Well, shall I begin?
00:01
Okay, you want to start?
00:02
I also love that in this moment, all the folks with us are getting like a real inside peek
00:08
at the way scene partners work.
00:11
Yeah, that's true.
00:12
This is kind of what we did, you know, back then is to sit and bring all of these questions
00:18
we've been thinking about, you know, into our rehearsal room and our table reads and
00:22
our cast dinners and, you know, mornings over coffee on set.
00:28
It's like this, this is really the fun part about our jobs.
00:32
How did you start to prepare once you first read the script and said, oh, I want to do
00:37
this?
00:38
What was your next order of business to get into character?
00:41
Oh, well, my next order of business is to relate to Tom, not think about how I'm going to play
00:47
Tom.
00:48
I'm thinking about what do I know about Tom and how can I bring something of myself into
00:54
Tom?
00:55
And my hook in was family.
00:58
Love of family.
00:59
I've got two daughters.
01:00
I would fight for them.
01:02
I would die for them.
01:03
And I think there's a lot of that in Tom Truby.
01:07
And he has been, we find out that he's kind of been devastated and lost a bit of his family.
01:13
And here's an opportunity to reclaim a new family.
01:19
And maybe he doesn't do it in the best way, but it's out of, it's out of love and need
01:27
and fear and grief and obsession.
01:30
So I found all of those things to, to, to, to start with Tom.
01:34
Where did you start with Allie?
01:36
Yeah, I am similarly to you.
01:39
I think figuring out what I understand about someone, even as, as you were saying, you know,
01:45
even if they're doing something that you could call wrong, you know, how do you understand
01:52
the motivation and the way you talk about Tom's humanity?
01:56
For me, I had to really unpack who Allie is.
02:01
I had to unpack what her journey has been.
02:04
I, I had to, um, as myself, even look at some of the things that this character criticizes
02:13
about herself.
02:15
And I hated some of that for her.
02:18
You know, there, there are things that she brings up in the story.
02:21
I don't want to give any spoilers, but where I thought you didn't do anything wrong there,
02:25
you know, and don't you see?
02:27
And I, I caught myself wanting to support this person.
02:31
And I said, Oh, I'm the hooks are in.
02:33
I care.
02:34
I care about this family.
02:35
I care about their struggles.
02:37
And then what I, what I always make sure I have to do is come to terms with both what
02:43
I relate to a character on and what I don't and ensure that I can deconstruct any favoritism
02:51
on this end of the spectrum and any judgment on this end of the spectrum and really just
02:56
figure out how to put a, a nuanced, complicated human being together.
03:03
And then I think something that was really impactful for me, I mean, a couple of things,
03:09
understanding this, uh, question of identity and family, you know, my partner's kids are
03:14
adopted.
03:15
My best friend's son is my godson.
03:18
Obviously I did not give birth to him, but I would, I would literally give up my life
03:24
for that kid.
03:25
I have two friends who have a gorgeous, gorgeous family and both of their children, they adopted
03:33
through the foster care system.
03:35
And I watched them fight for years for those children.
03:40
And I got to ask them about what it felt like to have raised them, you know, from the time
03:48
they were little babies and spend years not knowing if their, if their children would stay
03:53
their children, what that limbo felt like, what that journey was like, how they held on to
03:59
their humanity, how they didn't just die from the anxiety and the fear.
04:04
And it was so gorgeous to have people share, you know, all of these, these journeys and
04:11
these experiences, because then I got to think about, you know, imagine being trapped in that
04:18
limbo that I know my friends were in, for example, imagine the limbo hitting you when
04:22
your kid's 15, it all, all the information, all of the experiences, you know, the, the way
04:29
we build our modern families, all of it became really beautiful, um, fuel to understand, you
04:39
know, that yes, biology is something and also family is what you make it.
04:44
And it, it colored the story for me in a really cool way.
04:50
Okay.
04:50
I have a good one.
04:51
Speaking of, you know, the fandom that's excited about this crossover, because one of the things
04:57
that I loved the most about working on One Tree Hill, and that I know the fans loved was
05:02
my character's arc.
05:05
She really got to start as one thing and then evolve into something, um, that I loved that
05:12
felt different.
05:13
And you got to do something really similar playing Luke on the OC.
05:19
Do you think that was the moment in time?
05:22
Do you think we both just got lucky with storyline?
05:27
Like what was the journey for you with, with carrying him through his arc?
05:33
Well, I, you know, I think I got cast as Luke because I looked a certain way.
05:37
Okay.
05:38
You know, I was on Abercrombie bags and, you know, underwear modeling.
05:42
And there was a, they even put a joke in the script about like, Hey, Abercrombie, you know?
05:47
So I was very sort of stereotypically this guy that they wanted to look like Luke, um, you
05:55
know, but our first season, I think was like 25 episodes.
05:58
It's a lot of episodes.
05:59
And we spent a lot of time together on set with the writers and producers.
06:03
And I, I, you know, I think they got to know me as a person more and they started to layer
06:09
a little bit more of the goofy, funny Luke in.
06:12
And, and they kind of enjoyed bringing him in this direction of, you know, a jock who
06:19
had been putting up this front.
06:21
And when he became able to be himself around his new friends and the people who had been
06:29
the outcasts, he suddenly like was able to be his, his goofy self.
06:35
And, you know, that was a really fun way to take the character.
06:39
Yeah, I think it was a similar journey for me, you know, as, as the writers got to know
06:46
me, my character got, yeah, she just grew.
06:53
I think they realized that I was a really sensitive soul who might, you know, be able to sort of
07:02
show up in any room, but would probably be really nervous on the inside and who shows
07:08
up for friends, no matter what.
07:10
And, and, you know, there were certainly these bold and courageous, crazy, amazing things
07:16
that she did that I don't know that I would have been able to.
07:19
Um, we always joke that like every character on one trio had the most insane adult job.
07:24
Like they just all, I became a fashion designer, one played in the NBA, like it was insane.
07:29
But I think there were certain things about, you know, like integrity and feistiness and
07:38
passion and whatever that, um, that I know they certainly started to layer in there for
07:44
me that, yeah, just made me feel like I could bring a little more of myself to her.
07:48
Yeah.
07:48
I think that happens, that tends to happen over time when you're working on a series that
07:52
lasts a long time, the writers get to know you and they start putting more of you.
07:56
And when you've been on a show, like on Grey's seven years now, I've seen a lot of myself
08:01
on screen.
08:02
I was going to ask that.
08:04
I love that.
08:05
That's so fun.
08:05
We have discussed that there are, um, thriller moments.
08:11
Things take a turn.
08:13
Everyone knows we had to work with stunt coordinators.
08:15
I won't say how or by whom, but there is a moment in the film that did make me feel stressed
08:26
for you because no one, there was no stunt performer who could take the hit.
08:30
It's literally a closeup on your face and you get hit with, shall I say, very hot water.
08:41
How hot was it?
08:47
Or are you just that good at acting?
08:53
Well, no, I'm, I, I, I'm a terrible actor.
08:56
So I requested boiling water so that I could have a real reaction.
09:00
Great.
09:00
Love that.
09:01
Your, your ability to heal your face is amazing.
09:04
Yeah, no, it took, I did, I refused interviews for a while while it was, while it was healing
09:08
up.
09:09
No, uh, no, it was, uh, it was, I think it was slightly warm because it had to be like
09:14
giving off a little bit of steam, but, um, no, it did not scald me, but, uh, you know,
09:21
I enjoy, I enjoy, I enjoy taking a shot to the face from time.
09:24
Well, it looks so brutal in the movie.
09:29
That was one of those things.
09:30
I was like, I was in the room for that.
09:31
Why am I so startled?
09:34
Yeah, no, I, I did take some other shots to the face too, which, uh, I, I love that.
09:39
I love, I love doing stunts and fights.
09:41
I love it.
09:42
I do too.
09:43
It's so fun.
