00:00welcome to the overreact podcast we are live at what women want 3.0 and it's your girl monica
00:09mohoya and it's your girl lash angela and it's your girl angela one boy and we're so excited
00:14because we actually are sitting and overreacting today with the founder and the visionary behind
00:20the what women want summit none other than pinky gelani hey it's your girl pinky
00:25hey pinky oh my god have fun right yes so what are we overreacting about i mean we're overreacting
00:35about you right now yeah for five minutes realize in into who you are who brought you to this journey
00:44where you've created this amazing platform for hundreds of women right and someone said earlier
00:51this is a movement so you are the movement builder you know what what brought you to this moment i
00:57love all those words i think they're amazing but i always have to keep myself in check so my ego
01:02doesn't get ahead of me i'm always saying that this is bigger than myself it's and it's definitely
01:08guided by something uh higher than myself which is why i feel like it comes together and it creates
01:14that impact because it's really not about pinky um it's so much bigger than that but it's a long
01:20time coming we started in 2017 uh right now yeah we started in the malls with small conversations
01:26westgate yeah thank you yeah and then when covid hit we went online with something similar like this
01:33it was a podcast about sam used to record for us uh sam who's doing my camera right now and um
01:40then when the world opened up again there was something inside me kept saying you got to do this
01:45thing where everybody comes together and i and i couldn't sleep it really was like
01:49wakey wakey wakey and that's what birthed the set and how did you ever imagine that one day
02:00it would get to where it was like last night was amazing oh thank you um and having all those
02:06different women speak they come from very different backgrounds and and they relate to us in very
02:13different ways right um did you ever imagine or did you i mean like for me again i i think when
02:20you have been you know and they said this last night when you have been given a purpose uh you don't feel
02:26like you're doing anything strenuous or it's out of place so for me it's always made sense to me to bring
02:34great african women together yeah and why shouldn't we why shouldn't we have a politician and a sports
02:41person and you know a person in marketing together speaking why should it only be like politicians
02:48at one event and marketers at another event and you know podcasters at another event why not you know
02:56uh everybody share the same space because we're all doing amazing things in our own ways yeah i love the
03:03fact that the summit is a celebration of women and who we are in our essence um but i also believe in
03:09the power of names how did you come to choose the title what women want so um this is such an
03:17interesting question uh remember when i said we were doing stuff in malls i think because of my radio
03:23background i was approached by a mall they're like we want you to do something for women and we want you
03:28to do like a coffee morning and we call it desperate housewives and we talk about lipstick and fashion and i
03:36i looked at them and i said let me just take this information and i'll come back to you because it
03:41just didn't resonate and i i know that women are much more yes we talk about lipstick and fashion but
03:47we talk about so much more yes and we're not desperate yes and we're not all housewives yeah so i didn't like
03:55that term so i sat with it and again i really believing in sitting in silence and praying on things and
04:01meditating and the name just came it's like what do we want what do we want what women want
04:07triple w yeah i thought you're going from the movie the comedy after we started a few um we'd done a few
04:17at the mall and there was and i actually even told them all because they own the cinema yes and i'm like
04:23let's do it together let it be a bit and they were oh yeah with the mail gives oh wow um i had a i had
04:30a question for you because you've transitioned like the what women want to what it is now it was a podcast
04:37then it was in in a month then now of course covid made you think so take us through because you could
04:45have just gone back to doing a podcast right and got a life setting yes how did you decide podcast
04:52summit um oh that shift yeah again it was just that nudge uh i think because of my experience
05:02and you know being a person who's been in the media for a long time having met a lot of powerful women
05:08it's the idea of yes i can call you know one person into a studio and we can have a conversation
05:14but then how do i really bring her to other people aside from just you know how do people touch and
05:22feel her and know that she's she's um an inspiration and easy to talk to yeah because even those five
05:30minutes can change someone's life so that is what made it made it make sense for me because i was like
05:36yeah it's great we can do this it's informative it's educational uh sometimes entertaining but when
05:43you bring like if you and i i think you know like for all of us yesterday to share a space with the
05:50keynote speakers whoever they are and what they've achieved it's such an honor yes you're just like
05:57wow i can't believe i'm on a poster with the same person who's you know made a statement for kenyan
06:04yes so it's that yeah i was so i speaking of that i was when i was watching bad girl millie i was like
06:12damn i'm i'm really like listening to her live live not watching her yeah i'm sorry tiktok
06:19yes or lip syncing or real
06:22that's true yeah but you know content creators would have grabbed her and used that oh yeah
06:29oh yeah absolutely my first tint with women empowerment has your face in my in my brain in
06:37my mind um 2017 when you started uh of course my first time to know pinky was on radio but then you
06:44started bringing women together and then there was us 2019 when we decided to start sister speaks
06:50and now this moment it's like a whole full circle moment for us because i was telling janet earlier
06:57because if you think about you know women of our time yes changing the tide turning the tide it's you
07:03janet and you know the other like-minded uh leaders in this space and it's an honor to even sit here to
07:10just listen to your journey and um in in asking in sharing that how do you feel seeing girls young
07:19women of all ages just curious and out there just curious about you know what women women want
07:26some it has to offer i think um one thing that we have to accept is that the our generations the
07:33younger generations are continuing to evolve even without our participation i know this because i'm
07:40a mother of a 14 year old and and she's here she says yeah she's here yeah she's taller than you
07:46yes so she came up to me she's like you look like you need a hug i mean from a teenager i was like
07:52this girl is very wise so we have to you know someone was saying to me how do you not become
07:57a parent who's like this is how it is and this is the way it should be i think again and this is what
08:03i was talking about at the dinner yesterday once you have self-realization and some form of healing
08:08you then understand that even when the generations who are younger than you are um keen to learn or
08:17whatever you you are able to learn from them you have to be able to be open to that so when you see
08:23the younger generation being keen on learning first of all i wish we had this yeah when i was younger so
08:29when my daughter came in and she's like i just want to beat i'm like no go and sit in the rooms yeah go
08:34and listen because something will resonate and i think the gentleman there was a gentleman on your
08:41podcast who also yeah yeah had a daughter um in the space so it's very important first of all for us
08:49to recognize that the younger generation are individuals they're not kids um they're not they
08:55have opinions and then also to give them the space to um share those opinions so we can learn from them
09:03yeah yeah although they don't know everything they don't know everything but still yeah yeah i love the
09:09aspect of cross uh generational learning yeah it's very powerful it completely you know we just have
09:15to if we stop saying ah that's just a child they're not yeah yeah um as someone that is a business mogul
09:23someone that has so many different moving pieces as a content creator as someone that is hosting the
09:28summit there's so many different things you do pinky right um and i love the fact that you said society
09:33we can't they can't just put women in a box that's one of our taglines and a society that tries to put
09:37women in a box let's overreact that's what we always like to say but um in order not to you know stay
09:43in a box or bow down to titles that society might give us how do you stay grounded with everything you
09:49have going on what is that anchor in your life there's so much it's not just one thing um like i said
09:56earlier there's a lot of prayer in my life there's a lot of stillness and quiet moments and what i'm what
10:03i've intentionally taken out and again one of the speakers at the god gala dinner was talking about
10:08intentional be intentional so what i've intentionally taken out for me is my time so it's not like i i am
10:17unavailable for people when they need me but i on purpose get up much earlier so that i can do my breath
10:26work do my meditation do my prayers and sit in complete silence um whatever that looks like
10:34whether i'm listening to the birds or i'm you know drinking a cup of coffee it's just me myself
10:39and that is what helps me remain ground grounded but i also do grounding like i walk on the earth
10:49barefoot yes which is very important yeah um you know there was something very interesting that i read
10:54that our ancestors didn't have therapists they had the forests yeah the rivers yeah and the outside
11:02yeah and we've forgotten that we've we're always inside we're always we're always wearing shoes we're
11:08always sitting yes we've forgotten how to just be with nature with what you know now what are you
11:14doing differently like if somebody there's somebody out there who also actually you're talking to us
11:20because we're also fostering communities for women uh with the experience that you've had
11:25and even just doing like a summit what are the things that you've learned that now will make you do
11:30it differently even next year yeah i think every year there's always some learning uh what i feel this
11:37the what women run community have been very gracious with us is that they've allowed us to make our mistakes
11:43and they've allowed us to learn and and you know even from this summit there will be a lot of
11:49takeaways what we um continue to do is give them an opportunity to give us feedback because we cannot
11:57sort of present something to the public and go like ah we did it we're done yeah yeah we're amazing
12:03there's always room for improvement i think what you have to do especially if you are in in the space
12:09where you're growing a community is be open to listen to them yes because it really is about what they
12:15want yeah in a society that tend to make women spread themselves so thin a mom a friend a sister
12:24perfection yeah as in everything you name it what's your pause moment how do you pause and and and what's
12:33your uh i'm done like you know you know we uh hands off yeah uh if it crashes it crashes what was your
12:40moment of i'm done and what was your pause moment that has led to who you are sitting here oh they've
12:47been there how long we have a lot i've had a lot of pause moments in my life i've had a lot of moments
12:56that have really um sort of shaken me to my core a lot of moments that have changed me and i feel like
13:06um you know and this is what i tell people who go through grief that grief is actually a rebirth of
13:13yourself you are birthing a new you and that is something you really have to accept yeah uh because
13:19you're you're like why is this so hard this is so tough and it's really just you will never be the
13:24same again when you go through something traumatic so it is really a birth of a new you so
13:29those moments have been plenty in my life and you know i i don't say it like oh or me um it is part
13:38of my journey and it's just again maybe another reason why this summit is so um you know one of the
13:46pillars is healing we have to like teresa said we have to feel it to heal it yeah i think
13:54intentionality in your speakers how do you go about it sometimes i just see your flyers and i'm
13:59like huh is that a good thing good like really good the the intentionality of the speakers this
14:07the range the diversity is so beautiful you get little pieces of everything yeah you know in one
14:14how do you go about it being very intentional in terms of the energy you allow in the room
14:19how you design the whole program it's just powerful i mean we always like i said first of
14:25all we go with feedback what what do people enjoy from our previous events what what are they looking
14:30for what what are the conversations that are current i i know that trying to conceive is huge
14:35and surrogacy is something that people are going through and i i for me it's very confusing because
14:42when i was trying to conceive 14 15 16 years ago i thought by the time we're in 2020s and beyond
14:50it will be a thing of the past because of technology because of medicine but it's become more
14:56prominent yeah and challenges yeah so we just keep our ear to the ground you know this is why we have
15:03our monthly events we're constantly talking to our community and then the beauty about the summit
15:11is that people reach out to us like hey i'm in ai and i want to talk about this hey i'm doing this
15:18like color theory i thought that was fascinating i don't know if you guys went for this in the morning
15:22where you just put colors against you and see what yes matches your complexion you know lipsticks
15:28hair color yeah this is i mean because when a woman knows this stuff she walks differently she
15:36behaves differently she shows up differently if you know that color looks good on you and i know you
15:41know that color pink is such a feel-good color right so i love the theme but at least right around
15:47you're feeling different walking different you know it right and there are days like i wear a gray
15:53sweater and i'm like why do i look sick yes so it's just a little information
15:58like that and then again making sure that you're balancing it it's not all serious like trying to
16:04conceive or divorce but it's also fun you know you're doing a bit of yoga or you're talking about
16:09sex and having you know like learning how to have orgasms by yourself wow i love how the what women
16:18want summit is so many things um you know and simply put we want to ask the founder you know years from
16:25now where do you envision where's the bigger vision for what women want and also what does pinky want
16:32you know we've been asking women throughout our podcasts the summit is called what women want
16:38yeah what does pinky want and what is your vision for this summit um i think with the vision of the
16:44summit i feel like um we need to structure it such that pinky doesn't need to be and i said this
16:51before it doesn't need to be a part of it physically for it in order for it to continue and happen
16:56um i like that and it's really just its own entity eventually i mean i've spoken to you know the likes
17:03of janet wandi akishuru and i've we we always sort of do a think tank and um it's it's evolving to a
17:13stage where it will also be a hands-off so it's not associated um but then it continues um like an
17:21exit strategy no in a sense in a sense you know it's just like it just becomes a thing yes yeah
17:28yeah standalone i think also that came out from our conversation with janet we talked about the
17:35data culture yeah how she's trying to shift the power yeah and it doesn't it will exist with or
17:41without janet exactly yeah i think it's powerful this is where i think also and i keep on saying
17:46and reiterating the fact that once you heal yourself your ego gets a bit silent you're able
17:55to hush that dish yeah what does pinky want is the other question i have a special one for you how long
18:02how long do we have we have forever for you we have keywords there's not time chocolate we have
18:0810 more i want that too um i i really can't say i think what pinky wants changes on a daily if not
18:20hourly basis yeah and that's definitely being a woman yeah yeah um so we're asking all guests um
18:28you have a bag yeah so you might have a physical bag but you could also have an imaginary bag okay
18:34what is that thing that you carry that you need and you use so if it's physical i don't know what
18:38that is it could be also imaginary you could give us both so my physical bag would probably have my
18:46phone in it okay because you know that's my connection to the world it's also my money maker
18:51it's got all my emails there i'm useless at tech but i'm always like trying always trying um my
18:59imaginary bag my imaginary bag um it would have a beautiful ball of pink energy
19:11what does pink energy mean for you it's just love okay complete love so just you know just something
19:17you can reach into reach like for and just feel like okay i'm okay did you always love pink because
19:23of your name do you think you are forced to love pink no at one point i hated it because of my name
19:28yes i was like no i know you know i'm an aquarium so we're rebels everybody's like no it's pinky
19:33favorite color i was like no it's me
19:34you know again as i've healed i've grown to embrace it and it's very on brand yes it is
19:46completely very on brand yeah it is something that's attached to my name forever yes another
19:54question so uh you mentioned that what women wants was once a podcast yeah so we're gonna to
19:59we're going to shift the mic to you and ask us questions oh great question oh wow okay yeah not
20:05putting me on the spot yes okay i've got it my first question is for angela which one um not
20:14okay okay that's great pinky angela yes um so you were once miss kenya usa yes and i i'm asking you
20:23this question because i was asked this yes um by my daughter it's a tough one what made you feel
20:30you were better than everyone else um man damn because you have to believe we need your daughter
20:37on this yeah wow your your daughter she's very introspective she's the old soul for young age
20:43um so i would say uh my journey in pageantry began when i was 17 but i've i never went there feeling like
20:49i was better than other people uh for me pageantry was a place for sisterhood and self-development
20:56i wanted to become a better person so i never went there with them as competitive as pageantry
21:02can be i never went in there with the eye of competition you know i went and i come from a
21:09household of women we're five girls in my family so really i wanted to be watered by other sisters
21:15and water others and i think i've always been in a community that's always watered me so i go
21:21into spaces knowing i'm i'm in my own lane like my sister's not my competition um yeah but pageantry
21:28for me has been a space of sisterhood and self-development yes i love it um so am i asking
21:34you each a question yes okay so i'll ask you the next question um you founded sister speaks
21:41with these two lovely ladies why was it important and why is it important for a sister to speak
21:47how many minutes so i'll keep it very short um 2019 i was coming off from a corporate uh job and
21:58i felt like that job defined who i was so not working anymore i felt like you know a loser so
22:06and i realized i was not the only person who has created an identity outside of themselves so it could
22:13be a woman who is defined by her marriage the car she drives the color of her skin just something
22:19that she has idolized to become her identity and so for us to heal then to share that um so we needed
22:26a space that was very safe for us to be authentic this is how i'm feeling i actually didn't like that
22:32job i hated my colleagues like i needed to just lament and just vent and just feel like me come alive
22:41again and that sister speaks it's like that don't get just regardless yeah speak whether you're
22:48snorting and you're crying it's a safe space for you to come alive and to be who you are and that's
22:54the space we want to live for the generations that will come after us yeah amazing i think it's so
22:59important for women to use their voice now finally yeah i'm saying the best for last yes um i recently did
23:07a video with you on instagram and you sent me a message and you said thank you for making me do this
23:14tell me what about that made you feel like lush oh okay so for context um pinky and i did a video
23:24event of us just dancing and how like over 35 year old dance um so i would never feel myself uh act like
23:35intentionally dancing and posting it out there and just seeing people's comments because they're
23:41still coming and i told you this my mom my mom sent me a screenshot of us and she's like sent me
23:47this video i was like how did you even get this video and um it made me um remove any
23:55any any the way people might see me as somebody who's sharing maybe something about faith or
24:02sharing about what we do it made me just be and let go and forget that there were cameras and
24:08i wasn't acting i was just being because that's how i am with no cameras right with my friends that's
24:14what i would be so it allowed me to just be and just to see that um the responses and and yeah
24:22yeah it just allowed me to be and to be i wish i could be that more in front of the camera
24:28um and maybe that's what i'll eventually get there i think you should yeah we can't wrap this up
24:35without saying what we want okay yes yes anju take it away you gotta put me on first um you were
24:42wearing the thing i literally want to feel the way i look i want to feel good all the time and i want
24:49other women to feel good and empowered and free i think just always being liberated like angie was
24:56saying maybe in front of the camera she can't be that person that's just fun and just living in it
25:01and i think sometimes we get so stuck in the persona that we build that we forget to just authentically
25:07be ourselves so i want to be authentic and always be able to you know find my core all the time yeah
25:14um what do i want well i want more spaces like this for especially younger sisters i think like you said
25:22earlier i if i had this in my 20s i think my who i am now would have come out then a lot earlier so i
25:31would want more spaces like this and i'd want more freedom for without it being a feminism and just
25:38turning it into something toxic um and it's actually it's i would encourage anybody and that's listening
25:46is investing yourself investing attending these kind of events even if you feel it's not for you
25:53honestly you will leave here watered you will leave here watered you'll leave here connected
26:00you'll leave here more alive than you came and fully charged so honestly thank you thank you
26:08what more ones um i want to look back at my life an intentional and well-lived life
26:16and see facets of me not the forgotten parts of me like i don't want life to take take take take from
26:23me take pieces of me and deplete who i am i want to look back when i pause i was like oh more words here
26:30because of my intentionality my action my inspired action there was a shift there was a change and that
26:37looks like what we do with heels for parts is a girl who lives um you know on the donations that
26:43we give to the school uh there are women who feel i'll come alive in the spaces that we create
26:48so i think looking back i just want women to feel free to not just don't get lost in the grind
26:56like it's not worth it and just remember drop your shoulders remind yourself who you are and live
27:03just leave yeah yeah i love that as to end lift up your hand everybody put it at the back whichever
27:09one put it back pat yourself in the back love you girl well done well done well done you faithful servant
27:16yes all right so pinky thank you so much for being with us today thank you for putting on this amazing
27:24summit and allowing us to be a part of this journey with you as well and um in proper overreact fashion
27:30we want you to join us as we sign out so we just say let's and then everyone together overreact
27:37all right so ladies let's overreact
27:49you
