Extra pressure on airports and roads at start of school holidays

Motorists are being advised to take extra care on the roads over the next two weeks with millions of travellers heading off for the school holidays.

00:00It's been a busy day on the road so far since school holidays have kicked off.

00:06Here in South Australia there's a crackdown on drug and drink driving across the state over the weekend.

00:12Today SA Police launched an operation that will see drug and alcohol screenings take place on regional and metropolitan roads until Sunday.

00:20SA Police say drink and drug driving has been a contributing factor in nearly a quarter of all road fatalities in SA over the last four years.

00:29So far in 2025 they say more than 2,000 drivers have been detected drink driving and nearly 2,300 drug driving in SA.

00:38In New South Wales police there say that 20% of their fatal and serious road crashes take place in school holidays.

00:45Nationally police are warning of an increase in what they call vulnerable road users.

00:50So this is young cyclists in young pedestrians as well as people on scooters and skateboards.

00:56So take care around intersections and pedestrian crossings.

01:00Also we're expecting an exodus into regional Australia.

01:04So if you're hitting the roads at these school holidays make sure that you allow extra time for heavier traffic.

01:10Take a break every two hours to fight fatigue.

01:13And be wary that drivers around you may not be familiar with the regional roads you're on.
