Welcome one all to an episode of the Press Box my name is Ben Hand and you're
00:10
alongside me once again is Ryan Bentley and Josh Partridge it's a an extra
00:15
special episode of the Press Box today it's certainly an end of an era won't
00:19
ever be the same after this episode we have sadly got to wave goodbye to our
00:24
wonderful producer cameraman editor sting producer and also a council podcast
00:31
host Aaron Smith he's off to new new horizons but we will of course miss him
00:38
and this Press Box will be worse off without his his presence you two I'm
00:43
sure you agree and as a dedication for all the hard work he's done with all the
00:48
stings and all the different camera angles and everything in between we are
00:53
dedicating this week's numerology to our favorite person Aaron Smith
01:03
so I tried to come up with a bit of an Aaron Smith special for episode 94 for
01:11
those playing along at home all black Aaron Smith so the same name the the
01:19
lesser-known Aaron Smith I would suggest than our very own became the tenth
01:24
person to reach a hundred test caps for the all blacks a very prestigious effort
01:29
and of course if you had a hundred and ten that equals 110 you're thinking that
01:34
doesn't equal 94 what do you what are you talking about so luckily he his current
01:41
club Toyota the Blitz the well-known Toyota Blitz he has played 16 games for and of
01:47
course if you get a hundred and ten and minus 16 that equals 94 so one of my very
01:54
best numerologies in dedication for our one of our very best producers so there
01:59
you go Aaron we do have to go into what is a really busy show though rep footy was
02:04
the course of the day on Saturday Josh and Ryan now I'm gonna start with you Ryan it
02:11
began at Campbelltown with the women with the NTFA just give us a quick rundown I
02:16
suppose how that game unfold and what are the what is the takeaways yeah so it's a
02:21
tough day for the NTFA women lost 78 to 3 SFL were far too good know a few
02:28
positives Meryn Dickinson OLS her first season with OLS then best on ground for
02:33
NTFA I thought her and she for Clark were both really good across half back but I
02:38
think the main takeaway is it's it's a learning opportunity it's a good
02:41
opportunity to get a bunch of girls together around a high performance
02:46
environment with coaches like Bobby Beams and Adrian Collins and hopefully learn
02:49
some things and it's set a very it was a really nice opener for your men's game
02:54
yeah exactly and I think we should be mentioned is that women's team was missing
02:59
probably it was by by no means I think the strongest team that was possible out and
03:03
that was for a number of reasons that I think the NTFA hoping to address going
03:07
forwards then there was the men's game a far closer affair Lachie Dorn off the
03:11
men's coach named it the best game he's been involved with in the last five years
03:16
I tend to see where he's coming from it was a really really high quality game of
03:21
football Josh it was a lot of swings and roundabouts obviously there's a bit of a
03:25
hill at Campbelltown so a lot of the goals were kicked towards the southern end
03:27
down the hill twice the NTFA had to come back from big deficits including a 36 point
03:34
margin halfway through the third quarter it was a highly emotional game of footy we were
03:38
sat near the south bench and they weren't through with some of the umpiring they
03:43
weren't through with some things going on what a shame back and forth between the
03:47
the trainers and the crowd and and what have you but when Jordan Talbot kicks a goal from
03:51
the boundary rather Dom Sheed like is how I described it and then you know Matthew
03:57
McKinnon goes and does the the Leo Barry act not once but twice um it was a a remarkable
04:03
game of footy high in emotion and it was a great celebration um and I suppose that does
04:10
bring me on to you know the landmark segment um and that is Haney's hard hitters
04:14
there's been a lot of I suppose debate about these rep games and you know the the positives and the
04:25
negatives you look at um the you know how it's taken away from I suppose maybe the the smoothness
04:31
of the leagues but it's also been maybe a test to showcase some skills in in new environments
04:36
has this year's rep games the way it's panned out been a success Josh yeah I think they have
04:44
I think um like that's keeping players here I think especially with the with the Premier League
04:50
ones I think that's it's keeping players um here in Tassie whereas if they weren't able to I guess
04:56
test themselves at the higher level um they wouldn't be here I suppose especially against the
05:00
SFL uh it kind of looked like that difference between uh the the week to week footy and the
05:06
rep footy was almost too much and I think that's that shows where the NTFA as a whole competition
05:11
needs to get to yeah and you're right yeah I think it's really positive the community league I think
05:16
was a great idea to involve some of those players who wouldn't necessarily play rep football if they
05:21
were playing division one other years so involving those guys and also for Premier League as well like
05:25
North Launceston Launceston players they play one competitive game in every five so to have a couple
05:30
of extra competitive games can't hurt yeah the state rep games of course adding on to that um which we'll be
05:35
we'll be about to get to um as you say they're required um whether whether we like them or not
05:40
I think they're required to sustain football what in between the the state league and the VFL team
05:47
uh and then yeah speaking of which uh we'll go to quickly to your uh Taz and Queensland rap uh it was
05:54
an unfortunate day for Tasmania but I suppose Queensland had to get one up on us at some stage
05:58
yeah so I spent the day at La Trobe uh on Saturday uh the Queensland women won by 42 points
06:03
against the Tassie best on ground was Libby Haynes uh one of the coastal girls a lot of the
06:08
coastal girls were really good um the likes of Sarah Skinner, Olivia Smith, Shania Sayward but uh
06:13
Jaslyn Freestone was really good uh in for the northern girls playing second rock and and just
06:18
producing all around the ground uh then went into the men's game they went down by 38 points uh it
06:24
was 35 points at quarter time so they kind of they kept within them for the next three quarters but
06:29
um as we talked about then the the gap between the week to week footy and then the rep footy
06:35
of the state footy is on top of that even more and that was that was evident um within the first
06:40
quarter Queensland just got the jump on them um and then that was it but Brad Cox Goodger was once
06:44
again or not once again it was the first time he's received that best on ground honour for Tasmania
06:49
so he just keeps adding things to his list that he does and um yeah he's obvious as I said within my
06:54
story the other day probably going to be a first ballot hall of famer when his career is all over
06:58
yeah remarkable player and with the rep footy flavour in mind we're going to go back to a
07:03
segment that has been lost in the wilderness for a little while but uh has been promised to come
07:07
back bigger and better than ever and that is of course Ryan's extremely difficult sports quiz
07:12
yes it has returned apparently I've never watched a segment before but it has returned so
07:24
very simple question for you guys NTFA division one men's has probably been the most competitive
07:29
division in the NTFA very simple average margin in NTFA division one and I say not winning margin
07:37
because there has been one draw this year yes uh I'm gonna go with 22 points I'm gonna go 36
07:47
well Josh you're a good man it was 34.9 wow very good from Josh congratulations Josh that's a high
07:59
honour I imagine for you that's a great win speaking of high honours we will finish the show off on a high
08:04
as we always like to do and that is of course with Josh's local hero of the week
08:09
well a high honour too Josh now a high honour delivered by Josh uh this goes to Jordan Talbot who
08:22
as we said before took the uh no you didn't take the mark he kicked the goals uh he kicked the goal
08:27
at the end of the game it was Dom Sheedlike that won the NTFA uh their rep game over the weekend so
08:32
congratulations Jordan and uh well done heaps of praise but that is of course the greatest honour
08:37
of the lot and that is all we have time for thank you once again Aaron for your hard work
08:42
and we'll see you guys for the next one
