:07And Kobe Bryant
05:08These are international names
05:09That people know
05:10And now
05:11People know Mello
05:12You're in that stratosphere
05:13I think those names
05:14That you just mentioned
05:16Were guys
05:17That took advantage
05:19Of the opportunity
05:21To go international
05:24Go global
05:25Michael did it
05:27You know
05:28Kind of 92
05:29Kind of established
05:30You know
05:31What the USA
05:32Basketball
05:33On the world stage
05:35And somebody like Kobe
05:36Was somebody who was
05:37Constantly went overseas
05:38Traveled overseas
05:39Built his international community
05:43His fan base
05:44Alright
05:45You know
05:46They left the door open
05:47For somebody else
05:48And I took it
05:49Took the opportunity
05:50Now the world saw Mello
05:51In a thobe
05:52Yeah yeah big time
05:53But that's organic
05:54That's
05:55That you understand
05:56You know
05:57What that means to me
05:58Yeah and it's
05:59It's an opportunity for me
06:00To continue to spread
06:01And you know
06:03Get my global game on
06:04What can fans expect
06:06What's to come in 2027
06:07Here in Qatar
06:08Yeah I think the fans
06:09Going to see it
06:10I think they
06:11You know
06:12They want to know
06:13What it is
06:14I think Qatar
06:15Will do a job
06:16Of delivering
06:17An experience that
06:18People haven't had in a long time
06:19And for me to be a part of that
06:21And showing the rest of the world
06:23And even showing you know
06:24Back where we at
06:25In America
06:26That it's not just about
06:28America
06:29You know
06:30It's other places
06:31Other regions around the world
06:32Who's actually
06:33Taking the seeds that
06:35You know
06:36America's planted
06:37And growing them globally now
06:38So we're seeing those
06:39Those seeds blossom now
06:41Now we all know
06:42Hall of Fame
06:43Carmelo Anthony
06:44But Young Mello's journey
06:46Was anything but easy
06:47You know
06:48Take us back to the early days
06:49In Red Hook
06:50Brooklyn and then
06:51Eventually Baltimore
06:52So it was very
06:53It was very difficult
06:54Kind of navigating those walls
06:56And navigating
06:57That world
06:58I'll take my hat off to
07:00My mom for
07:01You know
07:02It was always
07:03We gonna be alright
07:04We gonna be okay
07:05We gonna figure it out
07:06And she always did
07:07So that you know
07:08Those morals and standards
07:09That was instilled to me
07:11At an early age
07:12They were never gonna work
07:13So when you come out of that
07:14You have a different
07:15Understanding
07:16Of what it means
07:17To go through
07:18Or live in situations
07:19Like that
07:20Or go through daily
07:21Occurrences
07:22So
07:23That part of my life
07:24Really jump started
07:25And made me understand
07:26Why I'm here today
07:28You recently gave
07:29A commencement speech
07:30At Syracuse
07:31Where you won a national championship
07:32Your son is gonna go
07:33In the fall
07:34Just take us through
07:35What you wanted to relate
07:36To that class
07:37I've been here before
07:38I walked in those shoes
07:40But it's your time now
07:42Because now you are going on
07:44To whatever is next
07:45Right
07:46And you're not gonna have
07:47It figured out
07:48You're not gonna understand it
07:49You're not gonna know it
07:50But don't let nobody
07:51Keep you in the box
07:52Don't just
07:53You know
07:54Get stuck on one
07:55Experience
07:56Go through the journey
07:57And you're still young
07:59Right
08:00So don't
08:01Don't box yourself in
08:03At 20 years old
08:0421 years old
08:05Because you will have
08:06Multiple paths
08:07And multiple
08:08Kind of experiences
08:09In life
08:12The FIBA Basketball World Cup
08:14Is an exciting event
08:15For us to look forward to
08:16But now
08:17Let's head to the
08:18Doha Film Institute's
08:19Flagship Talent Incubator
08:21Kumra brings together
08:22More than 250
08:23Film industry professionals
08:24From over 50 countries
08:25To mentor
08:26Emerging filmmakers
08:28Making it the largest
08:29And most diverse
08:30Gathering to date
08:31I went to check it out
08:34Jamal Al Kanji
08:35Is producing his first
08:36Feature length documentary
08:38But the first time
08:39Qatari filmmaker
08:40Is no stranger
08:41To high pressure situations
08:43As a cardiac surgeon
08:44For more than a decade
08:45He's used to calling the shots
08:47Still
08:48Participating in the
08:49Doha Film Institute's
08:50Kumra Mentorship Program
08:52Has been invaluable
08:53It's been amazing
08:54I mean
08:55I wouldn't have dreamed
08:56To be where I am today
08:57If it was not
08:58For Doha Film Institute
08:59They've been supportive
09:00They nourished us
09:01They loved the idea
09:02From the beginning
09:03They supported it
09:04Financially
09:05And with expertise
09:06This edition of Kumra
09:07Features 27 feature length
09:09Films
09:1010 series
09:11And 12 short films
09:12At different stages
09:13Of development
09:14Production
09:15And post production
09:16Jamal's film
09:17About spearfishing
09:18Is a passion project
09:19Currently in early post production
09:22It's a wonderful opportunity
09:23Really for me
09:24As a Qatari director
09:25Because I think
09:26These platforms
09:27Give us the opportunity
09:28To basically
09:29Tell our stories
09:31And to show
09:32That this region
09:33Can produce different stories
09:34As well
09:35Away from the kind
09:36Of stereotypical kind
09:37Of stories
09:38That are associated
09:39From the region
09:40The Film Institute's CEO
09:41Agrees
09:42And says
09:43Kumra has given
09:44Emerging regional filmmakers
09:45To tell their stories
09:46To the world
09:47A safe space
09:48Where they can come
09:49Share their projects
09:50Share their thoughts
09:51And stories
09:52With industry
09:53From literally
09:54From all over the globe
09:55Where they can be discovered
09:57Where they can be supported
09:58In different stages
09:59Of their films
10:00From the global south
10:02To the global stage
10:03Kumra builds
10:04On the Doha Film Institute's
10:05Commitment
10:06To supporting
10:07Underrepresented
10:08Storytellers
10:09Especially from Asia
10:10Africa
10:11And Latin America
10:12Of the 49 selected projects
10:1416 are from Qatar
10:16Which the DFI
10:17Says
10:18Showcases the growth
10:19In the country's
10:20Film industry
10:21That growth
10:22Is assisted by
10:23International film industry
10:24Experts
10:25Hong Kong filmmaking
10:26Legend
10:27Johnny To
10:28Who didn't go to film
10:29School himself
10:30Came to Doha
10:31To deliver a master class
10:32I always tell the young people
10:34You have to finish
10:36Finish your script first
10:38I cannot tell you
10:40What is the good way
10:41To like me
10:43I only tell you
10:44Go the normal way
10:45I have a very long experience
10:48To shooting
10:49On set
10:50Many, many years
10:52You can change it
10:53When you shoot
10:54But you must
10:55Very sure
10:56What are you talking about
10:58The goal of the Talent Incubator
11:01Is to help develop
11:02New voices in Arab
11:03And global cinema
11:04Qatari filmmaker
11:06Maryam Al-Mohamed
11:07Hopes to spark conversations
11:08By amplifying
11:09Underrepresented voices
11:10The twenty year old
11:12Received a DFI production grant
11:14And says events
11:15Like Qumra
11:16Really open doors
11:17For filmmakers
11:18Like herself
11:19A lot of people
11:20Come from around the world
11:21And very, very important people
11:23So it's one of the only events
11:25Where you can really interact
11:27With these people
11:28Face to face
11:29And one on one
11:30And it's
11:31We've been getting
11:32A lot of knowledge
11:33And experience
11:34From aspiring engineers
11:35To emerging filmmakers
11:36With a basketball hall of famer
11:37Sharing some gems
11:38Along the way
11:39We hope you enjoyed this episode
11:40But that's all the time
11:41We have for now
