00:34And the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries agreed to increase crude oil production by 548,000 barrels per day.
00:47Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:06In Brazil, the BRICS Business Forum meets Saturday to address crucial issues for sustainable economic development with emphasis on energy transition, decarbonization,
01:15skills development and the economy. High on the agenda will be such topics as strengthening trade, food security and financing strategies for development.
01:26This meeting has been summoned by the National Industry Confederation BRICS Business Council Coordinating Body, the Women's Business Alliance and by private sector groups from BRICS member countries.
01:37This coming Sunday, July 6th and Monday, July 7th, Rio de Janeiro will host the BRICS Summit, a political and diplomatic forum for articulating policies in the Global South.
01:49Since January this year, Brazil took over the presidency of the bloc with the mission of promoting discussions on inclusive global governance, artificial intelligence and financing to combat climate change.
02:01Brazilian President Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva speaking at the BRICS Economic Forum made reference to the current conflicts in the world and said this BRICS Summit could provide solutions.
02:17We see words and conflicts accumulated and those are part of the responsibilities of the head of the state and government. Lack of leadership worsened all crises facing our societies. I'm confident that this forum and the BRICS Summit, which will begin tomorrow, will provide solutions.
02:41Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Anguar Ibrahim reiterated his commitment to the independence of the countries of the Global South.
02:53I view this conference very positively. We are not complaining. We are making demands.
03:03For those who believe in unilateral actions, tariff and protectionism, here we have a voice for multilateralism, for collaboration working with countries of the South and in contact with countries of the North as friends.
03:22In this alliance, we want to ensure that we speak for a position of strength, not for witness, not as former colonies, but as independent countries.
03:41On the other hand, the BRICS People's Council concluded its first in-person summit in Rio de Janeiro with a compelling document that seeks to redefine the bloc's priorities.
03:51Towards an anti-imperialist sovereign agenda centered on people's rights.
03:56In an unprecedented move, popular movements will have an official forum to present their agendas directly to the bloc's head of state.
04:05The initiative will take place this Sunday, the 6th in Rio de Janeiro, during the plenary session of the BRICS Summit, which will be held under the Brazilian presidency of the group in 2025.
04:16Brazilian João Pedro Estetlio, from the National Coordination of the Landless Rural Workers Movement will speak on behalf of the BRICS People's Council.
04:27It is made up of social movements, units, academics and civil society from the 10 BRICS member countries.
04:34In the event, the National Secretary of the United Indigenous Movement of Venezuela, Cesar Carias, requested before the Popular Council of the BRICS in Rio de Janeiro that the indigenous peoples and social movements of Venezuela feel like BRICS.
04:53We the people and social movement of Venezuela are BRICS. We feel like BRICS. We appreciate this invitation. We request with great respect that the veto imposed on our country be eliminated. And that our voices not to be silenced. The indigenous peoples and social movements of Venezuela are BRICS. We feel like BRICS. We appreciate this invitation. We request with great respect that the veto imposed on our country be eliminated.
05:15And that our voices and that our voices not to be silenced. The indigenous peoples and social movements of Venezuela want to be included in the BRICS. We also believe that it is time to fight the hegemony of the dollar and that entire capitalist systems that in some other way is killing our Mother Earth.
05:44The New Development Bank highlights the importance of international transactions in local currency as a mechanism for achieving independence from the U.S. dollar. At a press conference, the president of the New Development Bank, Dilma Rousseff, said this new bank seeks to end dependence on the U.S. dollar among countries in the global south.
06:07Rousseff spoke about the bank's importance in international economy as it promotes social projects and programs for bloc member countries. To this date, the New Development Bank has approved over 120 projects estimated at US$40 billion in areas like energy transportation, ecology and water supply.
06:37Carnival season in San Vincent and the Granarines is underway. Our special envoy in the Caribbean island, Belén de los Santos, tells us more.
07:01Carnival has always been key to Caribbean and Latin American culture. It speaks of the regional ties and the sheer history that brings these people together in a celebration that every year comes back to highlight that local spirit.
07:16Carnival became most matured in Trinidad and Tobago in the mid-19th century because you have a number of migratory movements to Trinidad.
07:26People from St. Vincent and the Grandines, from Grenada, from the French-speaking territories.
07:32And of course, because Trinidad is so close to Venezuela, we have the Calypso moving across from Venezuela into Trinidad and Tobago. And there it makes its way back to the other territories.
07:45Carnival is a time of free up. It was like the end where slavery, where the slaves celebrate. It's their time of celebration. So we still celebrate it. So anyone who has experienced it, it's a time when you forget your worries for like the, well, we have 10 days of carnival. So we say forget your worries for the 10 days.
08:08In St. Vincent and the Grenadines, many of the local bands and its artists work hard to keep up the Vincentian tradition of artisan costume making that sets Vince MS apart.
08:20The locals look to tell a story in the streets through their work that speaks to their history and identity.
08:27What you see in Brazil, you see in Miami, you see in Trinidad, you see in Caravana, you see in New York. You see, and that's not what we want. That's not what we are all about.
08:37What we are all about is, as I said, to tell a storyline, not see one, see all. If you think of the Brazil mass and you think about the Trinidad and everything like that, you just see feathers, different colors, feathers, shape in different ways.
08:52What we try to do, as we say, depict a storyline. And this is something we try to maintain.
08:56I mean, every year, every year, I say this is my last year. But the love for the art, the love for the music, the love for creating things with your hands and then seeing it on the road, Carnival Tuesday, it just gives you this nostalgic feeling that keeps you coming back.
09:17And my first memory of Carnival is actually playing the steel pan with my village band, the Saini Euphonium Steel Orchestra.
09:28So, but the love for this art form keeps me coming back.
09:35Those family ties that make up the local mass bands and their artisan work, together with the love for the music and energetic performances, are what make Vinci's Carnival a must in the region.
09:47With the final costumes ready to go and the high energy music already playing in the streets, Vinci Mes enters its final days of Carnival,
10:15as Kingstown becomes the hottest place in the Caribbean.
10:20Belen de los Santos from Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Granadines for Telesur.
10:25And now we have a short break coming up.
10:27But first remember, you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
10:34Wilbur right back. Stay with us.
10:45Welcome back to From the South.
11:00Venezuela marked the 214th anniversary of Venezuela's independence and Bolivarian National Armed Forces Day with a joint civil military parade led by President Nicolás Maduro.
11:11During his intervention, President Nicolás Maduro honoured Liberator Simón Bolivar and the Patriots, who fought for the independence of the Bolivarian nation against the Spanish Empire.
11:21The Bolivarian leader also recalled the ideas of Venezuela's historical leader, Commander Hugo Chávez,
11:27and highlighted the importance of national unity and the strength of the armed forces to guarantee sovereignty and defend the independence of the country in the face of fascism, extremism and external aggressions.
11:41Soldiers of this homeland, listen.
11:50Beloved people of Venezuela, rebellious people of our America.
11:57Listen, 300 years of colonialism had passed.
12:00The Spanish Empire had sent its best armies, its best generals, its best weapons by the thousands.
12:06We came from the darkness of colonial domination, and in eight years, one month and two days, our liberating fathers with Bolivar at the helm
12:22had built a new revolutionary state, a great American state, a great South American state, the great Colombia.
12:30The people of Cuba joined together on Saturday to commemorate the 214th anniversary of Venezuela's declaration of independence.
12:44The commemorative activities began in the city of Havana with flora offerings before the heroes, Simon Bolivar and José Martí.
12:50The event was attended by the Venezuelan ambassador, Orlando Maneiro, and the president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Fernando González.
13:00The Venezuelan diplomat highlighted the historical significance of July 5th of 1811,
13:07the date on which young Venezuelans reaffirmed the sovereignty of their country against the colonial troops of the Spanish Empire.
13:13San Vincent and the Grenadines joined the celebration of Venezuela's independence with a cultural event that highlighted cultural ties in the Caribbean region.
13:28Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves underscored the importance of fostering solidarity among peoples, just like Venezuela's liberator, Simon Bolivar, did.
13:36The Venezuelan embassy organized the event, which celebrated the bonds of solidarity and cooperation between the two countries.
13:48In other news, the 10th plenary session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba convened on Saturday to celebrate the 9th PCC Congress.
13:57The party's most important event will be held from April 16th to 19th, 2026, and its slogan will be
14:05the Congress of all. It will coincide with a celebration of the centenary of the birth of Fidel Castro Ruz,
14:12the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, whose legacy guides the work of the party in the country.
14:18The call was announced on the last day of the 10th plenary session of the Central Committee,
14:24which has been meeting since Friday in Havana with the aim of continuing to build the future of the country.
14:35In Haiti, at a press conference, local social organizations have denounced the inaction and inability
14:42of the Transitional Presidential Council to address the country's security crisis.
14:47During a visit by the ALBA movement's international alliance,
14:51Haitian social groups said that the current authorities only care about the United States' imperialist interest,
14:58hence contributing to the social and economic destruction of Haiti,
15:02and they warned about Washington's hegemonic policies against sovereign nations.
15:07On its part, the ALBA movement's international alliance seeks to strengthen communication networks
15:13to fight against the international isolation of the Haitian people.
15:17In Peru, a recently issued decree by the executive branch making a monthly salary increase for President Dina Buluarte official
15:29has spurred criticism throughout the country.
15:33Several legislators are opposing the measure, like Congresswoman Sigrid Bazan,
15:37representing the popular Democratic bloc, who has introduced a bill to have it annulled.
15:43Meanwhile, Congressman Jaime Quito, representing Peru Libre, announced that he is also working on a similar initiative.
15:51Legislators from different benches are evaluating legal ways to annul the measure,
15:56whereas people on the streets say the president is trying to secure for herself a $10,000 pension.
16:02In Chile, citizens mobilized in the framework of the day for the defense of decent health
16:12after years of social struggle led by grassroots organizations in Valparaíso.
16:18The 4th of July is a date born of pain and resistance after the death of Amelia Salazar-Jorquera,
16:24an infant of one year and eight months, who died of pneumonia in 2018 after a pediatrician decided to deny her hospitalization.
16:34In this sense, the Chilean authorities could not deny the state of abandonment
16:37and undignified care received by users of the Chilean public health system.
16:43Against this backdrop, citizens gathered in Plaza Victoria in Valparaíso
16:47to begin a march from there to the gates of the National Congress.
16:50Today, July 4, seven years after the death of our daughter Amelia Rayen Salazar,
17:04who died on July 4, 2018 in this hospital, as a result of a series of medical negligences.
17:09Today is a day established in the national calendar.
17:12The state of Chile recognized this day for the defense of dignified health.
17:15It is of vital importance this defense of dignified and public health for us as parents of Amelia
17:21and as organized health users.
17:23We consider that it is important that the state of Chile puts an important accent
17:27in the delivery of resources in the improvement of the health system.
17:30Un acento importante en la entrega de recursos, en la mejora de gestiones.
17:36En los centros de salud ya no hay condiciones para atender.
17:39In the health centers there are no longer conditions to attend patients,
17:43we are still more than 15 hours in a chair waiting for attention.
17:47We believe that health prevention is necessary because it is not possible
17:50that our people continue to die in a waiting list of immense time
17:53more than two or three years waiting.
17:55That is why we are demonstrating.
17:57And we have a second show break coming up.
