00:00This drone footage shows the Guadalupe River in Central Texas after floods swept across
00:05the region on the 4th of July weekend. More than a hundred people have been reported dead
00:10in the disaster. At a vigil for the victims in San Antonio, locals were concerned about
00:16the same thing happening again.
00:19I'm also pretty shocked on the gravity of the situation and how big it was. I wouldn't
00:26necessarily expect that our rivers would rise so quickly and I am concerned about
00:32the infrastructure and the need for good infrastructure to be there so that this
00:36doesn't happen and hopefully there's preventative efforts happening in
00:40similar areas to make sure nothing to this degree happens.
00:45At least 27 children and councillors died at Camp Mystic, a Christian girls summer camp on
00:51the banks of the Guadalupe. They were engulfed by the rising waters as they slept in their
00:55tents. Two camp councillors who survived the storm described a harrowing experience.
01:02It was something no one expected. The rain continued all day and that's when we started
01:08to see that the waterfront, where our river area was, was crumbling. It was full of dirt
01:13and mud.
01:16It was full of furniture from other camps.
01:19It was full of branches and that's when all the girls started to realise that something
01:23was wrong and that something was happening and of course they started asking questions.
01:30Ten girls and one councillor are still unaccounted for at the camp. Critics say that an early
01:35warning siren system, which was rejected by local officials in 2016, could have saved the
01:41lives of those who perished.
