00:00India's coal industry is steadily shifting toward modern, safe and sustainable underground mining
00:10to balance energy needs with environmental goals.
00:15Leading this transformation is Southeastern Coalfields Limited, SECL, a Key Coal India
00:22subsidiary, pioneering eco-friendly coal production through advanced underground technologies.
00:30Unlike open-caste mining, with scarce land, underground methods disturb only subsurface layers.
00:36A crucial step as India works toward its net-zero carbon goal by 2070, announced at COP26.
01:00We are using the latest technology, latest safety gadgets.
01:06We are using the latest technology, latest technology and safety gadgets.
01:10Under that, it will be used to be environment-friendly.
01:14We will be using the minimum damage to the environment.
01:19The SECL's Charcha mine in the Baykhunpur area stands as a model of innovation and safety.
01:29Among India's deepest coal mines, it operates at depths of 150 to 450 meters.
01:36Equipped with low- and short-height continuous miners, Charcha blends traditional methods with
01:42modern technology, including upgrades introduced in March 2024 in the Shivpur block.
01:50Spanning over 7,000 hectares, it holds reserves of 11.4 to 6 million tons as of April 2025 and
01:59is set to operate for another nine years under its current closure plan.
02:04Level above 7,000 hectare miners which is about 400 and easy impacts, including TCP and
02:10increased
02:32In that time, there was a lot of pollution in humans, and we couldn't get any output.
02:43As the new technology, CM technology has come in underground mines,
02:46the advantage is that we are consuming less manpower,
02:51and with high production, with safety.
02:54SECL's vision aligns with Coal India's target of sourcing 25% of the country's coal from underground mining by 2030.
03:07SECL has already identified 56 projects for large-scale underground production,
03:14with an estimated 350 billion tonnes of coal reserves within 1,200 metres,
03:21and as surface deposits decline, underground mining is emerging as a sustainable alternative.
03:28Offering greater safety, minimal surface impact and a lower carbon footprint,
03:34it is said to play a key role in India's path to net-zero emissions and energy self-reliance.
