00:00Gambling is just as addictive and menacing as narcotics or legal drugs,
00:04especially and if the games are accessed in the inconspicuous places of cyberspace
00:09where juveniles and minors can freely enter and engage.
00:13Thus, the president has set his sights fixed on the gambling menace raging online,
00:17as our Kenneth Paciente reports.
00:21President Ferdinand R. Marcus Jr. is closely monitoring online gambling in the country.
00:26According to the palace, the president is aware of the potential harms that gambling can cause to individuals who became addicted to it.
00:34Thus, Malacanang is open to the possibility of imposing taxes on online gambling.
01:16It can be recalled that Finance Secretary Ralph Rectos said the agency is studying the imposition of taxes on digital gambling platforms
01:23to control public access to online gambling.
01:26Several bills have also been filed to regulate or possibly ban online gaming in the country,
01:32which the president is said to be reviewing.
01:50In line with this, the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas or BSP is expected to issue a circular
01:56aimed at protecting users of digital platforms from the dangers of online gambling.
02:00As of now, the BSP has distributed the draft of the said circular
02:04and is currently consulting stakeholders for their feedback and suggestions.
02:08Under the proposal, BSP-supervised institutions or BSIS such as banks and electronic money issuers
02:15would be required to implement stricter measures to protect users of their digital platforms from online gambling.
02:22Among these measures is the imposition of limitations on user access to gaming sites or apps.
